We Had a Great Day For Our Back to Church Sunday Barbecue
We had a great start to our fall season. It was a special day. We had one hundred and seventy two people in worship, twenty two in Sunday School and over a hundred stayed for our Back to Church Barbecue. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make the day one that we will long remember.

A Walk Through the Bible
Join us on the second and fourth Wednesday nights for an informative walk through the Bible. This is a great opportunity for beginners as well as those who want a refresher course to learn the basics on what is in each book of the Bible. Class runs from 7:15 PM to 8:15 PM.

Pastor Cal’s Corner
Dear Friends, We got off to a good start this fall with our Back to Church Celebration on September 11th. The Praise Team and Choir led us as we sang God’s praises and gave thanks for a good summer. We had a full house and the energy was high. Part of that enthusiasm was from the children who were helping us kick off a new year of Sunday School. This is our second year with our new format. The Sunday School classes are run the same time as worship. We have classes for children in grades pre-school through the eighth grade. The kids leave for Sunday School right after the Children’s Moment. Once again we have a great team of teachers leading the way. So if you haven’t brought your kids or grandkids, it is not too late. We’d love to have them join us. I have to tell you that I’m looking forward to October and our Homecoming Celebration. Our team has been working hard to insure that it meets everyone’s expectation. We hope to greet a number of old friends as they return for the weekend. If you see someone, be sure to invite him or her to join you for the weekend. I am a student of history. With this 70th Anniversary Celebration it will give us a chance to pause and look back at the men and women who were responsible for the legacy of faithfulness we enjoy today. I am looking forward to seeing both, Rev. John Houlker on Friday night and Rev. Wes Smith on Sunday morning. Both of them had a tremendous impact on our congregation when they were here in the 1990’s. Both are excited about returning. John is currently serving as the Pastor of the Warwick Central Baptist Church. Wes is the Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hamilton, New York. I am also excited about visiting with Rev. Ron Short through the medium of Skype. We will be dialing up Becky and Ron on Saturday night. I got to meet him when our mission team passed through San Diego last year and it was easy to see why so many were inspired by him as he served our church, first as our Associate Pastor, and then our Senior Pastor, in the 2000’s. I think it is important to know our history and the men and women who have served here. They loved this congregation. A perfect example of this is Howard Crouch. He was a long time Trustee and one of the men involved in the building of our current facility. When he died he left a bequest to the church that has just been released to us. The gift of over $100,000 is to be used for capital building expenses going forward. Not everyone has been able to make a monetary gift like his, but over the last few years I have heard countless names of individuals who have impacted our church through their service. During the Homecoming weekend, some of these names will be lifted up in brief historical skits. I think you will enjoy them. Finally, Lori and I can’t thank you enough for the prayers, love and support you have given us since we moved into our new home on Summer Street in July. You have blessed us in so many ways from the help moving to the help with our landscaping. We love our new home and being part of the Westerly community. We would like to invite any who are free to drop in for our Open House on Saturday, October 22nd from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. The address is 68 Summer Street. God Bless! See you in church. Cal

Operation Christmas Child We are collecting items throughout the year and packing shoe boxes In support of Operation Christmas Child. Each month, through November, we are collecting small items for the shoe boxes: pencils, crayons, small toys, hygiene items, hats, etc. We will also be collecting a $7.00 donation per box which is critical to helping transport and deliver each shoe box gift to a child in need. Please see Brian Gerbutavich if you have any questions about Operation Christmas Child.

The financial totals for August continue to show positive results! Both the monthly and the total giving for the year were exceed the planned amounts and monthly expenses were lower than planned for the month. These numbers indicate that our deficit is almost $30,000 less than planned. We thank you for your continued generous support of the CBC ministries! For your convenience, we offer easy online giving, including automatic weekly or monthly giving using your checking account. You can check out the options on our website (www.cbcwesterly.org). Just click on the blue Donations button (top right) and then click the Make a Donation button. The EasyTithe online giving site offers the same level of security as bank websites, so your information is safe. To save you time, you can create schedules to automatically send your gifts either monthly, biweekly, or weekly. Each time your donation is sent, you’ll get an email acknowledgement of your tax-deductible gift, and you can print a report of your giving history. Treasurer’s Report
Hello everyone. As the summer is winding down, I especially look forward to my favorite time of year, the fall. With the changing of the leaves we truly see the majesty of God’s work. Take some time to look around. The Board of Trustees at Central Baptist Church in their July meeting concluded that it would be helpful to divide the responsibilities of the Board of Trustees into four general areas. These areas include financial and budget matters, all matters related to the parsonage, all matters regarding the church building and grounds (properties) and stewardship. As promised in the last newsletter, here is a breakdown of the responsibilities of our trustees: The Board will be organized as follows: Gary Trebisacci – Chair, Frederick C. Eckel, Jr. - Vice Chair, Ellen Rodehorst – Treasurer, Ron Rodehorst, Scott Rahl and Alan Caval – Properties. Michelle and Scott Hallamore, parsonage. Ellen Rodehorst and Frederick C. Eckel, Jr. – financial and budgets. All board members, stewardship. I for one feel that we have the right people, in the right places, who can handle the issues that arise. As members of the church, feel free to offer suggestions or comments, or help on any of the committees. We look forward to hearing your comments and concerns.

Thank you to all who supported our tag sale; the funds will go towards future mission work. We are still working to find a date and location for serving the homeless in NYC. The WARM shelter meal will be provided by the Board of Deacons for the month of October and the Board of Missions will provide the meal for November. Information about the World Mission Offering is included in this issue. It will be collected during the last four Sundays of the month. “SEE YOU ON THE MISSION FIELD” MISSIONARIES AT WORK – Mercy Gonzalez-Barnes American Baptist International Ministries – Iberoamerica and the Caribbean Email: [email protected]; Birthday: Mercy September 23; Husband, Rick, May 20. Children: Aida, Richard and Joshua Language Used in Ministry: Spanish & English Impact Areas: Theological Education As you may be aware, Mercy has been the contact and host of the CBC Mission Team on their trips to Mexicali, Mexico. We were also honored and delighted to have her visit us during the past few years. If you had the opportunity to meet Mercy, you know what an outgoing, uplifting person she is. After 13 years of teaching, mentoring and walking alongside men and women in Mexicali, Mercy is now responding to these same concerns in the wider Latin American context as regional missionary. She will be part of a team that will be walking alongside the ministry of Cuban Baptists. “I am responding to this new call with excitement,” says Mercy. “I am being stretched as I discover the diverse needs of our Latin American partners. This is also an exciting time of change in Cuba, and in that spirit I ask for your continued support of this ministry.” Mercy asks that you pray: -For my family, as we transition to new ministries, a new home and a new school for Josh, and as we seek God’s guidance in finding a new job for Rick and the timing of a move. -For God’s guidance as I embark on the new thing that God is doing. -For the project of online theological education that is in the works, specifically the need for scholarships and funding to support the project. -For me and the other missionaries working on the International Ministries Cuba team, that we may develop a good relationship with the conventions and that we be open to see and participate in what God is already doing on the island. “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43: 18-19

Pastors Remembered By John Macomber
2 Timothy 4:2 – Preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. (RSV)
Central Baptist Church is observing it's 70th anniversary this year with a homecoming weekend on October 21, 22, 23. I thought it was appropriate to include in the October newsletter some thoughts about each pastor I remember over the years. My remembrances start with First Baptist Church pastor in 1930 and continue up to the pastor who preceded our present Pastor Reverend Dr. Cal Lord.
Reverend Byron Hatfield was a very imposing figure with a booming voice and a shock of white hair not unlike Moses and God as usually depicted in art work. He frightened me with his sermons on hell and damnation. He had me convinced I was doomed to the fiery pit.
Rev. Campbell Eatough was the pastor who baptized me. He had a preteen son who was a hellion. I wonder if all pastor’s children acted like this.
Reverend Glenn Asquith had a voice with a tonal quality the opposite of Reverend Hatfield’s booming voice. He gave of himself sacrificially when he resigned in order to bring about the merger of first Baptist and Calvary Baptist Churches.
Reverend Dr. Alfred Murray took a real interest in me when he loaned me many books from his personal library after finding out I was interested in following a journalistic career. He didn't hesitate to answer his nation’s call during the Korean War.
Reverend Dr. John Elliott was a very likable, bordering on lovable, pastor with a gentle demeanor. We exchanged many letters while I was in the army. He later married Mary and me for which I am eternally grateful.
Reverend Frederick Gardener was someone I had difficulty warming up to, probably because he objected to a stewardship campaign plan by co-chairs Bob Frazier and myself. He didn't like our plan and told us to do it his way or not at all. During his later tenure I served as a deacon and he baptized Mary into the church.
Reverend Dr. Lloyd Frederick was a man of great intellect and appearance with the ability to preach both meaningful Bible-based sermons and skillfully lead Bible study groups. I served as moderator during his tenure.
Reverend Wesley Smith was a man of great warmth and compassion. He was the first pastor I can truly call a close friend. Mary and I enjoyed being in his company and he helped us over some difficult hurdles.
Rev. Peter Wood was someone who tried to bring about radical change to the church without regard for the church’s history. He failed to get the laity on board with his plan which later cost him his position as pastor. I thought he was everything a pastor should not be.
Reverend Ronnie Short was not with us long enough to draw any conclusion. I don't believe he had the experience to bring about true reconciliation that was needed at Central Baptist at that time and I think he knew it.
These are my remembrances. Undoubtedly others will have their own.

Rev. Kathryn Palin to serve as Associate Executive
Minister For Elder Care Ministries
The Board of Ministries of the American Baptist Churches of Rhode Island is pleased to announce that Rev. Kathryn Palin has agreed to join the Regional staff as the Assoc. Exec. Minister for Elder
Care Ministries. Rev. Palin brings a wealth of diverse ministerial experience to this task. In addition to serving churches in Rhode Island, Washington, D.C., Kentucky, Connecticut, and Iowa, she has worked for the Baptist Joint Committee on Religious Liberty, the Alban Institute and educational institutions.
The Board of Ministries of the American Baptist Churches of
Rhode Island joins with the Baptist Home Board in thanking the Search Committee for its good work in bringing the unanimous recommendation of Rev. Palin for this vital ministry. The process of discernment included a nation-wide search which garnered a number of qualified candidates. In recommending Rev. Palin for this ministry, Rev. Dr. Daniel Cottrell, chair of the Search Committee, states: “Rev. Palin brings to the position substantial organizational, administrative and ministry experience. Even more she brings a deep and vibrant faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. She offers to us a commitment to work with the Baptist Home Board and the American Baptist Churches of Rhode Island to develop and implement ministries by and for elders in our region.” Rev. Palin will be moving from Des Moines, Iowa, to Rhode Island to begin her ministry among us in the near future. Although specific moving and starting dates are not available at this time, we look forward to Rev. Palin’s imminent return to Rhode Island and ministry among us.
World Mission Offering (WMO) Celebrate New Life in Christ “on Earth as in Heaven” (Matthew 6:10, NABRE)
A great and surprising spiritual awakening is happening in Baptist churches in Cuba right now! Since 1990, the number of churches in Cuba has grown by 450%. The number of baptisms has risen by over 500%. The number of prayer groups and total church memberships has climbed in equally high numbers. After decades of harsh restrictions, “the church of God has risen from the ashes,” says a retired Cuban church leader who witnessed the remarkable change firsthand. “In God’s time, the hearts of so many people have been opened up to the goodness of the gospel.”
The good news is that our church’s support of the WMO is helping to fuel the growth of the Eastern Cuba Baptist Convention through financial and global worker support and through International Ministries (IM)-sponsored pastor conferences. The better news is that there is a lot that we can learn from Cuba’s spiritual revival. For example:
Youth ministry is thriving through camping and sports ministries, concerts and youth rallies. Spirit-filled outreach is yielding abundant fruit through evangelistic campaigns, prayer and fasting. Discipleship is spreading through numerous house churches and cell groups of prayer. A new generation of leaders is growing through faithful teaching at seminaries and training centers.
And perhaps the best news of all is that Cuba’s spiritual awakening is but one of many thriving ministries run by IM partners and more than 1,800 long- and short-term global workers in more than 70 countries around the world. And that’s just what IM is doing—through your support of the WMO—by praying, equipping, serving, proclaiming, teaching, inviting, healing and encouraging in the name of Jesus.
Your gifts to the WMO help to raise up, place and send new global servants and volunteers to reach and touch lives for Jesus around the world. They also help to fill gaps for those workers who haven’t yet reached their support goals, enabling crucial ministries to continue; help support 240 global partners who are actively sharing God’s message of hope, love and healing with a lost and hurting world; and help recruit and train new global workers, open up new global mission fields, respond to global disasters with relief and development funds through One Great Hour of Sharing and much more. We had a nice visit from Rev. Dr. Lloyd Kenyon and his wife, Betty. Lloyd grew
up in our congregation and was ordained here in 1951. He went on to serve several churches in PA and NJ.
The Needle Workers always enjoy good fellowship and a productive time when
they meet.
We have so much talent in our congregation. Lori Lord and Lynn
Dowding recently played a piano duet in worship.

The Tabernacle Baptist Church recognized Rev. Dr. Joyce Duerr’s retirement with family and friends at Camp Canonicus this month
and Pastor Cal was honored to speak. Joyce was licensed to preach out of our
congregation where she spent over twenty-five years as an active laywoman.

Come One, Come All to Home Coming Weekend
Dear Friends,
Seventy years. It was seventy years ago that the members of the First and Calvary Baptist Churches decided to put away their differences. They voted to come together to form a congregation that would provide a greater Christian witness in our community. Over the years we have been blessed by the faith and testimonies of so many wonderful men and women.
On the weekend of October 21-23 we want to celebrate the past, present and future ministry of our church family here at Central. We’d like to invite you and your family to come back and be a part of it. You were part of what God was doing here in years past. Many of us have some great memories of the people and activities that were intrinsic to our ministry going right back to the beginning. We still have many members who remember Dr. Murray’s passionate sermons. Others will tell you of Rev. Frederick Gardner’s dramatic flair in the pulpit. Some of the best memories flow from the years when Rev. Wes Smith was here. He had the ability to draw out the best in us and to engage the community as he invited them to join us on our journey. Finally, we were truly blessed to have Rev. John Houlker here for so many years. He touched a whole generation of our young people and helped them come to know Jesus.
There were a lot of good times. I believe that these set the foundation for our congregation to build on. We are experiencing a renaissance in our ministry here today. It feels good to be a part of this ministry again. So we have planned this weekend to give thanks to God for all His blessings. Please consider joining us for part or all of the activities we have planned. Some of the Weekend’s Highlights include: Friday, October 21 we will have a variety show with special guests, Rev. John and Patty Houlker. We are soliciting folks from the congregation to share a song, a poem, a humorous skit or something fun that they can share. The party begins at 7:00 p.m. with dessert and beverages being served. We even hear talk that Psalty might be here to sing a song with any of his old friends who are in attendance.
On Saturday, October 22 at 5:30 PM we will have our All Church Banquet featuring a delicious pork loin dinner. There will be a historical skit, a Skype session with former Pastor Ron Short and special musical entertainment by the Bennett family. The Bennett family features Ray and Diane Bennett and their nine children who share the gospel through their music. Tickets for the dinner ($10 each) are available in the church office. Make your reservations early as seating is limited (only 120 seats!)
On Sunday morning, October 23 at 10:30 a.m. we will gather for our 70th Anniversary and Homecoming Worship service. The highlight of the morning will be our very special guest preacher, the Rev. Wesley Smith. We also have some special music planned including a “one time only” reunion choir. We’d like to have anyone who sang in one of our choirs, (Cherub, Junior, Praise, Senior or Chancel) come join us for an anthem. Just come early and meet in the chapel at 10:00 a.m. for a quick rehearsal. There will be a light lunch following worship. You will get a chance to greet Pastor Wes Smith and his wife, Joyce. You will also get a chance to browse through our historical display and may even encounter a bit of living history as the past comes to life. Dot Marra and her crew will be providing a light luncheon following the service and we will enjoy some photos and maybe even a short skit that will bring us back in time to an earlier day!
So please come and celebrate with us during this very special weekend. As the new guy, I’d love to meet you and hear some of your stories about our church.
