Quarterly Newsletter January 2018 Lilydale Meet On Saturday, October 21st, approximately 25 club members gathered for the final Gopher Chapter meet of 2017 which took place at the Pool & Yacht Club in Lilydale, MN. Weather was rainy and a bit on the chilly side this year, but that didn’t stop those who attended from enjoying some early morning coffee and donuts and making some sales! The meet, hosted by Tom Murray, was considered a success due to the turnout. Thankfully, the rain subsided before noon making it easier to enjoy lunch which consisted of turkey and ham sub sandwiches, chips, and soft drinks. When asked for his reaction to this year’s event, Tom said When the meet started around 9:00 AM, I had my doubts anyone would come. But, as time went on, members did start to file in. Thank you to all for making the effort to attend. I know a lot of members do enjoy this meet!Tom plans to host his third annual meet at the Pool & Yacht Club on October 20, 2018. He hopes there will be better weather next time! Please enjoy pictures from the day courtesy of Rick Magnuson and Dave Peer. Haynes’ Stillwater Motor Meet

Forty-two club members gathered on Saturday, January 6th for Tate and Dean Haynes’ 9th annual Stillwater Motor Meet. While the sun made an appearance, it was a tad chilly that day with temperatures hovering around -5 degrees. Lunch included Swedish meatballs and, of course, hobo stew- the entree many have come to expect over the years! Dave Wiborg made an appearance which was an obvious highlight. It was a great turnout for the first meet of 2018! Please enjoy photos of the day courtesy of Rick Magnuson.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Say hello to Daryl Hall of Linwood, MN your spotlight member for January!

Daryl (age 54) works in commercial construction as an Estimator/Project Manager for a structural steel fabricator. His company provided some of the steel in the roof structure for the new Vikings stadium. Daryl has held his position for about eight years.

Daryl originally joined the AOMCI in 1980 and rejoined in 2015. He’s been involved with the Gopher Chapter for the past two years. Daryl’s interest in motors was sparked as a kid when he received his grandfather’s Evinrude RBM. The boat in the photo is a Gleason, made in Jenkins, MN. Daryl and his wife Carrie bought it a few years ago. He’s removed six coats of paint off of it, but it’s sat untouched for two years now. Daryl would love to finish it but “time seems to be tight with work, grandkids, and whatever else life throws at you!” He’s looking to acquire another motor or two to keep him busy into retirement some day.

When asked if there was anything he would like to add, Daryl shared “my dad was a collector of large and rare antique tractors that I helped him restore.” But, antique and classic outboard motors feel like a better fit for Daryl with the space he has. He said “I’m really enjoying getting back in the club, learning about these motors, and meeting new people who share the same interests.”
