Good Afternoon Parents and Caregivers,

You may have seen a few posts popping up on our Social Media pages over the past week asking you for your assistance and feedforward into our great school. This included input into menu choices for the Healthy School and Online Canteen for 2019, Seussical Jr Student and Staff Surveys, and the commencement of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) planning for Years 4-6 in 2019.

P R I N C I P A L ’ S M E S S A G ECHOICE THEORY ROLL-OUT

Glendore PS has moved to a behavioural support and development model based on Dr William Glasser’s Choice Theory.

Glasser Quality Schools actively build quality relationships, encourage quality work from all, provide a need-satisfying environment and aim to encourage all learners and staff to achieve to their potential (find out about Glasser Quality Schooling). Some of Choice Theory’s key concepts include: • Removal of fear and coercion • Doing quality work is deeply satisfying • Quality relationships enable quality

learning • Self-evaluation and co-verification lead to

quality learning outcomes.

Choice Theory explains why and how we make choices that determine our lives. Understanding behaviour at this level gives us the tools to be happy and to build the life we want to live. Choice Theory states:

• The only person’s behaviour I can control is my own (trying to control others ruins the relationships I need)

• Behaviour is always purposeful and chosen (and is our best attempt at the time to satisfy our Basic Needs)

• I choose everything I do (and practically all I think). My emotions and physiology are a direct result of those choices

• We are internally driven to satisfy our Basic Needs (Survival, Love & Belonging, Power, Freedom, Fun & Enjoyment)

• I can change what I’m doing and thinking if it isn’t getting me what I need

• Everyone is responsible for their behaviour • Many long-lasting wellbeing challenges are

based in relationship concerns.

As all of our staff are trained in Choice Theory, Reality Therapy and Lead Management, we will be rolling our specific Student training in Term 1, across K-6. Helping learners understand how and why they behave and how to take control of their lives will be a part of every class, every day.

PSSA ATHLETICS

Congratulations to our Senior Girls 4x 100m Relay Team, who recently competed at the PSSA State Athletics Carnival. They qualified through to the Semi-Finals. Whilst they did not make it through to the Finals, to be in the state’s top 16 schools for this event shows true dedication, collaboration and sportswomanship. A hearty congratulations must go to Riel, who has competed so well that he is now a member of the NSW PSSA Athletics team. Riel will compete in the School Sport Australia Track and Field exchange in Melbourne, having qualified in the 10 years individual 100m and 10 years Boys 4 x 100m relay team.

REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES

Our ANZAC Memorial Garden and Lone Pine Memorial Walk are being put to good use. Well done to all students who contributed work towards 11/11/18.

GRANDFRIENDS DAY

Last Friday was Grandparents and Grandfriends Day. Students loved having visitors come to their classrooms and enjoyed recess with them. Seussical Jr. Leads, Infants and Primary Drama Groups, the Glendore Stardust aerobics team and 2C all performed. These were all enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to all our families who came to celebrate this day with us and to the P&C for providing the delicious cupcakes!

PLP CELEBRATIONS

Parents and caregivers of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are invited to celebrate the achievements and successes at the school’s PLP Celebration. This will be held on Wednesday, 28th November at 2:45pm at our Yarning Circle. Students will be recognised for their achievements by their classroom teacher. Parents/Caregivers are invited to join their child’s teacher in handing out the award. Separate invitations will be sent home in Week 5. We look forward to celebrating the wonderful achievements of our Indigenous students

CHILDREN’S UNIVERSITY

On Monday night, 60 Glendore Public School students graduated at the University of Newcastle’s Children’s University ceremony. It was fantastic to see so many of our supportive families present. Even better was the significant levels of Service Learning Achievement by nearly 70 students in total, 10 of whom were unable to attend. Congratulations to nearly 30 more, who did not quite have enough hours completed to graduate. Glendore PS was once again the educational institution with the largest number of students attending.

The brilliant cheer from you all said it all in the university’s Great Hall! We had an awesome night! Following our Great Hall Graduation, families, students and staff all went together to have dinner and a disco to celebrate their fantastic achievements. We aim to have 150 graduates next year. Can you help us? We certainly have more than enough onsite activities at both Lunch and Recess to enable every student to complete minimum registerable hours to graduate. Check out these awesome photos – We want you there J

CALLAGHAN EDUCATION PATHWAYS (CEP)

Congratulations to our award winners who received a prestigious award at the Callaghan Education Pathways (CEP) Aboriginal Recognition Assembly, which was held on Wednesday 7th November 2018 at Callaghan College Waratah Technology Campus. We are extremely proud of their achievements. Congratulations to Lachlan, Dhakota, Mia, Teijan, Ellie, Alex, Tyla and Teleah. We are all extremely proud of you and how well you represented our school in front of the entire Callaghan Education Pathway and our Director of Education.

SEUSS SURVEY

Thank you to the 125 respondents for our first School Musical’s survey. There has been some very valuable feedback captured about how we could make our next endeavour, whenever that may be, even better. Please visit https://tinyurl.com/glendoreseussical to add your voice.

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) INFORMATON

Did you know that our new STEM Lab will include 35 new touch-screen HP Windows Tablet Devices as well as an array of coding, robotics and STEM equipment? Mobile collaborative tables with whiteboard brainstorming spaces are being constructed now. This lab will complement the 30-device Desktop lab of the library, the 150 iPads in the school, 80 existing laptops and 100 additional desktops.

Alongside two enhanced staff workspaces in the school with another 20 computers, we now have a curriculum guarantee of devices in place BEFORE we move to a Year 4-6 BYOD model. This will alleviate any pressure on families and will create a system of support that develops critical, creative and collaborative thinking all the way from Kindergarten to Year Six, and beyond.

Did you know that for every student Mac or Windows user, you will be able to download up to $4000 worth of software for free from the NSW DoE over the K-12 years? Similarly for iOS, Android and Chrome devices, there are also Microsoft (MS) and Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) apps that can be used absolutely free-of-charge. Should you wish to provide a low-cost, and robust device for Year 4-6 students, you will not need to purchase software.

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) SURVEY

Please visit https://tinyurl.com/glendorebyod to complete a short, 8-question survey on how online learning (K-6) and BYOD (Years 4-6) could roll out at Glendore Public School for 2019. Your feedforward will be taken seriously into account when planning our support structures, resources, student and staff training.

K-2 CHRISTMAS SINGING CONCERT

Family and friends are invited to attend our afternoon of Christmas singing with all K-2 students on Wednesday, 5th December. We will be performing some special Christmas songs for you to enjoy in the School Hall from 2:00-2:45pm. Our students have been working really hard and would love for you to come along and see them sing.

Students may come out of uniform in red and green colours. A Christmas themed t-shirt, Santa hat or reindeer antlers would help to make our concert look and feel very festive. Please remember that students will still need their school hat and closed in shoes (no sandals or thongs). Thank you to Mrs McDowell and Mrs Probert for organising.

SCHOOL SERVICE MORNING TEA

We would like to thank all of the wonderful volunteers that have given up their time to support our students, staff and school in 2018. No school can function well without the support of its community. At Glendore Public School, we are so lucky to have a diverse community from 7 different housing estates, strong partnerships with cultural and educational providers. We would like to invite all volunteers to a Thank You Morning Tea on Monday, 10th December in our School Hall. We hope to see you there! We’ll even cover the Canteen during that timeJ

COLOUR RUN

The Colour Run is quickly approaching on Friday, November 16th at 1:45pm. Students are to wear clothing items that you wouldn't mind getting colourful. A white T-shirt is recommended as this best shows colours. $5 or $10 per family should be paid to the P&C box at the office. Keep collecting sponsorship for what will be a fantastic day.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE

Wallsend RSL are holding a Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 11th November. Our school leaders will be attending the event and laying a tribute on behalf of the school. The service will begin at 11am at Federal Park, Wallsend. All students are invited to attend the service with their families. Any students wishing to attend the service representing Glendore PS should meet Miss Cook at 10:30am at the memorial in Federal Park.

CREATIVE ARTS COMMUNITY EVENT

We have invited residents of local aged care facilities and Pre Schools to come and watch our talented Aboriginal, Junior and Senior Dance groups, Choir, Aerobics, Musical Theatre and Drama Groups perform in the School Hall on Monday, 19th November. Specific costume notes for our performers will be sent home. We hear residents are already looking forward to the entertainment. This is another example of Glendore Public School students implementing our school values of Care and Kindness, Participation, Respect, and Service.

CREATIVE ARTS EVENING

Our Creative Arts Evening is planned for Thursday, 22nd November from 7:00-8:15pm. All families are invited to watch our Aboriginal, Junior and Senior Dance groups, Choir, Aerobics, Musical Theatre and Drama Groups perform. We are asking for gold coin donations as you enter the Hall. Specific costume notes for our performers will be sent home. If your child is in a performance group and is unable to attend, please contact the organising teacher. Performers will need to remain until the end of the evening performances and will need to be collected from classrooms by a parent/caregiver. We are looking forward to seeing our school community support this fantastic event.

P.A.I .R. READING BEING IMPLEMENTED IN 2019!

In 2019, Glendore will be introducing an exciting new Home Reading program, PAIR (Parent Assisted Immersive Reading) for all K-2 students. This will complement our existing Home Reading program. The PAIR program books provide parents with scaffolds, in the form of questions, tips and prompts embedded onto each page. Applying these strategies during home Read-Aloud sessions will assist students with the development of their reading skills. Mr John Walters introduced PAIR Reading to our 2019 Kinder Parents at our second Kinder Orientation session. We will be holding another two information sessions (day and evening) on Wednesday 6th February 2019 for Year 1 and 2 parents. All sessions will look at practical read-aloud activities that can be used to develop a child’s early literacy. John will also unpack international research that focuses on the acquisition of early literacy skills, in particular, the powerful role that read-aloud sessions can play in the development of a child’s reading-readiness. Visit www.pairbooks.com/ and www.pairbooks.com/research.html

DIGITAL MEDIA FESTIVAL

The Callaghan Education Pathway Digital Media Festival is on again. Like bigger festivals, e.g. TropFest and MudFest, each year has a theme. In 2018, How Time Flies is being featured. To fit in with this we are featuring a 5-minute whirlwind tour of Seussical the Musical Jr. containing excerpts from practises through to performances. Students who do not have permission to publish will not be featured. This year’s venue has been changed to Callaghan College Waratah Campus. This event will be held on November the 29th and will have a live performance of the Seussical Jr leads amongst other performances from the 18 schools across our local Callaghan network. Tickets are $5 each or Families (4) are $10. These are available from our school’s office. Please come along, support our school and have a great night!

The girls did a fantastic job, receiving a score of 70.1 and a gold medal around their neck. The girls have been working hard all year to learn new skills and are excited for the 2019 competition. Aerobics is held each Friday at lunch and students are invited to come along and learn something new. Mrs Houston and Miss Cooper look forward to seeing some new faces.

KINDERGARTEN 2019 ORIENTATION UNDERWAY

Our brand new Kindergarten students for 2019 have started their transition to school program and have had a wonderful time getting to know new friends and experiencing school life. We have two more transition days coming up on Friday the 23/11 & 7/12. Parents are also treated to some information sessions on transition days and new school uniforms are able to be ordered for Kinder 2019 enrolments.

Whilst we continue to grow towards excellence, we understanding that for a variety of reasons some students may be changing schools. This could because of a relocation, enrolment in a selective school or other. NEW LINKS WITH THE CANOPY FOR 2019

The Canopy is a wonderful organisation, with its local community hub just along Maryland Drive partway between two great public schools, Glendore and Maryland. Its name implies an organisation that exists above to provide shelter for those underneath. Last week, I had the pleasure to meet with its coordinator, Michele Kowalski. Following this meeting, I am pleased to advise that Glendore Public School is planning to roll out a series of wonderful programs in partnership with The Canopy over 2019. These will include assisting with:

1. Glendore’s Breakfast Club, each Wednesday and Friday, 2. Community work with refugee families, 3. Connecting families experiencing hardship between the school/hub, 4. Provision of parenting programs run by Family Workers, 5. Providing of training and information to Glendore PS staff, 6. Possible establishment of an intercultural playgroup, and 7. Connections between other existing GPS Partnerships,

including: NDIS, CAMHS, CAFHT, FACS, HNE Health, Northern Settlement Services, Defence Services, DoE Saturday Languages School, Women’s Refuge Support, Refugee Support.

Please see the information pamphlet at rear of this newsletter.

CANOPY CAN DRIVE

Glendore Public School is participating in the Non-Perishable Food Drive for Maryland’s Canopy until 23rd November. Please place all items into the collection box in our Administration Office’s foyer. Food collected helps supply emergency food to local families that are in desperate need. During 2017/18, Maryland Canopy provided food that benefited over 6600 people. Half of those were young people and many of them attended our local schools. Non-perishable food is only used in dire emergencies. Sadly, in the Fletcher and Maryland communities, there had been an increasing numbers this year.

Food distribution is done entirely by volunteers. Canopy does not receive any funding and therefore relies on efforts of the public to help meet an ever-growing demand. Canopy also provides programs that can assist families in our great school. If you would like to find out more about these services please contact Maryland Canopy on 4955 8111.

GLENDORE PS ~ ENROLLING YEARS K-6 2019 NOW

Do you know of anyone with a child who lives in the Glendore Public School enrolment area who could commence Kindergarten next year? We have included our Zone Map again in the next column. Please note the satellite image. Please note that while the school locator tool at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder/index is inaccurate. It will incorrectly attribute new parts of Sanctuary Estate and Hidden Waters Estate to Minmi PS.

All of Sanctuary, Hidden Waters, Nikkinbah Ridge; all of Kingfisher Drive, Waterside Drive and Discovery are in Glendore’s Zone. The new Sanctuary North and Sanctuary Views (developing now) are in Glendore’s Enrolment Zone. Always visit Glendore Public School’s website, its administration centre or that of Minmi PS to see live “Near Maps”, which are current as of mid-June, 2018, unlike Google Maps.

Please look out for an A3 Pamphlet Prospectus about our great school. It will be delivered to your letterbox this weekend. Can you spread the word about the great things happening at Glendore Public School.

The Outlook and its future expansion is zoned for Minmi. Half of Maryland is in Glendore’s enrolment zone. A “Near View” aerial map is included below to clarify the areas.

Permission notes and Information regarding this very unique opportunity will be coming home on Monday, 12th November. All notes and $5 bus fare will be due back at school by Monday 19th November. The actual educational experience has been secured by Mr Khay for all Year 3-6 students absolutely free. We have also applied for an opportunity for ten of our female students to access a Girls in Science and Engineering Experience. Should we be successful, this will occur on both 22-23rd November. Names will be selected randomly.

HSPA SENIOR CHOIR VISITING

SEUSSVISION DVD ORDERS CLOSED ON FRIDAY

Whilst SEUSSVISION orders did technically close on Friday morning, we will accept late orders until 9:00am Monday. That is our final offer J

DONATIONS OF BUCKETS

You may have noticed that we are starting a bucket drumming group at Glendore under the leadership of Mr Nick Bukey, one of our EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect) Teachers. We have purchased 30 sets of drum sticks, but now need 30 clean large plastic buckets to start our percussion group. Can you help us this week?

P&C FLEXISCHOOLS & FACS COMMUNITY GRANTS

Well done to Mrs Sarah Thoms, who recently featured in the Newcastle Weekly Magazine for her voluntary work. Sarah has been extremely busy, investigating and setting up the roll-out of the P&C’s new Flexi-Schools Online Ordering System. This will allow parents and caregivers to place lunch orders, purchase uniforms, make donations and contribute to P&C Fundraisers all online. This will be a massive labour and time saver for all of our community work and for audit purposes.

Thank you also to Mrs Justeen Gould, who with Mr Khay spent many hours on a NSW Government FACS Community Partnership Grant. We hope to bring you very positive news, very soon about what this means for our school We are waiting on the outcome of a second application, but look likely to be able to fund a second multi-purpose court, one each for K-2 and for Year 3-6 students during breaks, and a doubling of our capacity for Sport and Physical Education programs.

STAFFING

Congratulations to Miss Kathryn Dunbar, who was successfully offered a permanent position in our school from her interview at the end of 2017. Activation of this eligibility list brings to a close all merit position eligibility lists that could be continued into 2018. With the school’s growth has also come transfers and retirements. Mrs Christine Downing’s transfer created a vacancy, which Miss Dunbar has successfully won through merit. Further growth in numbers of our great school has meant that the NSW Department of Education has allowed me to form a new panel to merit-select a highly-credentialed graduate and to provide them with explicit mentoring support.

I am currently advertising for a 5dpw School Administration Manager for all of 2019. This officer will relieve in Mrs Probert’s position. Kathy is an outstanding administrator and will now be stepping up into the role of Glendore Public School’s Business Manager for 3dpw next year. I am awaiting on advice regarding a third position to be filled in the school. At this point I would like to acknowledge the nearly 20 years of service by Mrs Ann Provost. Ann, who I taught at university way back in 2000 will complete her service in December before taking long service leave pending retirement. I wish her all the best for her final 5 weeks.

PAMPHLET DROP – CAN YOU HELP SPREAD THE WORD?

As mentioned on the previous page, we will soon be doing a second and much expanded letterbox drop through our seven housing estates. Each double-sided A3 poster/flyer contains an array of information about what is occurring in our school. The flyer represents a summary Annual Report. We did manage to deliver 2000 pamphlets a week ago, but this only scratched the surface of our total number of residences. We are planning to issue another 5000. Should you receive one and not need it, please pass it onto a neighbour or friend with primary school-aged children who lives in our drawing zone. Should you not have received one and would like one, please contact Mrs Probert or Mrs Dedman in the Office or go to the Downloads Area of our new website. Downloads should be available from the middle of Week Five (15/11)J

DONATIONS OF FENCING PANELS

Did you see our FB request for the donation of fencing and/or roofing panels of at least 1500mm in length? These can be in any colour as we will be spraying them with a uniform Colorbond colour. After forming up a framework under each of our 7 demountable buildings, we will be able to permanently enclose them to reduce any collection of leaf litter (fire and vermin hazard reduction), to keep out any creepy crawlies that we don’t want around people and also to keep sports equipment from being lost. Donations of spare panels would really help us out, is environmentally friendly and will assist wth sensible repurposing of an energy-intensive resource. Please leave your details at the main office for Mr Khay, or send an email to [email protected]

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP ZONE

As we head towards an increasingly busy time of the year for all families and our school, I ask for your support in taking that extra time to drive slowly during any approaches to and departures from our school. If you can park away and walk the extra few hundred metres, you will likely find that these drop-off’s and pick-up’s are actually quicker. Our staff do a fantastic job in supporting students in walkers, cyclists, crossing, bus stop and pick-up lines. We want to keep everyone as safe as they can be in the final run home to Christmas.

ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT EDUCATION REPORT

Look out for a very detailed briefing from Mrs Budd about the wide array of activities successfully undertaking in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education at Glendore Pubic School over 2018. These have been for all students, whether Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or otherwise. Glendore Public School is a collaborative partner with its AECG and is proud to be trialling a range of new initiatives, including self-funding a full time Aboriginal Education Officer position.

SPINS CONTINUING IN 2019

I am pleased to bring you more great news about our wonderful speech pathology program. Miss Lewis has been coordinating this program on behalf of the school in 2018. After months of negotiations, I am pleased to announce that SPinS will continue through Semester One next year, with a specific focus on Years 1-2, 2019. We are also applying for a third semester’s program of support, which we would like to focus on Kindergarten 2019 in Terms 3-4 next year. The entire cost of SPinS is borne by the school’s budget. We have spent this semester triaging, assessing and intervening with close to 100 students across K-2. We are putting world-class practice and support programs at your children’s fingertips, eyes, ears and mouths for free J

STUDENT SUCCESSES CELEBRATED We love sharing positive stories and information regarding our students’ successes outside of school. If you have some information, don’t forget to let us know J

JACK CARROLL – NEWFM’S NEWSTAR COMPETITION We wished Jack Carroll all the best with his participation in the New FM Radio Competition Congratulations as he was nominated for a NEWSTAR Award. Jack's nomination was for his personal resilience, and kindness and compassion towards others. As we advised on the GPS Facebook Official page, Jack will be donating any prizes to disadvantaged students. We do note that both the Primary Performing Arts and Primary Music Categories had no nominees. Anyone keen?
