Pastor’s Paragraphs

Our first few months in Romeo has been filled with many exciting events, Vacation Bible School, Simpson

Park camp meetings, Rally Day, Bible studies and many other opportunities to gather together as a church

and get to know each other better.

One of the new things we’ve started working on along with our newly elected Stewardship Committee is

Consecration Sunday which will be on Dec. 3rd

. Wayne Barrett from the Methodist Foundation in Grand

Rapids will be our guest speaker that day and that’s when we’ll make a pledge to the church for the coming

year. We give to the church in many ways but we depend on your financial pledge to make sure that the

many ministries of this church can continue.

Our theme for this year is “A Giving Heart.” We used that expression to kick off Rally Day and we thought

it was appropriate for our Stewardship campaign as well. Our heart is where God chooses to dwell because

that’s where we learn to love and care for one another. The important decisions in our lives start not in our

minds, which is where we make most of our decisions, but in our hearts. Love leads us to give. Love is

the church’s most effective means of connecting with the world, so as you consider what you have to offer

the church this year, let your heart be your guide.

Let’s let love move us forward as a church as we love the people and the community that we have the

privilege of serving.

And the next month we’ll offer up our thanks for your generosity and love.

Pastor Trevor

Many of us have accepted the “Parable of Talents Challenge” (based

on Matthew 25: 14-30) and are already thinking of creative ways to

grow the $5 seed money to benefit the Missions of the Church. To

assist those interested in multiplying their “five talents”, RUMC will be

setting up a booth in front of the church on Labor Day, Monday,

September 4th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Peach Festival parades will

bring many people right to our doorstep and the hope is that members

of our community will be thankful for the opportunity to purchase our

items. Those interested in donating items for sale or helping man the

tables should contact Linda Schenburn by Sunday, August 27th. The

challenge ends on October 15th, when we’ll return both principal and

profit to advance God’s work in a way that is pleasing to Him. May we

be worthy of hearing, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

(Matthew 25:21 and 23).

SAVE YOUR SPARE CHANGE –

Noisy Offering October 15th

The Noisy Offering is used

to support the Compassion Youth in

Uganda sponsored by our RUMC

congregation. These young people

would not be able to go to school if

they did not receive financial support.

SHOP WITH SCRIP

We are beginning a new fundraising program called "Great Lakes

Scrip." Great Lakes Scrip sells gift certificates (and gift cards)

from over 300 retailers to non-profit agencies, such as churches

and schools, at a discount. For instance, if you order a $25

Speedway gift card, your card is worth $25, but Romeo UMC

receives a 4% rebate ($1.00), a $25 Walgreen gift card gives us a

rebate of 5% ($1.25), a $10 Arby's gift card gives us a rebate of

$8% ($.80). If we all order Scrip for places you already shop at,

think of how much money our church can earn in a year! Our

first order will be taken on Sunday, October 1st, and you will

receive your gift cards the following Sunday. Just give your

order form to Carol Herm on October 1st, along with payment

(checks made out to Romeo UMC). We will take orders every

other Sunday. Order forms are available in the lobby. You can

see all retailers that offer Scrip by going

to www.shopwithscrip.com. All proceeds will be used to help us

pay our share of the ministries of the United Methodist

Church. See the display in the lobby, or see Carol Herm if you

have any questions.

DRESSES AND SHORTS FOR HAITI

In July Sharon and Tom Snively, missionaries that spoke on Mission Sunday, delivered 408 items donated by RUMC to the Northwest Christian Haiti Mission. Part of the donation was 50 dresses and 30 pairs of shorts made by the ladies of UMW. There are pictures posted in Fellowship Hall of some of the children wearing the items we donated. We plan to continue this mission project. If you would like to be a part of this mission project please join us. If you are not a sewer don’t fret, there are other tasks that you can help with. Refreshments are always served, we are Methodists after all. Donations of fabric, bias tape, eyelet, buttons, etc. are always welcome. Please drop your donations in the box outside the church office. These items will be delivered in February when Tom and Sharon return to Haiti. If you have any questions please contact the church office.

“MUSIC HATH CHARMS TO SOOTHE THE SAVAGE BREAST, TO SOFTEN ROCKS, OR BEND THE KNOTTED OAK”-William

Congreve 1697

When Congreve wrote this, he was obviously speaking of our organist/ choir director/music director/handbell director,

Cynthia Forsgren. Cynthia began taking organ lessons at the age of 7 but her more formal organ lessons began at the

age of 12. At the age of 13 Cynthia decided her life’s goal was to play the organ in a church environment. She was 14

when she got her first paying job as an organist in a church. Now, some 30 years later she is still passionate about her

work.

While most high school age students might pick a school to attend based on their friends, educational rating or even the

school’s athletic success, Cynthia went to Marine City High School. Why? She went because there was a church in the

city which had an 1861 E&GG Hook Tracker Action Pipe Organ. It was the only organ of this type west of the Allegheny

Mountains at the time. (Google this organ sometime it’s a fascinating story.) She attended Oberlin College in Ohio for

one year and completed her musical education at the University of Michigan. During her college years she was invited

to go to England and attend the Royal School of Church Music to study choral music which she described as an amazing,

uplifting experience.

Cynthia was pleased to tell me she absolutely loves being here. She said she feels so appreciated because people are

always telling her how wonderful she sounds when she plays. As a congregation, we are very lucky to have her and

appreciate all that she does for us. It is always wonderful to walk in to the sanctuary and hear her play. My breast is

soothed, my heart softened and my mind being bent as I prepare to worship God.

Make a Bowl at Starkweather Clay Studio!

**So far, 135 bowls have been made for this event!

Operation Christmas Child Hello Church Family!!! It is hard to believe that it is time to be thinking about Samaritan’s Purse Christmas boxes. We have been doing this ministry for several years and I always appreciate how you step up and help. We will be filling shoeboxes (remember just normal size NOT boot boxes) with small toys, school supplies, hygiene items. I will have the brochures with all the information you need available at church. Some of the items accepted in the past have changed so be sure and read the directions. Our dedication day for the boxes will be Sunday, November 12th. More info will be made available during Sunday morning announcements. Thanks again for supporting children who never receive a Christmas gift. More important though is the spreading of the gospel these boxes bring and the GOOD News of Jesus Christ!!!! For more information call Linda Klusendorf 586-749-6170 (web site: samaritanspurse.org/occ)

Still time to make your bowl!! All are welcome!

Contact them at 586-752-6013

or [email protected] to arrange a

time to create a bowl. The cost to make each

bowl is $3. The bowls will be sold beginning on

October 13th for a minimum $5

donation. Proceeds benefit His Table

Community Meal!

Don’t forget to attend the 3rd Annual Art

& Wine Walk on October 13th at 6 to 9

p.m. and bid on your favorite bowl(s).

Dear Church Family,

Thank you all for your prayers as my mom has been slowly recovering from illness, with several setbacks. A special thank you to Pastor Trevor and Carol Herm for their visits and prayers, these have been a great comfort to us both.

Romeo United Methodist Trustees

What do you think of when you hear the words “Trustee or The Trustees”? Does it bring up the thought of “Oh ya those

people are the custodians for the church, they fix stuff that is damaged or broken”. To a point, that view is somewhat

accurate in that the trustees ultimately are responsible to see that the Church’s facilities are safe, secure and being

utilized in the interests of the United Methodist Church..

But let’s be clear here, the Trustees are not the Church’s janitors or the local “fix it people”. Frankly, that belongs to you,

all of us, the congregation. Is that not a part of what we pledged (to serve) when joining RUMC. The Trustee’s

responsibilities are to identify building needs, assure they are adequately met by either purchasing the required service

or organizing the congregation to fix the problem. The Trustees as well see that all Church, State and Federal rules are

followed for pledged financial endowment investments and usage as well as safety, building cleanliness and integrity,

day to day maintenance whether it be lawn care, snow removal, garbage pick-up or building heating and cooling needs.

Why do I write this? Obviously for communication purposes. With so many Church activities progressing throughout the

year, the day to day trustee activities often get over looked.

Let me share just a few:

1) The “Life Skill Center” (Old nursey/pie room) has new shelving thanks to Becky and Lafayette as well as a

new fan and lights.

2) Repainting is underway in the “Resource Room” thanks to Julie.

3) Lightbulbs are replaced as soon as a need is identified thanks to Bob.

4) The parsonage was power washed prior to the new pastor moving in thanks to Grant.

5) Broken chairs have been repaired thanks to Lou.

6) Misc. safety issues identified by outside mandated inspections are completed or scheduled for repair

(Kitchen lighting & fire alarm citations, basement sprinkler system citations and missing fire extinguishers replaced)

along with a myriad of signage and the like. Mainly thanks to Julie.

Beyond the above mundane issues the Trustees have revised the existing “Building Usage” form to identify the costs

associated with usage of the building and are working with the Wedding committee and Funeral committee to maintain

all the form requirements and clarify all costs in using the building whether a member or non-member. This is being

done to eliminate any further misunderstandings of “who has to pay what and how much”. There is flexibility in that the

Trustee Chair can waive building usage costs for nonprofit organizations or in special circumstances at his or her

discretion.

The trustees have further identified some significant Church, Methodist House and Parsonage building issues, some we

the Congregation could do if we are committed to it, some are beyond our skill levels and will require outsourcing with

significant cost. Some are as simple as scrape and paint, clean the gutters and other general maintenance. Others

require lift equipment and professionals to reach the problem areas. Further communications on these issues will be

coming in the future.

Thanks for your attention, Larry Back Trustee chair

Everyone wore their VBS Hero capes and masks and said the Hero Pledge with Linda Klusendorf, as members of the

Super hero Team! Discover your strength in God! “Do good, seek peace, and go after it! “ Inspired from this year’s

VBS theme Hero Central. All the participating children will all be receiving a parade ribbon and a RUMC leadership

Christian Education Rally Day Update

Dear Church family,

Congratulations on helping make our intergenerational Rally Day, a great success. Without the support of many

volunteers, this church wide event would not have been possible. This Fall event encouraged all ages to come and

check out the wide variety of programs RUMC has to offer. We continue to hear rave reviews about our Sunday,

September 10, 2017 program and hope that all volunteers and organizers know how much they were appreciated.

The following individuals were asked to present on behalf of Christian Education:

Barry Benham brought his Corvette, and shared his story.

Dr. Naomi Stasak brought her Cadillac and shared her story. In both cases the purpose was for all of us to

get to know each other and build relationships as we grow in our faith journeys.

Nathan Bartholomew and his son Luke Bartholomew set up and ran the games.

Kenn Koss was available to share information on our adult Bible study options for fall.

Mary Ann Deforest and Helen Koss brought their braided rugs recently made in one our Life Skill Classes.

Nancy Domke, framed and shared our church award that she accepted on behalf our entire church and had

information regarding our church History Committee.

Mary Jo Hosler made an arrangement for a bouncy house and duck pond to be provided free of charge.

James Routheaux, Manager of Wendy’s in Romeo, through Mary Jo’s efforts, delivered the games and

brought volunteers, Chris Smiles and Mary Meisner to run both events during our program and donated

prizes for each.
