Hello Welcome to this guide to opportunities in Peterborough for adults with learning difficulties.

We hope that this booklet will help you to choose the right courses in order to help you achieve your goals.

Perhaps you would like to get a job, learn new skills to help you live more independently or maybe you would like to meet new people and try things that you have never done before.

Hello!

Whatever your dreams are, flicking through this guide may open up new opportunities for you. We have tried to make

it easy to use by dividing it up into sections and using symbols. The Green Book is also available on the internet at: www.thegreenbook.btck.co.uk

Inside you will find lots of information about what is available in Peterborough and who to contact if you want to find out more or to enrol. The web site can give you new information about events, sports for you to try and any new college courses that may be available.

As well as the courses in this book, there may be

other ‘mainstream’ courses you would be able to go

to. These are the courses that all members of the

public can attend. Ask your college tutor or key

worker if you are interested in a ‘mainstream’

course. They can help you talk with the college to

see if one of these courses would be right for you.

We hope you find our Green Book useful. John, Liz and Steve, the Green Book Team

All students work in small groups and progress at a pace suitable to their individual learning goals. Learners may enrol upon more than one programme depending upon the qualification. Please ask at interview. The programmes are designed to develop practical skills within realistic environments such as our on site charity shop, carpentry workshop, purpose built house, catering kitchens, or within the local environment including farms, employers and charities. In addition a number of off- site activities are included to promote learning, independence and employability skills. Our learning environments are adapted according to our learners needs. Adapted classrooms have sound proofing, specialist lighting, black out blinds, adjustable desks and seating. In order to respond to the learners needs appropriately with the design of our rooms, we use external specialists such as representatives from The Local National Autistic Society and other providers. We also offer chill out/relaxation spaces, specialist equipment and adaptive software, such as sensory aids, and specialist hygiene facilities. Learners are assessed by our team of Additional Learning Support specialists which include; Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Profound and Moderate Learning Disabilities, Personal Care, Mental Health Difficulties, Dyslexia, Literacy, Numeracy and Language, Physical, Medical and Mobility Impairments, Visual and Hearing Impairments. Learners are allocated support in their studies according to their needs by staff trained in these areas. Students receive an individual induction programme and the College welcomes contact with parents/carers and liaises closely with all parties to ensure our students receive the best possible service in a friendly, comfortable and professional way. We also offer bespoke programmes within your organisation, please contact us on 0845 872 8722 to discuss your needs.

There are 2 courses they are: NOCN Level E2 and NOCN Level E3 Both are held on a Monday 10.40 to 5.00 These qualifications are designed to develop some of the basic skills needed to gain employment. The qualifications can build on previous achievement of an award but also allow for a more in depth look at some of the skill areas and ensure, through the range of units available, that a breadth of skill areas is covered. These qualifications have been designed to accommodate a wide range of learner need within the target group, from those at school/college who are coming to an age where they are beginning the first tentative steps towards employment to those in an older age group who may have begun the journey to employment and faltered along the way. These qualifications offer the opportunity to build a personalised programme for an individual that addresses their specific needs and circumstances. It gives a focus for the learners and providers in planning and recognising this progress towards independence. These qualifications can be delivered in a multi context environment by professional tutors and/or work based professionals. Generally the most appropriate setting for many of the vocational and work skills units is in a real life setting which extracts the maximum value from the experience and reinforces the context in which the learning is usefully applied.

Peterborough Regional College’s charity shop,

based in Alexandra Foyer, sells quality clothes and

gifts, as well as crafts made by students on the

Inclusive Learning courses. The shop offers

students the opportunity to gain valuable

college.

Students are responsible for restocking the shelves, designing attractive

displays, cleaning the shop and serving customers using the till, as well as

sorting donations, washing and repairing

items where necessary. They also work on a

mini enterprise project, making items to sell

in the shop and it gives them a chance to

improve their communication, literacy and

numeracy skills.

Who are we? We are a social club for adults with learning

disabilities. Unfortunately, we can only accept

members who live in Whittlesey or the

surrounding villages (Eastrea, Coates,

Pondersbridge etc). We are a self supporting

group funded through grants, donations and

fund raising. What’s on offer? We do different activities each week, ranging from card making, arts & crafts to

cooking pizza. Sometimes we go on trips to the local public

house or sports field and we’ve even been to the local fire &

Police stations. Members are asked what they would like to

do and we try to accommodate the requests as much as

possible. We have quiet areas where less active members can

relax, reading or colouring, if they so wish. Our volunteers are

lively and fun and they are all CRB checked. There is always a

qualified first aider on site. How much? An annual membership fee of £2.50 is payable the first Thursday of every April. A

weekly subscription of £1.50 is charged. Transportation via taxi to and the club may

be available (subject to numbers), for a small fee (currently £2 a week, Jan 2012). Contact For more information please email, [email protected] or just come along to

the centre on a Thursday night and meet us all.
