I LEARN TERM 3 FOCUS: EQUIPMENT 9th February 2018

A message from the Headteacher:

It’s been a very busy week to end our third term at Lawn Manor! This week alone, it was great to welcome Craig Boardman, a Team GB para athlete. Meet Our Team

This week: Ms Nina Tebby, Director of Modern Foreign Languages Becoming a teacher was never part of my life plan! I left Swansea University with a degree in Spanish and Portuguese, so I boarded the first plane to Spain and stayed there for 10 years. I spent the years working in translation, real estate, golf resort management and just about anything that would fund my carefree lifestyle in the sun! Unfortunately, unemployment hit hard in Spain so I followed the sun around the globe, landing in Dubai and invested 3 years in a career as an Emirates air hostess.

MOMO Theatre visited this week to educate Year 7 on road safety and travel - the benefits of walking and cycling to school, the effects of car pollution, public transport, car sharing and road safety. The show was delivered with a mixture of humour and education and was very informative. At the end of the show, the students were asked to recall all the information in the show by helping a volunteer remember all the things that they were shown.

Year 7 Road Safety Roadshow

As part of the NSPCC Number Day event last Friday, pupils were able to take part in a wide range of activities throughout the day to develop their numeracy skills. Activities included ‘who wants to be a Mathionaire’, board ‘Blockbuster’, logical puzzles and a ‘keep calm and crack the code’ challenge. KS3 Pupils took part in Countdown style competitions during lesson time all last week and the winning teams entered the grand finale of ‘Lawn Manor Does Countdown’, which took place on Thursday lunchtime. Fitzroy were victorious in this competition! On Friday, KS4 battled alongside staff in another fierce Countdown competition, where Fitzroy also came out as winners!

Number Day

By Samir Ahmed and Kelvin Potter

We are working with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust learning about forest schools and conservation. Once we have completed the course, we will gain awards.

Week 1 has been all about shelter building. We were given 4 ropes and 1 tarpaulin and had to build a weather proof shelter that did not let water in, which meant building it at an angle and tight, so the rain would run off. It also had to be lower on the wind side to protect us.

Year 10 Employment Pathway

Eventually real life felt the need to intervene, so when I found out I was going to become a mum I moved back to the UK, via a 12 month teaching stint in Spain, and decided the only way to keep my love for Spanish alive was to try and inspire crazy teenagers to fall in love with it too. So here I am six years into my teaching career, still trying to make the sun shine here in the UK! I worked at Tewkesbury School for 5 years before joining Lawn Manor this September. Other than travel, I enjoy reading, baking cupcakes and Spanish films.

Congratulations to the Year 9 GCSE Dance class that performed at the Wyvern Theatre on Tuesday 30th January in the Swindon Schools Festival. They had an amazing time and performed brilliantly in such a large theatre. An experience to remember!

Year 9 GCSE Dance at the Wyvern Theatre

We have two vacancies for Parent Governors on the Local Governing Board of Lawn Manor Academy and invite parents (includes anyone with parental responsibility), guardians or foster-parents, who would like to be appointed, to put their names forward.

Parent Governors are elected by and from the parents, guardians and foster parents of registered pupils at the school, for a term. Parent Governors share equally with other members of the governing board, the responsibility for carrying out the governing board’s legal responsibilities. The position of school governors has always been an important one that is vital to the effective running of the school and is a means of giving worthwhile service to the community.

If you wish to stand for election as a Parent Governor, it is necessary for you to be proposed by a parent, guardian or foster carer of a pupil registered at the school and to be seconded by another parent, guardian or foster carer of a pupil registered at the school. The proposer and seconder should indicate their support for you by signing the attached nomination form. All nominations should be returned to the Clerk via the school by Friday 16 February 2018. You may also like to include some detail about yourself and why you would like to become a governor (no more than five hundred words) to support your nomination. This will be used if there is a need for an election by secret ballot. This will only take place if there are more nominations than there are vacancies.

There are some circumstances that disqualify an individual from serving as a school governor and these are listed on the back of this letter. Please ensure that you read through these. If you require any further information about the role of a governor please contact Jenny Lowe at: [email protected].
