Former Governor David Paterson Visits the Home Former Governor David Paterson visited the Hebrew Home to speak with staff and youth from the Generation to Generation and Summer Youth Employment programs, about his experiences prior to and during his role as Governor of New York State. One of the many messages he conveyed to our younger generation is that achieving the impossible is attainable.

Grandparent’s Day 2011 On Sunday, September 11, 2011 the Home held its 49th Annual Grandparent’s Day. Over 1,800 family and friends turned out to honor and celebrate the Home’s grandparents, including Congressman Eliot Engel, Senator Jeffrey Klein and Councilman Oliver Koppell.

The outdoor celebration included a barbecue luncheon, games, rides, and live music by The TomCats Jazz Aces Swing Band featuring String of Pearls and David Belt. The afternoon also included a silent auction in which the Home’s Residents donated their artwork. Proceeds from the Grandparent’s Day silent auction will benefit the resident art program.

As a special treat Cub Scout Pack 115 from Bronxville and Brownie Troop 1905 from Rye Brook participated in the celebration. The boys and girls lead the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem to honor the memory of those lost on the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

Greenberg-Starr Memory Center OffersWide-Ranging Fitness ProgramIt is the Greenberg-Starr Memory Center’s mission to bring healthy lifestyle possibilities to all in residence. Our latest phase of program development is the introduction of fitness programming to the Resident Activity Calendar. With the invaluable support and skill of the Nursing, Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Activities Departments, Memory Center residents enjoy a daily complement of physical activity including fitness walks, strength training, low impact exercise, bicycling, Yoga, and massage therapy.

Exercise is a vital component of physical and brain health whether young or older, whether in the presence or absence of Alzheimer’s disease. Fitness walking tours are led by a Certified Nurses Aide, who joins residents in viewing art work and testing their wit at wall-mounted activity boards to build upon brain ability and motor skills. During strength training sessions, residents fortify and re-connect with their physical ability through performing a range of low impact exercises.

Of late, Massage Therapy has joined the fitness roster, with a licensed Massage Therapist bringing relaxation and healing to residents challenged by age and Alzheimer’s. Through the powers of gentle touch, residents visibly recognize and respond to healing hands and find renewed harmony within themselves.

Hurricane IreneThe Hebrew Home staff kept a watchful eye on the path of Hurricane Irene in late August. Weather disturbances and the accompanying challenges they create are the subject of extensive planning and training that staff undergo on a regular basis. The Home offered a safe haven to its colleagues at the Menorah Nursing Home in Coney Island where 20 residents and staff spent three days at the Home.

Sculpture Hit by Tornado Reinstalled Menashe Kadishman’s Sacrifice of Isaac was reinstalled this summer after it was severely damaged in the devastating tornado in July 2010. The central component of the three-part sculpture, a two-ton steel ram’s head was damaged when a tree toppled on it, nearly bending it in half.

The work is part of a collection of more than three-dozen outdoor sculptures on the Home’s 19-acre campus. The collection is open to the public daily, free of charge, from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. For further information, please call the curator’s office 718 581-1330.

How Does Your Garden Grow? It looks as if Food Services will be enhancing their culinary adventures using the herbs cultivated in this year’s Staff Garden thanks to JoAnn Stern, Carlos Luna and participating staff.
