Student NewsFun in Mrs. Major's

Spanish classesIt’s been fun and games in Mrs. Major’s Spanish classes lately! Students have been using the game “Headbandz” to practice vocabulary and a game using a bolt and cup to make preposition practice more interesting.

drive supports Join

We topped off a successful JOIN drive with a toilet paper tower building house competition. Rosary won the competition with the tallest tower, but JOIN (Joint Organization for Inner-City Needs) was the real winner, as students collected many items to help those whom JOIN serves. Twenty-three 1st period classes earned a dress down day on Friday, December 2nd. Mr. Wagner’s 1st period class will receive breakfast for winning the overall competition among 1st period classes. Mr. Dino-vo’s class was runner-up, followed by Mrs. Gruber’s class.

Nurse's NotesThe holiday season is quickly approaching and along with it comes cold and flu season. Here are some tips/reminders for students and parents for how to stay well and enjoy the holidays:

Eat a balanced, low sugar diet – In the rush to get everything done, we tend to resort to quick, but not so healthy, food choices. In addition the high sugar cookies and candies can lower the immune system.

Get your rest – Students need 8- 10 hours of sleep in order to be fully rested and keep the immune system in good working order. If you are not feeling well, stay home and rest, keeping your germs to yourself.

Wash those hands! – Most germs are introduced to us through hand to mouth contact. Shopping, parties, and even church gatherings are all opportunities for exposure to ill-ness. Warm soap and water is best, but hand sanitizer is a good alternative and can be made readily available.

Don’t Stress – Preparation for the holidays often brings on additional stress as we add more work and obligations to an already busy schedule. An occasional self -check can go a long way to lower stress. Try asking these questions when you are feeling over-whelmed: Is this really necessary? Could someone else do this for me? Can the holidays still be enjoyed even if I don’t do x, y, or z ?

Don’t forget to laugh and enjoy the season – laughter really is the best medicine!Wishing you all healthy and enjoyable holiday season!

Feeder Focusbecause it's always felt like home. Andrew feels one of the best things about Hartley is how the staff and other students here all want the best for each other and for everyone to succeed.

Andrew’s advice to incoming students is to take the time in high school seriously but don't forget to enjoy the experience. Hartley is a great place to pre-pare for the next step in life.

Jack Baughman - St. Pius

Jack came to Hartley from St. Pius X School. Jack is a school captain and a member of The National Honor Society. He coaches Special Olympics bas-ketball in the winter. He also plays football, baseball, and CYO basketball.

Jack’s grandpa was a member of the first Hart-ley graduating class in 1961, and his mom and uncle graduated in the 80's. He came to Hartley because he felt it was a place that would prepare him for college while being a place he would love to be every day. Jack says the best thing about Bishop Hartley is the atmosphere. He enjoys coming to school every day and being a part of the culture we have here.

Jack advises those in middle school to take ad-vantage of opportunities in high school and to enjoy your time in high school; it goes by quickly.

Andrew Heinmiller -Holy Spirit

Andrew is a graduate of Holy Spirit. He plays baseball and football, is a Wehrle House Captain and a member of The National Honor Society. Andrew follows a long line of Heinmillers who have attended Hartley. He says he’s been around Hartley his whole life and chose to come here

We are beginning a new monthly feature in The Herald to let our feeder parishes know what some of their graduates are up to. This month we begin with all seniors.

Jennifer Hernandez - All Saints Academy

Jennifer attended All Saints Academy. She is currently a mentor group captain for Rosary house and was selected as the 2016 Homecoming Queen!Jennifer chose to come to Bish-op Hartley because she really enjoyed her eighth grade visit here; the students were really nice and she knew she would fit in very well here. What she likes most about Hartley is how the students treat each other like family. Her advice to younger students is to nev-er change who you are for anyone. High school is a new chapter in your life and it's a real eye opener. Stay true to yourself, and you will have a great four years.

Elias Maloof -St. Matthew

Elias is a St. Matthew alumnus. He participates in many clubs here at Hartley, but some of his favorites are Varsity Soccer, National Honor So-ciety, The House System, and Campus Ministry.

Elias chose Hartley because he felt it was the best option for him. Hartley balanced faith, ac-ademics, and extracurricular activities in a way that meshed with who he is and what he wanted to do. Elias thinks the best thing about Hartley is the fact that it allows him to be who he is, but also feel like a part of the community at large. Hartley allows him to have an experience of his own in addition to a traditional high school

experience. He suggests the middle school stu-dents come in with an open mind, and don't be afraid to try new things. Some of his favorite things he has partici-pated in happened because he went to a meeting or applied to something because it sounded kind of cool, but it ended up being awesome!

Betsy Huggins - St. Catharine

Betsy came to Hartley from St. Catharine. She is actively involved in the Drama Department, Na-tional Honor Society, and serves as a math tutor.

Betsy chose to attend Hartley because she really enjoyed the sense of community at Hartley and loved the academic program. To Betsy, the best thing about Hartley is that each class grows so close together during their four years here. She says mid-dle school students should not be afraid to talk to somone new on your first days of high school!

Katie Price - St. Mary German

villageKatie came to Hartley from St. Mary, German Village. Art and Drama are her main activities at Hartley. She also volunteers at St.Mary parish and works with the St.Catharine youth group.

The original reason Katie looked at Bishop Hartley was her brother Andy went here, so it would just make sense for her to go here. However, in the end she was drawn to joyful atmosphere of Hartley's community. Ka-tie says she adores the people at Bishop Hartley. In times of sadness or trouble, she knows she had students and teachers she could count on. She also believes that if one of her peers needed her, she would be there for them in any way possible. She says that's just how Hartley's community is, and she loves it. Her advice to younger students is do your homework! It's repeated a lot, but it has good reason to be.
