Welcome to the First Edition of

Your Community, Culture and

Corporate Magazine offering fabulous news, information,

events and packed with wonderful places to visit and sites

to see in the Mansfield and Ashfield District.

We at The High Life believe our local area has so much

to offer, with a fantastic community spirit, a strong

heritage & cultural society and a pro-active corporate

sector, with many businesses continuing to grow and

develop in spite of the ongoing recession.

Let us just reflect back to 2011 (see photo top right) and

the brilliant work of the Mansfield Rotary Group and it's

supporters who worked so hard to clear up the Berry Hill

Park and then went on to host many events later in the

year. See page 8 & 9 for more details.

The Mansfield Palace Theatre, (see photo right) hosts

such a variety of performances for all ages. I recently had

the pleasure of an evening of song and dance

entertainment by Expressions Performing Arts Studio. I

was amazed at the standard of the show and the amount

of local talent. See page 34 for Show dates at the

Theatre.

Our Corporate Section offer lots of positive local business

news. Please read the article on page 17 regarding Hall

Fast, recent winners of the Exporter of the Year Award.

Congratulations.

Photo right shows the NNN Business Support Team and

see the details of what services they can offer to your

business at whatever stage. Plus why not step into the

NNN Den Business Review Panel. Find out more on page

18.

People choose to live and work in Mansfield and Ashfield

The Mansfield Business Improvement District

The Mansfield BID is a partnership between local authority and the local business community that develops and takes forward projects and services that benefit the trading environment. A BID aims to sit businesses and local authorities around the table as equal partners working towards common goals and driving issues forward that are important to various stakeholders through consultation, engagement and participation. The work achieved by BID’s is above and beyond any statutory service that the local council will be providing

BID’s are paid for by the non-domestic payers within a pre-defined BID area through a supplement in their rate bill. These levy payers vote in favour of a BID being introduced based on a proposal and business plan. A successful vote must meet two tests. More than 50% of votes cast must be in favour of the BID and the positive vote must represent more than 50% of the rateable value of the votes cast. The mandate is cast for a 5 year term. Towns and cities are under increasing pressure so it is important that BID’s support the long term sustainability of their towns and cities. Mansfield’s BID was declared on the 12th March 2010 and was legally entitled to commence trading from the start of April 2010.

The BID team consists of a Management board of 14 with John Sankey, MBE as the chairman. The operational staff team consists of a BID manager, coordinator, business crime manager and two ambassadors.

The Mansfield’s BID overarching aim is Clean, Safe, Promote with the following strands being looked at in detail and projects and initiatives filtering in to these: It’s Clean, Really Clean, Safe and Secure, Access and Car

Parking Appealing Mansfield, Invest in Mansfield, Marketing

Mansfield

Since commencing trading the BID team has achieved some massive successes: Employment of two ambassadors, which has aided in

delivering projects to reduce crime and fear of crime for both visitors to Mansfield and for the businesses

Running of a successful shop radio scheme and collating of intelligence by businesses for businesses

Development and launch of the Mansfield Town Centre website

Launch of the fantastic I Love Mansfield scheme, with the recent edition of an I Love Mansfield privilege card whereby visitors have access to over a 100 offers in the town

A variety of successful events and marketing competition including summer children’s activities, best dressed Christmas window competition, and contributions towards the Christmas lights and switch on event

On-going promotional activities for the businesses and the town such as radio and newspaper adverts and promotions

Car parking scheme Launch of a dedicated cleansing team for the town centre

businesses Funding of summer planters and hanging baskets

Under the business plan headings our 2012/13 plans include: More exciting and bigger events such as Easter activities, jubilee and Olympic themed events and many more summer events. Dedicated chewing gum removal Development of car parking initiatives Improvement and promotion of empty retail units Launch of a pop up shop Public realm enhancements

And many more projects are on our horizon to encourage visitors to Mansfield and celebrate what Mansfield has got to offer. The Mansfield BID is due to commence its third trading year and all the team are excited about driving these projects forward.

Family Fun Day Almost 2,000 visitors attended the June Mansfield

Rotary Club’s Berry Hill Park family fun day - despite the heavy downpours of the day. This was the first major event at the park since the 2-day clean up by the Rotary Club supported by the Chad.

Despite the weather Rotarian Stewart Rickersey was still really happy with the event and the great response to the Project saying that it had helped to raise the profile of a park which was once described as the town’s ‘jewel in the crown’. "The park itself looked terrific. The majority of people came prepared for the weather and enjoyed themselves". He continued ": “We’ve had some amazing volunteers. People have really got passion and really care about the park. “That’s coming across really loud and clear.”

The event itself featured a host of activities and attractions, including an appearance by a look-alike of England football coach, Fabio Capello. There was also live music on the restored bandstand, including an appearance by the Pleasley Colliery Welfare Band - believed to have been the first performance by a brass band at the park for more than 30 years.

Legends in the Park Berry Hill Park Another great event took place at the restored grounds with an evening of entertainment in September 2011 with Live Tribute Bands to The Kinks, Queen, Dusty Springfield, Motown. ‘How’z That’ for Local Student Success!

Patrick Delahunty aged 10yrs from Wellow House School has made the Nottinghamshire Under 11 Cricket squad for the 10 week winter training session that

started in February this year.

There are 18 in the winter squad and in April 2012 they select a playing squad of around 15 for 10 games and a tour of Wales this summer.

Patrick reached the Winter training squad after being recommended by his club Thoresby, and then going through an initial 36 boy trial and then a final 23 boy trial.

For him the hard yards really start

now!

Patrick only really became interested in cricket after Mr Pedley a teacher at Wellow ran a Wednesday club in 2011 which ignited Patrick’s enthusiasm for cricket and that coupled with the coaching from Mr O’Kane (Head of English & Junior boys games) plus the frequent occasions when Mr Forbes (French & Latin Teacher and i/c of Senior Cricket) has given a wise words of advice have helped Patrick create a passion for the game and now he really has the bug.

Mr Forbes was a very good cricketer and his father was former Headmaster of Wellow. He has been an inspiration to many pupils not only on the cricket field but has been the reason for the very many scholarships and academic successes of Wellow pupils over the last 37yrs !

Patrick is the son of Tony Delahunty who manages the commercial radio station Mansfield 103.2

Local Student to visit China

Jonathon Hewlett-Davies aged 17 currently studying at The Joseph Whitaker School’s Sixth Form in Rainworth for A-levels has been selected to go abroad to China as part of a twelve month gap year project with Project Trust (Charity No. SCO 25668; www.projecttrust.org)

China is obviously a very well known country and is often in the news and is probably most famous for its rapid industrialisation and modernisation. These improvements are not the case for the whole country however. China is a vast country with many different communities and climates both meteorologically and economically. The harsh truth is that many parts of China are desperately poor and the main weapon in our arsenal to help people escape this poverty is education.

This is why I believe very strongly in the work I will be doing with Project Trust. During my year abroad I will be working with other volunteers in a school in a poor area of China predominantly teaching English to children of all ages, some of the people I will be teaching in the school may even be close to adulthood.

I will also be helping the teachers there to improve their teaching of the language so that it may continue after we leave. English is an essential language for these children to learn as they cannot progress through school without it and will certainly find it particularly difficult to find a job. I will also be taking on the responsibility of running extra-curricular activities in sport and drama but mainly in music as I am myself a musician. China has a huge music culture especially in classical music, a passion which I share and hope to communicate to the children in any way I can. It is for these reasons I know that my work in China will be highly valued.

College is building for the future

Vision West Notts is entering an “exciting new era” that will see it play an even bigger role in serving local communities. That’s the message from principal and chief executive Asha Khemka OBE, who says the college’s £24m investment in educational facilities and renewed focus on supporting enterprise, employability and business prosperity is only the start of its future plans. Addressing long-established business networking group Mansfield 2020, Mrs Khemka outlined the ongoing redevelopment of the college’s Derby Road campus before unveiling its new business strategy. Delegates were updated on the ambitious scheme’s progress, which has already seen an ultra-modern creative arts centre, called ‘Create’, open its doors. This will be followed by a brand-new teaching block, containing modern classrooms, ITC suites, hair and beauty salons, a specialist health spa and fine-dining restaurant with training kitchen, which is currently under construction.

Opening in January 2013, the facilities will be available to the public – giving students vital work experience and a springboard into employment or higher education. Meanwhile, construction of a state-of-the-art sports hall at the rear of the campus is rapidly taking shape. Due for completion in May, the new centre featuring six badminton-size courts, a sports science laboratory and modern changing facilities will also be open to the community.

Future plans include re-cladding the six-storey tower and surrounding buildings to rejuvenate the visual appearance of the campus, while opening a purpose-built training facility for engineering and motor vehicle students is also being explored. Mrs Khemka said the five strategic priorities launched by the college would go hand-in-hand with the new facilities, forming the blueprint for everything it does. The five priorities are:

Commercialisation: Maximising its investment in new facilities and offering commercial training to businesses

Employability: Equipping people with the skills for employment and providing recruitment support to employers

Enterprise and entrepreneurialism: Launching an ‘Entrepreneur Exchange’ and developing tomorrow’s business leaders and job-creators

Partnerships: Strengthening links with employers, schools and the local community

Destinations: Providing clear academic and vocational pathways for young people and adults, leading to sustainable employment.

It is all aimed at aligning Vision West Notts even more closely to the needs of its communities, said Mrs Khemka.

Hall-Fast Lands Export Honour Being Named ‘Midlands Exporter of the Year’.

Hall-Fast Managing Director, Malcolm Hall, was on hand to receive the prestigious honour at the 2012 Midlands Business Awards, held at the Hilton Metropole in Birmingham on Friday the 3rd February. This was the latest in a string of business awards for the six year old company, which has now added export success to its many other achievements.

Hall Fast is a local industrial supplies company, based in Boughton, Nottinghamshire, supplying specialist fasteners, industrial equipment and associated products, to companies across the UK and to 74 overseas destinations.

Friday’s Midlands Business Awards were judged by a panel which included Joe Elliott – Director of Coventry City FC, Richard Riley – Director of Universities, West Midlands and Jon Griffin – Business Editor of the Birmingham Mail. Host for the evening was BBC Midlands’ Kay Alexander. In winning the Midlands Exporter of the Year award, the judges said Hall-Fast had demonstrated outstanding performance in exporting, and innovative export strategies, leading to significantly increased business results. Since launching its exporting operation three years ago, at the height of the recession, Hall-Fast now exports to 74 countries and export sales are expected to be around 35% of turnover this year.

Commenting on his company’s latest success, Malcolm Hall said: “We are delighted to receive this honour; it’s a great reward for the hard work everyone here has put in over the last three years. I am now looking forward to working with local business support organisations to explain how we have approached this area of our business in the hope that it will inspire other companies to develop their own export strategies.”

few years as the government’s e-business and business start-

up adviser. He has recognised the increased demand upon

businesses to market themselves through Twitter, Facebook

and ‘Linked in’ and adopting cost effective solutions but the

lack of skills is a barrier to success. He presented to the panel

how he can take on this responsibility for the individual

business and support them with this 21st Century marketing

tool.

Welcome to

Mansfield

2020 The pioneering business

development and networking

organisation was setup with the

aim of promoting and revitalising

the towns of Mansfield and

Ashfield.

Mansfield 2020 networking

organisation represents the heart

of the local business community,

offering news, information and the

opportunity to promote your

business.

Chairman’s News Irvin’s ‘2020 Vision’

The biggest challenge we have is probably to redefine our communities and re-establish values to unite local people. These people are our customers and our employees and it's so important to work together with other members and agencies within Mansfield 2020 to meet such challenges. This comes at a time when the costs of running our local services come under close scrutiny and we are all aware that savings have got to be made in the local budget. Surely this is something Mansfield 2020 members can get involved in. First of all we can define what we need in an ideal world to sustain and grow our businesses. Then we can collectively come up with innovative ways of efficiently and effectively enhancing our region to meet these objectives and reduce the overall costs of our local services. Our undoubted strength is our networking capabilities but we are also building gravitas as a voice of business for our area. Members’ interests are represented on a number of strategic bodies and we are always looking for opportunities to enhance representation. We would like to invite our membership to collectively take on this challenge and be seen in another 20 years time to have had a major part to play in the next phase of successful regeneration of our town and region as we have been in the last 20 years. There are still many challenges ahead and we are confident that we will continue to move Mansfield towards a better future. Irvin Robinson

Monthly Mansfield 2020 Technical Briefing by Russell Jones of Fidler & Pepper Solicitors TUPE A Silent Killer?

TUPE. What is it? It’s not part of a Shakespearean play or a Yorkshire man's hairpiece. But it is something you need to know about if you are buying or selling a business. It ‘s an acronym that stands for - Transfer of Undertakings Protection of Employment. A real mouthful but it does say what it is – a system of protection for employees. Whether buying or selling a business which already employs people, TUPE can be the silent killer for the deal or even for profitably running the business afterwards or making the money you thought you wanted from the sale. It protects any employee who has been at the business for more than 1 year from simply being dismissed. And most importantly it controls who pays for the cost of bad employment practice. So go in and buy the company with a view to getting rid of staff to make it profitable and you could be in a mess. And with a big compensation and probable legal bill. Or sell with no thought as to who is responsible for redundancy payments if any crop up and you may be crying in your celebration drink and you part with your well earned cash. The buyer could end up with: Employees with contract terms that effect the profit from the business Employees with large redundancy entitlements which the buyer or new owner has to fund in the future to restructure the

business Employees with grievances and issues which the new owner has to deal with. The seller might just end up with a big bill when the new owner cuts through the staff bill. But things can be done to include: Getting the seller to come clean about employee contracts terms and grievance/disciplinary issues Getting the buyer to inform the seller if they have plans to reduce employment numbers. Give early thought to what/how you want the employees to fit in your view of the business for the future. The really sad part is that if you end up talking to me about it, I’m a litigator and that means it’s gone wrong and someone is picking up a large bill, which is never nice. So the motto as always is get early effective and inexpensive advice by asking the questions up front. The way forward is to get a business solicitor and HR adviser to be bringing up the relevant questions, and sorting through the employment contracts before the sale or purchase is finalised, to make sure you know the effect on the price either way. It’s only a flavour in a few words, but if you need anything more then please email or telephone Christie Limb or Joanne Godson from our business and HR department. Russell Jones Tel: 01623 448304

Local Business Ladies receive Prestigious Awards at the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire

Chamber of Commerce, Enterprising Women Excellence Awards.

Asha Khemka OBE (photo left), Principal and Chief Executive of Vision West

Nottinghamshire College in Mansfield, scooped top honours being named ‘Inspirational

Woman of the Year’ sponsored by Coutts and Co, at the 2011 Enterprising Women

Excellence Award in November at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire.

Raised in a remote village in India and married at the age of 15, Asha moved to Britain in

1978, aged 25, with her husband and their three young children. She overcame

significant cultural and language barriers to become the first female principal of a UK

college to be born and raised in India. Since taking up her post of the Mansfield College

in May 2006,

Asha has transformed it into one of the largest and top-performing colleges in the

country; with more than 20,000 students, an annual budget of £50m and a grade one

‘Outstanding’ ranking from Ofsted.

Asha, who sits on several national education boards, was awarded the OBE in 2009 for her services to education.

She said: “I am both delighted and humbled to receive this award. While personal recognition is always

satisfying, this accolade demonstrates that colleges are major businesses in their own right. Not only are colleges

at the very heart of the communities they serve, they also make a significant contribution to UK Plc through high-

quality education, training and economic regeneration determination".

Another renowned local business lady; Katrina Atherton, of ‘A* Media’ won Breakthrough

Business of the Year, sponsored by The Money Shop. ‘A* Media’ is a video production

company based in Nottinghamshire, specialising in producing online videos for a variety of

clients across the UK.

Katrina stated: “I'm absolutely astounded to not only have been short-listed as a finalist, but

to have actually won the award. We have worked really hard this year to further establish the

business and this award is not just for myself, but also for my business partner John.”

Other awards presented to success ladies were: The Community Champion Award, sponsored

by Westfield Health went to Carol Parkinson of Interface Management Development in

Nottingham. The Rising Star Award, sponsored by Rothera Dowson was awarded to Claire

Fletcher of Macildowie Recruitment in Nottingham. Team of the Year, sponsored by The

Money Shop, won by Blythe House Hospice in Chapel-en-le-Frith and Business Woman of the

Year, sponsored by University of Derby Corporate was presented to Lian Britchford of

Encompass Print Solutions in Ilkeston.

Jean Mountain, Chair of the Chamber’s Enterprising Women group, said: “Many congratulations to all of the

winners of this year’s Enterprising Women Excellence Awards. There are some very talented and hard-working

businesswomen in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire who play a massive part in the success of their business but

are often not recognised for their hard work and determination.

“These enterprising women make an important contribution to the local economy and their success stories will

hopefully inspire many other women to pursue their business dreams and these awards are all about

acknowledging and celebrating those achievements.”

Along with the category sponsors, the Enterprising Women Excellence Awards 2011 were kindly supported by

Chatsworth House, Hullabaloo Design and Print, Quadrant Visual Solutions and Changing Chairs.

Mansfield & Ashfield Anti WPL Zone.

A recent press release offered by Derbyshire and

Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce stated that a

significant number of employers in Nottingham have yet to

decide how they will prepare for the implementation of the

city’s controversial 'Workplace Parking Levy' this year.

On the eve of the deadline to the apply for a Workplace

Parking Levy licence, a new survey from the Derbyshire

and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce has found

that 80% of organisations still don’t know whether they will

absorb the costs associated with the WPL themselves;

pass them on to their employees; reduce the number of

staff parking places they offer or look at other options to

avoid or minimise their liabilities.

The WPL comes into force on 1 April 2012 and will require

all employers with 11 or more staff parking spaces to pay

an additional levy to Nottingham City Council. When the

charge is introduced, the estimated cost will be £279-a-

year for each parking space, rising to £364 in 2015 and in

future years in line with inflation. VAT will be added if it is

passed on to employees.

The Chamber stated that it could also have knock-on effect

on investment decisions by companies looking to locate in

the East Midlands or those already in Nottingham looking

to move elsewhere. “We’ve already seen evidence of

neighbouring local authorities advertising themselves as

WPL-free areas, which would be seen as an attractive

proposition to investors and businesses looking to relocate

away from Nottingham to avoid paying the levy."

At the High Life we see this as a fabulous opportunity for

Mansfield and Ashfield to invite both new and established

businesses to the area to escape the WPL. In addition

some businesses in the Nottingham City are planning to

pass on the levy to their employees and this may

encourage the return of many of our highly skilled local

workers who previously chose to work in the City?

above for this area, please email the Editor

Local Solicitor Retires after 50 years in practice A well known Sutton-in-Ashfield solicitor retired on the 31st January, exactly 50 years to the day since he started in the legal practice. Tony Slade, 70, retires from Fidler & Pepper Solicitors after starting as an Articled Clerk with them back in February 1962.

Mr Slade, a keen golfer, qualified as a solicitor in 1968 and then went on to buy the practice along with business partner Tony Lord from the last of the Pepper family in 1969. Since then he has seen the firm go from strength to strength through it’s offices in Sutton, Kirkby & Mansfield and more recently through the developments of its online services.

The reins of the firm will be kept firmly in the family as they have been handed over to Tony’s son Mark (photo right), who took over as Managing Partner in 2004. Mark is supported by three partners one of whom is Matt, also Mr Slade’s son.

Mark Slade commented: “Tony has established Fidler & Pepper as one of the leading firms within the area and we will continue to build on his good work. His friendly and caring manner was natural and his professionalism in his field has earned him an impressive reputation.”

“On behalf of all the team at Fidler & Pepper Solicitors, we wish Tony a long and very happy retirement - he is more than a father and business partner to me - he is also a good friend to many of us at the firm.”

6 Tips - Getting comfortable with Social Media

by Fardad Amirsaeedi [email protected], www.icewire.co.uk

Digital Brand Management Specialist

As soon as you mention Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin or SEO to the average person, you can expect the blood pressure to rise and the eyes role back in anticipation of being asked the question. “Which social media tools do you use? “ Many of you would like to say “all of them and I am loving it”. Well, some people do love it but very few use all of them. You will be relieved to know that the majority are

“consumers” of social media or social networking but not “practitioners” of it.. What’s the difference? Well let’s put it this way, you may be one of the many millions of people who use Facebook to share your daily activity with family and friends but you may not be so adept at building a successful fan page for your business. If you recognise that pattern then you are not alone. The most successful social media tools as mentioned at the beginning of this article engage its consumers at the personal level until they become familiar and comfortable with the general features and benefits before moving them onto the more sophisticated elements which often lie in the business packages. The packages often come with tutorials and manual downloads or step by step video guides but all encourage you to get onto an adoption ladder leading to commercialised services. It would be understandable to think that it is all a marketing ploy but actually it helps to graduate the individual from “consumer” to “user” and then “practitioner”, which is the desirable and sensible way to grow using these media formats. Here are some tips to help you to move forward comfortably; 1. Only use tools/services you feel comfortable with and then master it. 2. Select the services that have good video tutorials and help facility. They can often be found on YouTube.com done by third party practitioners. 3. Don’t over stretch yourself. Your time is valuable. 4. Be patient and do a little but often. 5. Quality is better than quantity if you want to build relationships. 6. Don’t be afraid to get professional support to help get you started. It takes time to build a decent social network using social media but a healthy commitment should prove to give a return on investment and a patient approach will breed confidence before you know it. You will notice your confidence growing when other people start to ask you for advice. It may come as a surprise when it happens and particularly when you know the answer. It is at this time you will really begin to enjoy it.

Hi and welcome to Di’s Leisure blog, the spot where I offer a short insight into my relaxing weekend and the local pleasure’s I enjoy. I hate not working and spend most of the time away from the desk feeling totally guilty but this New Year2012 I made a commitment that I would allow myself some quality 'me’ time. Therefore even though I never switch off from work I decided to endeavour upon my new regime and work now stops at 4pm on a Friday. So this week the start of my weekend began after a quick visit to the accountants followed by a nice trip to Costa Coffee for a tasty Americano and some serious Mansfield town people watching. A quick nip and out of a few local shops to check out the 'new in’ stock to search for a spring brightly coloured jacket to update my little bit tired winter wardrobe and then off home, of course picking up a bottle of Rioja from M & S to help with a big task I have planned for the weekend…. Having joined a book club recently to broaden my thinking, I now have a 420 page paper back to read within the next 10 days weeks. I have managed 50 pages in 21 days as it is a tough one being based on geometrics with the main story line based on the thesis that we are all just a trillion trillion atoms and could in the future be transmitted anywhere like TV. Sci-Fi never was my thing but thanks Sue, whose choice it was for this month. Saturday has now become the new Sunday with boring domestic duties, due to my recent commitment to join the local Sunday walking club. My dog Candy has once again fell in love with me as she is spending hours bounding around in the beautiful local countryside. Sherwood Pines being her favourite as she gets lots of remnants from the walkers after they have visited the café for breakfast. I love it too as I have made some fabulous friends and the local scenery is amazing. The worst thing I can’t wear high heels. Anyone who knows me will know how painful that is and please excuse the photo. But hey it is great fun and worth it. So collapsing on the settee upon return I have a couple of hours before I have to prepare dinner for my Son, Scott, who has been hard at work in the kitchen of a local restaurant all day. Well if he wants designer clothes he works for them! No soft Mumsy stuff here. But at least I don’t make him run around and do press ups in the snow like some Icelandic guy I read about in the mail recently - then again! So I put my feet up to watch a film I have been dying to see; Je t'aime Paris. Settling down with my very tired dog by my side we watch 15 short love stories all filmed with the backing of beautiful Parisian scenery. Seeing as I go there in 2 weeks I am trying to polish up my French, last spoken in school, a good few years ago. As the film was captioned I thought it would do the trick. Sadly no I couldn’t understand a word. So now not only do I have 370 pages of ‘The Human Race’, by O.C. Heaton to read I also have to go and buy a French phrase book from the Works in the Four Seasons next week. Bonjour, Comment Ca Va. Au Revoir! – or something like that Diane…See you next month!

Welcome to 'The High Life' Ladies section. Now is the

time to put your feet up and take a few minutes to

relax with your favourite cuppa.

This is the spot where we will be offering you a little

insight into Diane, the Editor's, weekend leisure. Also

we want to offer a regular book review so you may

wish to lighten our reading load by sharing your recent

favourite read? We would love to hear from you.

Did you know that before the WWL ( Women's Wine

Lib) in the '60's, ladies were not allowed to choose the

wine never mind buy it and as for a girlie night in that

didn't exist! So we want to help you enjoy this freedom

and see our regular wine testing feature on page 31..

This month see what Merry Marion has to say about

her Choice of Merlot. Let's see what Sassy Suzy has to

say about next month's Shiraz? We all need some fun

in our life so we hope this section will offer just that.

Enjoy Diane

Do you think you drink enough? Do you sometimes feel light headed, dizzy, irritable, fatigued or have headaches?

All these could be physical signs of de-hydration! Water is essential for life and all chemical reactions in the human body take place in a fluid environment. Up to 75% of our body weight is water and our brains comprise of 85% water! So it's not surprising that when dehydrated our attention and concentration can decrease by 13% and short term memory by as much as 7%.

The human body cannot store extra water and therefore is in a constant need of topping up. However it is important to know that your daily cuppa of English tea or coffee or that lunch time glass of wine will not do the job! What you need is either pure water or some herbal teas. As much as 1 litre for every 50lb of body weight! Yes it's quite a lot and it will take some time to getting used to drinking that amount of liquid every day.

But your reward will be younger and more vibrant looking skin, optimally performing brain and digestive system and general increase in the overall well-being! So keep glugging! The High Life Ladies Guide to Finding Fine Wine… This month we look at Merry Marion's verdict on her choice of Merlot* Shopping for wine should be fun and exciting. Also perhaps a little exploration and with every new

bottle a new discovery. However, time is of the essence and these days you can buy a nice fine wine

from both a large local supermarket, a high street store or a local retail store around the corner.

A reliable tip though is not to go for the real cheappies as they often taste bitter like vinegar,

especially when wanting a full bodied red wine-always go for the half price deals. These offers are

there to entice you in the shop and you can get a fabulous bottle of wine for £5.

This month's wine choice by Marion was actually from the local Co-operative Store at £4.99 - a

Chilean Merlot. "The introduction of the label enticed me", stated Marion -'Blessed with a little rainfall

and long sunny days, Chile has a near-perfect climate for growing grapes'. "Ooh I can feel the sun

already!" It continued 'This medium bodied red wine exhibits aromas of blackberries, plums and

spices which lead into a palate of ripe black fruits'. " Doesn't that just sound delicious". And the funny line - "Drink

within 12 months of purchase".

Marion's view "A gorgeous wine for those who prefer a dry flavour. I love my red wines with some blue stilton and

green olives which I had already picked up in the same store. There was a lovely fruity aroma when I opened the bottle

and the wine went down lovely and smooth. Delightful value for money too". Next month let's see what Sassy Suzy has

to say about her choice of Shiraz! *Cover name for writer of review. Always drink wine sensibly!

CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy is fast gaining credibility and popularity as a way

to overcome the stresses and strains of everyday life. It has

been around since the 19th century but over the years has

undergone many changes.

The main aim of Hypnotherapy is self healing and self change

and can be very effective in dealing with negative thoughts and

ideas, distressing feelings, anxiety and stress, (and related

conditions such as insomnia, and panic attacks). It is also highly

suitable for treating fears, phobias and long-term habits such as

smoking and weight problems. Hypnotherapy is equally as

effective in enhancing and improving areas such as confidence

building, public speaking and sports performance.

Hypnotherapy is a safe procedure when it is employed by a

qualified responsible and experienced practitioner and the best

way to think of hypnosis is as a state of deep relaxation and

focus. During Hypnosis the client is in a deep state of relaxation

and focus at which time the conscious mind becomes detached

from every day worries and the subconscious part of the mind

is more open to suggestion. In this deeply relaxed state the

Hypnotherapist can make suggestions that change long

standing thoughts, fears or unwanted feelings and behaviours

that would otherwise seem difficult, if not impossible to change.

A Different Approach to Health & Wellbeing with Alternative Therapy

Alternative Therapy is any healing practice that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine and is often based on historical or cultural traditions. There may also be some spiritual or religious belief or new approaches to healing. Alternative Therapy is becoming increasingly popular and acceptable and may be used to treat many ailments ranging from simple aches and pains through to dietary issues. Many people turn to alternative therapy after having a long term problem that 'conventional' medicine hasn't cured. Also in more years people are turning to alternative therapy due to it's increasing proven results against stress related issues. Alternative therapy includes treatments such as ; clinical hypnotherapy, acupuncture, Reiki, reflexology, osteopathy to name a few. Over the next few editions we aim to offer an insight into the individual therapies and some of the therapists will be explaining what they believe their treatments may offer. Please see this month's brief into 'Clinical Hypnotherapy' by the Clem Turner Hypnotherapy Practice, Mansfield.

Are you fed up of dieting?

If so then read on…..the majority of the clients who come to our Hypnotherapy practice have been on every diet possible, only to put back all the weight they’ve lost and more besides once they start eating ‘normally’ again.

It’s a vicious circle because generally diets just don’t work long term, a dieter’s weight goes down then up again, we call it yo-yo dieting and this is a situation which leaves people disappointed, and disillusioned. All that hard work for nothing.

When you’re on a ‘diet’ you are limited to points or calories and certain foods are restricted or banned. You feel deprived of certain things and feel guilty for even thinking you might just have one of your forbidden foods. And what happens when you feel deprived? Right, you want it even more.

The Clem Turner Hypnotherapy Practice has a Weight Management Programme that is proved, tried and tested. We help people to achieve their goal weight and become healthier and happier without any reference to a diet – in fact the word ‘diet’ is NEVER used. Believe it or not – we encourage you to eat what you want when you want and by using

Hypnotherapy we are able change unwanted, unhealthy eating patterns, replacing them with the desire to eat healthy nourishing foods that are good for you. So, by eating what you want when you want it you will get rid of your excess weight and then keep it off forever.

If you’d like to know more about how to reduce your weight safely WITHOUT DIETING please give me a ring on 01623 556234 or 07960788093, Margaret Turner, Clinical Hypnotherapist

Money Talk

Hi and welcome to our new column, Money Talk, delivered to you by our team of experts from Assured Money Solutions.

The aim of this column is to offer up some simple, good old fashioned financial advice without adding on all the boring, and often unnecessary, complicated bits. Feel free to write in at any point should you have any questions or queries and we’ll do our best to answer them in the next edition.

For the past six years our team of experts have worked on local radio, appeared in most local papers and have recently provided advice on the National news. We also feature regularly on SKY 834 as guests on a community TV money advice programme.

Our advice will range from the simplest of areas such as credit card switching, to the more serious of subjects – Debt! But don’t worry – we most definitely will not be looking at the negative side of any subject, nor will we gloss over the reality. Our aim is to provide a workable, smart and realistic solution to issues that we all face. We look forward to working with you all!

Mansfield Woodhouse Train Station circular route

Distance 12.33 miles duration 1.12 hrs

A circular tour that I call the Two pits trail taking in Shirebrook and Sherwood pit tip which both have pretty good viewing points from the top. Stop off about half way round at Market Warsop for a bite to eat. The trail is mostly non roadway apart from the little bit a the beginning and at Warsop Vale to Shirebrook pit tip. Sherwood tip is the higher climb the view far outweighs the effort

GOLF TIPS Improving your Chip

Play your chip shots similar to the way you putt. When you are chipping you are trying to get the ball on the putting surface quickly and allowing it to run to the hole. Many players try and use the same club for all chip shots. Don’t be afraid to use anything from a wedge to a 6 or even a 5 iron. The longer club will give you more roll. Play the ball in the centre of your stance. Choke down on the club some and tilt the shaft forward so that your hands are left of centre. Your hands should be forward of the ball. This will de-loft the golf club and put some forward spin on the ball. When chipping your wrists should remain still. there is no need to break your wrist, this leads to mishits of all shapes and sizes. Your weight should be 60 to 70 percent on your left side (right side for lefties). Your lower body should remain still throughout the swing. Chipping should be looked at as an extended putt. Get the ball on the putting surface and rolling early. The photo right shows how the swing and stance should be carried out to make a perfect chip shot.

Leisure

Regular Feature: Living the Family High Life — Introducing Jo’s Jollies...................................... The pace of life for families with young children is hard to keep up with these days. It is too easy to get caught up on the hamster wheel of work, school and kids activities and forget about the simple pleasures that come from spending a few hours together as a family. In this feature, we hope to bring you details of places locally where you can go as a family for either a few hours or a day, and not always spending a fortune either. My family is my husband Simon, our two very energetic, sports mad boys, William and Lewis, both ten, yes, twins, and our daughter Eleanor who is 3 and just loves to get stuck in, doing whatever “my boys” (as she calls them) are doing, but wearing pink! Here we are a couple of weeks ago at Sherwood Pines near Edwinstowe with our dog Jack, camera shy!; we spent a couple of hours there making the most of an opportunity because the boys’ Saturday football match had to be cancelled due to a frozen pitch. We had a lovely walk through the woods in the frost, collecting pine cones as we went, ready to use to light our log burner (apparently they are excellent to get the fire going!) then had a play on the park with a coffee and a bacon sandwich. It is great having the Pines on our doorstep; mad keen mountain bikers travel from afar to Sherwood Pines and use it as a base to go off cycling the area or follow one of the many trails through the woods. Hubby likes to go mountain biking at the weekends and often either passes through there en route to Clumber or stays at The Pines and follows the Red Route Trail; the red route is pretty tricky in parts but there are other more leisurely routes perfectly safe for families. If you don’t want to take your own bikes you can hire them once you are there, or a leisurely stroll through the woods stopping off at each of the play areas is just as enjoyable. The Cycle Centre also has a full range of bikes and gear to buy and will service and repair your bike, so no need to worry about the odd puncture. Car park fees have recently changed, it’s £1 for an hour or £4 to stay all day with all monies generated re-invested in the Pines, you can also purchase a yearly pass, which is worthwhile if you are going to be a frequent visitor. As well as seeing the odd squirrel in the trees and hearing the birds, you will also hear some squawks of a different kind as visitors dare to have a go at the Go Ape Zip Wire Challenge! So l why not go along and take a look at it, will you take up the challenge? A bit scary for me but I’m sure the boys will want to have a go soon, they are now just old enough, 10 years is the minimum age. Lots of other activities are on offer there from wildlife activities with a Park Ranger such as pond dipping and bush craft in the school holidays to a running club which meets weekly. It was great for me when Eleanor was a baby as we went together every week and joined a buggy fit class; a ranger takes you a power walk / jog around the pines pushing baby, stopping periodically to do different toning exercises. In the summer The Pines takes on a different feel again, you can take a picnic, be there all day, and get a good cricket match going; there is also a dedicated BBQ area. Look out a swell for the outdoor concerts each summer, we took the boys a couple of years ago to see McFly, it was great and very well organised. Will Young is one of the artist’s appearing this summer. Sherwood Pines has everything you need to take a few hours getting back to nature, whether you are full of energy and fancy the excitement of the Red Route or Go Ape, a group activity such as running or buggy fit meeting other people or a simple stroll with the dog. and soon you will be able to have a go on a Segway too. We will review places all around the Mansfield and Ashfleld area; if there is anywhere you think would be worth visiting please do get in touch and let us know, we’ll take the children and let you know how we get on. I wonder where we will have been by the next issue - and will we be in snow or spring sunshine, let’s wait and see. The Viaduct Vigil by Local Poet; Gillian Baguley

I keep watch over Mansfield With my ever seeing eyes,

Carriages bringing visitors, slow Down to the gateway, hustling,

Bustling people, joyful to be Here, to wander down to

The shops, to browse and to buy. Hear ye, Hear ye, Hear ye.

Let the Buttercross Market begin. Westgate beckons, an array of wares. Lord George Bentick would be proud

As the centrepieces of Mansfield, Heritage past present and future. Here yesterday, here today, here

Tomorrow, different, yet the same,

Always there.

Cricket at Clumber

It’s like being on holiday, Mediterranean,

This body-line heat and glare- I could be almost anywhere,

But I’m here. Eyes closed, sun dozed,

Semi-conscious, Drifting aimless as feathery clouds,

Scars in the impenetrable blue. Clichéd with ‘leather on willow’,

‘Strawberries and cream’ Quintessentially English,

Living the dream

The High Life Our Vision

“We chose to move to Mansfield from

Nottingham in 2007 due to two main factors.

One being that house for house we were

certainly getting much better value for money

by moving here. Secondly, with added good

transport links and access to city life in 30

mins travel time, it was a simple decision in

the end”. (Helena Lord Chamber service
