THE HIGHLANDER Volume 08/2017 August, 2017 AUGUST BRINGS MEMORIES OF THE SEASHORE Residents memories of the seashore quickly brought to mind the popular English rhyme based on a song written by Terry Sullivan - She Sells Seashells by the Seashore! The song and rhyme are about a real seashell seller Mary Anning who collected and sold sea shells from 1799 – 1847. This month’s outings take us to the seashore. On August 10th, it’s a trip to the Santa Monica Pier for a leisurely walk and shopping on the pier followed by a luncheon overlooking the ocean. Due to resident popular request, we’re off to Aquarium Pacifica on August 17th. Let’s end our seaside memories and adventures with a Long Beach Harbor Blue Whale Watching Cruise on August 31st. Concerts on the Patio continue throughout the month of August. August 5th brings back pianist and guitarist Dean Dobson with his American Songbook & Variety Show; songs from great American composers - Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and more. His guitar repertoire includes Elvis, The Everly Brothers, James Taylor, The Beatles and more. August 12th It’s An Enchanted Evening with pianist Mark Cole presenting Broadway and operatic soloist Mariana. On August 19th, it is a pleasure and an honor for us to bring to you legendary actress and songstress Susan Watson presenting a lifetime of romantic musicals with songs such as I Do, I Do, What Did I Ever See in Him?, In Other Words, Seventeen and more. Our Concerts on the Patio end on August 26th with The Hi-Tops Dancers of the Buena Park Speech and Language Development Center. Residents, families and friends, please join us on Saturday evenings for the many sounds of music and entertainment that are sure to bring you enjoyment and relaxation. Our Getting To Know You this month will feature resident volunteer Eric Souers. Let’s get to know all about Eric, our newly appointed Bible Study Volunteer. Look inside this Newsletter for complete details and descriptions of all our August Programs, Events & Outings.

JPL Lecture Series Thursday, August 24th at 6:30 PM40 Years in Space: Voyager’s Remarkable Journey Continues: In 1977, NASA’s twin Voyager spacecraft embarked on an incredible journey to the outer planets and beyond. After delivering stunning images of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, the probes sailed on to study the boundary of our heliosphere, the bubble that encompasses our sun, planets and solar wind. Voyager 1 crossed that frontier in August 2012, becoming the fi rst human-made object in interstellar space, while Voyager 2 is expected to enter the space between the stars in the coming years. In this talk, Alan Cummings, Senior Research Scientist at Caltech and Voyager team member since 1973, revisits the highlights of the last 40 years and speculate on what lies ahead for the intrepid Voyagers. For as long as they continue communicating with Earth, the Voyagers may discover even more wonders before becoming Earth’s silent ambassadors to the Milky Way, orbiting the center of our galaxy forever.
