He also stated that the Pasco Fire Dept. may apply for a grant through the state that would pay for the unit but he's not sure how long it would take to receive it. There was a question about how to operate the unit and Bob stated that when you open the unit there are talking instructions how to operate it. There was a discussion about the merits of purchasing a unit. A motion was made by Sue Sullivan to purchase the unit outright for the community building and placed in the lobby. In Memoriam

April 1st Paul Weegar passed away peacefully at home while in Hospice care after a lengthy battle with lung cancer and its treatment ramifications. Paul and his wife Chris lived at 38431 Tee Time Road. In addition to Chris, Paul is survived by five children,

seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Paul was best known to Highlanders as a kind, brilliant man, a classical music aficionado, and the local “go to guy” to get help

from for computer and communications problems.

Kudos and Thanks to the Retiring Social Committee

You Guys Have Been GREAT!!!

We have all enjoyed the many parties, feasts, entertainments, trips, and other social opportunities you

orchestrated. We heartily thank you for all your terrific ideas and tireless effort.

Call for Volunteers and Activity Sponsors

Now that we have a new Social Committee in place to plan activities and events, it is time for the rest of us to consider how we will contribute to the Highlands’ activities.

The Social Committee is NOT responsible for ALL community activities, nor is it fair to expect the individual members of the Social Committee to shoulder all the tasks required to make an event successful. Many hands lighten the load, so volunteers outside of the Committee itself are essential to maintaining a vibrant social calendar.

If you are interested in helping with a particular event or just in general, contact any one of the Social Committee members, or the member who is the Chairman of the work in which you have a skill or interest (i.e. entertainment, catering, decoration, etc.). They can always use help with planning, ticket sales, setup, decorating, food preparation, serving, clean-up, and breakdown of setups.

If you have an idea for an event or activity, start it up on your own (i.e. crafting, games of skill, charity fund raiser, casual meets, etc.) or discuss your idea with the Social Committee for help arranging (i.e. trips, themed party).

Involvement and enthusiasm are what make the Highlands are great community. Become a part of it!!

Mahjongg Players

There is organized mahjongg play at the clubhouse on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Players meet at 1:00 PM on Monday and Friday and at 9:30 AM on Tuesday. The session on Tuesday does not involve prize money. If you are interested in learning to play mahjongg, contact either Nancy Meech or Zoe Lyons.

Marathons are generally held the first Monday of the month. We start marathon play at 9:00 AM and play straight through until 1:00 PM. Throughout the morning we take short breaks to move around and partake of food brought by the players for themselves. Up to 16 games can be played during a marathon depending on the speed of play. $5 per player is collected for the prize fund for the marathon. All players are welcome. Marathon players are encouraged to come early so there is sufficient time to get everyone signed in and games set up so play can begin promptly at 9:00 AM.

The winners of April’s marathon from a field of 9 were: 1st place - Chris Weegar, 2nd place - Di Sponsler, 3rd place tie - Pam Gregory and Sue Klinger May’s marathon will be on Monday, May 1st. June’s marathon will be on June 5th. Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board several weeks before each marathon.

Please call Barb Geiling or any other committee member if you desire any of these services, if you know of a neighbor who needs help, or if you are interested in helping this committee in any way.

The Sunshine Committee lends support and a helping hand to residents experiencing health challenges or dealing with grief. We are prepared to make hospital and home visits, send cards, bring home-made soup, provide transportation for doctor visits, and help with pets in absences due to crises.

$1 buys an envelope with 100 tickets. (1 ticket = 1 penny) To “bid” on an item, you’ll place some of your tickets in a bag

next to your desired item. Once everyone has distributed

their tickets, one ticket from each bag will be drawn to

identify the winner of each item.

Please consider donating some items for our auction. They should be new or fairly new items of any kind (household, personal, games, toys, tools, kitchen ware, decorative, etc.).

There are no size limits. Any items you wish to contribute can be dropped off in the craft room on the table marked for same, or bring

them to either Barb Geiling’s or Joan Shaia’s homes. Thanks for your help. While we’ve collected a considerable number of items already, more are always appreciated. So if you haven’t already located something to donate, you still have time!

Veterans of the Highlands

Anyone interested in being part of a Veterans group here in the Highlands, please get in touch directly with Bob Gorrell. Bob’s phone number can be found in the Highlands directory.

On Sunday, May 14th, many of us will celebrate Mother’s day. It is a time to appreciate not only your mother, but also all mothers you know and the special people in

your life no matter who they are. The following is for all of them.

Somebody said it takes about six weeks to get back to normal after you've had a baby... Somebody doesn't know that once you're a mother, 'normal' is history.

* * * Somebody said you learn how to be a mother by instinct...

Somebody never took a three-year-old shopping. * * *

Somebody said being a mother is boring.... Somebody never rode in a car driven by a teenager with a driver's permit.

* * * Somebody said if you're a 'good' mother, your child will 'turn out good'....

Somebody thinks a child comes with directions and a guarantee. * * *

Somebody said you don't need an education to be a mother.... Somebody never helped a fourth grader with his math.

* * * Somebody said you can't love the second child as much as you love the first....

Somebody doesn't have two children. * * *

Somebody said the hardest part of being a mother is labor and delivery....

Somebody never watched her 'baby' get on the bus for the first day of kindergarten … or on a plane headed for military 'boot camp.'

* * * Somebody said a mother can stop worrying after her child gets married...

Somebody doesn't know that marriage adds a new son or daughter-in-law to a mother's heartstrings.

* * * Somebody said a mother's job is done when her last child leaves home....

Somebody never had grandchildren. * * *

Somebody said your mother knows you love her, so you don't need to tell her.... Somebody isn't a mother.

Enjoy your special celebration on Mother’s Day!!

• Chris Weegar then reminded everyone that our resident developed community guidelines require a full community vote to approve any purchase over $500 that will be made with funds from the community treasury. Bob Gorrell therefore suggested that we drive the cost to the community treasury under $500 so we could vote immediately on the motion. Meeting participants took up a collection and donated $317 on the spot.

• Sue Sullivan withdrew her motion and Norm Jacobsen made a new motion to supplement funds collected with no more than $500 from the community treasury to provide sufficient funds to pay for the difference once all contributions were tabulated ($937 minus $200 from HTA, minus $317 collected with the remainder from the community funds). The motion was seconded by Sue Sullivan and passed unanimously.

• Exactly twelve residents volunteered to serve on the Social Committee for the next two years so no vote is required and the new Committee accepted by acclamation . Those residents are: Charlie Basile, Ken Coyne, Jan Curtis, Lorraine Davenport, Marie Garfinkel, Valorie Hansen, Beth Impson, Anne LaFontaine, Ned Sponsler, Sue Sullivan, Judy Vesely and Ken White.

• There was additional discussion about the handicap buttons not working. Bob Gorrell met with Holly to discuss. Bob Worth is getting a quote to install an electrical throw which will keep doors locked automatically and unlocked in the morning.

• David Neil brought to our attention that recently the mulch caught on fire by the pool due to the wind and suggested smoking be restricted to the gazebo area. Also, he noted that there are no grab bars in the pool showers but he will discuss with Holly.

There was no additional business. The meeting adjourned at 9:48 a.m.

Looking for a Contributing Writer to Restart Our “Meet Your Highlands Family” Monthly Feature

For a number of years we had a widely appreciated semi-monthly column “Meet Your Highlands Family” in the Highlands Newsletter. Each column highlighted a different household, providing a description of the featured residents, where they came from, what they enjoy doing, and what drew them to Florida and the Highlands. It was a way for residents to get to know their neighbors.

The job consists of selecting a household for an interview, meeting with the members of a household to gather facts, taking a picture of them, and then summarizing the information into an article for the newsletter. Past write-ups were typically less than 1/2 a page. Some interviewees even helped to write the article.

If you are interested in starting this column back up, or creating a regular column of your own design, please contact either of the Newsletter Editors - Vicki Rudegeair or Chris Weegar.

Chair Yoga for Seniors Tuesdays and Thursdays in the clubhouse main hall

9:00 - 9:45 a.m. These exercise sessions are open to everyone at no charge. We spend 45 minutes on

gentle exercise guided by video. Included are sitting and standing positions beside your chair. The exercises help you with balance, feet, shoulders, back, neck and knees.

Contact Irene Mills with questions.

Bocce Ball

The last scheduled Bocce Ball game for this season is Saturday, May 27th. Our next season begins Saturday, October 7th. Nonetheless, the Bocce ball courts are open year-round for your use.

Happy Hookers

We meet once a week, on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 12:00 in the craft room. Many of the pieces we create are given to charitable organizations. If you want to learn how to knit or crochet, there are experienced needle crafters present to teach you.

Jo Basile

Yarn of any kind and/or cash donations to buy yarn for our charity projects are always appreciated.

The Happy Hookers would like to thank the anonymous donor of the 100+ hats put in the craft room a few weeks ago. Half of the hats, and some completed baby blankets, are being donated to the Maternity Wing at the Vets Hospital in Tampa. They are being delivered via the VFW in Zephyrhills. The remainder of the hats will be sent to the Zephyrhills Pregnancy Center.

So, once again, whoever you are, we sincerely thank you. Your charity is exceptional.

PAINTING SESSIONS

Thursdays starting at 12:30

Your neighbors hate it when you don’t pick it up! The “Guidelines for Living” you signed when you arrived explicitly directs you to

take care of it! This applies to common areas as well as your neighbors’ yards. If you are one of the dog owners who doesn’t pick up after your dog, please

change your ways or keep your dog solely in your yard! Thanks to all of you who do consistently clean up after your pets.

Ping Pong / Table Tennis

We meet Tuesday and Friday mornings from 10:00 AM ‘til 12:00 noon every week in the clubhouse (dance floor). Play is open to anyone interested in Ping Pong. We welcome beginners as well as seasoned veterans, guys and gals, to this exciting and fun game. Everyone will get turns playing. We do NOT play by National Table Tennis Association Rules, but rather by House Rules (Perry’s simple rules).

Weekly Poker

What would an active adult community be without regular poker games? We meet on Wednesday evenings in the clubhouse and start promptly at 6:30 p.m.

Monthly Bridge

We have a monthly bridge game established, usually on the second Wednesday evening of the month - but subject to change based on player availability. What we’d really like to do, is have more than one table. If you enjoy bridge, or have played in the past but are a bit rusty, please give me a call and let me know you are interested. When I’m scheduling the next month’s play, I’ll check to see if you want to play and your availability.

Trash Pickup and Recycling

Trash Pick-up: scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays. Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are scheduled holidays when pickup isn’t scheduled. When there is no pickup, customers may put out double the amount of trash on the next scheduled pickup day.

Recycling (curbside program): Aluminum & metal cans, clear, green & brown glass bottles and jars, all plastic (except #6) and glass containers, and paper and cardboard may be left in labeled, rigid, reuseable containers at the curb very early on the first and third Wednesday each month.

Newspapers: A recycling bin for newspaper and other printed materials stands outside our clubhouse behind the kitchen. All types of printed paper such as newspaper, phone books, catalogs, and books. Cardboard from boxes is also acceptable as long as the box is broken down so that it lies flat. The payment made for papers is paid to the Highlands Residents’ Community Treasury.

Yard refuse: Call Holly if you wish to have HTA staff pick up lawn refuse you’ve created during a yard clean-up. If you’ve had professionals clean-up your yard, they should remove the refuse as part of their service.

Submitting Items for Publication: As always, thanks are extended to those who contributed information for this

month’s issue. All articles and updates should be sent to [email protected] or deposited in the box

on the clubhouse bulletin board no later than the 20th of the month preceding publication. Every effort is made

to include all submissions, but occasionally omissions will occur. Your understanding is appreciated. Comments and

articles submitted anonymously are ignored. Please note that items submitted for the newsletter are subject to

editing for spelling, grammar, brevity and propriety.

Contributions for Causes

Food Pantry of Zephyrhills

Canned and other non-perishable items can be dropped off in the clubhouse for delivery to the Food Pantry of Zephyrhills. What started as a Christmas project by the Sunshine Committee has turned into a year round collection effort. There is a basket for donation in the main meeting room, just inside the double doors from the lobby. Sunshine Committee members empty and deliver goods left on a regular basis.

Meals on Wheels Papers and bottles/cans can be brought to the East Pasco Meals on Wheels, 38145 15th Avenue, Zephyrhills (813) 782-7859. They have someone manning the collections from 7 - 11 am, but trailers are available for drop-offs 24 hours a day. Directions are 301 South to 15th Avenue, left on 15th, down two blocks to the facility. It's at the corner of 15th Avenue and 8th Street.

Habitat for Humanity Bring your used aluminum cans to Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church, 37015 Orange Valley Lane, Dade City (Corner of Fort King Road and Clinton). The Church recycles aluminum cans for HABITAT FOR HUMANITY. A recycling container stands next to the dumpster in the parking lot across the street from the church.

Gulfside Regional Hospice

Contributions such as clothing, household goods, and furniture are accepted for their thrift shop just to the south of our main entrance across US 301. They are open for donations Monday thru Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Ronald McDonald House Aluminum can tabs are being collected in a box located in the craft room (previously in the lobby by the map table). John Williams on Country Club monitors the box and sends on the tabs to benefit Ronald McDonald House when justified by the quantity. Help is deeply appreciated.

Library Donations We are proud of our library and welcome your donations. However, since space is limited we cannot accept the following items:

Encyclopedias text books reference books magazines older than 3 months outdated travel or tour books appliance manuals VCR movie tapes

Thank you! Your cooperation is appreciated.

Ticket Sales for Social Committee

Sponsored Highlands Events

Unless stated otherwise on event flyers or newsletter ads, tickets for all Social Committee sponsored events are sold at the clubhouse on Thursday nights before bingo and before Community meetings which are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cash payment is preferred, but checks made out to the Community Treasurer, Jim Sullivan, are acceptable.

When tickets are sold, a ticket is required to participate in any part of the event.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds will be issued but you are free to “transfer” or sell your ticket to other homeowners. An alternative is to have someone turn in your ticket and get meals “to go” when you or someone in your party are unable to attend.
