SO2: Sulphur Dioxide. Short-term exposure can harm the respiratory system, making breathing difficult. It can affect visibility by reacting with other air
particles to form haze and stain culturally important objects such as statues
and monuments.
NO2: Nitrogen Dioxide. Aggravates respiratory illness, causes haze to form byreacting with other air particles, causes acid rain, pollutes coastal waters.
CO: Carbon monoxide. High concentration in air reduces oxygen supply tocritical organs like the heart and brain. At very high levels, it can cause
dizziness, confusion, unconsciousness and even death.
PM2.5 & PM10: Particulate matter pollution can cause irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath, reduced
lung function, irregular heartbeat, asthma attacks, heart attacks and premature
death in people with heart or lung disease

Many parents whose childrenwere admitted under the RTEquota to private schools andhave completed Class 8 in the201920 academic year are left inthe lurch as the State government has not extended the RTEquota till Class 10.
School managements are asking these parents to pay the feesif they want their children to beadmitted to Class 9. As many parents are unable to pay the fees, their children have been deniedaccess to online classes, they alleged. There are parents whohave pulled out their childrenout of school and admitted themin either low budget privateschools or government schoolsas they are unable to pay the
fees. An autorickshaw driverwhose daughter completed Class8 in 201920 under the RTE quota in a private school said thatthe school was not allowing herto attend online classes for Class9 as the government has not extended it to this year.
“I have not put her in anotherschool as I am waiting for theState government to take a decision. She has not touched a notebook or textbook since March. She is keen on studying, but I
cannot pay the ₹40,000 that theprivate school is asking me topay,” he said.
The State government, however, has not taken any decision inthis regard which has put parents in a dilemma. While theState government was initiallymulling over the possibility ofextending the quota beyondClass 8 for students from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribecommunities, the move was metwith opposition from parentswho were not from these communities and they demandedthat it should be extended to allstudents.
Officials of the Department ofPrimary and Secondary Education said the State government isnot keen on extending this moveas it incurs a cost of around ₹560crore on tuition reimbursementsto private schools.
Across all classes, 5.06 lakhstudents are currently studyingin private schools under the 25%reservation quota.
