Summer at the Hippodrome and our second season already… We’re making a few adjustments and working hard to get everything just right – you’ll notice we are trying out some different screening times and watch this space for plans to facilitate larger groups wanting to pre-book their refreshments at our café. Pick up a feedback card next time you visit and let us know what you think!

There will be something for everybody in this programme, whether you are looking for a thriller or comedy, independent or Hollywood productions, an outing with the kids or a rendezvous with friends. Alongside the best recent releases like the new Harry Potter and Ken Loach’s latest, I’ve picked some real gems of classic cinema including a rare big-screen outing of Spirit of the Beehive to commemorate the start of the Spanish Civil War, and screenings of Casablanca and Singing in the Rain – the two runners-up in our local vote for the first film to screen at the Hippodrome’s launch.

We celebrate the centenary of ‘Cubby’ Broccoli in June with a season of digitally restored Bond favourites. See inside for details of a combined ticket offer with the 007-themed Bo’ness Motor Museum and you’ll need look no further for a Father’s Day treat to remember!

At the Hippodrome we’re commited to putting on special events that celebrate our heritage, showcase filmmakers or mark national initiatives and ultimately connect the Hippodrome to the community it serves. This season look out for an evening with BAFTA-winning cameraman Eddie McConnell who will introduce a selection of his films (including a documentary featuring the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway) plus an exclusive screening of ‘The Inheritance’ presented by the cast and crew who will share their experiences of making a micro-budget feature in their native Scotland.

Our Saturday morning Jeely Jar Screenings have been a huge success. Remember we have one Jeely Jar Special every season – this season’s special is Jacques Tati’s comedy masterpiece Jour de Fête screeing in National Cycling Week. Bring your clean jam jar with matching lid, to this screening only, for our 2-for-1 offer.

Meanwhile the Big Sceen Bo’ness group goes from strength to strength. Having premiered their film ‘No Place Like Home’ at the Hippodrome in May I am delighted to announce the first title selected by their Youth Programming Team a Laurel and Hardy feature: ‘Sons of the Desert’, showing on Saturday 18th July.

Let The Right One In This beautifully filmed production invests a familiar story with startling originality. Oskar is the constant victim of school bullies who longs for a friend and ally. His wish is granted when a strange young girl moves in next door – isolated and friendless like him, but for some reason, only coming out to play at night… Already picking up over 40 award wins this delicately handled piece is at once a coming-of-age tale, a first-love story and a macabre horror. Catch it now, before the inevitable American re-make!

In The Loop Glasgow-born Iannucci directs this close-to-the-knuckle political satire about the back corridors of British and American politics – think ‘Yes, Minister’ but with eye-watering invective. Peter Capaldi is brilliant as the foul-mouthed and venomous press secretary who tries, with increasing mania, to marshal a gaff-prone junior minister and his wet-behind-the-ears press assistant. The trio end up in Washington where they encounter bullish but peace-mongering Major Miller (played by TV’s Tony Soprano) and war is inadvertently declared.

Tony Manero In Pinochet’s Chile at the end of the 70s, anti-hero Raúl is obsessed with Tony Manero – John Travolta’s character in ‘Saturday Night Fever’. We follow the wannabe showbiz star as he carves a trail of murderous violence and crime in his quest to realise his silver screen dreams. The dictator’s reign of terror is the backdrop for this intelligent and dark allegory of masculine identity and alienation and shares much with Scorsese’s ‘Taxi Driver’.

Chéri United with his writer and leading lady 21 years after ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, Frears has created a romantic and elegiac grown-up drama. With a screenplay by Christopher Hampton (‘Atonement’), ‘Chéri’ is a classy love story set in 1920s Paris. The lovers at the film’s centre are retired courtesan Lea (Pfeiffer) and Chéri (Friend) – the son of Lea’s rival Mme. Peloux (Bates) who is trying to secure her own future by means of an arranged marriage for her son.

17 Again Divorced and jobless Mike (Perry) wishes for a second chance at life, and gets it, in this likeable comedy starring Hollywood darling, Zac Efron, as Mike’s younger self. After a nostalgic trip back to his old school Mike meets a mysterious caretaker and is transformed into the teenager he used to be. In homage to ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’, this device is the cue for our hero to learn some home truths. Perry is hilarious as the 30-something misfit trying to navigate a course through 21st century teen-dom.

Is Anybody There? A touching vehicle for the never-failing star presence of Michael Caine who is exceptional as an elderly magician, at a loss since the death of his wife and forced to move to an old peoples’ home. The single saving grace is the young son of the over-worked but kindly owners, whose obsession with the possibility of life after death forms the basis of an unexpected bond between him and the grumpy old man. With wonderful comedy and a series of scene-stealing turns from the likes of Leslie Philips and Sylvia Syms this is a beautiful story, simply told.

Mark of an Angel Based on a true story this haunting film is dominated by spellbinding performances from two of French cinema’s greatest female leads. Elsa is divorced and battling for custody of her son. A brief sighting of a little girl is the beginning of Elsa’s obsessive mission to insinuate herself into the lives of the girl’s family, much to the growing unease of the other mother. The mounting tension is effortlessly achieved without recourse to cliché, and the script cleverly shifts our allegiances back and forth between the two women.

Last Chance Harvey This tremendous love story is graced by superlative performances from Hoffman and Thompson. The pair positively glow in their respective roles of rumpled-but-charming Yank, Harvey – whose unfulfilling career writing jingles is being eclipsed by younger colleagues – and on-the-shelf, bookish Kate – whose time is divided between her work and her demanding mother. A warm, witty and at times agonisingly poignant romantic comedy with enjoyably accomplished set-pieces that will have you laughing out loud and then reaching for the hankies.

Kisses Two foul-mouthed kids, Dylan and Kylie, run away from their abusive homes and spend a terrifying yet fantastical night on the streets of inner-city Dublin. Already picking up five awards in its native Ireland and in the States this charming, insightful and gritty drama features splendidly guileless performances from the two young unknown leads who grow to rely on each other for love and protection. Daly, who is writer, director and cinematographer, manages to find warmth and humour in the children’s tough situation. Listen out for lots of Bob Dylan on the soundtrack and watch for an un-credited performance from Stephen Rea.

New Town Killers Two bankers, Alistair and Jamie, who have the world at their feet get their kicks from playing a game of hunt-and-seek with people on the bottom rung of the social ladder. Their next target is Sean, a teenager who lives with his sister in a depressing scheme. She’s in debt, he’s going nowhere fast. Sean agrees to play for cash and the streets of Edinburgh are set for a deadly and twisted game of cat-and-mouse. This gripping feature from Fife-born Richard Jobson combines cutting social commentary with the overt style and pace of a video-game.

As Eric the postie’s life descends deeper into crisis, Eric, the philosophical football hero, steps from a bedroom-wall poster and begins dispensing his famed wisdom. Written by Loach’s regular screen collaborator and generously blessed with magical humour (see supporting roles from the likes of John Henshaw of the Post Office ads) this will, by rights, be the alternative box office hit of the summer.

Michael Mann (‘Heat’) directs Johnny Depp in the true story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger, whose charismatic persona and lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. A cast of Hollywood A-listers, a script by acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Ronan Bennett and direction by Mann, working in his trade-mark genre, make this electrifying crime-drama a sure winner.

Encounters At The End Of The World Full of visual marvels, hugely entertaining, irreverent, witty and fascinating, this study of the community of misfits and adventurers living at the very margins of conventional society in Antarctica is one of Herzog’s best. Far more than “just another film about penguins” (as Herzog himself is quick to point out) this is the kind of documentary that will succeed in recruiting many new fans to the non-fiction genre.

Gun Crazy One of the greatest cult movies of American film history and the very epitome of the B-film noir. This early variation on the Bonnie and Clyde theme was a major influence on Godard and the French New Wave - dazzling evidence that “all you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun”. The girl in this case is Laurie (Cummins), who works as a professional sharpshooter at a carnival, hooks up with Bart (Dall) and persuades him that they should become partners in crime.

“B-movies don’t get much more cult than this cracking black-and-white 1949 classic… a total must for pulp fiction fanatics.” Metro

Casablanca Runner-up in the local community vote for the first film to screen at the launch of the Hippodrome in April… but we don’t really need an excuse to show this multi-Oscar winning cinema classic featuring legendary dialogue and great performances all round – including, of course, Bogart and Bergman in the iconic roles they were born to play.

“One of the greatest movies of all time… If you’re part of the post-Spielberg generation wondering what all the fuss is about, then don’t wait any longer to find out. It could be the start of a beautiful friendship…” Matt Mueller, Total Film

Bronson A detached but visceral portrait of Michael Paterson (aka Charles Bronson) dubbed by the media “Britain’s most violent prisoner”. Tom Hardy (see ‘The Inheritance p14) is electric and formidable as the raging psychopath bent on making an art-form of his aggression in an extreme and brutal circus… one in which he plays the ring-master. With a jaw-dropping performance from the lead and an expressionistic, almost painterly visual flair this is a provocative film, definitely not for the faint-hearted but, quite literally, stunning.

“A cult film for sure but one that will live beyond all our lifetimes... artistically it is a complex and unforgettable masterpiece.” Paul Dale, The List

Spirit Of The Beehive On the anniversary of the beginning of the Spanish Civil War we present a profoundly beautiful story of two girls living in rural Spain in the aftermath of Franco’s victory. After watching the film ‘Frankenstein’, the pair are obsessed with the idea that the gentle monster exists amongst them. On discovering a wounded Republican soldier, young Ana’s imaginings appear materialised. An interesting companion piece to ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ this film is pervaded by the sorrow and devastating impact of the Civil War.

Wendy and Lucy Wendy is driving to Alaska, in the hope of a summer of lucrative work and the start of a new life with her dog, Lucy. When her car breaks down in Oregon, however, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart, and she confronts a series of increasingly dire economic decisions. In stark, luminous terms, ‘Wendy and Lucy’ addresses issues of sympathy and generosity at the edges of American life, revealing the limits and depths of people’s duty to each other in tough times.

Singing In The Rain Winning second place in the local community vote for the film to launch the Hippodrome, the immortal ‘Singing in the Rain’ is seen by many as the best Hollywood musical of all time. A great plot about the difficult transition from silents to ‘talkies’ is the backdrop for romance, comic genius, and wonderful musical numbers, especially the acrobatic ‘Make ‘em Laugh’, Kelly opposite Charisse in ‘Broadway Ballet’ (what legs!), and of course the famous and sublime title song. “Come on with the rain, I’ve a smile on my face…”

This Sporting Life Richard Harris plays Frank, a miner lodging with the widowed Mrs Hammond, whose competitive nature and powerful physique makes him a perfect contender for the local rugby team. Encouraged by the corrupting influence of old man Johnson (Hartnell), he joins the team seeking a share of the glory. A masterpiece of the British New Wave film movement in which rugby league football serves as a metaphor for the grind of life in a working-class northern English town.

Spend Sundays with Bond in Bo’nessOn consecutive Sundays in June the Hippodrome is proud to present a season of classic James Bond films, digitally restored and screening in celebration of the centenary of producer Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli. Make Sunday a Bo’ness Bond-day and combine your viewing with a visit to the Bo’ness Motor Museum, featuring memorabilia and cars from the films, the Double “O” bar and Miss Moneypenny’s Diner.

Dr No Sean Connery was cast in the lead role and the film featured the usual Broccoli touch of exotic locations: this time Jamaica and surrounding waters, from which a bikini-clad Ursula Andress memorably emerged. A fast-paced colourful romp, the film became an enormous hit worldwide.

From Russia With Love Broccoli considered this as one of the best Fleming stories. Connery once again excelled and was well supported by a great cast including Robert Shaw, wonderfully menacing as a brutal killer; and Lotte Lenya as the Russian agent with the famous poison-tipped knife device in her shoe. The film also features many distinctive Bond motifs for the first time and its huge success firmly established the 007 films as a cultural phenomenon.

The press went into overdrive speculating on Connery’s successor; while the producers chose good-looking Australian actor George Lazenby after successful screen tests. Avengers superstar Diana Rigg was brought in as an added lure and the resulting action-packed film ensured that the franchise would continue.

C Cuppa screenings Café opens at 10:30 for tea/coffee and cake. Screening starts at 11:00. Ticket price £4.75 includes refreshments. £2.50 for film only.

T Tots Tuesdays start at 11:00. Bring your baby free (up to 18 months) and enjoy the film without worrying about any noise your wee one may make. All tickets £3.75.

J Jeely Jars start at 11:00. All tickets £2.00. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. In the Hippodrome’s heyday youngsters could get their cinema ticket in exchange for a jeely jar. We have named our Saturday morning screenings of well-loved family films and kids’ classics in honour of this tradition. Once a season we’ll give you the chance to revive the custom (see below).

Look out for the Jeely Jar Special** when you can bring a clean jeely jar with matching lid and get two tickets for the price of one. The jars will be re-used for jam-making in the Georgian Kitchen at Callendar House. But please note: don’t bring a jar every week, we can’t make that much jam!
