sesWhere to begin? We have rolled in to autumn with so many

outstanding recent film releases to choose from that it’s a challenge to decide what to flag up first. Perhaps one of my personal favourites is as good a place as any… I really urge you to see ‘Heartbreaker’, the French rom-com that has been stealing hearts wherever it is screened. I realise that sub-titles aren’t everyone’s 'tasse de thé' but this film is so likeable that you’ll honestly barely notice them. Another French film that might win any straggling doubters over to foreign films is ‘The Illusionist’. The trailer really doesn’t do justice to this lovely and magical film. Part of the magic is due to the unexpected delight of seeing Edinburgh, rendered in hand-drawn animation and up on the big screen, and there’s something particularly poignant about seeing the rich red velvet curtains at the Hippodrome mirrored in the red theatre curtains heralding The Illusionist’s act within the film.

We’re always glad to see Scotland on the big screen and a veritable industry seems to have grown up around the tourism potential of highland locations featuring in the Harry Potter films, the latest chapter of which will be screening at the Hippodrome at the end of November. Sadly we will have to wait until December for the Edinburgh story ‘Burke and Hare’… but in my book it’s definitely worth waiting a couple of weeks to see a film at the wonderful Hippodrome. Even closer to home we are delighted to be showing two shorts made by local young people: ‘Brainwashed’ by Big Screen Bo’ness and ‘That’s Life’ by Caroline Orr. Both shorts have a distinctly creepy feel and are screening as a Halloween double-bill with 'Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein'.

Our headline special event this season is also a bit on the spooky side… The Southwell Collective makes a welcome return to the Hippodrome with a live musical performance to a silent film version of the classic story by Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ in a double-bill with ‘Ghosts Before Breakfast’. The Southwell Collective’s latest show has been met with rave

reviews “Absolutely beautiful. Absorbing and enchanting” etc etc and we are delighted that they will conclude their Scottish tour with a date at the Hippodrome with what promises to be another popular and impressive silent film and music event. And there is more! We are very excited to announce that, in March 2011 – for the Hippodrome’s 99th anniversary – we will present a festival of silent film with live music accompaniment. Scotland’s first festival of silent film (supported by Regional Screen Scotland) will showcase three days of features and shorts around the theme of ‘Comedy’ with live music, special guests, workshops, talks and events. More details will be announced soon so, if you haven’t done so already, join our free mailing list to be the first to hear the latest updates (see page 27 for details).

The autumn season continues with two great little films blessed with sensational soundtracks, about two very different underground youth music scenes: ‘SoulBoy’ (northern soul) and ‘The Runaways’ (rock from the band founded by Joan Jett and Cherie Currie). There is also an informal strand of films based on memoirs – ‘The Kid’ (crime writer Kevin Lewis), ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ (journalist Elizabeth Gilbert) and ‘Mr Nice’ (label-defying Howard Marks).

Finally there’s just room to squeeze in a mention of The Greatest Time Travel Movie of All TIME… ‘Back to the Future’ of course! You can theme your Hippodrome visits by going along to see another Zemeckis’ triumph ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ (also starring Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom by the way). But remember, wearing your orange body warmer will only get you in free to ‘Back to the Future’ (see page 17 for details). Oh and don’t forget your clean jam jar and lid for this season’s Jeely Jar Special: ‘Shorts for Wee Ones’ on 13th November.

The Rebound Satisfying, smarter than average rom-com with Zeta-Jones as a recently separated single mum – Sandy – who takes up with Aram, a man fifteen years her junior as ‘rebound therapy’ prescribed by her friend. The familiar arc of romantic movies (meet – fall in love – obstacle – separate – pine – happy end) is tweaked just enough, and played with just the right balance of straight-up and funny that the result is fresh, sweet and likeable entertainment. Look out for the hilarious situation piece involving a disastrous evening for fastidious Sandy and her less hygiene conscious date.

The Killer Inside Me Electrifying psychological study featuring an exceptional performance from Casey Affleck and stand-out cinematography. Faithfully based on the1952 pulp novel by Jim Thompson, this is the story of a Hicksville sheriff, Lou Ford: a psychopath with a respectable public face, and of the unfortunate women in his thrall. The brutal and graphic beatings meted out on Lou’s victims is a world away from the comic-book style violence of so many Hollywood films. Hugely uncomfortable to watch but essential viewing if you want to make up your own mind about the controversy that has stormed around this film.

Dir. Michael Winterbottom / US / 2010 / 1h 49mWith: Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Bill Pullman

The Karate Kid Worthwhile remake of the original 1984 hit with Jaden Smith (son of Will) as the Kid and martial arts mega-star Jackie Chan as the master. The action is relocated from California to China where new boy in town – Dre – attracts the attention of his pretty class-mate and the animosity of the school bully. Maintenance man Mr Han is on hand to teach Dre that the maturity and calm practiced in the noble art of Kung-Fu will always overcome punches and low-minded aggression. The obvious title of ‘The Kung-Fu Kid’ was apparently rejected on the grounds it would be associated with ‘Kung-Fu Panda’ (screening at the Hippodrome on 23rd October).

Dir. Harald Zwart / US/China / 2010 / 2h 19mWith: Jackie Chan, Jaden Smith, Taraji P.Henson

SoulBoy (cert tbc)

Finally: a worthy successor to ‘Billy Elliott’! The (inexplicably) untold story of Northern Soul seen through the eyes of Joe who discovers dance, luurve, and the thrilling underground music that he stumbles upon when trying to impress gorgeous northern soul aficionado, Jane. Convincingly set against a 70s backdrop and the now legendary, then burgeoning, Wigan Casino, this is an infectious coming-of-age drama that is elevated thanks to a knock-out soundtrack, and the winning performance of Scottish actor Martin Compston (‘Sweet Sixteen’) as Joe, who matures from gauche teenager to worldly-wise young man.

Dir. Shimmy Marcus / UK / 2010 / 1h22mWith: Martin Compston, Felicity Jones, Alfie Allen, Hannah Crighton

Splice A husband and wife team of genetic scientists (who clearly never learned anything from the mess that Dr Frankenstein got himself in to) are driven by greedy financiers and their own blind ambition to create a new life-form – an exotic hyrbrid of woman and bird/lizard/fish. Keeping their creation a secret the tensions multiply as the half-human creature, Dren, morphs into a beautiful woman, alluring to her pseudo parents and dangerous in equal measure. Demented, strange and gripping, with a nod to Cronenberg, Hammer Horror and every elevated B-movie in-between.

Skeletons “Simple, this job: stick to the rules, tell them everything, leave and never come back...” In this inventive and quietly funny lo-fi gem, Davis and Bennett are a mismatched pair of travelling salesmen in the business of cleaning out skeletons from closets. Together they travel the country, wandering in and out of people's lives, performing 'the Procedure' with a Heath-Robinson kit bag of equipment. But things begin to unravel when Bennett, a stickler for keeping to the rules, discovers Davis has been illegally re-living past memories ('glow-chasing')... Endearing and definitely worth a look for fine performances, bags of charm and the surreal world it creates in the midst of the English countryside.

Heartbreaker This smart romantic comedy follows the exploits of Alex, his sister and her husband - a good-looking trio who have made a successful, if unorthodox business out of breaking up romances for a fee. Against a gorgeous Monte Carlo back-drop the band of miscreants set about mission impossible: halting the nuptials of beautiful Juliette as she prepares to wed her handsome fiancé (Andrew Lincoln – ‘Love Actually’). Frothy comedy, great set pieces, fabulous scenery (shot by veteran cinematographer Thierry Arbogast - ‘Leon’, ‘Nikita’), and plenty of romance make this a first-class delight.

Black Death The British director, Christopher Smith, who already has several cracking horror films under his belt, gives us another exemplary example of the genre. This time the action is set in the middle ages at the time of the first outbreak of bubonic plague, when a young monk is tasked with leading a warrior knight (Bean) to discover the truth behind reports of people being brought back to life by an alluring necromancer. A savvy and creepy cult-film-in-the-making, recalling the classic British horror ‘Witchfinder General’, and dealing in weighty themes, from fundamentalism and religious intolerance to Life and Death.

Knight and Day Star power dream-team pairing of Cruise and Diaz (re-united again for the first time since ‘Vanilla Sky’) as a disarmingly suave secret agent and mousy girl-next-door, thrown into each other’s company and the explosive intrigues of a deadly mission. The leads and villainous co-stars (led by Peter Sarsgaard – ‘An Education’) are clearly having lots of fun with the stunts and script, and the award-winning director of ‘Walk the Line’ and ‘Copland’ ensures the tone remains firmly tongue-in-cheek in this whirlwind, romantic action thriller.

The Secret in Their Eyes Winner of this year’s best Foreign Language film Oscar and over 30 other international awards this is a slick, tense and engrossing thriller about a former detective fighting a losing battle to leave his past behind. Retired operative Benjamín Espósito is writing a novel, using a closed, rape and murder case as source material. Despite a successful conviction, Benjamín remains convinced of another man’s guilt. With the dual motive of researching his novel and seeking closure, Benjamin revisits all the key players in the case, including former colleague Irene: object of his unspoken affection. Great plot, great acting, great ending… a must-see in anyone’s book.

The Girl Who Played With Fire Second instalment of the hugely successful film adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s ‘Millennium Trilogy’ crime novels, again starring Naomi Rapace as live-wire computer hacker Lisbeth and Michael Nykvist as journalist Mikael. Whilst investigating a sex-trafficking ring, Lisbeth is accused of three murders, and forced to go on the run while Mikael works to clear her name. The pair use all their skills and ingenuity to bring the guilty to justice – exposing a pan-European ring of corruption and unearthing some secrets from Lisbeth’s own disturbed past. A dark thriller which hints at the legacy of the Cold War and a State’s complicity in distant atrocities – hints which serve to emphasise the overall grimy, malevolent tone.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World A rom-com with a difference, as we would expect from the mould-breaking director of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’. Slacker twenty-something Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera – ‘Juno’, ‘Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist’) falls for the electric-blue-haired Ramona. But the course to true love involves a series of tasks in which Scott must defeat her seven evil exes. This boy meets girl package is a head-rush, mash-up of live action, special effects, animation, comic book, video games and music. Dazzling, energetic and hugely enjoyable. Wright delivers once again.

The Illusionist The titular Illusionist is one of a dying breed of music hall entertainers forced to accept gigs in fringe theatres, at garden parties and in increasingly obscure venues. Whilst performing in the Inner Hebrides, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl who, awestruck by his performance, decides to follow him to Edinburgh… and change his life forever. Award-winning Chomet’s (‘Belleville Rendezvous’) second feature is a beautiful, charming animation born out of an unrealised film script by Jacques Tati’s, and finally brought to life at his Scottish animation studio by Chomet, at the request of the Tati family. Made in hand-drawn 2D at Chomet’s insistence, in homage to the vintage Disney films ‘101 Dalmations’ and ‘The Aristocats’ he so admires. The result is a lovely tale about loss and growing-up, starring the beautiful Edinburgh city-scape.

Determined to mend the girl’s distant friendship with her father, Tink turns away her rescuers in order to help her new human friend, risking her own safety and the future of fairy-kind. A charming animated family film for the holidays with Mae Whitman (‘Scott Pilgrim…’) as the voice of everyone’s favourite fairy and Lucy Liu (‘Kung Fu Panda’) as her fairy ally.

The Runaways 1975 California and a teenage girl band is spotted by unscrupulous Svengali-figure Kim Fowley (Shannon) who engineers their meteoric journey from classroom to rock stadium in just a couple of years. Dakota Fanning (‘Coraline’) and Kristen Stewart (‘Twilight’) play the founder members: Cherie Currie and Joan Jett – two fierce, talented girls who shook the LA music scene and changed the rules of rock, making way for all the credible girl bands that came in their wake. Music promo director Sigismondi perfectly and affectionately captures the teenage kicks and creative conflicts puncturing the careers of the girls who were picked up and dropped by the whirlwind of fame.

Mother At once nail-bitingly tense and brimming with humanity, Korean director Bong's terrific film comes fresh from sweeping the Asian Film Awards with a hat-trick of Best Film, Best Script and Best Actress. This taut, unsentimental, ‘Hitchcockian’ dissection of a mother defending her son at all costs remains consistently unpredictable right up to its supremely satisfying climax. When a mother discovers her 27 year old son has been arrested for the murder of a young girl, she obsessively sets out to track down the real killer and prove her son's innocence at all costs.

Bluebeard The often re-interpreted Charles Perrault fable of the monstrous nobleman with scary secrets in his dungeon is brought lovingly to life in Breillat’s costume drama, set in once-upon-a-time France, with a parallel 1950s narrative in which two little girls frighten each other deliciously as they read the original dark tale to each other. Like the best fairy-tales the story has real bite and the chaste, storybook compositions form a contradictory and thought-provoking backdrop to the feminist interpretation of spirited girls thrilling to the illicit.

Tamara Drewe The director of ‘The Queen’ and ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ cements his track record of excellent social satire with this return to the big screen – an enjoyably saucy adaptation of Posy Simmonds graphic novel (itself based on Thomas Hardy’s ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’) about a successful, sultry young newspaper columnist who returns, on the occasion of an annual writers’ retreat, to her dull home village to sell her deceased mother’s property. Her presence succeeds in turning the heads of three very different menfolk, and Ms Drewe (Bond girl Gemma Arterton) leaves an invidious trail of destruction.

The Kid (cert tbc)

A heart-wrenching screen adaptation of British crime writer, Kevin Lewis’s, best-selling memoir – his autobiographical account of a brutal upbringing at the hands of a monstrous mother and his subsequent, hard-won salvation. Rupert Friend (‘The Young Victoria’) plays the older, damaged Kevin, whilst McElhone, cast against type, gives a terrifying, performance as the savage Mrs Lewis. The traumatic tale of triumph over adversity is leavened by the occasional kindnesses of secondary characters including Ioan Gruffudd as a concerned teacher and Bernard Hill as Kevin’s care-worker.

City Island Andy Garcia is perfectly cast as the suburban family man who works as a prison guard by day but secretly nurtures his unfulfilled ambitions at extra-mural acting classes, where he channels his inner Brando in an attempt to impress casting agents. His troublesome Italian-American family include long-suffering wife (Margulies), a teenage son with a penchant for XXLarge women, a daughter working strip clubs to pay college fees, and a young probationer who also happens to be his illegitimate son. Sharing the breezy, indie-comedy feel of ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, the family tensions erupt in a melodramatic but heart-warming finale.

Eat, Pray, Love Ryan Murphy, creator of TV phenomenon ‘Glee’, directs this uplifting drama based on the best-selling, true-life memoir of Elizabeth Gilbert and starring Julia Roberts as the happily-married woman who takes stock of her life and determines to undertake a life-changing journey in her pursuit of fulfilment, food and romance. The very definition of a Hollywood ‘woman’s picture’. Roberts ‘everygirl’ appeal is a perfect fit for this film which sees her combine her rom-com persona with that of crusading adventurer (cf. ‘Pelican Brief’ or ‘Erin Brockovich’).

Winter’s Bone This deeply atmospheric award-winning drama follows 17-year-old Ree’s desperate quest to track down her bail-skipping father and save the family home from the bailiffs. Set in the desolate but stunningly photographed Ozark mountains of backwoods America, the film casts a powerful spell, thanks to mesmerising cinematography (by Scottish-born Micahel McDonaough) and an outstanding performance from Lawrence as the unflinching girl, battling to protect her siblings and win the respect of her hardened relatives.

Mr Nice Biopic of the infamous Oxford-graduate turned drug-runner: Howard Marks, whose colourful memoir topped the best-seller lists and inspired his on-going tour of sell-out live shows. During the 80s, Marks had 43 aliases and 25 companies trading as fronts for his illicit career… he even found time for a side-line in espionage for the CIA and MI6. This fantastical story is brought vividly to life by a great cast including a full-throttle Thewlis as an IRA operative and Ifans, superb as the unorthodox Marks, an impersonation perhaps aided by the actor’s real-life friendship with the man himself.

Made in Dagenham ‘Calendar Girls’ director Nigel Cole brings to the screen a dramatisation of the 1968 strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant, where female workers walked out in protest against unequal pay and sexual discrimination. With humour, common sense and courage, and led by the fast-talking, no-nonsense Rita (Hawkins), the band of women take on their corporate paymasters, an increasingly belligerent local community, and finally the government itself. With the upbeat tone of that earlier British industrial unrest movie: ‘Brassed Off!’ this enjoyable drama boasts a fabulous supporting cast including Bob Hoskins, Rupert Graves, John Sessions and Geraldine James.

Mary and Max (cert tbc) (screening tbc, see below)

Hilarious and heart-rending by turns this unique animation (using the stop-motion techniques familiar to us from the beloved exploits of Wallace and Gromit) is an unforgettable portrait of a supremely unlikely friendship. Following the pen-pal relationship forged between Mary Dinkle, an Australian school girl, and Max Horowitz, a solitary, overweight New Yorker with Asperger’s syndrome, the film is blessed with utterly engaging characters, a brilliant voice-cast, dazzlingly skilled animation and a narrative that shifts effortlessly from laugh-out-loud to desperately touching, without ever becoming saccharine. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (cert tbc)

Part one of the final instalment of the Harry Potter stories (corresponding to the first part of book number seven in JK Rowling’s global publishing phenomenon) is directed by David Yates, who gave us the successful incarnations of book five and six, and stars the regular rosta of A-listers including Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, and Robbie Coltrane… Voldemort's power is growing stronger. He now has control over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to finish Dumbledore's work and find the rest of the Horcruxes to defeat the Dark Lord. But the challenges facing them are the most fearsome yet.

The Kids Are All Right Nic and Jules – Academy Award nominees Annette Bening (‘American Beauty’) and Julianne Moore (‘Hannibal’, ‘The Big Lebowski’) – are married and share a cosy suburban home with their teenage children: Joni and Laser. Their household is thrown into disarray when the teens undertake to track down their “bio-dad”, the easy-going Paul (Ruffalo, ‘The Brothers Bloom’) whose life-style and world-view prove disruptive and compelling in equal measure. The most talked-about movie at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, this award-winning film combines comedic surprise with poignant emotional truth in a vibrant, and richly drawn portrait of a modern family.

The Fall of the House of Usher: The Southwell CollectiveThe Southwell Collective make a welcome return to the Hippodrome after their near sell-out performance last year.

The four strong band of musicians perform live their specially composed scores (for oboe, cor anglais, guitar, bass clarinet, bass recorder and electronic soundscape) to two classic silent films. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ – Edgar Allan Poe’s gripping horror classic of paranoia and suspense as filmed in this visually stunning, suspenseful and surreal masterpiece by one of cinema’s leading avant-garde visionaries, Jean Epstein. Screened with ‘Ghosts Before Breakfast’ (dir.Hans Richter, 1928), a short in which ordinary objects behave in unusual, unexpected ways. The new score, composed by Michael McCartney for The Southwell Collective, aspires to achieve the same effect, featuring music which sounds somewhat familiar, yet subtly unpredictable.

Blow-up + talk

Alan Davie at 90: ‘Antonioni’s Blow-up and Alan Davie’Alan Davie was born in Grangemouth in 1920 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art in the late 1930s. One of Scotland’s most prolific living artists, he is consistently named as one of the most important British painters of the post-war decades. To celebrate Davie’s life and art in the month of his 90th birthday, the Hippodrome presents a screening of ‘Blow-up’ – Antonioni’s swinging-sixties thriller which features a work by Davie – preceded by a talk presented by Bill Hare, lecturer at the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art. This screening is part of the supporting events programme for the 5* reviewed exhibition of recent works by Alan Davie at the Park Gallery, Callendar House, Falkirk which runs until 16th October (house and gallery admission: free).

Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff Featuring narration from Martin Scorsese and unique interviews with the world's greatest actors, directors and technicians, ‘Cameraman’ illuminates the work of Jack Cardiff whose exceptional career is interwoven with the history of cinema. In this humorous, intimate and fascinating insight into Cardiff’s work, the master himself explains how he helped elevate cinematography to an art form with his groundbreaking vision and technical wizardry in films like ‘The Red Shoes’, ‘The African Queen’ and many others. Cardiff relates tales of working with Hollywood's greatest icons including Monroe, Hepburn, Bogart, Douglas and Loren.

Rashomon The Hippodrome is proud to present a new digital restoration of this genuine masterpiece, to mark the centenary of the birth of revered Japanese director, Akira Kurosawa. A nobleman and his wife are set upon by a bandit who kills the man and rapes the woman – or so it seems. But the story becomes less clear-cut when the narrative is presented from four different angles – one version from each of the protagonists plus a witness. Who can be believed – if anyone? An unmissable chance to see a master-class in editing, style and performance.

Dir. Akira Kurosawa / Japan / 1951 / 1h 28m / b&w / Japanese with English sub-titlesWith: Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyo, Masayuki Mori

The Leopard “There are films so richly realised you can live in them – ‘The Leopard’ is one such, and this new digital restoration, recently premiered in Cannes, makes the experience yet more intense” (Richard Dyer). Visconti’s epic tale of the declining fortunes of a Sicilian aristocrat, set against the momentous historical backdrop of Italian unification and the rise of the bourgeoisie, centres around a magisterial performance from Burt Lancaster in his most iconic role. Stately cinematography and gorgeous costumes render a powerful sense of place and the rapturous score and celebrated final ballroom scene cast a mesmeric and lingering spell.

Oh! What a Lovely War We mark Armistice Day with this screening of Richard Attenborough’s (‘Ghandi’, ‘Cry Freedom’) directorial debut, exposing the follies of war. Focussing on the Smith family who go off to fight in WWI, the film is packed with songs and famous faces representing the cream of British acting talent. Singling out just Olivier for an acting accolade may now be considered remiss but the film also picked up awards for best film, editing, direction, soundtrack, costume and cinematography. Widely praised on release, the relative rarity of public screenings belies the film’s classic status.

Back to the Future This year marks the 25th anniversary of the release of ‘Back to the Future’ and a welcome re-issue of this brilliant family adventure. For anyone who hasn’t seen it the plot goes like this: In 1985, Doc Brown invents time travel and transports his young friend, Marty McFly back to 1955 where he accidentally prevents his parents from meeting, and puts his own existence at stake… oh, and invents rock ‘n’ roll. Think skateboards, DeLoreans and Huey Lewis… To celebrate the 25th anniversary, anyone coming to a Hippodrome screening wearing an orange body-warmer, as modelled by Michael J. Fox in the film, will get in free of charge. 80s-tastic!
