hospice southland living every moment
The inaugural hoamz Vintner’s Lunch was held by Hospice Southland on Sunday, 11 November at the Hideaway in Lochiel.
260 guests enjoyed a fabulous five course lunch designed by one of Southland’s best chefs, Mat Jackson, who superbly showcased the best of Southland’s cuisine. Guests tasted Blue Cod ceviche, Sanford Stewart Island salmon, Faregame venison, Alliance Group lamb rack cutlet and a lemon and mint posset.
One of New Zealand’s most recognizable winemakers, Allan Scott of Allan Scott Family Winemakers, spoke about his experience in the wine industry in New Zealand and how the day’s menu celebrated his wine.
MC John Prendergast entertained guests throughout the day and auctioneer Brendan Quill from hoamz amped up the crowd with a lively auction of some fantastic items.
Hospice Southland Promotions Officer, Melanie Luke was overwhelmed by the
response from sponsors and local businesses who donated auction items and prizes for the event.
“The amazing response from sponsors, supporters and guests prior to and during the event raised a staggering $35,000 for Hospice Southland. It was a fantastic afternoon and we have received nothing but positive feedback. The Vintner’s Lunch has certainly set the tone for future events.”
A special mention must also go to our organizing committee who worked on the event for much of the year. Thank you for giving so generously of your time and for your unwavering enthusiasm for this event.
Thank you to our major sponsors and especially the guests on the day, your attendance at this event and your willingness to contribute certainly made it a day to remember!

The hoamz Vintner’s Lunch raises $35,000
Hospice is a place which re-affirms your faith in the goodness of humankind. It inspires through the many journeys of courage and character that unfold every day, even on those seemingly ordinary and ‘every day’ days. It has been my privilege over the last 10 years to have experienced those acts of kindness and to share in some of those journeys, mainly of the staffs’ and occasionally with the patients, their families and friends.
The role of the Chief Executive is a back room role in many respects and the focus therefore is on making a difference for patients and families through the facilitation and support of others. When I finish with Hospice Southland it will be with a great sense of accomplishment and enrichment. Often I feel that I have received back far more than I have given, and I am grateful for that experience and opportunity.
At a time like this knowing what to say is difficult and being able to acknowledge every single person individually for their support in so many ways, is impossible. So I guess it does come back to those two small words that can only be expressed in a heartfelt way – thank you.
Nicki Kitson
Nicki’s farewell
There are many generous people and organisations within our community who have supported us in the last 20 years. We would love to name you all but space does not allow.
Please accept our thanks for your contribution to Hospice Southland.
Milestones 2003 to 2012
This year we have been sharing with you some of the many milestones we have had in the last 20 years.
In this issue we look at 2003 to the present day.
The ANZ Wombledon Lawn Tennis
tournament started in 2004 and raised
almost $34,000 in four years.
The first Hospice Shop was opened in
Invercargill in 2008
In 2007 Sean Bellew and Tom Dowling came up with a great idea… take a house, renovate it and sell it on with proceeds donated to Hospice. They could have never imagined “Southland’s greatest community project”. Hundreds of businesses and volunteers gave up their time, skills and materials for the cause. Louis Crimp bought the Russel Street home for $1,026,000, which resulted in $790,000 donated to Hospice.
The team at House of Travel Lakers won the
national Hospice Embrace award in
2008 for their service to Hospice Southland.
Our wonderful Bereavement Support
volunteer, Sally MacDonald from Te Anau received The
Queen’s Service Medal in 2011 in recognition of her services to the
community.
Our second Hospice Shop was officially
opened in Gore by His Worship the Major Tracy Hicks in 2011.
Our shops are manned by volunteers and rely
solely on donations from the community.
Olympic cyclist Eddie Dawkins and his
partner O’Leah Black won the first Rocking with the Stars event which raised almost $20,000 for Hospice and the Invercargill Rock ‘n’ Roll Club
The Trustees appointed our first
Patron, Mr Jack Faul. Jack is an ex-board
member and Hospice supporter to the core!
Grant improves patient comfort
Kevin Booth from Guardian Trust presented Nursing Director Kate Mackintosh and Chief Executive Officer Nicki Kitson with a grant from the W Duncan Bickley Trust toward the purchase of a new HiLo Bed and Mattress. $3,000 had been donated to this project by the Bowls Southland Charity Pairs Committee last year. The Bed and Mattress takes advantage of the latest technology for improved patient comfort in the Inpatient Unit.
Sean Bellew, Trustee of the ILT Foundation and Invercargill Licensing Trust presented Nursing Director Kate Mackintosh and Medical Director Christian Robold with the very generous cheque following the approval of a grant for $80,000. The increased grant recognises the pressure growing patient numbers have placed on the provision of hospice services in the last five years.
ILT Foundation and ILT continue their support
Our Promotions Officer Melanie Luke is going on maternity leave.
Renée Goldup has been appointed and starts
mid-November. Please contact her for any fundraising enquires.

Our thanks to... Give It Up for Hospice During September and October our Hospice Shops participated in the Give It Up for Hospice campaign. We were overwhelmed by the response from our community who donated clothes, shoes and accessories to their local Postie store. Southland businesses also got involved and our shops were overflowing with black bags of gener-osity. Many people took ‘give it up’ to mean give it all up and we are so grateful for the general increase in donations over this time. Thank you to Postie and all those who supported this years campaign.
