NHS problems and how they affect youNot a day passes without some ‘bad’ news in the media about the ‘dire’ state of the NHS. How are you faring under the care of the Holt Medical Practice and healthcare generally in this part of North Norfolk? There is only one answer and that is very well!The Holt Area Patient Participation Group (HAPPG) is proud to have been able to play its part in supporting and influencing the surgery in improvements and communication during 2016. Our members gave their time to help introduce the new electronic sign in system guiding patients on how to use it thus easing the queues at the reception desk. We played an important role in highlighting the cost of everyday medicines to the NHS with our ‘Bath’ initiative graphically highlighting the cost to the great surprise of many patients. The baths then went on tour to many other surgeries in North Norfolk, South Norfolk and I believe they are now in Suffolk. The net benefit to the HMP is a drop in medicines cost due to you, the patients, only ordering what you need.We helped to dispel the rumor that blood tests were only available at Cromer Hospital and that patients had a choice, an appointment at HMP or a walk-in visit at Cromer. We highlighted the fact that in

order to discuss a close relative’s medical condition with the practice, a document signed by both parties was necessary. We encouraged patients to sign up for online contact with the surgery, not just for repeat medications but also to book appointments with the GP of your choice at a time to suit you at any of our three practices. In addition online access allows access to your previous appointments, the notes made, and a historical record of any blood tests you might have had.We appreciate that the N&N is some distance away but through NHS choices, many procedures are available at Cromer Hospital, just ask. We need to constructively work with the surgery to investigate ambulance services, mental health issues and social care. We have new Committee members and look forward to working together as your voice in the NHS locally. Dear Readers,Flooding - Friday 13 January 2017: As far as I know there were no disasters along the coastal parishes of our division and I hope that is so. However all our coastal parishes were on a flood warning, and indeed waited anxiously to see if this would be upgraded to a severe warning with the ultimate threat of evacuation. I have yet to hear if anyone was moved from their homes as a precaution. As the joint co-ordinator for the Wells flood plan, I have received praise for our flood wardens and as county councillor, I would like to say a big thank you to all the flood wardens along the coast. The role flood wardens play allows the blue light services to be used where there are no wardens and/or greater risks. Volunteers receive no pay but a bright yellow jacket and the knowledge they are helping their community regarding what remains the greatest risk to Norfolk - coastal flooding.Road Gritting: When freezing temperatures are predicted Norfolk County Council officers are on duty ensuring the gritting teams go out on time, and repeatedly if required. The County Council currently has around 13,000 tonnes of salt stocked in the county and is replenished throughout the winter. More than a third of Norfolk’s roads, totalling over 2,000 miles, are on the council’s 49 regular gritting routes, including all A and B-class roads and some C-class roads, and each route takes around three hours for a gritter lorry to treat. The A11, A47 and A12 are gritted by Highways England. You can check which roads are on the council’s gritting routes by looking at the map at www.norfolk.gov.uk/gritting. On the same map you can find the locations of the more than 1,800 grit bins in the county that are filled by the County Council and which people can use on public pavements, cycle paths and roads. Now, whilst over 2,000 miles are on the 49 gritting routes, I realise there will be readers whose road is not gritted. Not that it is of any comfort but my road is not gritted and I do appreciate the concerns. Here is where your town or parish council comes into play. You can talk to your council and ask if the road you have in mind could be put forward to NCC with a request to have it included on the gritting route. This may not be successful and an alternative is to discuss the possibility of having a grit bin in the vicinity of the road. Broadband: I wrote a longer piece previously regarding broadband but thought to provide a short note regarding complaints made that Openreach excludes other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from offering fibre broadband for several weeks after BT has had the opportunity. I have been informed that Ofcom regulates Openreach tightly on this matter. When a fibre cabinet becomes available the commissioning process means Openreach release the cabinet to all ISPs including BT ISPs at the same time. An ISP would definitely raise a complaint with Ofcom if it believed BT were not treating all ISPs in the same way. What differs is that different ISP internal processes means they all take different amounts of time to start offering services once a cabinet is live.Mobile ‘Phone Coverage: Because Wells division is particularly rural, covering some 35 parishes and hamlets, and because I travel all around all these places, I am acutely aware of the problems with

mobile ‘phone coverage. As Chair of the Broadband, Mobile Phone and Digital Working Group I, along with fellow councillors, am also aware that the problem even exists in some of our towns. I hope the following update is useful: I am in regular contact with Mobile UK, which represents mobile operators, putting across our concerns and seeking information as to developments. Additionally the group has met twice with representatives from the four main mobile network operators (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). We already knew that mobile operators have an agreement with government to achieve 90% geographic voice coverage across the country by the end of 2017. We have now been assured that operators are on track to meet this commitment, which should also result in an increase in 4G data coverage. In turn, the government is reviewing the Electronic Communications code to help operators deploy new infrastructure - particularly important in rural areas. (And please remember that at present infrastructure means masts.)The government will review the coverage situation once the 90% coverage target has been achieved and the new Emergency Services Network (ESN) has been deployed. (The ESN is the new communications system which will be used by the Police, Fire & Rescue, the Ambulance Service and other public safety users. Where public money is used to subsidise ESN expansion in rural areas the infrastructure will be made available to all mobile operators.) Network operators are working together to share sites and improve infrastructure. However, they are still commercially independent so the operators will not publically share future coverage plans. However, whilst not a universal solution, you can use a coverage checker to determine the best network for the places where you will be mainly using your mobile phone. Most mobile phone operators have a coverage checker available on their own website but there is also a coverage checker available on the OFCOM website. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-telecoms-and-internet/advice-for-consumers/advice/mobile-coverage-checkerAnd whilst, as you will have read, the situation is improving and will continue to do so, concern remains. Therefore, early in 2017 we will be writing to the Minister responsible for Culture, Media and Sport requesting intervention regarding Norfolk’s access to mobile ‘phone networks.Dance Workshops at Wells Community Hospital: We members of Wells Dementia Friendly Committee are delighted to have persuaded Creative Arts East to bring the Green Candle Dance Company to Wells Community Hospital (Mill Road). The programme is called ‘Improving Wellbeing through the Arts’. FROM THE CONSULTING ROOMSPerfectionism And Mental Health

About 2 in 5 people are thought to be a Perfectionist (Flett, Hewitt, Heisel, 2014). Moreover, many see Perfectionism as something positive! However, this is a misconception. People with perfectionism set standards that are so high that either these cannot be met or only with difficulty. Perfectionists tend to believe that making a mistake means they are ‘a failure’ or ‘bad person’ for disappointing others. Thinking like this makes it very frightening for them to make mistakes. Examples of perfectionistic thinking include: Black-and-white thinking (If I need help from others, then I am weak); Catastrophic thinking (If I make a mistake I won’t be able to survive the humiliation) and Should-statements (I should never come across as nervous or anxious). Perfectionism can be devastatingly destructive leading to crippling anxiety, depression, drug addiction, increased suicide risk (e.g Hewitt and Flett, 2002) and physical illnesses including heart disease (Flett, 2012).In many cases, perfectionism is driven by an internal, often irrational, pressure to be perfect at all times. The inability to meet these self-imposed high demands often results in the individual having very little self-esteem. The question is however, what is driving perfectionist behaviour? What lies beneath perfectionist personalities?Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a recognised effective treatment for mental health problems including anxiety disorders, depression, low self-esteem, stress and others. Mindfulness have proven effective for perfectionism (e.g. Williams, 2008; Bertin, 2015). In my clinical practice I use CBT, Mindfulness, considerations to physical (e.g. exercise and diet) and mental health relations and elicitation of individual strengths in order to maximise individuals goals without negative effects on personal well being and growth. ‘Christmas was wonderful on our cruise, and Fred Olsen really went the extra mile to make it extra special. The ship caters mainly for UK passengers, I believe about 98% were British on our cruise, and this meant that the majority of passengers celebrated the traditional Christmas that we all know and love.

On Christmas Eve the crew put on a wonderful Christmas show, followed by a Christmas carol sing-a-long concert, midnight mass for those who wished to attend, and finally Sherry and mince pies at 1230pm ..and they were homemade, mouth-watering and

warm mince pies at that!

Christmas Day was very festive too as you would expect, and as we were in the Caribbean we had a day at sea sunbathing on deck. The crew delivered egg nog and mince pies in their Father Christmas

outfits at 10am, followed by Christmas music on deck at lunchtime, and a visit from the man himself (well the reindeers needed a break crossing the ocean!) Lunch was spectacular, with a fantastic buffet including lobster, mussels, pate, Atlantic prawns, rib of beef, a whole cooked gammon ham, and an amazing array of desserts.

After lunch it was back to the

sunbeds, and then in the evening a huge gala dinner was held in the main restaurants, which was incredible. All the traditional favourites were on the menu, including Roast Norfolk Turkey with all the trimmings, and Christmas pudding of course!

New Year’s Eve was no less impressive, with a deck party and live band, plus the obligatory countdown to see the New Year in. Complimentary bubbly was passed round as we stood on deck, with the warmth of the Caribbean night wrapped around us. Simply magical!

People always say to me that they feel they couldn’t be away for Christmas as they may miss the Christmas spirit, but Fred Olsen completely captured this, and we felt more Christmassy aboard than if we had stayed at home! We had a truly wonderful time’

Stuart & Christina’s cruise was on Braemar’s transatlantic crossing, followed by the Caribbean Islands, and a similar itinerary is planned for next Christmas & New Year. There are numerous LGBT business owners of all demographics who would love the chance to have a ‘Gay Friendly’ establishment in the area i.e. a bar/restaurant or a gym, something for the local community. As the vibrant business centre of North Norfolk, it is my view that a ‘Gay friendly establishment’ could contribute largely to the local economy, as well as diversify the local business scene. Sadly Twiggy will be joining Peggy soon as she’s very poorly and cannot be cured. I know that Peggy will greet her with open arms when the time comes. I miss Peggy so much, as all the other regular Holt Country Park dog walkers do too. The dogs I know miss Peggy and her constant supply of treats, the dogs are all looking a lot slimmer these days! During Peggy’s last weeks in the Country Park it was obvious to us all that walking her beloved Milo was becoming increasingly difficult, so myself and my three dogs slowed our pace and cut our walks short to keep good old Peggy company, which we didn’t mind in the least.I often walk The Butterfly Walk to remember Peggy, this was one of her favorite routes in the park. THE OWL TEA ROOMSDear Caroline,The Owl Tea Rooms or ‘The Owls’ has been a tea room on various sites in Holt since the 1920’s, serving wholesome home cooked meals and cakes.As the present custodians we often have people sharing their memories and stories of their visits to The Owl, way back in the day! I myself, used to come in and have a cherry bun with my family as a child and have very fond memories of ‘The Plate of Cakes.’ What fun it was wondering which of the twelve to choose!Back in the 1920s it was called ‘The

Gresham’s Restaurant’ but for many years in living memory, it was called The Owl, owned and run by the Howard family, some of whom still pop in for a bite to eat and a chat.It has been in our family now for 33 years. First run by Dawn and Terry Hulbert and then from 2000 by ourselves. However, the time has come to hand over the reigns to someone new.Ben and Claudia have been customers at the Owl for some time and immediately saw it as the right place for them. Dear Caroline,With the Saturnalian ‘Xmas’ frenzy and the Nativity Narrative enchantment now both behind us, is it churlish to note how so-called ‘political correctness’ affects this traditional festival?On one hand, as ex-Archbishop Carey complains, the former national faith is being squeezed out of the public square, while on the other hand the new ‘equality and diversity’ ideology is undermining Christianity itself.We were pointedly told in your own columns, for example, that Christ himself was a ‘refugee’ from ‘racial persecution’. However, his temporary escape from massacre as an infant, with Joseph returning when danger had passed to restart the family business, had nothing whatever to do with ‘racism’, but instead with Herod’s supposed fear for his throne. Scripture scholars in any case do not consider this tale as historical fact.The only other possibly ‘racial’ persecution occurs in John’s gospel when Jesus evades murder by the Jews who despised him as an illegitimate foreigner. Conflict between Church and Synagogue goes back a long way; which explains why Nazi antisemitism is often blamed on the New Testament itself (e.g. I Thessalonians 2.15-16 & Matthew 27.25).The Parish Rector says ‘The Holocaust’ was


the ‘defining’ atrocity of the previous century (Issue 367). But what about the Soviet ‘mass shootings’ and ‘concentration camps’ which took comparatively more innocent lives even in peacetime? With its perennial exclusive media coverage, ‘Holocaust Day’ is not just a condemnation of genocide and a memorial to its victims. It was designed to support Israeli Zionism and has also become a sacred icon of the modern quasi-religion of ‘equality’ and ‘inclusion’. Whereas neither Jesus nor St Paul was actually a model of ‘tolerance’, the self-abasement of Christians seems only too likely to turn Western Europe into a battle zone between Atheist secularism and Islamic fanaticism.

MARY THE VIRGIN, KELLINGThe Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month.St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. OUR LOCAL CHURCHESLANGHAM EPISCOPI (ST.ANDREW & ST.MARY)

Langham Episcopi Church once belonged to a Bishop, but in modern times is better known by the names of its patron saints.Set on high ground, the Church is visible from a distance as its tower carries a turret housing a staircase from the Church’s interior.On all sides of the tower are clock faces marking the time with the help of a two-toned chime.Within the Church, ancient boxed pews remain abutting the north wall. Iron rods straddling the nave brace the external walls. A side chapel on the south side contains a reredos contributed by a parishioner in 1920.The font is a relic from the lost Church of St.Mary Langham Parva. A memorial in the nave records the Church’s association with the C19th author Captain Fredrick Marryat who wrote ‘The Children of the New Forest’ amongst other works, and who invented a form of naval flag signalling.The large part that Langham played in WW2 is marked by memorials to airmen, both British and Dutch, who flew from the local airfield.Services are held each month on the second Sunday (Morning Prayer) and the fourth Sunday (Holy Communion), both at 9.30am.If you would like to have your church or chapel included in this feature, please send your contribution in for consideration (150 words plus a photograph) to: [email protected] or post to:Mr R Cox, 12A Kelling Close, HOLT NR25 6RU.

I must confess to being something of a galanthophile, a loverof snowdrops -‘milk-flowers’. At the end of a cold and sometimesdreary January nothing brings hope like the sight of this little flower,head modestly bowed, humbly yet defiantly heralding the comingof spring. She quietly demonstrates that small and delicate can bestrong and hardy too, that coldness and hardness can be challengedby the gentle and beautiful, and that this happens most powerfullywhen the little and humble stand together. Given the snow-whitepurity, the humility and the delicate strength of the snowdrop, it isunsurprising that she became identified with the Virgin Mary. Theflower has been called ‘fair maid of February’, ‘snow princess’,‘Mary’s taper’ and ‘Candlemas bell’.

Candlemas, a Christian festival on 2nd February also knownas the Feast of the Purification, commemorates the presentation ofthe infant Jesus at the Temple and the ritual purification of the VirginMary according to Jewish rite. The old priest, Simeon, recognisedthe baby Jesus as God’s Anointed One who would be ‘a light tolighten the peoples’, hence the blessing of candles on this day.

The candlelight might not be the summer sun, but it piercesthe darkness as the snowdrop pierces the snowy, stony earth. I amreminded of the prophet Zechariah (4.10): ‘Do not despise thesesmall beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.’

May we rejoice with Him at small beginnings and may thatunder-rated grace of hope grow in our hearts at the sight of the silentCandlemas bells. May we be challenged to admire the beauty andstrength of humility and become ourselves transient witnesses tothe truth that darkness will always give way to light.

The 19th century poet, George Wilson communicatesbeautifully the snowdrop’s message of unfailing renewal and hopein his ‘Origin of the snowdrop’:

‘And thus the snowdrop, like the bowThat spans the cloudy sky,

Becomes a symbol whence we knowThat brighter days are nigh;

That circling seasons, in a raceThat knows no lagging, lingering pace,

Shall each the other nimbly chase,Till Time's departing final day

Sweep snowdrops and the world away.’

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGTaking Stock of Bones

There is much to be said for leading a simple life; however, there is much to distract us from our purpose!Keeping your food simple reaps rewards too; the more natural your food, the better it is for you generally. This of course means reducing our intake of processed foods and making the most of food in its natural state, before anything has been done to it - simple.Our ancestors were very aware of the nutritional benefit of even the most humble of ingredients, as they had less income and more need to be careful, and bones were never just thrown away. Bone broth has become fashionable and the focus of many a supposedly new ‘clean eating’ trend, but we have been utilising the broth from bones for many, many years. As the Good Book says, “there is nothing new under the sun”. My old Mrs Beeton’s cookbook, from circa 1920, has this advice: ‘A stock pot should be found in every kitchen, for by its use every scrap of bone, gristle, or trimming that in its absence would probably be thrown away, will be made to yield stock or gravy, and thus form the base of nourishing soup or savoury stew’.We would be wise to return to some of the old ways of nourishing ourselves, as judging by the current health crisis in the UK, we are not necessarily progressing well.So I asked for a bag of bones from my butcher, Allards of Holt, who happily supplied me with a great mixture of all sorts of bones, (at the most they will only cost you around £1.00) and set about producing some stock. Some 8 hours later, I had a huge pan of the most delicious, nutritious stock you could ever hope to encounter, and it was so easy.Having stored it safely in batches in my freezer, it is now transforming my soups, gravies and casseroles, much to the delight of the family.Pop a large pan on the stove lunchtime; leave it simmering until bedtime, cool overnight, and you will be well supplied for the next several weeks - simple.Bone StockEnough bones to fill your largest deep saucepan/stockpot4/5 sticks celery, cut lengthways2 large onions, peeled and sliced2 bay leaves10 peppercorns8 cloves3 large carrots cut lengthwaysLarge handful parsley incl stalksTsp saltPut everything into your stockpot, and cover with cold water - there should be at least 5 cm clear at the top. Put lid on and bring up to boil. Turn down and simmer, checking occasionally and skimming the top of any scum, for around 8 hours (6 if you are just using chicken bones). Leave to cool completely, and then strain carefully. Freeze in batches to use for stocks, soups and casseroles. (I freeze mine in freezer bags, to maximise room in my freezer, making sure I label and date them). Carolyn Burn

From 2010-2016 he was Hub Director for Westminster Theological Centre, with whom Fountain School of Theology works in partnership, and he has previously worked with the pioneering organisations Anglican Church Planting Initiatives and Fresh Expressions. His work as a theologian focuses primarily on the Old Testament, especially its theme of covenant and what it means to be made in the image of God, but he has also taught and written on aspects of New Testament exegesis, missiology and ecclesiology. He has written and contributed to a number of articles, books, and courses, and speaks at many churches and events across the UK and in Europe. IN YOUR COMMUNITYCould you make a New Year’s resolution to help people in your local community? That’s the question being asked by

Norfolk Community Transport Association (NCTA).There are nearly fifty community transport schemes operating across the county but, as NCTA chair Kate Gill explains, “Our schemes rely heavily on the important contribution made by volunteers giving of their time and energy, as drivers, administrators, trustees and passenger assistants, but we are especially short of drivers. We’re in urgent need of people who are willing to give a few hours of their time to drive local residents on straightforward but essential journeys. In a mainly rural county like Norfolk, community transport is many people’s only means of getting to and from healthcare appointments or just to the local shops. Around 250,000 journeys a year are provided across the county, helping local residents live independently and access social activities, education and employment. It plays an important part in tackling social isolation and is especially important for older people and those with disability issues, but can also be a lifeline for younger people and families who lack their own transport.“We’re very lucky in Norfolk,” added Kate. “Many communities have a volunteer car scheme, a local community-run bus service or dial-a-ride scheme offering responsive and accessible travel option but we do need drivers and would urge anyone who feels they might be able to contribute to the wellbeing of others in their community to get in touch to see how they might be able to help.”Commercial operators often find rural routes uneconomic and in some areas of the county there are just no transport choices available. Chairman’s Chat:2017 - so what’s your resolution then: ‘dry January’? Don’t tell me you’ve fallen off the wagon already. I’ve always thought ‘dry February’ a better idea - shorter month. Less sugar, more exercise? Well, here’s a brand new idea for you, whatever your age (over 35) or state of fitness: ‘Walking Football’. That’ll help to use up those spare calories!It’s a growing sport, played in many areas of the country. We want to introduce it here. But we NEED YOUR PARTICIPATION. We aim to involve as many of you, men and women, as want to take part, as often as you wish to play. You don’t need to be particularly fit or to sport any special clothing. The rules of the game are minimal, designed to make it as safe and enjoyable as possible. Negotiations are under way to arrange for a smallish pitch to be available locally and we hope to have everything ready for kick-off by the middle of March.So, here’s an easy resolution for you to add to your list. COASTAL COMMUNITY FUNDING BOOST FOR SHERINGHAM AND

BLAKENEY WELCOMEDTwo bids supported by North Norfolk District Council to fund ‘Coastal Community Teams’ have been given the green light by Government.The successful bids for Sheringham and Blakeney Channel will receive £10,000 each from Government and become part of a nationwide network of Coastal Community Teams. The announcement brings the total number of Coastal Community Teams to four in North Norfolk. Back in 2015 CCT funding was approved for Wells-next-the-Sea and the ‘Deep History Coast’ (Weybourne to Cart Gap - centred on Cromer). The bid for Blakeney is a consortium of local organisations primarily concerned with addressing the navigation of the Channel. The Sheringham bid is for a wide range of community organisations to work together to develop innovative ways of maintaining the vitality of the town centre. In Sheringham, the money for the Coastal Community Team will be used to develop ideas to help keep the town centre and the seafront vibrant and attractive, for example by exploring options for improving lighting on the promenade and possible measures to better accommodate pedestrians in the town centre. The Sheringham Coastal Community Team will involve Sheringham Town Council, Sheringham Chamber of Trade and Commerce and Norfolk County Council.In Blakeney the grant will be used to develop a plan for the management of the marine waters inland of Blakeney Point. The first stage of the project will be to develop an Economic Plan, which has to be submitted to the Department by 31st March 2017.The Blakeney team is keen to involve stakeholders and other interested parties of the local community in this project. The Team membership and structure is currently being developed, with an initial public meeting planned for 21st February in order to communicate the objectives of the project and to invite comments and volunteers.The Team plans to communicate further details of this project once the membership of the Team has been formed and following feedback from the community. The Coastal Community Team initiative is to provide a catalyst for local people to get together to address the needs of their areas and help improve local economic prospects. North Norfolk District Council is happy to support these new teams, to provide help and advice and further assistance in applying for further funding to help put the ideas into action. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said: “Sheringham and Blakeney are great locations. North Norfolk has fantastic towns and coastline and has such a lot to offer residents and tourists alike. These grants will help Sheringham and Blakeney to develop new projects and schemes which will benefit the economy of the area.”

COUNCIL CALLS ON ‘ABSENT VOTERS’ TO REFRESH THEIR

SIGNATURESKeep your right to a vote

More than 2,500 people defined as ‘long-term absent voters’ will receive letters later this month from North Norfolk District Council asking them to return a form showing their fresh signature.The letters, were sent out from 19th January to postal voters and anyone who has a postal proxy vote, whose signatures have been held for more than five years and not updated in that time. Anyone in this category who wants to remain an ‘absent voter’ will need to send in a new signature.Returning the completed form by 2nd March will ensure absent voters remain eligible to vote by post in future elections. However, reminder notices will be sent to those who have not returned their form by 9th February. If the deadline of 2nd March is missed, their right to an absent vote will be removed and they will be required to complete a new absent voter application form if they wish to vote by post in the future.Anyone with concerns about the process should contact Electoral Services at [email protected] or by telephone on 01263 516046.

On 5th January, members of the Holt and District Probus Club were entertained by Alex Bennett (below). Alex retired some years

ago as an Accountant, but is well known locally as he was the Minister at Norwich Synagogue until a couple of years ago.Alex explained that he thought the particular brand of humour developed by Jews probably has much to do with the persecution endured over the centuries and perhaps a need to see an ironic and comic side to every adversity.Members were coaxed into fits of laughter as they were told one joke or story after another, all with that edge that is specially Jewish. BROADLAND CHESS CLUBThe internal club championships are still progressing, so lots of one to one games going on in the club room. This competition is divided into different levels to allow all players a chance to play and win! Too soon yet to predict the outcome though, towards the end of the season it can become frantic though as the players jostle for position and struggle to fit all of their games around the team and county schedules and commitments.In December the club held its Christmas party, a mini tournament open to all. There were three sections arranged by grade. The Fischer section was closely contested; the winner was Justin Singh with 5½/6, Heather Enid Wells was runner up. The Tal section finished with Tony Arnold and Robert Smith tied on 4/6. A game played under Armageddon rules gave first place to Tony. The Capablanca section was won convincingly by Ken McEwan, 7½/8, with Paul Badger and Roy Hughes equal second.Congratulations must also go to two of our Junior members for their recent tournament successes. Preethi Saravanan won the U-13 section of the Norfolk and Norwich Rapidplay and Darcy Pashley was second equal in the U-10 section.Broadland Chess Club, as always, welcomes new members and visitors to the club. NORTH NORFOLK PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

Members of the North Norfolk Photographic Society were given the opportunity to see the work of one of their

members on 4th January.Howard Denner (left) was a senior scientific civil servant who retired early to follow his passion for music by becoming a free-lance photographer, specialising in live gigs.Howard soon discovered that to be allowed to take photographs close to the performers, he needed a press pass and that to get a press pass he needed to be

accredited as a member of a photo agency, and that such accreditation required submission of a portfolio of pictures deemed good enough by the agency, which he duly did.Howard’s retirement career then took him to every venue imaginable, from rooms over pubs to Glastonbury to the O2 arena and taking ‘action’ photographs of such as Larry Adler, Stephane Grapelli, Tina Turner, Madonna, Cher (right), Meat Loaf (below) and Mick Jagger and scores of jazz musicians.One noticeable feature was Howard’s remarkable ability to instantly

identify scores of these performers, many really famous and some not so well known but he gave names to all of them.Howard told members that accredited photographers were usually only allowed to be in position for 10 or

15 minutes during the first three songs in a public performance. After that they were ‘kicked out’ and if they had not got the pictures they needed that was just too bad.Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. GRESHAM’S PUPIL SELECTED TO JOIN NATIONAL RIFLE TEAM

Gresham’s Sixth Form pupil, Toby Little has enjoyed a cracking start to 2017 after being selected as a member of the Great Britain Cadet Rifle Team, ‘The Athelings’.The Athelings (meaning ‘young noble’) is a team of 18 cadets selected from the best cadet forces from across the country. Toby has secured his place on the team for a month long tour to Canada in August 2017. Toby has enjoyed an exceptional twelve months in the small-bore range. He has recently been a member of the Gresham’s team which defended the British School Leagues for the eighth consecutive term. He was involved with the Gresham’s team that won the British Schools Team of VIII competition and is also into the final, with his team mates, in the National Team Handicap Competition, which they hope to defend for the third consecutive year.Toby is also the current British Under 16 Small-Bore champion.A delighted Toby, who was selected from more than 1000 competitors at the National Rifle Association’s Imperial Meeting, said: “I am really pleased with my selection and I am really happy to have made my family proud. I am looking forward to meeting the team and spending

the time in Canada.”Gresham’s Master of Shooting, Freddie Grounds, added: “This is a wonderful achievement for Toby and it is a deserving reward for the dedication and the many hours of training he has put in since he first joined the Rifle Club

in 2013. In the last year or so, Toby has really started to show his true ability and he has never really looked back since his outstanding performance at the 2016 NRA Imperial Meeting.Toby continues to improve all the time and is certainly one of the top shots in the country for his age group and his name is now up there with the very best shots that Gresham’s has produced over the years.”Toby follows in the footsteps of an impressive number of former pupils who have been selected to the join prestigious team. COINS STOLEN IN BURGLARY, CROMER

Detectives are appealing for information following a burglary in Jubilee Lane in Cromer. The incident happened on Saturday 7th January between 6.45am and 5.20pm when suspect(s) broke into a property on the White House Estate after forcing a kitchen window. Once inside suspect(s) stole £300 in coins along with gold and silver collectible coins. This includes eight Sovereign gold coins in a leather holder and silver spoons. Also stolen was an antique silver pin cushion in the shape of a boot with a blue covered cushion. Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have information concerning the incident or has been offered antique items for sale. CHRISTMAS DRINK DRIVE CAMPAIGN RESULTS

More than 2,600 people were breathalysed in Norfolk and Suffolk during the Christmas drink drive campaign with 224 drivers failing. The month-long campaign, launched on 1st December, targeted drivers getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Additional patrols and roadside checks were carried out with Norfolk having a 6.2% fail rate while Suffolk’s was 10.7%. In Norfolk 1,320 tests were carried out (424 following collisions) with 82 drivers providing positive readings (61 male and 21 female). Thirty-five drivers failed drug tests (32 male and 3 female). In Suffolk 1,329 tests were carried out (450 following collisions) with 142 drivers providing positive readings (122 male and 20 female). Forty-three drivers failed drug tests (37 male and 6 female). Chief Inspector Kris Barnard, head of the joint Roads Policing and Firearms Operations Unit, said: “It’s always disappointing to see that people are still prepared to take the risk and get behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs, although it is a minority. Dozens of people caught during the campaign would have started 2017 with a minimum 12 to 18 month driving ban, which will have massive implications on their professional and social lives. We target drink drivers all-year round and my plea to motorists considering getting behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs is don’t, it’s simply not worth the risk.”During the 2015 campaign 3,349 drivers were tested with 262 drivers providing positive readings in total for both counties. In Norfolk 1,429 tests were carried out with 90 drivers failing while in Suffolk 1,920 tests were carried out with 172 drivers failing the test. Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner Lorne Green, said: “It is clear some drivers still don’t grasp the fact that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is dangerous and unacceptable and a selfish thing to do. I attach great importance as Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner to keeping our roads safe by closely working with Norfolk Police and partner agencies. It is just not worth the risk and should not be tolerated by the community. We all have a part to play in keeping our roads safe. Do yourself a favour, do everyone else a favour and don’t drive under the influence of drink or drugs and don’t let your friends or family do so.” Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore said: “Every Christmas our message is the same and every year sadly there are still drivers that do not take heed, I find this extremely disappointing. It beggars belief that despite the obvious dangers, too many drivers still take to the road under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

Cromer & Sheringham Brass Band and all the staff at Santander, Holt would like to thank the public for their generosity and support of the Christmas carol street collection that took place in Holt on the morning of Thursday 22nd December.The event incurred no expenses and so a tremendous total of £188.86 was raised, which will be shared equally between the ‘SantanderFoundation’ and the Cromer & Sheringham Brass Band funds.
