Four Turnovers Too Much To Overcome As Pats March Past Locos 40-22By: Kent Hutchison

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    HAMLER - The Montpelier Locomotives

had the cards stacked against them even

before the opening kickoff. First, it wasParents Night at Patrick Henrys Big Red

Field. As if that wasnt enough motivation

for the Patriots, throw in the fact that also

on this night the Pats and their faithful

fans were also paying tribute to Bill Insel-

mann who retired at the conclusion of last

season following a 23 year stint as head

coach, which included amassing 200 wins.

Ultimately, however, those two events paled

in comparison to the effect that miscues

had on the outcome of the game. Instead

the Locos jumped out to a quick lead, only

to fall victim to the turnover bug which bit

the visitors four times on the night.

The game started on a positive note for

the Locos as they won the toss and chose

to take the ball. After a short return by

    Cody Caudill, Montpeliers offense began

the night at their 31 yard line. Dallas Royer

rushed for six, and then quarterback Dylan

Snyder connected with Nate McCord for a

14 yard gain as well as the initial rst down

of the game. Following a ve yard false

start penalty and an incomplete pass, Sny-

der called his own number for six yards.

The junior signal caller hit Caudill for 11

yards to move the chains. Royer got anoth-

er chance picking up two, then Snyder to

Caudill resulted in a gain of 19 more. With

rst and ten at the Patriots sixteen, Snyder

ran the read option to perfection deciding

to keep the ball himself and sprinting un-

touched into the end zone to put the visi-

tors on top 6-0 at the 9:01 mark of the rst

quarter. The score stayed there as Cau-

dills extra point kick sailed wide left.

The ensuing kick by Caudill was cov-

ered by Patrick Henry at their 44 yard line.

The Patriots wasted little time to respond tothe Locos score using just four plays and

49 seconds to travel the 66 yards. Running

back Donnie Johnson capped off the drive

with a 46 yard touchdown scamper down

the left sideline to knot the score at six.

The PAT attempt by Kent Peterson sailed

through the uprights, putting the hosts on

top 7-6 as 8:07 remained in the rst period.

    Montpelier answered quickly needing

just over one minute to cross the goal line.

Following a fteen yard return by Cau-

dill, the Loco offense took over at their 34

yard marker. Royer was halted after a one

yard gain. A Snyder aerial to Alex Zuver

slipped through the junior receivers hands

    prompting head coach Steven Brancheau

to call a time out. The decision paid in-

stant dividends as Snyder to McCord was

successful once again, this time for 30yards. Now rst and ten at the Patriots 35,

Snyder ran the same quarterback keeper

off the read option and the result was the

same as well, only this time for a 35 yard

touchdown run. Snyder found McCord for

the third time, on this occasion for the 2

point conversion. The play gave Montpelier

a 14-7 lead as 6:52 still remained in theopening stanza.

The frenetic pace continued as PH tookjust 1:55 to score once again. Johnsonfound the end zone via the ground for the

second time, this instance from nine yardsout. The kick by Peterson was on line todeadlock the score at fourteen.

After a ten yard kick return by Jared Ly-

ons, Montpeliers offense was back on theeld at their 35 yard line. Could the scor-ing barrage continue on this possession?Unfortunately for the Locos the answer wasno. Royer was dropped for a one yard losson rst down, then the momentum tooka 180 degree turn when the Patriots JakeEhlers stepped in front of a Snyder pass, returning the interception to the Montpe-lier 30 yard line.

Patrick Henry wasted little time to capi-talize on the turnover. On the rst threedowns of the possession the Loco defensegave up just two yards. However, facingfourth and 8, Bonner found Ehlers behindthe defense for a 28 yard TD connection. The kick was good once again, giving thehome team a 21-14 advantage with 2:23left in the high scoring rst quarter.

Caudill returned the ensuing kickoff tothe Loco 31 yard line. Snyder gained sixon the ground, then hit Caudill for an 18yard gain to move the ball to the Pats 44yard marker. Snyder was dumped for a 3yard loss, but picked up seven on another

completion to Caudill. Just when it ap-peared the Locos were back on track, thetide turned again. As Snyder handed theball to Jordan Birdsall the running backwas consumed by a host of Patriots. As theclock ticked to zero, the pile was uncoveredand the home team had recovered the pig-skin at their 45 yard line.

The offensive onslaught continued forPatrick Henry to begin the second quar-

ter. The Patriots marched the 55 yards in11 plays with Johnson collecting his thirdtouchdown of the half, this time from 4yards out. Following the PAT the Patriotslead 28-14

Caudill returned the kick ten yards, andMontpeliers offense was back on the eldat their 30 yard line. The stay was briefhowever as the Locos turned the ball overfor the third time in a row. This time Sny-ders pass on rst down was intercepted byPeterson who returned the ball to the Locos20 yard line.

With great eld possession once again it

was apparent the Pats would add to theirlead. However, the Montpelier defense roseto the challenge shutting down Johnsonon two running attempts, then taking ad-vantage of a Patrick Henry holding penaltythat nullied what appeared to be another

Patriot score. Following the yardage marchoff, an incompletion lead to a quick kick byBonner on fourth down. The punt sailedinto the end zone leaving the Locos withrst and ten at their 20 yard line with 6:31remaining before halftime.

The offensive woes for the visitors con-tinued however as a holding call nullied

a 12 yard gain by Snyder. Another run bySnyder left the Locos with second downand seven. Unfortunately for the Locossuccessive rushes by Birdsall resulted in aloss of two yards forcing Montpelier to punt

from their 21 yard line. The Snyder kick was fair caught at the

Patriots 49 yard line. Smelling blood, thePH offense went back to work. However

an incompletion was followed by a jarringhit from Birdsall which resulted in a 3 yardloss. Facing 3rd and 13, the Pats respond-ed with a 14 yard pass play, then Bonnerfound Storch wide open in the end zone fora 40 yard TD connection. The PAT split theposts again and the hosts were up 34-14.

If the turnovers which had led to scoreswerent a hard enough pill to swallow, thenews continued to go from bad to worse forthe Locos when Snyder was left standingon the sidelines as the rest of the offensecame onto the eld. The junior quarterbackstood with ice on his right forearm follow-ing an apparent injury on the last posses-sion.

Caudill moved from anker to quarter-back for the Locos as 2:21 was left in thehalf. With the ball at the Montpelier 20,Birdsall gained ve on rst down. Royerthen had his number called for four yards, then picked up just enough on third downto move the sticks. However, a fumble onthe center exchange lead to the end of thehalf with Patrick Henry comfortably out in

front 34-14.After the bands nished their halftime

shows, the teams returned to the eld. Thethird quarter was much less eventful thanthe previous two and much less entertain-ing as the bands as neither team addedany points to the board. Instead the teamspunted the ball back and forth, and PatrickHenry picked off another pass. However, unlike the rst half this Loco miscue failed

to result in any Patriot points. The nal stanza began with a glimpse ofpromise for the Montpelier eleven. Follow-ing a Patrick Henry punt to end the thirdquarter, the Locos took to the offensivefrom their 15 yard line. Royer ran for three, but a holding penalty resulted in a loss offour yards on second down. Caudill con-nected with McCord to move the ball out tothe Locos 44 yard line, but a sack movedthe ball three yards in the opposite direc-tion. With the ball now at the Montpelier47 yard marker, Caudill was unable to con-nect with Keaton Byers. Facing third and

thirteen, Caudill launched an aerial down-eld in the direction of McCord. The passwas broken up; however a yellow hankie, followed by an indication of pass interfer-ence on the Pats moved the ball to the PH44 yard line and a Locomotive rst down.

Caudill lost four yards, then Birdsall two.Royer was able to get six of the yards back. However, the Locos were faced with a 4thand 10. Sophomore Zac Mason, now in atquarterback, connected with Simon Wang, but the completion was just inches short ofthe rst down marker giving the ball back

to the Patriots on downs at their 35 yard

    stripe.

Patrick Henry broke out of their offen-sive rut in short order. The Patriots used

just four plays to cover the 65 yards, capped off by a 54 yard run by Bonner. The

extra point kick was no good leaving thescore 40-14 in favor of the Pats with 6:02left in the contest.

At this point a number of reserves wereinserted for each team. Following a kick

out of bounds, Montpeliers offense startedat their 35 yard line. The second unit took

full advantage of the opportunity. Lyons

picked up three yards on his only carry ofthe night, then Austin Grubb picked up

just enough for a rst down with his sevenyard scamper. With the ball at the Loco 45,

Bryce Cooley had his number called twicein a row gaining ten, then nine yards. On

second and one, Grubb was dropped for a

loss of one. However, Cooley added a rungood for four more yards to give Montpe-

lier rst and ten at the PH 33 yard marker.Grubb picked up one yard, then four suc-

cessive runs by Cooley resulted in a gainof 27 yards total to give the Locos rst and

goal at the Pats ve yard line. Grubb took

it from there gaining 3 yards on rst down, then busting through the line to the end

zone for a 2 yard touchdown run. Cooleygot one more touch to cover the extra point

conversion, and close out the scoring and

the game for a 40-22 nal.Prior to the injury and his subsequent

exit from the game, Snyder carried the of-fensive load for the Locos. The quarterback

used his legs to pick up 71 yards on sixcarries as well as two scores. He also used

his arm to go a respectable 7 of 11 for 102

yards, but served up two costly intercep-tions. Bryce Cooley and Austin Grubb

made the most of their opportunity as well.Cooley had his number called seven times

in the nal drive and was the second lead-

ing rusher for the Locos with 50 yards.Grubb picked up 12 tough yards in 5 car-

ries along with the 2 yard TD run. The usu-al productive tandem of Royer and Birdsall

were held in check by the Patriot defense.Royer had 11 attempts for just 22 yards,

while Birdsall had 5 carries and was heldto a 4 yards. Caudill had 7 carries which

resulted in a negative one yard, while Ly-

ons had the one attempt for 3 yards.Caudill completed one pass in ve

throws for 30 yards, while Mason connect-ed with his intended target on his only at-

tempt for nine yards.McCord and Caudill were the leading re-

ceives as each hauled in four passes for 77

and 55 yards respectively, while Wang hada solo snag for nine yards.

The Locomotives, 2-2 overall and 1-2 inthe NWOAL, will obviously concentrate this

week on taking better care of the ball. OnFriday they will load the bus and head over

to road to Fulton County Road 6, home of

Evergreen, for a NWOAL affair with the Vi-kings. Kickoff will be 7:00 pm.

Edon Bombers Lose HighScoring Bout With HicksvilleThe Bombers found their offense against

the Aces of Hicksville, but could not stopthe run during the September 12 game.

Losing the game 52-34, Edon allowedthe Aces to rush for 411 yards, almost 300

more than they had rushed in either of their

previous two games. By contrast, Hicks-ville passed for just 84 yards.

Edon preferred to move the ball throughthe air, as Kaden Sapp racked up for 357

yards on his way to completing 20 of 33passes. Rushing wise, Edon gained 126

    yards on 27 attempts.

The scoring followed these trends, asHicksville crossed the goal line 4 times from

the ground. They had a single touchdownpass as well. Edon's scoring was a little

more balanced, rushing for 2 touchdownsand passing for 3.

The Bombers didn't hep their own cause

by turning the ball over 5 times. Sapp

threw 4 interceptions, and the team lost afumble. Hicksville threw 2 interceptions

themselves, but did not lose possession ona fumble.

Even though total yardage was basically

even in this game, with the Aces 495 yardsjust edging out Edon's 483, the way each

team moved up the eld tells the story ofthis game. The Bombers had to air the ball

out all game long, putting themselves at ahigher degree of risk for a turnover. Hicks-

ville, on the other hand, moved the ball al-

most exclusively on the ground, giving theEdon defense less of a chance to disrupt

their plays.Going forward, the Bombers will need to

either toughen up their run defense, or re-sign themselves to simply trying to outscore

    opponents.

Hilltop Struggles AgainstCalvert On The Road

Making the drive to Tifn, the Cadetsof Hilltop went to foreign territory to go to

war. Unfortunately, this was a battle theyjust couldn't win.

Hilltop lost the game 63-7, with the Ca-dets not putting points on the board until

the third quarter. Calvert did their scoring

almost exclusively in the rst half, takinga 56-0 lead into halftime.

Young quarterback Quinn Smith wasable to connect with Taylor Trent for the

lone Cadet touchdown of the game, a 40yard pass down eld. It was the only bright

spot in a miserable day for the Sophomore,

who went 6-20 for 62 yards on the night. The Cadets were stuffed at the line as

well, rushing for only 11 yards on 18 at-tempts. Overall Hilltop was limited to 73

yards of total offense, though it should benoted that they only ran 38 plays in the

    game, compared to Calvert's 50.

Giving up 409 yards of offense them-selves, the Hilltop defense struggled as

well. 333 of those yards came from theground game of Calvert, who only passed

for 76 yards.Calvert dominated time of possession,

holding the ball for twice as long as the

Cadets, something that limited the Hilltopoffense's scoring opportunities.

David Smith led the Cadets in rushingwith 23 yards. Most of those yards were

negated by Calvert sacks on Quinn Smith. The latter Smith felt the pressure, too, as

he was forced into throwing 2 intercep-

tions.Jalen Towers was the only Hilltop de-

fender to catch a Calvert player behind theline of scrimmage, making a tackle for loss.

This was a hard game for Hilltop, but theCadets will need to put it behind them and

prepare for Cardinal Stritch next week.

Edon Bombers Hold On To Defeat Danbury In Homecoming WinBy: T.J. Hug

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

Opening up TAAC play on September19, the Bombers of Edon also celebrated

their Homecoming on Friday night.Danbury made the trip to Edon for the

occasion and, up until a late run in the

second half, had a relatively quiet eveningwith only a few big plays putting them on

the board. The Bombers won the game 54-43.

Edon had a very balanced offensive as-sault, passing for 324 yards with 3 touch-

downs and rushing for 262 with 4 touch-

downs. Conversely, Danbury was quitelopsided with their approach, netting 296

rushing yards and all 4 of their scores, while only passing for 28 and an intercep-

tion. The Bombers had two turnovers of their

    own, throwing two interceptions, though

one was a trick play which sent quarter-back Kaden Sapp downeld to receive a

pass. Danbury fumbled twice in additionto the pick thrown by their quarterback,

giving them 3 turnover for the game.Sapp led the Bombers in both passing

and rushing, throwing for all 324 yards

of the Edon aerial attack, as well as 192

of their rushing total. He also threw for 2Bomber touchdowns while connecting on

9 of his 21 passes, and ran the ball into

the end zone for all 4 of the team's rushingscores.

Early on,this game had the making of ablow out, as the Bombers went into half-

time with a commanding 36-14 lead. How-ever, Danbury would go on to score an-

other 14 points in the third quarter alone, putting up 15 in the fourth as well.Edon always seemed to have an answer,

though. On Danbury's second play in thethird quarter, for example, their quarter-

back rushed for a very long touchdownrun. Sapp found Landon Bloir running free

downeld on the ensuing possession, and

the receiver waltzed into the end zone forone of his two touchdowns and a sizable

chunk of his 211 yards on the night.Edon ended the game with an intercep-

tion, crushing Danbury's hopes of a mira-cle comeback with less than two minutes

    to go in the game.

While Edon's defensive rushing woescontinued in this game, their offense was

good enough to ensure a successful home-coming.

Wauseon Indians Take DownWillard On The Road

The Indians of Wauseon took to theroad to take on Willard and they were

made sure the trip was a worthwhile one.Defeating the home team 34-7,

Wauseon didn't allow Willard to score until

the fourth quarter. That smothering de-fense didn't stop at the scoreboard, either.

Allowing just 5 completions for 46 yardsand 29 rushes for 47, the Indians held

their opponent to under 100 total yardsin the game, giving up just 93. Wauseon,

by contrast, managed an impressive 372

yards of total offense, with 266 yards rush-ing and 106 passing.

Zach Robinson got the scoring startedfor the Indians, completing a 5 yard pass

to Jacob Newlove. Nate Suntken ran for a59 yard touchdown two minutes later to

    close out the rst quarter.

Quarter number two saw Robinsoncomplete another short touchdown pass,

this one a 6 yard completion to Noah Cas-tle. Suntken rushed for a 1 yard touch-

down with less than a minute until half-time, making the score 27-0 going into the

    third quarter.

Suntken again ran for a score, this onefrom 3 yards out, in the third period. At

this point, the Indians enjoyed a 34-0 ad-vantage.

Willard nally got on the board withjust under three minutes to go in the game

with a 5 yard touchdown run. This made

the nal score 34-7.The only area where Wauseon didn't

control this game was the turnover margin. The Indians lost 2 fumbles, and threw an

interception. Willard also lost 2 fumbles, but did not throw an interception. There-

fore, Wauseon lost the turnover battle 3-2,

though this had little effect on the game'soutcome.

Wauseon Indians Grab A 32-27 Win Over SwantonBy: Bill Bray

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

Wauseon September 19, 2014 The showdown in the

NWOAL Friday night happened in Wauseon where theIndians needed to hold off the much improved Swanton

Bulldogs 32-27.The Indians needed just 15 seconds to take a lead when

junior Mason Creager, with a key block by Jacob Flory,

sped down the northern sideline for a 92 yard touchdownwith just 15 ticks off the clock. Josh Whitcomb added the

extra point. The Bulldogs responded, however, with an 11 play, 69

yard scoring march to answer the Indians' quick score. The Bulldogs combined a few passes along with rushing

as they were the rst team to score on the Indians' start-

ing defense in four games. Junior quarterback, Bryce Mc-Comb, completed two passes on the drive, both to Clayton

Ringle who was on the receiving end of McComb's pass forthe nal 12 yards. Nick Kobak added the point after and

with 6:44 remaining in the opening quarter the score wastied at 7-7.

Wauseon, like Swanton, responded to go on top 14-7

with their next drive. After a 17-yard kickoff return byJeremiah Kauffman, The Indians set up shop on their

own 29. Zac Robinson, proving once again why he is oneof the top quarterbacks in the NWOAL, led Wauseon down

the eld both with his legs and his arm. The senior signalcaller ran the ball the rst two plays from scrimmage gain-

ing 36 yards and putting the ball to rest on the Swanton35 yard line. On a third and six, Robinson threw a passdown the middle of the eld. On the receiving end was

senior Jacob Newlove. Newloves acrobatic catch carriedthe ball down to the Swanton one yard line. From there

it took the Indians ve more plays to score on the stingyBulldogs' defense. Finally, Nate Suntken glided into the

end zone from one yard out with 2:45 left. Whitcomb's

kick was good and the Indians were back up 14-7.The seesaw battle continued as Swanton was certainly

meaning business in the clash. They came back to score

their second touchdown as their eight play, 65 yard drive

was again excellently executed. Following a Creager fum-ble on a punt return, the Bulldogs took possession and

were immediately charged with a 13-yard holding penalty

to back them up to the Wauseon 26. McComb showed tal-ent himself as he guided the Bulldogs down the eld. He

threw his second touchdown pass with just two and halfminutes gone in the second quarter as he found Robbie

Gilsdorf from four yards out. With Kobak's extra point the

game was again knotted up at 14-14.Wauseon's next drive as stopped as Jacob Flory punted

to the Swanton 29 yard line. From there McComb foundGildorf for a 26 yard pass connection to move the ball to

the Indians 49. The Indians' defense rose to the occasionon a rst and 10, as Wauseon's Derek Rupp, scooped up

a McComb pass, after being deected, giving the Indiansnew life at the Swanton 45 yard line. The running of Nate

Suntken, Flory, and Robinson coupled with a Robinson

pass to Noah Castle moved the ball to the Swanton six-inch line. The Indians again needed four plays when Rob-

inson scored on a keeper with 1:37 remaining. Whitcombmissed the extra point, and Wauseon ended the half with

a 20-14 lead. The Bulldogs picked up in the second half where they

had ended in the rst, so it appeared. The Bulldogs had

moved the ball on the second half kickoff to the Wauseon45 after Gunner Oakes' return. But on their rst offen-

sive play of the half, Matt Rainey fumbled and the Indiansrecovered at their own 46. Robinson went to work again.

He completed a 17 yard strike to Suntken that was wipedout by an offensive face mask call. With the ball resting

on the Swanton 48, Flory ran hard to the Bulldogs' 39

yard line picking up nine. It was Flory again for 12 yardsthen seven yards. The Bulldogs helped the cause as they

were agged with a 10-yard personal foul. The ball restedon the Swanton 10-yard line. Three plays later Robinson

found the goal line again as he scored from one yard out.A botched extra point attempt had the Indians leading

comfortably 26-14 with 8:07 left in third.

The Indians expanded on their lead to 32-14. After a

failed Swanton drive that ended after the Bulldogs wentfor a fourth-down play. The Indians took over at their

own 22. Robinson and Flory ran for a combined 20 yards.

Then with the ball resting on the Wauseon 31 yard line,Robinson hooked up again with Newlove. Newlove again,

using his excellent hand eye coordination grabbed downthe pass outrunning the defender for a 69 yard touch-

down pass play at the 2:00 minute mark of the third to

put the Indians up 32-14 after the extra point by Robinonfell short and that was how the third quarter ended.

The fourth and nal quarter belonged to the Bulldogs. After seemingly being down and out, they rallied. As the

Indians were on their way to another score, Robinson'sfumble at the Indians 38 was recovered by Swanton. A

31-yard strike from McComb to Ringle brought the ball torest at the Wauseon one. From there, Rainey gained the

needed yard for the touchdown with 6:46 remaining in

the game to put the Bulldogs to within 12 at 32-20.After a failed Indians drive, a Suntken punt gave the

Bulldogs possession at their 43. From there McCombled his team downeld and with :58 seconds remaining

scored from 12 yards out to bring the Bulldogs within veat 32-27.

Robinson took the ensuing kickoff and the game came

to an end with Robinson taking a knee. There was a col-lective sight of relief by the Indians' faithful as they had

seen and heard from a much improved Bulldogs team.Statistically Swanton ran 23 more plays than Wauseon.

The game was even with total yards as the Indians gained337 to Swanton's 327.

Individually Robinson completed 5 of 10 passes for

128 yards and a touchdown. He also led the team in rush-ing with 103 yards on 17 attempts. Jacob Flory and Nate

Suntken added 73 and 32 yards respectively. While New-love was the leading receiver with two catches for 104

    yards.
