Montpelier Rides The LegsOf Royer & Hitzeman To A

    14-0 Win Over Hilltop

    By: Timothy Kays

    THE REPORTER

WEST UNITY - Last year, Montpelier

Coach Steve Brancheau unleashed a run-

ning attack through a spread offense thatwon more games than the previous fouryears combined. Tyler Benner may no lon-

ger be in the fold, but his understudy

Keegan Hitzeman has stepped in nicely, and with Dallas Royer, Cody Caudill and

Jordan Birdsall lining up behind him, theLocos rang up over 200 yards on the

ground and a second straight shutout ofthe injury depleted Hilltop Cadets on

    August 30, 14-0.

Montpelier took the opening kick andwent three and out. Hilltop took the punt

and got the first first down of the eveningwhen Miklo Amber rumbled for five on a

fourth and one call. The drive was shortcircuited when Hilltop lost their first fum-

ble of the evening, giving the Locos the

ball on their own 27. A false start penalty

made it first and 15, and runs by Birdsalland Royer brought up a third and 11. Onthe following play, Hitzeman stepped back

and in the face of a blitz fired the ball toCaudill over the middle for a gain of 39 to

the Hilltop 32. The drive ended on the

next play though, as a handoff was fum-bled and Danny Payne of the Cadets

recovered. The Hilltop coaching staff thendipped into their bag of tricks for a big

    gainer.Quarterback Mikel Burlew handed the

ball off to Chad Champion going right,

and he executed the reverse by handing

the ball off to Will McKinney flying to the

left. With Zack Van Dyke and ChanceGrapengeter sealing off the left side of the

line, McKinney turned the corner and was

off to the races. Caudill and Alex Zuverwere able to slow the Hilltop senior up for

Hitzeman to finally haul him down, butnot until he had brought the ball inside

the Locos 30. Abner went for four on firstdown, but the Locos blew up a reverse

going the other way for a loss, and a sack

of Burlew on third down all but killed thedrive. The official funeral came on the next

play when Hilltop came up 13 yards shortof moving the sticks, turning the ball over

on downs.Four runs by Royer moved the chains

for Montpelier. A Royer run, and incom-

plete pass and a Hitzeman scramble leftMontpelier with a fourth and one decision

at the end of the first period. The fourthdown play would be the prime indicator of

what was to come for the remainder of thegame.

On the first play of the second quarter,Hitzeman took the snap, turned to handthe ball off to Royer, pulled it back and

took off for the right corner. By the timethat the Cadets realized the Royer ruse,

Hitzeman was crossing midfield. He wasfinally dropped at the Hilltop 34. A first

down pass was incomplete, but Royer ran

for nine on the next play, and then movedthe chains on the third down play. The

ground game now clicking, Montpeliercontinued to push with runs by Royer,

Edon Drops The BombOn The Antwerp Archers

    In Season Opener

    By: Kent Hutchison

    THE REPORTER

EDON- Before the beginning of each

sports season coaches often attempt tocome up with some word or catch phrase

for the student-athletes to remember orwork to achieve during competition. No

inside information, but just a hunch thatcoach Scott Staten of the Edon Blue

    Bombers may have emphasized the

importance of scoring early in their sea-son opener against the visiting Antwerp

Archers. If that was the case then themen in blue and silver followed directions

extremely well as they scored the firstseven possessions of the game, each in

fewer than three minutes, en route to a

46-0 win over the overmatched Archers. The fun began for Edon on the initial

play. With the ball spotted at the Edon38 yard line, quarterback Kaden Sapp

connected with Connor Hug for a 17 yardgain. Following an incompletion, Sapp

dropped a pass into the arms Brock Thiel

good for 20 more yards. After another

errant aerial, this time to Hug, the duohooked up over the middle for 18 yardsgiving Edon first and goal at the seven.

Trevor Green gained four yards on hisfirst carry of the night. Sapp added to his

stats, this time on the ground, as he ran

through the heart of the Archer defensefor a 3 yard touchdown. The extra point

kick from Michael Peeples sailed wideleaving the Bombers up 6-0 with 10:28

still remaining on the clock in quarter

number one. After holding Antwerp to just two

yards and forcing a punt, the Edonoffense sprinted back on the field with

the ball just on the home side of mid-

field. In a mere 19 seconds, the Bombers

found pay dirt again. On first down Sapptossed a screen to Thiel in front of the

Edon sideline. The senior broke twotackles and rumbled down the sideline

for 46 yards finally being tripped up at

the 3 yard line. Sapp went to the airagain, this time to Hug wide open in the

end zone. The two point run attempt byHug fell short leaving Edon on top 12-0

as 9:02 were still left in the opening quar-ter.

Another three and out by the Bomber

defense left the ball on the Edon 48, afterthe Archer punt. On this occasion it took

Edon four plays and a little over a minuteto advance the pigskin across the goal

line. A false start penalty moved the ball

back five yards. On first and 15, Sapphad the attempt sail over Wyatt

Walkowskis outstretched arms. Sappredeemed himself as he connected with

Thiel for a 51 yard gain down the Archerssideline. On first and goal from the eight

yard line, Green hit the line for no gain,

and the Bombers lost ten yards due to aholding penalty. With the ball now at the

18, Sapp found Hug once again for an 18yard score. Peepless kick traveled

through the uprights, as Edon lead 19-0.Still 1:02 showed on the clock in the

    opening stanza.

A pass interference penalty on Edonprovided Antwerp with their initial first

down of the night. However, that was theonly bright spot for the Archers as the

Edon defense held once again forcinganother punt.

Green got the call and gained a tough

two yards to advance the ball to the Edon

setting up a first and goal just inside theten. Hitzeman dropped back to pass, and

after rolling to his right and finding nobody

open, pulled the ball down and took off for

the far corner. McKinney beat him to the

corner, shoving Hitzeman out of bounds at

the one. From there, Hitzeman handed theball off to Royer. With center Jared Shoup

plowing the road in front of him, Royer cut

through the arm tackle of Payne and into

the endzone at the 8:49 mark in the half. The PAT kick failed, but the Locos were on

the board with a 6-0 lead.

Hilltop averted a disaster whenMontpelier recovered a fumble on the kick-

off, but were unable to score. Another

    potential disaster was defused when

Burlew turned to hand the ball off to

Abner, only to find that Montpelier lineman

Zech Thompson had arrived at the sametime. The ball came loose, but Abner was

able to regain control of the pigskin. Facing

a third and 11, Burlew connected with

Champion coming out of the right slot to

move the sticks. A short pass to Champion

and a pitch to Justin Grapengeter movedthe ball to the Montpelier 42. There, the

wheels once again fell off the Cadets little

red caisson as a horrible snap put the ball

three feet over a leaping Burlew. He wasable to outrun two Montpelier defenders to

recover the ball, but the play netted a loss

of 18. A second down screen pass to Abnerwas sniffed out and stuffed for no gain. The

third and 28 play was an apt summation of

the Hilltop frustrations on the evening as

Burlew fired an off-balance throw deep

over the middle and straight into double

coverage. Hitzeman and Simon Wang wereawaiting the floater, with Hitzeman step-

ping in front of the intended receiver

Champion for the pickoff at the Montpelier

32, returning the ball to just short of mid-

    field.

Royer took the first carry for five, butafter Hitzeman turned the left corner on

second down, he was met by Justin

Grapengeter. The Cadet defender put his

hat on the ball, knocking it free for

Champion to recover. Neither team wouldbe able to muster anything further, and thehalf ended with Montpelier holding their

    6-0 edge.

The second half was a continuation of

the frustrations of the first half for the

Cadets. After an incomplete pass, Abner

went up the middle for almost 20 yards.

Abner went again for a gain of nine, puttingthe ball just outside the Montpelier 40.

Hilltop would move the chains on a Burlew

sneak, but with a first down at the 33, they

    departed from the smashmouth tactics

that brought them that far. A first down

pass fell incomplete. A run by David Smithbetween the guards netted nothing, and a

lateral to Champion lost five yards. Hilltop

was forced to punt the ball away.Royer gained a yard to the ten on first

down, then Hitzeman faked a Royer hand-off and brought the ball out to the 22. On

a third and three, the fake worked again, with Hitzeman going behind the right

guard end to the 42. Another fake to Royer

found Hitzeman going around the left sideto the Hilltop 31. A shovel pass to Royer

was snuffed for a gain of two, but the Locos

caught the Cadets overreacting and expect-ing another fake. What they instead gotwas Hitzeman dropped without the ball,

and Caudill taking the handoff down to the

Hilltop 14. Caudill took the next handoff, but found a sea of red waiting to bury him

for a one yard loss. On the ensuing secondand eleven play, Hitzeman faked to Royer

going left, then took off behind Shoup.

With the secondary closing in, Hitzemancut to the right, adjusted back to the left,

and hit the gas. With 1:24 left in the third, his touchdown capped a 91-yard drive,

making it a 12-0 game. Royer got the callon the PAT, carrying it in to close out the

    scoring at 14-0.

Hitzeman was 2 of 5 through the air for45 yards, but tacked on 137 yards and a

score on 14 carries. Royer went 20 timesfor 84 yards and a touchdown, while

Caudill ran 3 times for 16 yards, andBirdsall went 4 times for 7 yards.

Caudill brought in a pass for 39 yards,

and Royer snagged the other completionfor 9 yards.

The plan was to get Dallas (Royer)going, said Coach Brancheau. If we could

get Dallas going we were just going to ridehim down the tracks, but they were doing

a nice job of stopping him and thwarting

what we were trying to do. We counteredthem, and gave Keegan (Hitzeman), Jordan

(Birdsall) and Cody (Caudill) some carries.Of his defensive unit, Coach Brancheau

said, It was not as consistent as Id like;we made a lot of mental mistakes. Weve

got a lot of young guys in there, so well

work to get better. Fortunately we wereable to come out with a win with some of

those mistakes. Well have to get better fornext week.

Burlew went 6 of 10 for 19 yards and apick through the air for Hilltop. Quinn

Smith came on late and went 6 of 10 for 45

yards.Abner gained 45 yards on 11 rushes for

the Cadets, while McKinney ran twice for38 yards, Champion went 7 times for 25

yards, and Justin Grapengeter gained 16on 4 tries.

September 7 sees the Cadets playing

host to the Antwerp Archers, whileMontpelier welcomes in the NWOAL power-

30 yard line. Sapp to Thiel tacked on 13more yards. Sapp kept the ball to gain six

more, then facing second and four from

the Bomber 44 yard line, the junior signal

caller raced up the middle for a 56 yard

score. Peepless kick was true once again

giving the Bombers a 26-0 advantage withstill 1:36 left in the first quarter.

    A personal foul facemask provided

Antwerp with their best field position at

the Edon 34 yard line. However, Tyler

Seaman negated the penalty when he

burst through the Archer offensive linedropping the quarterback for an 11 yard

loss. Antwerp was stymied the next two

downs and punted to the Edon 15 yard

    line.

This time just two plays were needed

to cover the 85 yards. Thiel caught a

short pass from Sapp and broke several

tackle attempts down the sideline beforefinally being caught from behind after

adding 80 yards to his total. The Sapp to

Hug combo put Edon on the board once

again. When Peeples drove another one

through the goal posts Edons lead was33-0 with 11:04 left in the second quar-

    ter.

The fortunes of the Archers went from

bad to worse in the next possession. On

the first play from scrimmage the exchange

from center and quarterback fell to theground and an opportunistic Jordan

Julian fell on the pumpkin at the Antwerp

    25 yard line.

    Cameron Winners Castilllo gained 8

yards. Trevor Green was held in check,

and a block in the back moved the ball thewrong direction to the Archerss 30 yard

line. Green added two yards to the good

on second and 11. Facing third and nine,

Sapp added three yards on a toss to

Peeples. On fourth and 6 from the Archer

25, Sapp hit Hug for the third touchdown

on the night for the pair. Peeples missedthe kick, but Edon now led 39-0 with 8:22

    left in the first half.

Jordan Whitaker came alive in the

defensive series for Edon. The senior

defensive lineman chalked up two sacksin the series totaling a loss of 15 yards.

Antwerp punted for the fifth time givingthe Bombers the ball on their 39 yard line

with 5:14 left before halftime. Greensprinted 61 yards on first down for an

apparent score. However, the gain was

limited to 8 yards due to a block in theback. Green picked up one yard, then

Sapp was sacked for a three yard loss.On third and four Sapp and Hug con-

nected for their fourth score of the night. This time a 55 yard TD toss. Peepless

kick was true as Edon led 46-0 with 2:22

left on the clock.Antwerp was unable to mount a charge

prior to halftime as Edon had the gamewell in hand at the intermission. In the

first half of play several Edon gamerecords were broken. Sapp threw for 336

yards, Hug crossed the goal line fourtimes after receiving passes, and Thielaccumulated 209 receiving yards.

At halftime a decision was agreedupon to cut the quarter time to just eight

minutes each. After playing third quarterand just six offensive plays, many of

Edons starters on were given the rest of

the night off. Neither team could musterup much offense as the game ended with

the score of 46-0.Sapp ended the evening completing 13

of 16 passes for a school record of 349yards. Hug broke his own school record

as he crossed the goal line four times total

and caught six passes for 124 yards.Thiel also had six catches adding a school

record 222 yards. Sapp also had a pro-ductive night on the ground as the junior

gained 85 yards in seven carries, and

three touchdowns. Green added 34 yardson seven carries, and Winner Castillo

picked up 8 yards in his only attempt.Edon is 1-0 for the season. Next for

    THE REPORTER

To say that the 2013 Wauseon Indians

are not strong in senior numbers would bean understatement. But the six that rep-

resent the senior class played huge rolesin an equally as huge 57-20 win over

Fairview Friday night in the season open-er.

Ty Suntken, Kris Boysel, Axel Bueter,

Alec Vonier, Aaron Schuette and CeasarJuarez all made their presence felt on both

sides of the ball in the big win.On Wauseon's first offensive posses-

sion of the game they took control on theirown 41 yard line. Suntken came out

throwing as he found Noah Castle for anine yard gain. Five more plays and theIndians got an 11 yard run from Suntken

for the first score of the game at the 8:15mark. Bueter added the two extra points

on a run and the Indians were up 8-0

After Fairview was forced to punt, theIndians took over for their second drive

from the 30 yard line.Six plays and 70 yards later, the

Indians were in the end zone again thanksto a 22-yard dash around left end by

Suntken. Bueter again added the extra

points and the Tribe was up 16-0 at the3:38 mark of the opening quarter.

At this point, another senior, KrisBoysel made his presence felt. Fairview,

with fourth and inches inside the two-yardline, threw a pass that bounced off a

receiver and into the waiting hands of

Boysel. Kris returned the interception tothe Wauseon 27 yard line.

The Indians put together their thirdscoring drive on the legs of the Suntken

brothers. Ty took off for a 14 yard run, then brother Nate, a junior, carried the

ball the next two times and covered the

final 59 yards on the two runs for thescore and put the Indians up 22-0. Josh

Whitcomb added the extra point and theIndians were rolling with 1:52 left yet in

    the first quarter.

Fairview had another drive end with asecond Boysel interception. The Indians

had the ball again with 1:07 left in the firstquarter at the Fairview 38 yard line.

A pair of 11 yard runs by Bueter and

an 18 yard run by Suntken gave thesenior signal caller his third touchdown

run of the quarter. Whitcomb's kick madeit 30-0 with :18 second.

The onslaught continued to start the

second quarter. After Bueter gained threeyards to the Fairview 41, Suntken handed

the ball off to Boysel on a reverse and thesenior speedster galloped 41 yards for yet

another score at the 11:08 mark of thesecond quarter as the Indians built a 37-0

with Whitcomb's extra point.Yet another stop by the defense led by

    Schuette, the defense's inspirational lead-

er, turned the ball over to the Indiansagain. For the first time in the game the

Indians were finally forced to punt.Fairview took advantage with a deep pass

that covered ground all the way to theWauseon 34 yard line.

The defense stiffened and the Indians

took over on downs at the 34-yard line.Axel Bueter electrified the Wauseon

faithful with a great extra effort run thatcovered 38 yards for the next in a long line

of Wauseon scores with 2:46 left in thehalf making the score 44-0 after the

    Whitcomb kick.

At this point, the Apaches were able toput the ball into the end zone for the first

time this season. With some substitu-tions in for Wauseon, Fairview was able to

score with 22 ticks left in the first half.

The two-point conversion failed and the

score was 44-6 as the first half came toand end.

The point parade just kept on comingfor Wauseon to start the second half.

Taking possession at their own 43, theIndians used seven plays to gain the

needed 57 yards as the score ballooned to

51-6 at the 8:41 mark of the third periodwith a 19 yard Bueter run and Whitcomb's

    kick.Fairview mounted their second scoring

drive on their next possession. Robinsonconnected with some pinpoint passing

that help the Apaches into the end zone

for the second score of the night when

Robinson rumbled in from the one. The

extra point conversion failed and theIndians lead was 51-13.

Axel Bueter was the leading ball carrierfor the Indians as the senior gained 121

yards on 13 carries. Suntken was 8 of 10passing gaining another 79 yards.

Each team would score one more time

before the marathon football game finallycame to and end.

Wauseon is back in action Friday whenthey host their Rte. 108 rivals the Napoleon

Wildcats. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

    ARCHBOLD - The Pettisville

Blackbirds went on the road to take on

the always tough Archbold Blue Streaks

    on August 24.

The Battling Birds gave their hosts

all that they could handle, but came up

short by a goal when the clock ran out,

    2-1.

Miller City Wildcats Run Circles AroundA Flat Pettisville Blackbirds Squad

    PETTISVILLE - Pettisville Head Coach

Richard Nyce described his team as, ...

very flat after a good effort at Archbold

on Saturday. The scoreboard after the

August 27 tilt against Miller City would

    bear that statement out.

With a Connor Tuckerman goal being

the only thing between the Blackbirds

and a shutout, the Wildcats of Miller

City gave their hosts a full dose of frus-

tration. When the final whistle sounded,

the visitors left town with a 5-1 win.

    The Wauseon Indians and Kalida

soccer teams battled the heat and each

other Saturday at the Wauseon soccer

eld in a non league tilt that saw Kalida

    come out on top 5-1.

    After Lydia Schmucker scored the

games rst goal on an assist fromMorgan Murry, the rest of the day

    belong to Kalida.

Kalida tied the game at 1-1 with a

penalty kick at the 32:27. They took the

lead for good at the 18:08 and scored a

third goal with 2:09 left in the rst half.

They then would add two more

scores in the second half, one at the

29:24 and the other at the 17:14 to

    nish with the victory.

    Although we didnt come away

with a win, this was a good learning

experience for us having come off

a string of games that werent as

    challenging, coach Kelsey Newman

said. Games like this are going to helpus refocus and get prepared for the

tough league matches ahead of us. We

did some good things but unfortunately

werent able to get many looks past

    Kalidas strong defensive line. With

several of our key players injured, we

had to change up the way we played a

little bit and that led to some confusion

    and miscommunication.

Wauseon Lady Indians Fall To Kalida

    By: Bill Bray

    THE REPORTER

    The Wauseon Indians continued

to struggle scoring goals as they were

defeated 3-1 by the Rossford Bulldogs in

    soccer action recently.

Rossford got the rst goal on a

rebound shot at the 27:44 mark. The

Indians, again, began to get dug into a

hole as the Bulldogs got their second

goal at the 11:54 point of the rst half.

Leo Rendon broke the Indians into the

scoring column when he was penalized

inside the 18 and drove the penalty kick

past the Rossford Keeper to make it a

2-1 game with 5:57 left. The Bulldogs responded to that score

quickly as they came back down the

eld to score their third goal of the rsthalf just :42 seconds later. That would

prove to be the games nal goal as bothdefenses turned their play up a knotch

    in the second half.

"Once again the Indians come out

sluggish and pay the price," coach Scott

    Hoover said.

The Indians had many chances to

score in the second half as the momentum

started to switch to Wauseon's favor.

Kevin Moden had a strong night in goal

with 12 saves, one of them was a blocked

    PK attempt.
