Terronni’sBy AUGUST GOLD

Have you ever tasted a truffle? Not the chocolate candy kind, but the real thing which is a mushroom about the size of a golf ball. Truffles grow under-ground around tree roots. They grow in many places but the best ones are from Italy and France. Pigs were once used to sniff out the truffles but ended up eating them so now dogs are used to find truffles. Truffles taste so yummy you can’t believe it and they are scary expensive. You can buy both salt and butter with truffle flavor at Whole Foods. The salt is really good on popcorn.

For very special occasions, my family and I go to Teronni’s because there are two pasta entrees with truffles. There is other really good stuff to eat there too. If you order a pizza tell them to bring it cut up because when you try to tear it apart the topping falls off. Teronni’s is a nice restaurant with nice waiters and there are other kids eating there too. I really like the big chandelier and that you can see the cooks in the kitchen. Believe it or not, I ordered the olive oil vanilla ice cream for dessert and it was totally yummy.

The Three Sisters’ SaladA beautiful connection between Garden and Food.

Described below by Chef Louis Farmer

In late spring, we plant the corn and beans and squash. They’re not just plants - we call them three sisters. We plant them together, three kinds of seeds in one hole. They want to be together with each oth-er, just as we want to be together with each other. So long as the three sisters are with us we know we will never starve. The Creator sends them to us each year. We celebrate them now. We thank Him for the gift. He gives to us today and every day.

reCIPe2 pounds butternut squash2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cups canellini beans (rinsed, cooked, and drained)2 cups fresh corn kernels1/2 small red onion, sliced1/2 cup chopped fresh basilBalsamic Vinaigrette

PreParatIoN1. Preheat oven to 400°. Peel and seed butternut squash; cut into 3/4-inch cubes. Toss squash with olive oil to coat; place in a single layer in a lightly greased aluminum foil-lined 15- x 10-inch jelly-roll pan. Bake 20 minutes or until squash is just tender and begins to brown (do not overcook), stirring once after 10 minutes. Cool completely (about 20 min-utes).

2. Toss together cannellini beans, corn, onion, basil, vinaigrette, and squash in a large bowl; cover and chill 2 to 4 hours.

Dear wise Coyote,

I really like to sleep in on weekends but my teen-age neighbor always plays his radio so loud in the morning, and it always wakes me up. It’s getting really annoying! What should I do?

Signed, — annoyed Sleeper

Dear annoyed Sleeper,

Ask your parents if you can go to his house or call him, if they say yes, then politely ask him if he could stop playing his music so loudly. If that doesn’t work, ask your parents to talk to him.

— wise Coyote

Dear wise Coyote, I had a math test last week and I got it back to-day. I got a HORRIBLE score on it. I’m totally afraid to show my parents because I think they will get super mad. This has really been driving me crazy! What should I do?

From, — Horrible Mathematician

Dear Horrible Mathematician, For one thing, I’m sure you’re not a horrible mathematician. But I get how your feeling. This has happened to me before. But really, all parents care about is that you tried your very best, which I’m sure you did. So I think you should show your parents your test. If you are really worried ask your teacher to help you and review the prob-lems with you. GOOD LUCK.

Interview with Miss PalmerBy Cori Wilson

Hello, this is Cori Wilson, this year’s official Art Editor. And what better way to open our first Coyote Howler than by interviewing our very own art teacher Ms. Chloe Palmer! Ms. Palmer answered a few questions and also shared cop-ies of her favorites!

Cori: what is your favorite art piece?Ms. Palmer: Louise Bourgeois’ Spider but I really like a lot of art pieces.

Cori: Did this piece inspire your lessons?Ms. Palmer: No it hasn’t…. yet.

Cori: what other artists influence you and also your lessons? why?Ms. Palmer: Alexander Calder as Sandy’s Circus. This inspired me and my lessons because I think the artists I choose have to have a really playful spirit because kids are very playful.

Isn’t it great that we now know more about our wonderful art teacher? We are so excited to hear about other artists talk about their favorite art pieces with other Wonderland Coyotes! Want to write an article? Write a note to Cori Wilson and drop it off to Room 22 or in the Student Council box in the office. Art rules and Keep Howlin’ Coyotes!

GravityBy LEONARD DILLMAN

For all you intense movie watchers out there, Gravity has come. It is about two astronauts, Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) who are up in space trying to repair a broken telescope. While they are work-ing on the telescope, a missile hits a nearby satellite in space and destroys the satellite. Pieces of the broken satellite (called ‘debris’) begin flying through the Earth’s orbit, and hit the telescope the astronauts are working on. The tele-scope is damaged, and so is the space shuttle that the astronauts were planning to take back to Earth.

This was a great movie, although I held on to my father a few times because of some scary sequences. I really think that Sandra Bullock was phenomenal as Mission Specialist Ryan Stone. I would have to say that George Clooney joked around too much for a serious subject like space travel! Remember, it is PG-13 so you can watch it only if your parents allow you.

Field of DreamsBy ETHAN LACHMAN

This movie makes you do things most don’t, it makes you think. You are not only watching a story but you are watching things you can carry in yourself for the rest of your life. It will make you remember the little things are most impor-tant. It makes you remember to savor what you have because when it’s gone, you’ll miss it. It all starts when Ray the main character is doing his normal work when he gets callings from what you would call, the beyond.

It tells him ‘build it, he will come’. He figures out the riddle and does what it says, and builds the baseball field. He gets other callings but always wonders who will come? He will always regret turning down that last game of catch before his father passed. A whole adventure comes out of one little moment, but that moment meant most. Who will come and what will happen…

Watch Field of Dreams to find out.

Make A Clean and Green EarthBy NATALIE BERNARD

I think that we should make a cleaner and greener Earth. Here’s why.

The first reason is this, some animals are living out in the wild with a lot of trash around them. So, put yourself in their shoes. Would you want to be surrounded by trash everywhere? No, I’m guessing that you wouldn’t. So throw away your trash!

In some cases, there are plastic bags that are just dropped in the water. Sometimes, marine animals get suffocated because the plas-tic bags just float in their faces or they swallow them.

Another thing to remember, don’t throw your garbage into the first trash can you see. If you see a blue trash can, that is for recycling. For example, if you have a piece of paper that has been used and you don’t need it anymore, try to throw it in the blue recycling bin. The black bin is for yucky trash. The green bin is for leaves, grass and compost.

So clean up after yourself and be a good caretaker of the Earth.

My OvenBy Jack Massee

I love Thanksgiving It lightens the living

with turkey and potatoes or spaghetti alfredo

But here is my secret: I hope you will keep it

An oven’s not needed when you have a dragonHe’ll catch you fresh turkey or dry you some jerky

But a dragon for an oven isn’t always that greatThere are some things about it I actually hateLike when he’s asleep and you go to awak’em

you’re likely to end up like sizzlin’ baconAnd when he’s away, you can’t have a hot dinner

I still like him a lot though he could be a bit thinnerIt’s nice to love your ovenand have it love you back

even if it is just a scaly sackBut the one thing you’ll have to learn

is that your food will always tend to burn

Jungle Lab: Part 1By DASHIELL V. LENT

‘Alright, listen up, kids!’ shouted the substitute principal, replacing Mr. Wilson for a short few months. His voice was prosperous, ringing annoyingly through the downright awesome megaphone. ‘I’m the principal for this new school year, and I’ve got some new things to say!’ He said this in a dangerously mocking way, his eyes slanting towards the bottom grounds now and then. ‘We are working on a new room to replace the lower yard! Something oh so much more exotic, so much more replenishing’- no one knew what he meant by that- ‘and so much more FUN!’ The word ‘fun’ almost shattered the crowd’s ears, the children’s ears. ‘We are building,’- he paused momentarily at this, taking some deep breaths and then a few boisterous moments of ahem- ‘a new, fun, (admittedly dangerous) Jungle Laboratory!’ Ev-eryone gasped in unison, even the teachers and their assisting partners. The long noise continued along the crowd, until none but the principal hadn’t gasped.

The principal waited until everyone stopped and zipped tight their mouths, then continued with his astonishing speech; ‘This jungle lab will contain an entire assortment of wild animals, exotic plants and fruits, and, of course, a whole jungle to play and survive in. The Jungle Lab will have a night and day cycle, and will be as big as the Amazon.’ Some more gasps wheezed through the chil-dren’s mouths, quickly, but surely.

‘As you can see’- he pointed deliberately at the lower yard, where an assort-ment of huge construction machines were at work- ‘there are MANY people right now working their’- thirty-second pause- ‘heads off to create this lab. Yes, it will break the laws of physics, undo those of our lives, and create much chaos.’ Some more gasps ruptured from the mouths accompanied by their owners, and even a few screams a-came. He grabbed his fingers together, performing a pose marking a snap.

‘The Lab will be built as soon as I snap my fingers… I’- But before he could continue, his fingers instinctively whistled together…

To Be Continued…

Interview with Marc ShaimanBy JACKSON GOLD

Marc Shaiman (born October 22, 1959) is a Tony, Grammy, Emmy winning and Oscar nominated American composer, lyricist, arranger, and performer for films, television, and theatre. He is perhaps best known for writing the music and co-writing the lyrics for the Broadway musical version of the cult John Waters film Hairspray. His film credits include When Harry Met Sally, Beaches, A Few Good Men, Sleepless in Seattle, The Addams Family, The American President, The First Wives Club, Ghosts of Mississippi, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, In& Out, Bowling for Columbine, Hairspray, The Bucket List, Rumor Has It, Parental Guidance and many more. I inter-viewed Marc Shaiman, my friend, neighbor and Godfather via Skype on Oct 12, 2013 How long have you lived in laurel Canyon?I have lived in Laurel Canyon for almost 25 years. I needed to rent a place for a while and I thought Laurel Canyon was a place where artistic people live. It just seemed like the perfect place to live. So I rented a house not far from Wonderland school. Since then, every home I have ever owned in Los Angeles, is in Laurel Canyon. what music have you written in laurel Canyon?OMG, I have written the music for every movie I’ve ever scored. When Harry Met Sally, The South Park Movie, George of The Jungle, Sleepless in Seattle, The Adams Family, Beaches, a Few Good Men and a lot more. I also wrote several Broadway musicals in Laurel Canyon including Hairspray and Catch Me if You Can. And I wrote the music for Several Academy Award shows there as well. when you were in elementary school, did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up?I think I did, but there was not a lot of opportunity for me to be musical in my elementary school. We did not have a music program. That did not hap-pen till the 7th grade. At Wonderland you have more opportunities to express yourself than we did back then. what project are you most proud of?Hairspray. If you were to write music for any project you wanted, what would it be? It would be a musical about Walli, my dog that just died, and what her friends, Busta and Junk are all doing in heaven. How many academy award nominations do you have?I have been nominated for an Academy Award five times. Now ask me how many times I have lost. How many times have you lost?5 times Does the music happen in your head before you start writing or do you need to start playing the piano first?Yes, it feels like it just happens in my fingers, but I suppose it happens in my head first, then goes to my fingers through my heart. I get a lot of ideas in my head when I am driving. Early in my career I used to call my answer-ing machine to remind myself what I thought of because I would forget it a second later. what one piece of advice would you give to young musicians?Listen to all kinds of music, not just popular music or the music your friends listen to. Listen to music that speaks to your heart.

thank you uncle Marc, I miss you. Thank you Jackson, I miss you and I’ll see you soon.
