The College will offer the first two new Bachelor of Arts degrees beginning in the fall of 2013. Programs to be offered will be a degree in business and in liberal arts. Liberal arts is a course of studies covering the range of the liberal arts: fine arts, humanities, mathematics and science, and social science, and allows students to chose a focus for their major. After the Task Force submitted its recommendations, Dr. Boorstin asked Dr. Cole to become the founding director of the new Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Under his leadership, the Center for the Book has grown into an office of national and international importance. Dr. Cole holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and master's degree in librarianship from the University of Washington, a master's degree in liberal arts from the Johns Hopkins University, and a Ph.D. in American Civilization from the George Washington University. His major scholarly interest is the history of the Library of Congress, particularly the development of its national role.

Spring Break Welcome Back

Students Honored

Cottey’s Career Closet

Two Cottey students were honored by the Missouri Community College Association Wednesday, March 6, in Jefferson City. Second-year students Callie Fleetwood and Kudakwashe Muranda were named to the All-Missouri Academic Team, an honor bestowed on the state’s top community college students.

Representative Elijah Haahr greeted the students and congratulated them on their achievements, and each student received a scholarship made possible by a donation from MOHELA, the state’s not-for-profit secondary market lender and servicer in the student loan industry.

The Missouri Community College Association is a statewide organization through which Missouri’s community colleges work together to advance common agendas. MCCA provides advocacy, education, information, and networking opportunities in service of the state’s 5,700 community college faculty, staff, administrators, and trustees.

#SheDocs Online Film Festival brings you the best independent documentaries that tell the stories of women and girls defying odds and rising to leadership positions throughout history. The free films will be available online from March 1–31, 2013, in celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day! - See more at http://itvs.org/women-and-girls-lead/shedocs

On Thursday, February 28, leadership assistant Priscilla Barrios showcased items from the Cottey Career Closet at a fashion show in Raney Dining Room. The Cottey Career

Closet was first started by Tatum Lindsey, Cottey Class of 2012, to provide professional clothing for students to borrow for interviews or conferences. The closet consists of blazers, slacks, skirts, dresses, blouses, and suits. The fashion show showcased a sample of these items. If you missed the show, check out these photos.

If you are interested in checking out an item from the Cottey Career Closet, contact the Center for Women’s Leadership at [email protected].

Enrollment Management will be hosting a post-Spring Break Welcome Back event for all students on Thursday, March 28 from 3–5 p.m. in the Enrollment Management office. We want to hear about their experiences, see their pictures, and welcome them back to campus.

Art Night

Art students Devon Anderson, Brittney Mitchell, Holly Presler, Ana Maria Lopez, and Harriet Bui, under the direction of Denise Carrick-Hedges and Professor Brianne Fulton, volunteered their time and expertise with Bryan Elementary students at the school's first art fair on March 5. The Cottey students planned the project made of recycled materials: crowns made of recycled newspapers decorated with die-cut shapes made from recycled paper. Brittney Mitchell wrote a poem, Recycling Royalty, to go along with the theme.

To help us commemorate Women’s History Month atCottey, an exhibit titled “Outstanding Women of Missouri,” will be erected in the student art gallery of RBAC from Monday, March 18, through April 23, 2013.

The exhibit—which features the pictures andbiographies of more than 75 Missouri women—travelsaround the state to honor Missouri women whose historic achievements in leadership and courage have shaped the Show Me State of Missouri. Loaned to Cottey by the Missouri Women’s Council, the exhibit is an inspiration to other women pursuing leadership roles that will “enhance the quality of life” in their communities, state, nation, and abroad.

Cottey College is credited with contributing to the earlydevelopment of this exhibit, and that role will be revealed during the time of the exhibit.

The Missouri Women’s Council was established in 1985by the State’s 83rd General Assembly with a mandate toidentify and address the issues affecting the economicand employment status of Missouri women.

The exhibit was originally scheduled to remain in therotunda of the Capitol building in Jefferson City duringthe month of March of 2013, but through the efforts of the Institute for Women’s Leadership and SocialResponsibility, the exhibit will now be housed at Cotteyfor more than a month. For more information on the exhibit, contact the Missouri Women’s Council at 573-751-0810, or the Institute at Cottey, ext. 2116.

Outstanding Women of MissouriWhile in Italy...Drs. Kanji Watanabe and Cathryn Pridal and nine Cottey students visited an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) called “ZERO” under “Save the Children” in Rome, Italy. The NGO helps immigrants under 18 years old who just arrived in Italy.

They teach the children how to live in Italy, offering shelters for them. Cottey students learned from them how they came to Italy, where they wanted to go, what they wanted to do in the future, etc. They showed us an Afghanistan dance later. They are from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, and others.

Five Cottey students with Tracy Cordova and Dr. Watanabe visited “Navdanya International” in Florence, Italy. Navdanya International is an NGO founded by Dr. Vandana Shiva, a well known Indian

scholar-activist. The goal of the NGO is to increase the biodiversity of grains and seeds and support the subsistence farming culture created by women over many generations. We met Caroline Lockhart, a co-author with Dr. Shiva and a leader of the office in Florence. All the students asked a lot of questions and learned a lot about the organization and the issues.
