Join in for JoplinCottey students volunteered on Saturday, October 26, with Join in for Joplin; a campus-wide, sustainable service-learning project. Join in for Joplin partners with AmeriCorps and Rebuild Joplin to assist with the construction of new homes and the restoration of damaged homes for victims of the May 22, 2011, tornado. Chaymaa Bakhalek, volunteer management intern, provided volunteer coordination for the event. Renee Hampton, experiential learning coordinator, and Erica Sigauke, director of spiritual life and diversity, served as staff sponsors for Join in for Joplin.

Cottey exceeded 3,000 hours of community service for the Join in for Joplin project during Saturday’s visit. As an individual service-learning project, Caroline Guerin will produce a video of Saturday’s event to commemorate the 3,000 hour milestone reached by the students, staff and faculty of Cottey College who have volunteered with the Join in for Joplin project during the past two years. This was the college’s third visit to work with Rebuild Joplin.

Join in for Joplin began on the National Day of Service and Remembrance commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Cottey challenged volunteers to “Join in for Joplin” the weekend of September 10 & 11, 2011, and with AmeriCorps’ guidance, Cottey partnered with Joplin Family Worship Center to assist the facility in transitioning from a temporary to a permanent disaster relief facility and assist with disaster response training for facility staff. Join in for Joplin volunteers sorted and inventoried donations, boxed and moved supplies, tore down and moved large tents, built shelving and partitions, assisted with food service and, cleaned and painted the facility. Also, volunteers participated in the logistical organization of the disaster response training.

Not counted into the 3,000 volunteer hours total was the immediate assistance provided to Joplin by students, staff and faculty while school was out of session in the summer of 2011. Kendra Earl, now a Cottey graduate, rallied two semi-trailer loads of supplies from Pennsylvania; the Physical Plant donated proceeds from an auction; a clothing and blood drive was held; and numerous staff and faculty donated time to immediate response in the hours, days, and weeks following the tornado.

Students, faculty, and staff that have volunteered for the project during the Fall semester are:

Documentary ShowingSteve Roese, director of the non-profit organization Water is Basic, and P.E.O. Susie Crutcher, were on campus last week to show the documentary, Ru: Water is Life, to Dr. Sylvio Mannel’s ENV125 Globalization and Diversity – World Regional Geography class and other interested students. The film followed a 12-year-old South Sudanese girl, Jina, on her two-mile trip to collect water three times a day for her family of five younger siblings and a sickly grandmother.

From www.waterisbasic.org: “Water is Basic is an indigenous borehole drilling company, dreamt up by Sudanese, run by Sudanese, staffed by Sudanese. Together with our partners around the world we have provided water to 10% of the population of South Sudan.”

Recycling

Reminders

Did you know...

• The average person generates about four pounds of trash every day and 1.5 tons of solid waste per year.

• Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to listen to a full album on your iPod. Recycling 100 cans could light your bedroom for two weeks.

• If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we could save about 25 million trees per year. Let’s keep recycling!
