TODAY’S PROGRAM

Volume 64, Number 32

Representing Board of Trustees District 2, Mike Morath took office in May 2011.

For the past decade, Morath served as President of Minute Menu Systems, a company that assists child care providers in administering a federal food program for low-income children. His company streamlined that federal program, improved the quality of nutrition offered, and helps feed roughly one million children a day throughout the U.S.

He has had a passion for public education for years, is an avid reader of information about school reform, and believes firmly that our school system can be changed so that all of our students succeed, no matter what their backgrounds.

With a belief system that continually calls him to serve others, Morath has participated in numerous volunteer activities, locally and internationally. He has volunteered in our schools and

juvenile justice facilities and as a mentor Big Brother. He helped organize a trip to orphanages in southern India to set up clean running water systems, and he volunteered at an eye clinic in rural Mexico, where he was lucky enough to meet another volun-teer, Dr. Laura Vondra, who is now his fiancé.

Never one to shrink from a challenge, Morath has hiked Mount Rainier in Washington and climbed mountains near Mount Everest in Nepal.

He received a BBA, summa cum laude, from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in two and a half years, thanks primarily to the International Baccalaureate curri-culum offered at his public school alma mater, Garland High School.

The youngest member of the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees, Morath also is the only trustee who has never drawn an opponent.

Last year the Interact Club at Hillcrest H.S. raised the funds to beautify the courtyard at the school. That area has been well used for the past year. On Sat, March 2 a group of Inter-actors and RCPC members got together for "Weed Out Day".

After about 2 hours of serious weed pulling and general clean up, there was a pizza party combined with flying frisbees and glider planes. Good work/good play. (continued on page 3)

President Fred Brown called this first an-nual, and well-dressed, evening meeting to or-der. Nolan Duck gave the invocation. Kelly Kunst led the Pledge of Allegiance and the “Star Spangled Banner.” There were so many guests, that they were not introduced indivi-dually. The other announcements were omit-ted, except for the decision by “anonymous judges” for the best western dress and awar-ding the NorthPark gold to the winners.

President Fred turned the mike over to his wife Brenda to introduce our speaker. She said that she had known Dave Tanner since they were both in high school in Gainesville, TX. She also said that Dave had entertained at their wedding and at their childrenʼs wed-dings. With that sterling endorsement she turned the program over to Dave Tanner. He began the evening with “God Bless Texas.” He said that unlike the people of many cities and cultures, who say they are really not like what they are portrayed, Texans are proud of their state and of the stereotypes associated with it. He said that Texans donʼt have to ex-

two accents in Texas. People who live east of Ft. Worth, came from the southern states, and they had syllables to their words; but, the people who live west of Ft. Worth, donʼt add syllables, they add emphasis. He said there are ninety-five cultural groups in Texas which has created some very diverse music. He said that Texas music ranged from A to Z, and pro-ceeded to prove it by going through the alpha-bet with a song or singer for every letter. Star-ting with “Amarillo By Morning” and Buddy Hol-ly or Bob Wills, the creator of Western Swing, he continued through “Cotton-eyed Joe” and “Ding Dong Daddy from Dumas,” “Big D” or “Deep in the Heart of Texas.” Among the sing-ers mentioned were Janis Joplin, Kenny Rog-ers and Kris Kristofferson, Michael Murphy, Willie Nelson, and Roy Orbison. Even Van Cliburn was included under “V.” He ended the alphabet with “All My Exes Live in Texas,” “The Yellow Rose of Texas” and ZZ Top. He went on to tell the story of the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto, and mentioned that many of the great military leaders of World War II came from Texas, including Adm. Ches-ter Nimitz, Gen.Douglas MacArthur, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, the most decorated Divi-sion, and the most decorated soldier, Audie Murphy. Also, Texas A&M has sent more generals to the Army than West Point has sent. What an enjoyable evening!

aggerate. Texas is BIG. It is big-ger than the original thirteen col-onies combined. If you went from here to San Diego, you would be over half way there when you got to El Paso. He said that there are

A little girl asked her mother, "How did the human race appear?" The mother answered, "God made Adam and Eve and they had chil-dren, and so was all mankind made."

Two days later the girl asked her father the same question.  The father answered, "Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved!"

The confused girl returned to her mother

and said, "Mom, how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and Dad said they developed from monkeys?"

The mother answered, "Well, dear, it is very simple.  I told you about my side of the family and your father told you about his."
