I have been pondering on some deep thoughts about government. Motivations, outcomes, purposes, those kind of deep thoughts. Most of the people I know who are elected officials have gotten into government because they want to serve and do some good. Those were my motivations, but then I also run into the dark side of government. Force, power, and control. Very un- comfortable thoughts those are indeed. Now you may be wondering what sort of nefarious deeds I have been committing that would make me dwell on thoughts like that? In my position as mayor I have to try and figure out what is best for the city as a whole and sometimes this causes me to inconvenience, some may even say harm, individual citizens. I hope that is not the case but individual citizens may disagree. You can see why these are not comfortable thoughts. Now you may perhaps like some idea of what the heck I am talking about specif- ically. Ok I will tell you. Some of you may have heard about a new road coming to our city. This road is our 600 South or, in the county addressing, 3100 North. This road will go all the way from the highway to 1600 E. so it will be a great road for the city now and into the future. Here is where the dark side comes in (cue the Darth Vader breathing). In order to make this happen we have to go to people and tell them we want to buy their land. And by “buy” we mean “take”. In fact in government parlance it’s called a taking. Now don’t get me wrong, we will pay the appraised value, but if you are a land owner who never planned on selling or developing, this is less than welcome news. I have been talking to all the land owners involved and once again my suspicions that Hyde Park is a great city have been validated. These land owners, mostly Hyde Park citizens, have been very cordial and restrained in their reactions. I have talked to them in their homes and in my office and there has not been any swearing or cussing or recriminations. Some delicate negotiations have been happening and I hope it will all end with at least an acknowledgment that everyone was treated fairly and, even though they lost land, they didn’t feel stripped and beaten and left by the wayside to die. Once again there it is, the force, power, and control. Uncom- fortable thoughts. So when we are done with this road, as you are driving along it, give a thankful thought to those who gave up their property for our good. In other news, and much more comfortable thoughts, the humanitarian….I like to call it a festival, will be happening on February 23 at the 535 E 200 S LDS Church, from 10-1 pm. So much good was accomplished last year! Thousands of dollars of personal hygiene products, dozens of quilts, hundreds of feminine hy- giene products, tables of goods for Little Lambs! It was mind boggling and all accomplished with a diverse group of women from Hyde Park and surrounding communities. It doesn’t matter if you are LDS, Hindu, Catholic, or atheist, we can all work together for others. Plus you get a free lunch! Cash donations can be made or there is a donation box at the city center and, if you can’t give goods or money, come and give time. Fun times! THE HYDE PARKER February 2019 hydepark.utahlinks.org

Message From Mayor Flint Howdy all! Here I am again. I have been pondering on some deep

thoughts about government. Motivations, outcomes, purposes,

those kind of deep thoughts. Most of the people I know who are

elected officials have gotten into government because they want to

serve and do some good. Those were my motivations, but then I

also run into the dark side of government. Force, power, and control. Very un-

comfortable thoughts those are indeed. Now you may be wondering what sort of

nefarious deeds I have been committing that would make me dwell on thoughts

like that? In my position as mayor I have to try and figure out what is best for the

city as a whole and sometimes this causes me to inconvenience, some may even

say harm, individual citizens. I hope that is not the case but individual citizens

may disagree. You can see why these are not comfortable thoughts.

Now you may perhaps like some idea of what the heck I am talking about specif-

ically. Ok I will tell you. Some of you may have heard about a new road coming

to our city. This road is our 600 South or, in the county addressing, 3100 North.

This road will go all the way from the highway to 1600 E. so it will be a great

road for the city now and into the future. Here is where the dark side comes in

(cue the Darth Vader breathing). In order to make this happen we have to go to

people and tell them we want to buy their land. And by “buy” we mean “take”.

In fact in government parlance it’s called a taking. Now don’t get me wrong, we

will pay the appraised value, but if you are a land owner who never planned on

selling or developing, this is less than welcome news. I have been talking to all

the land owners involved and once again my suspicions that Hyde Park is a

great city have been validated. These land owners, mostly Hyde Park citizens,

have been very cordial and restrained in their reactions. I have talked to them in

their homes and in my office and there has not been any swearing or cussing or

recriminations. Some delicate negotiations have been happening and I hope it

will all end with at least an acknowledgment that everyone was treated fairly

and, even though they lost land, they didn’t feel stripped and beaten and left by

the wayside to die. Once again there it is, the force, power, and control. Uncom-

fortable thoughts. So when we are done with this road, as you are driving along

it, give a thankful thought to those who gave up their property for our good.

In other news, and much more comfortable thoughts, the humanitarian….I like

to call it a festival, will be happening on February 23 at the 535 E 200 S LDS

Church, from 10-1 pm. So much good was accomplished last year! Thousands of

dollars of personal hygiene products, dozens of quilts, hundreds of feminine hy-

giene products, tables of goods for Little Lambs! It was mind boggling and all

accomplished with a diverse group of women from Hyde Park and surrounding

communities. It doesn’t matter if you are LDS, Hindu, Catholic, or atheist, we can

all work together for others. Plus you get a free lunch! Cash donations can be

made or there is a donation box at the city center and, if you can’t give goods or

money, come and give time. Fun times!

1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. of any day, beginning November

1st and ending March 31st. Where no curb and gutter

exists, a vehicle must be parked 6 feet off of the asphalt.

Any equipment or trailers must also be removed. If you

have an area where the asphalt meets the lawn, put a

reflector on the edge of your lawn so the snowplow driv-

ers can see where your lawn begins

Jr Council Jr Council

We started off the New Year with an amazing Good Neighbor Award winner! We got to surprise

Stephanie Sampson with a basket of goodies and it happened to be her birthday too - double sur-

prise! We enjoyed not only singing our Good Neighbor song but Happy Birthday too.

Stephanie was described as a 'Wonder Woman' in the nomination we received. She is constantly collecting

things for those in need and would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. We also found out that

she has given service in the military also. We were delighted to present our award to someone who is so gen-

erous and compassionate!

We would love to hear about your Good Neighbor or Good Neighbor family. We know that Hyde Park is

filled with wonderful people like Stephanie. Please send us a short note at -

[email protected] Do it now before you forget!

We love our sponsors that donate to our gift basket ~~ Kathy Kaye Foods, Freckle Farm, Great Harvest

Bread Company, and Maverik of Hyde Park. Please support these generous businesses!

The Jr Council also adds a fun gift to the prize basket.

The Jr Council spent some time this month at The Family Place helping them with a project. We enjoyed our time there and being able to

serve the community. Our motto is "Serving Others, One by One".
