• SATVI conducted an epidemiological study enrolling 6770 adolescents as well as three TB vaccine trails amongst adolescents in the Breede Valley which is located within the Western Cape.
• The latter is world renowned for being the geographical area with the highest TB prevalence.
• The area has a high school attending population of 12117 learners amongst 11 high schools

• Successful recruitment was made possible by first seeking approval from the Western Cape Education Department.
• Principals were contacted to support TB vaccine information sessions at high schools.
• Each school nominated a teacher to liaise with SATVI staff to assist with the collection of interested learners.
• Schools encourage adolescents participation in TB vaccine trails.
• Contact details enable soliciting consent from parent and assent from learners.
• The school curriculum included TB awareness as part of the Life Orientation subject.
• Parents were at ease and reassured about their children`s participation by virtue of the schools involvement in TB vaccine trails.
• Significant high recruitment, enrolment and retention rate were recorded.
• Strong collaboration of SATVI with the schools led to reduce costs, saved time and more effective human resource management.
• The drama production was performed at all schools and learners reacted positively to the message conveyed.
• The promotion of active collaboration with schools and their level of involvement in research activities proved to be an effective recruitment strategy when conduction adolescent TB vaccine trails.
• Trail participation increased awareness of TB at schools and added value to health education curriculum.
