project, practice and thinking. Zhang Ke, a principal at

Standardarchitecture from China, captivated the crowd showcasing his projects that ranged from 30,000 sq. metre commissions to even a miniscule single occupant pod. He illustrated his desire to root his buildings and landscapes in the historic and cultural settings with a degree of intellectual debate.

The next day saw a talk by master architect Kengo Kuma titled the ‘Power of the Place’. The Japanese architect shared his large repertoire of work from Japan and outside keeping delegates riveted to their seats. Kengo Kuma’s projects refl ected his leanings towards the tradition of Japanese building,

however, with an agenda to reinterpret it for the 21st century.

Stretching outside the boundaries of the fair ground, Cersaie spread its wings to the historical centre of Bologna city where stylised cubes made to resemble big apples became spaces for creativity and expression. Each of these display cases were stylised with tiles or bath furnishing elements showcasing the latest design trends and intriguing the hoi polloi with these pleasant intrusions.

Also showcased at the fairgrounds was “Metomorfosi” - an inspiring exhibit that explored the different elements of the ceramic sector. From a 25 foot tall installation made with ceramic water closets to others made with tiles the exhibition was a creative vision of 8 young Italian designers to showcase the different and unexpected use of ceramics.

What was very apparent at Cersaie was the buoyant mood of the sector. The Italian ceramic industry accounts for 41% (in value terms) of the international ceramic trade and continues to see a positive growth even in these difficult economic times. To commemorate and recognize the quality of their products the industry has introduced the “Ceramics of Italy’ seal. This will be used as an identity by manufacturers as a quality mark that is symbolic of best practice and products made in Italy which we have all grown to love and trust.

Bijoy Jain from Mumbai Studio, India, was one of the speakers at

4 THE INSIDE TRACK October 2011

InterviewIn these diffi cult economic times how do you rate the performance of the ceramic tile industry of Italy? This economic crisis is mainly of Western Europe and North America, and the Italian ceramic industry is the major exporter here. However, if we make a comparison to 2009, there has been an increase of 3% every year in terms of export globally. This increase is of added signifi cance when you look at the performance of individual countries. For example, in countries like Germany and France we have had an increase of 8 to 10%. We also have had an increase in markets like the United Kingdom and Russia.

However, there has been a decrease in sales to markets in Greece, Italy and the United States. In Asia too there has been was an increase of 15% last year and around 2% in the fi rst half of this year. So, when you look at the picture as a whole there has been an increase every year compared to the baseline of 2009.

Could you elaborate on aspects of innovation and new applications for the Italian Ceramic industry?The main characteristic of the Italian ceramic industry is innovation;

historically innovation in ceramics was born here. This is because of the close integration of the Italian ceramic tile manufacturers and the Italian plant and equipment manufacturers who work together to improve the product. You can imagine that there are different types of innovation. One kind is aesthetic innovation - where ceramic tiles fl ow as furnishings and establish fashion and trends.

The other variety is technological innovation. As you may know anti-bacterial tiles was an innovation that was pioneered in Italy; another fi eld of research is to enlarge the size of the tile and reduce its thickness.

The domestic consumption of ceramic

tiles is fairly low compared to the amount of tiles exported by Italy. What steps are being taken to promote Italian ceramic tiles in growing markets? The approach is to engage with these new markets and to have contacts with the distribution channel. On the other hand we wish to engage with the design community and architects who are potential consumers of our products.

Italy has recently introduced an anti-dumping duty on Chinese tiles. Why was this necessary?Italy which is a very strong exporter over the world believes that the correct approach is to have an open-market and to play fair. History tells us that competition is useful for the exporter as well as for the domestic enterprise that produces ceramic tiles. With competition there is a general improvement all around. But it is important that the rules must be the same for everyone and based on fair trade.

We believe that it is not necessary to put duties on a country like India for example, because India is a market economy where the rule of the state is limited and the state does not change the rules of the game. This is not the same in China and that is the main reason for imposing this duty.

The Italian Ceramic industry has introduced the “Ceramics of Italy” label. What is the objective behind this trademark? In Europe there is no obligation to put the origin of the goods on the product, like it is mandatory in other parts of the world. The Italian ceramic association of manufacturers have tried to overcome this shortcoming by voluntarily allowing the members of our association to incorporate this trademark on all ceramic products that are manufactured by an Italian fi rm. This will ensure that a buyer knows the correct origin of the product.

“Innovation In Ceramics Was Born In Italy” We caught up with Mr. Franco Manfredini, chairman of Confindustria Ceramica to get a first hand account of the progress being made by the Italian ceramic industry...

The store also featured products from Interlübke and Cor

to simulate a home with products offering several options to its clients for their homes. “We have seen the market accepting more and more of factory made kitchens over carpenter made ones. The trend to have more designer vis-a-vis more storage cabinets is a new trend,” says Sharma. “For this reason all the kitchens have more of a design fl air without compromising on their functional aspect. We have shown larger-than-life kitchens in order to induce clients and architects in giving kitchens a more favourable space in their interiors – to make kitchens the soul of the house and a pride of place in Indian households.”

Since the company’s 2000 revamp, Poggenpohl has never looked back proving to be one of

the front-runners of the modern day furniture industry. Back in 1962, when the world was still looking at unit kitchens (also introduced by Poggenpohl), it introduced a new concept - fi tted kitchen range, which became an instant trendsetter amongst home owners. The “kitchen” company has come a long way from those days.

Though known as a kitchen brand, the Poggenpohl store will

also offer home solutions from other leading brands

“Poggenpohl in its long journey has written pages of furniture history. It is better than most because it offers the latest systems, designs and flexibility to meet any demanding situation be it in terms of design or fi nishes,” shares Sharma.

One look at the products on offer by Poggenpohl and the ever rising demand for international

quality furniture. There is no doubt that home owners in India are looking at quality living and bettering their lifestyles. Sharma elucidates further, “We are quite positive on the new showroom and with the response we receive from our visitors it is defi nitely a step in

the right direction.”Contact: Ashford Chambers , (Old Citylight Theatre), Lady Jamshedji Road, Mahim,Mumbai: 400016tel: (+91) 9820235824web: www.poggenpohl.com

Indian pipe maker Astral Poly Technik announced it was in “preliminary” talks with US-based Lubrizol Corp for a project, Ohio-based Lubrizol is a unit of Warren Buffett’s investment company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

A newspaper reported Astral plans to set up a chlorinated poly vinyl chloride making plant at Dahej in the western state of Gujarat, in partnership with the Ohio, US-based speciality chemicals maker.

Lubrizol will initially invest $245 million in the venture, which could start production by October 2014, the paper said citing a Gujarat government statement.

“The discussions are at very preliminary stage and the same are subject to detailed negotiations. The company would announce its final plans as

and when things are finalised,” Astral said in a statement to the Mumbai stock exchange. Astral is a licensee of Lubrizol, according to the Indian company’s website.

Saint-Gobain may invest `500 crore in gypsumSaint-Gobain has announced that it may invest around `500 crore to strengthen its gypsum business in India over the next three years.

“Saint-Gobain’s gypsum division has said it will focus more on the emerging markets for its future growth and India is one of them. In the next three years, we may invest `400-500 crores to strengthen our operations here,” said Saint-Gobain Gyproc India Managing Director V Subramanian.

The company will primarily focus on enhancing its existing production capacities, besides setting up new facilities in the country, he added.

“We have already invested about `300 crores since 2006, and the future investment will

be more as the country now provides a huge opportunity to grow,” Subramanian said.

When asked about the revenue, Subramanian said, “In 2010, we clocked a `400-500 crore turnover. We are aiming to double this in the next three years.”

Globally, Saint-Gobain’s gypsum business recorded a turnover of 3.5 billion Euros last year. The entire group earned a revenue of 40 billion Euros.

InterfaceFlor India Plans $40 Million Manufacturing PlantCarpet tiles-maker InterfaceFLOR India, a step-down subsidiary of Nasdaq-listed InterfaceFLOR, said it is mulling over the establishment of a manufacturing facility in India at an estimated investment of around $40 million.

“We are at an early stage of discussion to put up a base for manufacturing in India. Our parent company will take the final call, which might be one or two years from now,” InterfaceFLOR India country manager Raj Menon clarified.

Menon said the plant would not only cater to India, which has a `300 crore market now and is growing by up to 25% every year, but markets in the Middle East and Africa as well, as demand for carpet tiles is on the rise.

The plant, he said, might come up somewhere in the western or southern part of India because of their proximity to ports, which will facilitate the import of raw material and the export of finished products.

ACC To Substitute 5% Coal Requirement With Waste

“We are working on LED lights, microwave oven and washing machines. The markets

ACC has conceptualised and planned a project that will substitute 5% of its annual coal of about five million tonnes over the next three years with waste generated by cities and industries.

The company, which saved `47 crore last year on fossil fuels, aims to save `60 crore in 2011 by burning waste, primarily plastics, at its plants.

“We are currently working on disposal of city wastes. We are segregating the plastic wastes and then using it in our kilns. Plastic has a higher calorific value, which is basically heat content, than coal,” ACC Director (Energy and Environment) K N Rao said. “We have replaced 2% of our coal requirement by disposing and burning all types of wastes.”

Explaining the technology, he said that the gas that is generated from burning plastic reacts with the lime content of the raw material and creates a bye-product, which is part of an additive used in the production of cement.

“We are working on utilising industrial wastes in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. We use all wastes as fuels,” he added.

The 21st century global urban workspace is radically more efficient than its previous

generations, and with time, the pace of work is getting faster without compromises on quality. With the need for speed, construction too has become quicker. Gone are the days of elaborately carved wooden furniture and hand-made wall and ceiling fi nishes. Offi ce spaces need to be decorated in a way that’s contemporary and progressive in thought. They also demand quick construction and turn-around times and what better than gypsum boards, a new-age solution that outshines old fashioned construction materials and

and site rubble.Being ready to install, giving

expression to your creativity with Gypsum is highly recommended without worrying of multiple elements like brick, cement, concrete and sand. Gypsum Board Systems can be used to create a variety of decorative designs and performance solutions. Gypsum boards can also be used on a variety of substrates and apart from being architecturally and aesthetically appeal, using gypsum boards comes with added benefi ts that other construction materials can’t offer. “When Gypsum boards

are used as modular panels it makes for real easy installation. In large spaces, the use of removable panels makes maintenance easier in the long run when compared to conventional construction material,” says interior designer Shabnam Gupta, who recently used Gypsum boards in the corporate offi ce of Precision group of companies in Mumbai and is delighted with the outcome.

Clean air is another factor that keeps an office more productive. Indoor air quality is also one of the key attribute which decides the LEED ratings of buildings. The natural properties of gypsum boards keep the air clean and lower suspended air particle matter levels during construction and after application. Indoor air quality often affects the effi ciency of employees, and in the long run proves to be a boon in terms of maintenance and cleanliness as well.

Its fire safety properties also make gypsum the right choice. A gypsum drywall works as a passive fi re protection system. In its natural state, gypsum contains the water of crystallisation bound in the form of hydrates. When exposed to heat or fi re, this water is vaporised, retarding

heat transfer. This makes a gypsum drywall system also suitable in containing fire hazards.(Gypsum boards have a fi re rating of up to 4 hours, which is a lot higher than conventional building materials).
