VOL. 7 NUMBER 3: July 2011 I am suffering from writer’s block. This is surprising to me, as I am working on an article that should be so easy for me to write. We are devoting an entire Insider to T2K’s core value, FUN. I have fun every day I am here, so why is it that I can’t seem to come up with an article that simply lists the things I do at work to "make it fun". I can’t get a letter on paper, and I can’t understand why. FUN is a core value I live every day at T2K. I wake up every morning, feeling energized and ready to get to the office, and I leave every day with a sense of accomplishment, having enjoyed my workday immensely. Why is it that I can’t get this $%^&*$%^-ing article written? After a week and a half of repeated attempts at writing this article, it takes a brutal 4 AM leg workout for me to finally have my light bulb moment. What do I do to make my day at T2K fun? I make sure that I spend every day performing work that is meaningful and inspiring to me. I have fun at T2K because I am 100% passionate about T2K, what we stand for, our mission, our consistency in striving for excellence, our giving back, and our integrity. The fact that I have fun is a natural result of my passions being aligned with what I do. It’s that simple, and that profound. The process of staying connected to my heart has not always been easy. When I am treating a five-year-old child with cerebral palsy, I am in my sweet spot, and I really don’t have to work at being connected to my inner passion. In my current role, leading a company that employs more than 300 people (some of whom can, on occasion, act as if they are five-year-olds) I have to sometimes remind myself of the good we do as a company to stay connected to my emotional core. Volunteering with Chari-T2000 has been a great way to ignite this passion. Clearly, I am not the only one who feels this way. I have been touched by the willingness of the T2K employees to give their time and resources so generously to the foundation. I know that the majority of T2K employees have fun at work because their passions align with their jobs also. As pediatric therapists, we are motivated by a deep desire to make a difference in a child’s life. We feel energized when a child responds to our therapeutic intervention, and when we get to celebrate progress with the family members. Okay, there are daily notes, evals, timelines and sometimes connection issues. Those are decidedly not fun. Oh, and since this edition of the Insider publishes in July, we should also address the Texas climate. It tries really hard to chip away at the fun we are having by melting our snacks, and heating up our steering wheel to a temperature hot enough to burn our hands after a visit. (Seriously, why do kids who need home care never live on streets with really big trees and lots of shade?) With all these challenges duly noted, we continue to have fun at work, even in July and August, because our workday is in alignment with our deepest passions. T2K’s administrative staff includes many individuals who are also thriving thanks to having their passions and talents align with their job descriptions. They continue to have fun despite challenging circumstances. Our team of marketing professionals is facing some sizable hurdles, especially in the North Texas service area. Despite this, they are staying energized, and determined to fill up every T2K therapist. Our HR team continues to find new talent, even when we are often one of four or five employers who are courting a particular candidate. Our intake team continues to deliver great customer service as they handle an increasing amount of referrals with a fast growing mix of payers and managed Medicaid plans. Our division support staff teams are going above and beyond in meeting the needs of our therapists and patients alike. Finally, think of our IT team as they lead us through a challenging software transition. Although it is not as easy to tell when Maicol is having fun, as he only smiles on the inside, Maicol is having plenty of fun and has served as a pillar for our entire administrative team. FUN is a hugely important T2K core value. When our passions are aligned with our day-to-day job descriptions, we have fun, and we carry that fun over to the families we serve. I congratulate all of you who are in alignment with your inner passions, and I wish you a long and FUN career with T2K! WANNA HAVE FUN? I am suffering from writer’s block. This is surprising to me, as I am working on an article that should be so easy for me to write. We are devoting an entire Insider to T2K’s core value, FUN. I have fun every day I am here, so why is it that I can’t seem to come up with an article that simply lists the things

I do at work to "make it fun". I can’t get a letter on paper, and I can’t understand why. FUN is a core value I live every day at T2K. I wake up every morning, feeling energized and ready to get to the offi ce, and I leave every day with a sense of accomplishment, having enjoyed my workday immensely. Why is it that I can’t get this $%^&*$%^-ing article written?

After a week and a half of repeated attempts at writing this article, it takes a brutal 4 AM leg workout for me to fi nally have my light bulb moment.

When I am treating a fi ve-year-old child with cerebral palsy, I am in my sweet spot, and I really don’t have to work at being connected to my inner passion. In my current role, leading a company that employs more than 300 people (some of whom can, on occasion, act as if they are fi ve-year-olds) I have to sometimes remind myself of the good we do as a company to stay connected to my emotional core. Volunteering with Chari-T2000 has been a great way to ignite this passion. Clearly, I am not the only one who feels this way. I have been touched by the willingness of the T2K employees to give their time and resources so generously to the foundation.

I know that the majority of T2K employees have fun

at work because their passions align with their jobs also.

Despite this, they are staying energized, and determined to fi ll up every T2K therapist. Our HR team continues to fi nd new talent, even when we are often one of four or fi ve employers who are courting a particular candidate.

Inside This Issue:

T2K Core Value: We Make it Fun - T2K selects employees who bring passion to the workplace, whether you work in one of our offi ces, or whether you workplace is a patient's home. We believe that having a good time at work is as important as striving for great outcomes.

Hello everyone from team marketing! A few weeks ago our group took part in an exciting team building and educational retreat in Dallas. Emily traveled from Tyler and Shanon and Elizabeth came from San Antonio to join all our DFW peeps; including, Javier, Kerrie, Shannon and myself, Jennifer. After the retreat was over I couldn’t help but refl ect on how this experience fell right in line with THERAPY 2000’s core value - We Make it Fun. More specifi cally, how we managed to have fun and simultaneously learn tons of new, important information.

We kicked off the retreat with a team-

building lunch on that Thursday (fun, fun , fun)! Following lunch, we all took part in a Skype conference with Jennifer Wilson PT, MBA, and leadership trainer, on the subject, “Leading Across and Up”. Jennifer’s teleconference defi nitely enlightened our team and we will be having a follow up with her in a few months (fun!). We were also tasked with reading Stephen Covey’s, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. It is our homework for an upcoming summer retreat that will focus on this classic self-help book with our fearless leader, Jerre (fun!).

After our teleconference with Jennifer, I presented sales training to the team. It was a great learning experience for our entire team and the discussions that came from it taught us all something new

(fun!). We learned how to ask for the business, how to keep the referral source talking, and how we can strengthen relationships with referral sources by being a resource of information for things like insurance questions, community resources and other information and referral needs. After our sales training, we reviewed all of our marketing supplies and tools and the best practices for using them most effi ciently (fun!). We then headed off for dinner (fun!) where we had a marketing roundtable discussion about success stories (fun!). We brainstormed marketing give away ideas and best practices for things such as getting around

the gatekeeper, the lady that sits behind the glass at a doctor’s offi ce. We all learned a lot from each other (fun!), and came up with some very specifi c and new ideas regarding private insurance and obtaining speech and language delay referrals.

On Friday morning, we attended "Five Key Components of Successful Work Relationships” with Charles Gaby, LPC. We all found it very helpful in learning the dynamics behind people’s emotional responses (fun!). It was a great follow up to Jennifer Wilson’s teleconference on Thursday. After the company lunch in the dining room (fun!), we met one last time to review our department’s specifi c expectations including: deadlines for therapists to have a full load, ways to become more effi cient as a department, and ways to overcome obstacles.

In addition, we have decided to create a Team Marketing email to bounce ideas off of one another, celebrate successes (fun!

fun! fun!) and determine solutions for challenging situations. Such as the one we face in Dallas right now where we are only in network with one STAR MCD provider (not fun). Before ending our retreat, we had one last bit of fun, a photo shoot with Maicol. I think this picture pretty much sums it up! FUN!

I am happy to share this information with you as we hope that it gives you peace of mind knowing that your marketing team is continuously working on developing our personal and professional skill sets. We want to be the best and most effective in our T2K roles, and have some fun along the way too. We have plans for additional sales training and consultation, and we are interested in hearing your input regarding marketing in your area. Please contact any one of us if you have ideas, fun or not!

I play music during my sessions. I have three different playlists on my iPhone that I use:HipHop/Popular music (edited versions of course!)Reggaeton music (for my Spanish-speaking only kiddos)Kid Songs (including Disney songs, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Dora the Explorer)That way I can pick out age and language appropriate songs.

It can all be summed up in 1 word... sodapalooza!!! 49 cent drinks at racetrac, all summer long!

• Coffee with a friend in the morning to make the freeway drive bearable.

• Listen to my IPOD, sing & even dance while in my offi ce handling all daily business and getting those auths!!! ;-)

• Add on my email correspondence and sometimes joke around with my fellow co-workers just to lighten the moment.

Do you have a favorite mix to get you pumped for your work drive? Yes. Marvin Sapp gets me motivated for my dayDo you have nicknames for your favorite co-workers?Cindy E- "quick Draw McGraw", Keane-"Mean Girl"Crisann Skinner (Said in a southern drawl)Also, I make my day fun by cracking mucho jokes and seeing the funny in things that others may see as stressful. I have a dark sense of humor that people who know me get.

Nicknames for my co-workers: It helps to always keeps the mood light:• Gina Suick-“Gina Maria Cantalina”• Vanessa Richardson-“Vanessera”• Morgan Hanhart-“Morgana”• Darla Grant-“Darla Mae Jenkins” pronounced “Jayn-kins”• Emily Evans-“Emalina”

I am motivated by the knowledge that I just might make at least one person laugh during my day, there's nothing like it to me. It's music to my ears.

I do lots of audio books in the car so it gives me downtime in between kids, and I don't get tired of the same over-played radio songs!

North offi ce had a “Staycation” Party last week. Beach wear was encouraged and beach music was provided. We had a pot luck with summer foods that included strawberry shortcake served on meringue! Yummy!

I like to see if I can make Maicol smile with a joke. He is a tough one to crack.

I have nicknames for some of my co-workers Anna G. Clum is DIVA. I also refer to Toni Barron, ST as Ms. TONI followed by “ The #1 therapist in my heart”.To zing through my day I laugh and share funny stories/gestures with my co-workers.

• I check out books on cd from the library since I live in the car.

• Dunkin Donuts iced coffee in LARGE cup gets me through the day.

In the morning I listen to Jammin' J Javi when I get ready for work. Good music puts me in a good mood. When my co-workers are stressing or having a bad day, I like to crack a joke or poke fun at something that happened. I bring out my humorous charm. When I get to the offi ce, one of the perks of being the AOS is sitting in the front by a BIG window! I get to see all the “eye candy” that walks by from Homeland Security. This is how I have fun in San Antonio!!!

SuMMeRtiMe Fun tiMe!Thank you T2K’ers for sharing how you make your workday fun. Here are a few inspiring ideas from your fellow employees on how to make your work environment even more enjoyable!

Seven Habits of Really Fun People

If you have talked to Jerre recently, chances are that he has recommended that you read "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People", by Stephen R. Covey. (Just for the record-I listened to the audio book again, and I'm very glad I did!)

Besides a lot of great reminders and new a-ha moments, it also made me think. We could possibly develop a list of great habits for each one of our core values! So here you have it; my to-do list for creating fun in the work place!

1. Lighten up. I mean really, lighten up! Keep perspective on life; most annoyances or inconveniences don’t amount to much if you keep them in perspective. Compare them to seriously life altering events. Ask yourself, how will this impact my life one day, one week, one month, or one year from now? Chances are that very few things will be impactful or even remembered after a week or two. A clear sign that you can lighten up on that issue!

2. Take time to bond with at least one other person at work with whom you can share levity and laughter. A person with a similar sense of humor will offer many opportunities to capitalize on “inside” jokes or help you to balance a sour mood with a ‘look at the bright side’ chat. I have one co-worker that appreciates my country humor, so for a few days we shared a laugh whenever she called. I would see her extension and answer the phone in my best country voice, “Road Kill Pizza, would you like to hear about our anchovy/armadillo special?”

3. Look for the humor even in difficult situations. Can you imagine what a good story that situation will make once you get through it? Are you able to find the one angle that makes a tough situation amusing? Sometimes you just have to laugh!

4. Laugh at yourself. (What else can you do?) People that take themselves too seriously, often miss a moment to endear themselves to others. We all understand embarrassing moments-especially if we admit the embarrassment as part of being human! This also gives others the permission to laugh it up and creates another bonding opportunity.

5. Share the joy! Joy is a deep happiness that satisfies the soul. This is what we feel when we work hard towards a goal and finally reach accomplishment. For example, I really enjoy messages from my cohorts sharing the successes of children we have both treated. Keeping our sense of purpose alive through this sharing is refreshing and uplifting.

6. Let’s go crazy! Search for solutions that are outside the box! Try dancing instead of walking, and singing instead of talking. Do 1-minute brainstorms, coming up with all of the (even crazy) possibilities and then talk through each one; you will be amazed at the outcome.

7. Mix it up! Take a different route to work, eat something new, and keep therapy sessions fresh and enjoyable for you and your client. You know it’s time to change activities if you don’t feel a spark of excitement as you present it to your client. Share a personable (not too personal) exchange with those you serve. Let them know that you recognize them as individuals not just another referral, or complaint to process.

Remember, fun is contagious! If you start it…somebody else will catch on and spread the fun to others!

Support Eber’s freedom van!Eber has been chosen as Chari-T2000’s fi rst van and lift recipient! This is no small undertaking – a van and lift run about $20,000. We need your help to raise the money to get Eber and his family a van large enough to fi t his electric wheelchair.

Eber is sixteen, has cerebal palsy and cannot physically operate a manual wheelchair. He can operate an electric wheelchair with a joystick. His family cannot fi t the electric wheelchair into their current car. Therefore, Eber can’t get out and about much. Interview with Becky Burgess, Human Resources Specialist

How many people worked here when you first started?

One, Jerre!

Does time fly when you are having fun?

Absolutely! Unfortunately I've seen as I've gotten older that time really does fly – at warp speed!

What was your first job ever in life? Paying or non-paying?

My first job was helping my Mom on a little snow cone truck she used to run in the Balch Springs and Mesquite areas. It paid in freshly shaved snow cones of all flavors, as many as I could eat in a day! The first "real" job I had was as a teenager as a helper in the 2 year old room of a daycare center. And amazingly eighteen 2 year olds didn't make me run from the thought of motherhood!

What do you look forward to most every workday?

The thought of another day with my children, my grandchild, my sister and my parents! Our family has been through some extremely hard losses over the years and we have all learned to savor every minute of time we have with each other.

What has changed the most about THERAPY 2000?

I think the biggest change for me is realizing that I don't know everyone! Back in the "good old basement days" as us old-timers refer to it and even during the time we were in our first office, we really got to know everyone so well! Now there are faces I don't recognize and people I rarely, if ever, get to interact with. Oh, and I no longer have to chase Jerre's dogs out of the house, bump into his chair when I push mine back or provide curbside pickup of paper notes and VVL's!

What has stayed the same throughout your tenure here?

The core values of T2K have never changed. Jerre has remained committed to providing the highest quality of care to our patients and making the company one we can all be proud to be a part of!

What are you most proud of having achieved at THERAPY 2000?

That's a tough one! I guess I would have to say that I'm proud to have touched on all office tasks in this company during my time here. There was a time (when we were small of course!) that I did it all! I've taken the referrals, gotten the orders and authorizations, kept up with all the HR responsibilities, did the billing and collections, paid the bills, did the payroll, etc. It gives me a great appreciation for every person working behind the scenes to keep this place going!

Hear you are on the Chari-T2000 board, how is that going?

Chari-T2000 has been an awesome experience! That is really one of the most rewarding and fun parts of my time here! It's something we have talked about for years and to see it become a reality and to know I've been allowed the opportunity of serving and playing a small part in touching lives is great! I look forward to seeing the same growth with it that I've seen with the company. Any T2K'ers out there that have not gotten involved yet give me a call! I'd love to get everyone onboard!

What do you like to do for fun in the summer?

Exploring every inch of our acreage with my 2-year-old grandbaby. She loves to get a watering can and with MANY fill ups water every plant on the place and every tree, weed and wildflower too! Playing on the "playground" (aka the swing set in our yard), going to the "river" (aka our little lake), blowing billions of bubbles, walking over to see the neighbors pot belly pig (Kenna is very disappointed he isn't pink), seeing the ducks, feeding the fish in the pond, and saying hello to the "big bad wolf" (aka the neighbors scruffy dog) who she decided isn't bad at all! She is the absolute light of my life!

Interview with Karyn Dobbins, Director Human Resources

What was your first job ever?

My first job was at Payless Shoe Source when I was 16. I remember the day I went in for my interview I spilled coke all over my skirt on the way to the interview so I think I got hired out of sympathy!

Tell us a little about your background?

I grew up raising horses so I wanted to major in something to do with horses. I went to Texas A&M University to study Recreation Management. When I graduated I moved to Dallas to get my Masters in Therapeutic Recreation at UNT, with the intention of owning a therapeutic horse farm. I got a part-time job at the YMCA while in school. I loved the YMCA so much I took a break from school and went to work full time. The Y is where I learned about management and HR and decided to change my career focus. I like the fact I am somewhat back in a therapy environment so my major was not a complete waste of time!

Did you major in HR?

Nope! However, I have a personal goal to get my Masters in HR.

How did you learn about the job?

Trey Darby. Trey was a partner with Grizzaffi Darby, who provided insurance services to T2K for many years. I am so thankful he thought of me when he heard about the position.

What do you look forward to most every workday?

The employees here are so nice so coming to work is fun. I have a great HR team so I look forward to working with them and setting goals and reaching them

together! Also, I like to hear Jerre laugh - his laugh cracks me up and reminds me that business owners like to laugh and have fun too every now and then.

What is your favorite part about working in HR?

What I love most about HR is the opportunity to be the face of the organization for new hires. I love when a new employee starts with the company and feels they found a home. I also like that HR has a business side and I am able to contribute to the long-term goals of the company from a people strategy.

Have you ever gotten lost in the maze of THERAPY 2000’s corporate office?

Of course! Our offices are like Feng Shui meets Sci-Fi. I love the peaceful fountain in the entrance but with rooms called "Area 51" and the "Dungeon" - it can be scary if you get lost!

What was the worst interview you ever conducted?

I love interviews! I have lots of stories but the one that stands out the most is a position for a sales coordinator. The candidate was not prepared for any type of basic interview questions. What she did do is bring a t-shirt and show me how well she can fold it and talked to me about how she coordinates her drawers by color and this should be the reason we need to hire her. She probably had good intentions but it got way off track! And...on more than one occasion I have had candidates show up with two different shoes on.

What do like to do for fun in the summer?

Both my kids play competitive sports which means practice, private lessons, and games all summer. With 8:00 AM games most weekends I am embarrassed to say what we do for fun is sleep in on the weekends when we can! We also love Texas Ranger games, movies and a good ole' fashion BBq cookout with friends.

We welcome him as our newest therapist!

Elsie and Edgar are yearning to be a part of our Central Staff. They visit us daily and are often waiting for us when we arrive at our offi ces. Edgar even attempts to fl y right in the window to join us! When that doesn’t work, he parades in front of our windows, longingly staring in. When you look out Di’s window all you see is Edgar’s head moving slowly from one window to another–back and forth, back and forth!

Mary Anna Valderas, OTR, PRN, started in Central on 4/20/11. Mary Anna has worked for the Dallas ISD for 10+ years. She graduated from TWU and was referred by Joyce Carter. West DivisionPT'S BRAVE ACTIONS DIVERT DISASTER

WEST HAS A NEW BABY

It was one of those phone calls as a husband you never want to get. My wife, Amber Stewart Krumholtz, started with THERAPY 2000 in August of last year. When she called me one rainy afternoon in May, there was a distinct

panic in her voice.

“The apartment I was in just burnt down,” she nervously said. ”Honey, are you ok? Tell me you’re ok, what happened?” I replied. The details of our conversation sent chills down my spine and reminded of the frailty of life. Never in our young marriage have I felt so vulnerable, yet so relieved at the same time. “We all got out ok. It happened so fast.” She reiterated.

Amber was working with one of her favorite little patients that day, Muhammad, a one-year old who has struggled (courageously) with epilepsy since his birth. Muhammad’s mom was in the kitchen cooking while Amber was working on her visit. Muhammad’s older brother played nearby.

In a split moment there appeared to be a red glow coming out from the wall that separated the kitchen from the rest of the apartment. Muhammad’s brother, with a child’s innocence, instinctively walked towards the kitchen. As Amber would describe it, the look on his face as he turned the corner spoke a thousand words. Something was terribly wrong. Instincts took over. Amber rushed into the kitchen. The fl ames were already too high and too hot. She screamed for a fi re extinguisher. There was not one. Water wouldn’t work; the mother had been cooking with grease when it caught fi re. As the fl ames engulfed the entire kitchen she realized they had to get out. Quick. She rushed back to the living room and grabbed Mohammad, as his mother grabbed his brother. They left without a single possession. There was no time. By that point the entire kitchen was in fl ames, the black smoke fi ling half way down the walls. Amber directed the mom and kids to get downstairs, as she knocked frantically on the neighbors doors advising them to get out, that there was a fi re. She screamed again for an extinguisher from the neighbors, but they spoke little English. It was too late. “Get out,” she yelled.

In a cruel bit of irony they all stood outside, in the pouring rain, as all of the family’s possessions burned in front of them. Mohammed’s family lost everything in the fi re. But they were ok. God bless, they were all ok. Amber would never consider herself to be a hero (she’d be mad at me for saying it). But she is one in my book. She acted instinctively and courageously, putting her own safety in jeopardy for the well being of her patient and others. I’ll never forget that phone call. It gives me chills just thinking about it. But there are lessons to be learned. Hug the ones you love. Tell them you love them. Never leave without saying goodbye. My wife acted with great bravery and now, more than ever, I cherish the moments we have together.

San Antonio/Austin DivisionVISIT TOP TEXAS DESTINATION, SAN ANTONIO

Did your city make the top 10? San antonio did! With the city’s comfortable welcoming atmosphere, beautiful attractions and of course the fastest growing pediatric home health company, THERaPy 2000,

how could we not? yes, according to the State Tourism Offi ce, we made the list of top tourist attractions in Texas. The San antonio Division would like to welcome you as you begin summer vacation. Below we’ve listed the top 5 attractions in our city, and would love for you to stop by if you are out this way!

1. The River Walk: According to about.com, San Antonio’s Paseo Del Rio (that’s the River Walk to all you tourists!) is

ranked as the number one tourist attraction in Texas. Most likely because one fi nds beautiful architecture, history,

shops, and restaurants all in one place! Stroll then shop the Rivercenter Mall across the San Antonio River then dine

at Southern Living’s Food Finds recommended Las Canarias Restaurant, located in the La Mansión del Rio Hotel.

With sidewalks, stairs to the street level, historic sites to tour, and boats fl oating lazily down the canals, you will fi nd

plenty to enjoy in this area of San Antonio.

2. The Alamo: USA Tourist cites, “The Alamo and the River Walk are the main tourist attractions in San Antonio and

the top two attractions in the entire state of Texas. The Alamo is a partially reconstructed Spanish mission in the

heart of the city and was the historic place where 189 Texas patriots died in 1836 while defending their land against

a greatly superior Mexican army led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The defenders included the famous

frontiersman Davy Crockett and colorful Texan knife fi ghter Jim Bowie.” If you live in Texas and haven’t been to this

historical site yet, it is a must see.

3. Sea World: Home of Shamu, and other sea life such as, sea lions, sharks, fi sh, and penguins. They recently opened

the Sesame Street Bay of Play, an all-new attraction for families featuring Elmo, Big Bird and all their friends. Sesame

Street Bay of Play includes 3 acres of exciting rides, shows and play areas. One way to stay cool this summer is a

family Sea World visit.

4. Six Flags Fiesta Texas San Antonio: One of the famous theme parks, which touts, “thrilling world-class rides

and roller coasters, including pulse-pumping Goliath. Suspended from the track above, Goliath sends riders fl ying

at intense speeds over the outside of hairpin turns, vertical loops, corkscrews and a one-of-a-kind zero gravity

heartline spine with nothing but air beneath their dangling feet.” They also have White Water Bay for cooling off

in the day, in addition to shops, shows, and treats and eats! End the day of fun, enjoying the spectacular laser and

fi reworks show, called Lone Star Nights. By the way we have coupons at the offi ce, if anyone is planning on going

this summer!

5. THERAPY 2000, San Antonio Division: Welcome to the fastest growing pediatric home health company in San
