1. -Storyville 80 p53 "Jazz: A History of theNew York Scene" by Samuel Charters & LenKunstadt statedthat the band went into the CottonClub the first week in July (1927). Since thisprecedes the famous 4 Dec 27 opening did thisoccur and if so what were the dates?

2. -Was there a Cameo-Pathe recording sessionin Oct 27? If so, the date?

3. -A 2 week engagement at the Palace Theatrein New York NY beginning 07 Jun 30 has notbeen verified.

4. -There is a question whether the band was inChicago !L or Buffalo NY the week beginning 22May 31.

5. -There is an unverified report that the bandplayed for a Harvard-Dartmouth Ball at theCopley Plaza Hotel in Boston NY in Nov 31.

6. -There is an unverified report that the bandplayed for 4 dances in the Chicago IL area 28thru 31 Jul 32.7. -There is an unverified report that duringthe latter part of May 1934, on the way toChicago for 4 weeks at the Century of ProgressWorlds Fair, the band had gigs in Seattle WA,Tacoma WA, Ogden UT, Salt Lake City UT andDenver CO.8. -When did the Duke Ellington Orchestraclose their 1943 stay at the HurricaneRestaurant? The New Yorker Magazine 25 Sep43 stated that the session would close Friday 24Sep 63. Jerry Valburn, in his excellentpresentation at the Duke Ellington Conferencein Ottawa last May, gave the closing date asThursday 23 Sep 43. Since the Orchestraopened at the Hurricane on a Thursday 01 April43 it would seem logical that they would closeon a Wednesday. are in sequence. Note that "VIP's Boogie" plus "Jam WithSam" are here under the title "Threesome". The be openedwith "A Train" (not on LP) and there was another "A Train"(not on LP) preceding "Sittin' And Rockin'" (title as onsleeve - see DEMS87/4-5). Also note that "Cheek To Cheek"is not by Ellington but Basie. The program closed withstill another "A Train" (not on LP). It's a pity that thespoken parts, very joyous, are taken out on the LP. Con¬cerning the date, we are very suspicious. We know Duke tohave played Birdland 21-30Jun51, and we believe this be tobelong somewhere during this period in June. (Aasland)

Radio station "Europe 1" archives:I can tell you from a phone call I had with somebody at

that radio station, that they are non-existent(!). Quite un¬believable. Only Mr. Frank Tenot, once a famous jazz broad¬caster on that station, and now head of it, can help us. Itis the same Europe 1 station that on 24Dec60 organized aChristmas Eve Service at the Palais de la Defense, at whicha number of French artists participated, and the same Dukementions in MIMM, page 143, and where he played "Come Sun¬day". The whole thing must have been recorded by "Europe 1".But what became of the tape? Here is another mystery 1 hopeto be able to shed some light on, someday. (Moul£)

Some comments: I know of a non-live broadcast from one ofthe complete 28oct58 concerts (or composed from both con¬certs same day). I also know that what is issued on MagicAWE-19 (LP) is taken from a broadcast by "Europe 1" from oneof the concerts, or from both, as performed 29oct58(see DEMS90/3-2). Two titles, "Together" and "Jeep's Blues"(nc) wererecently broadcast by Radio Denmark (see DEMS90/3-3, DR-42).These selections are from 29oct58. not as from "Nov(?)58" asmarked in DEMS90/3-3 (please notify). Consequently thisleads me to belive that there ought to be further 29oct58material to be found in the archives of Radio Denmark.

tracks confirms, what Jerry Valburn once told me: They wererecorded on 18Jul66 at the session, which produced the FAN¬TASY LP "The Pianist". "The Blues Is Waiting"(«The Shepherd)is probably one of the two takes issued on the FANTASY al¬bum, but "Tingling Is A Happiness" and "Dancers ..." must betwo titles from the session not used for the LP issue.

V ion "label". It comes as 3 separate LPs in plain whitesleeves (not in a box). Bert Bradfield is probably at theorigin of these "issues" of a very limited kind. I wonderhow many copies were pressed. The "Monterey Jazz Festival"concert, 18Sep65, was also issued on three "Master SoundSystem" transcriptions LPs. Klaus Getting sent me the piec¬es of information, as he owns a copy of each of them. On 15 February 1973, during what was Duke El¬lington's penultimate European tour, he recorded anextended interview with British chat-shcw host Mi¬chael Parkinson before an invited audience at theBBC's television centre in London. The hour-longconversation, transmitted on 24 February 1973, wasa jqy, Ellington being on top form; liÿrt-heartedone moment, deeply serious the next, offering , over¬all, a fashinating glinpse into the day-to-dgy,year-by-year activities within his expansive musicalorbit. Louis Bel Isonwas on during this period, and I think he is the drummer du-ing the whole actual portion above. Although Duke is unmis-takenly present, the orchestra backgrounds sound like anybig band backing a vocal artist. Among contributors to thisalbum we found, not surprisingly, Mr. Jerry Valburn.

In this version, Ellington totally respects, minutely, Strayhom's original harmonisat¬ions (I can vouch for this, as I was fortunate, several years agp, in acquiring a photocopy of his orig¬inal manuscript of the piece) , but with his custernary brilliance of imagination and interpretation, El¬lington, throughout, introduces embellishments which are masterly and altogether delightful. New, to themusic:This opening 16-bar episode states the Strayhom theme with the minirron of decoration against a broken-chord continue in the left hand — gentle dynamics, crystal-clear piano tone, making superb use of thesustain pedal to enhance and develop the videly— voiced, attractive changes. This remains, to me, one ofEllington's finest, most sensitive performances, and it is interesting, i feel, to ccrrpare it with hiswell-known, well-loved version on ccrrmercial release. (Rattenbury )

DENE has re¬stored the source material to reach best possibleresult in fidelity and balance.
