Being the church can open many avenues to extending God’s care to others. By stating, “No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you’re welcome here!” we extend a hand out to everyone, letting them know that at Saint Stephens they have a place. However, it needs to be more than just saying it. If we all can begin to embody the words in that statement, then we truly show our care as the church. Our church missions also allow us the ability to reach out our hand to help the community and the world. By doing this, we also connect ourselves to the countless other people who reach out their hands to offer help. This week, 12 members of the church community are in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. These 12 are offering their hands as God’s hands to make a difference. Through your generous donations of pillows, sheets, and blankets toward the bunk bed ministry of Re- member, the entire congregation offers a helping hand. I also wonder, besides what we as the church do to reach out a hand to others, how might each of us as individuals do that? For each of us, it’s going to be and look different based on the gifts we have been given. These unique gifts enable us to address specific needs in the world. Each of those needs, at their core, call us to let love be genuine and to extend hospitality to strangers. It doesn’t matter how much or how little we reach out to help others; the point is that we do it. P.S. REACHING OUT A HAND

ITEMS AVAILABLE THIS WEEK

WAR, AGENT ORANGE, COFFEE, AND DREAMS COME TRUEDid you know that the coffee you drink at Coffee Hour is purchased by Bill Weber and donated to Saint Stephens in support of an organization called We Help War Victims? Bill is friends with Jim Harris, a man who has dedicated a large part of his life to selling coffee to raise funds to be used for the benefit of children who are innocent victims of war. In a land once hit hard by Agent Orange, there are many children with birth defects. (See photos at left.)Bill recently received this postcard from Jim:

“Hi Bill! Just a quick note to let you know that we’re putting your coffee money to good work. I leave later this afternoon for Laos - my 20th work trip in 18 years. But! my first trip in many years during the rainy season. It’s gonna be hot, hot, hot and wet, wet, wet. Take care & let all your coffee drinkers at church know that we’re still putting donations to good work. Cheers, Jim”

NOAH’S ARK CHAPERONES NEEDEDWant to beat the heat with a fun trip to Noah’s Ark? We’re looking for some adult volunteers to join us on our Youth Trip to Noah’s Ark on Tuesday, July 17, as chaperones! So if the idea of cooling down on the lazy river or hurtling down a water slide on an inner tube sounds like a great way to spend a summer day, call the office and let us know you’ll join the outing as one of our adult chaperones. 715.536.7322.

SHEET SETS, PILLOWS, AND BLANKETS! OH MY!Thank you to everyone who donated sheet sets and pillows for us to take with us to the Re-Member Mission Trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota as our gift from Saint Stephens. Our group left early Saturday morning, on June 30, with a beautiful mountain of pillows and sheets crammed into every available space ... 58 sheet sets, 27 pillows, and 4 blankets, to be exact! No, we didn’t top the overwhelming response of last year, but the recipients of these gifts will be blessed!

What a wonderful gift from the congregation of Saint Stephens! We know you couldn’t all come on the Mission Trip with us, but this is a great way that we all can feel we’ve made a contribution to helping.

As you know, due to the incredible poverty of this region, many families do not have adequate sleeping facilities on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Some of us will be building bunk beds on this Mission Trip, so it’s going to be amazing to be able to outfit their new beds beautifully.

We can’t wait to share our experiences at the reservation with all of you when we return.

SPECIAL MUSIC NEEDEDWe are still looking for musical talent to fill about five slots on our music calendar for the summer! Can you grace one of our worship services with special music? Whether you sing, play the guitar, play the piano, or have another musical talent, we’d love you to bless us with your musical gifts. Please contact Jim Bjorklund, our Music Director, to sign up for a worship service. You can email Jim at [email protected] or call the church office 715.536.7322 to leave a message about when you would like to provide special music and Jim will call you back to schedule/confirm.

HOME IMPROVEMENT & SCRIPAre you doing any home improvement projects this summer? Whether it’s a small thing like installing a new faucet or a huge project like building a new garage; perhaps you need a new Dewalt cordless drill to construct a fence or a chainsaw to clear up some trees or brush; it might be that you’re freshening up rooms with a new coat of paint; or maybe you’re buying a new weed wacker or riding lawnmower ... if you’ll be making those purchases from Menards, Ace Hardware, or Fleet Farm, then you can use Scrip and earn a nice little bonus for Saint Stephens at the same time! Talk to the Scrip sellers. They have some denominations in stock, and they can order larger quantities and denominations for those bigger purchases.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETINGAs you know, your Church Council has been looking into additional options for a Capital Campaign for Saint Stephens, and we are now in a position to share those findings with the congregation and to call a Special Congregational Meeting for a vote on a new recommendation. We will hold that Special Congregational Meeting on Sunday, July 15. Please plan to worship with us and to stay immediately afterward to hear the recommendation of your Church Council and to vote.

NO WORSHIP ON JULY 4We will not have a worship service at 6:00 PM on Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4, as previously planned. A poll of normal Wednesday evening worship attendees revealed most were unable to attend on July 4, so worship has been canceled. Go celebrate Indepence Day with some food, friends, and fireworks!

MARRIAGE HELP AVAILABLE - DON’T GIVE UP YETRetrouvaille has helped couples at all stages of disillusionment or misery in their marriage. KIDS IN THE PARKST. STEPHENS “ TACO TUESDAY”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Our “Taco Tuesday” lunches at Stange’s Park on 3rd Street continue each Tuesday throughout the summer. Can you volunteer to help? Sign up on the kiosk in the Kuck Lounge or call Sally Woller at 715.536.9870 to volunteer.

We need people to “lead” each serving team and “worker bees” to help prepare the food and serve it in the park. We need three volunteers each week. Both adults and youth are encouraged to help! Leads will be responsible for picking up the Nesco (with the taco meat) and other food and taking it to the park.

We have “donation jars” placed on the Scrip table on Sunday mornings to receive cash or Scrip card donations to use for purchasing food for the meals if you would like to help with that. You can also make such donations in the church office.

Each Sunday before the serving date new volunteers unfamiliar with the process will meet with Carol Weber after Sunday worship service to go over questions and details.

Volunteers, you are a blessing!“Who doesn’t love a picnic in the park!”

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CONGREGATION: July 15, 2018

BALLOT

Congregational Resolution to Commence Capital CampaignTo welcome the future of Saint Stephens United Church of Christ, by fulfilling our responsibility to the life of this congregation, to dream of the future that is before us, to set an example for our community in hospitality, we will dedicate new resources to meet the urgent needs of our Church. Therefore, as outlined in the “Case for Support” done last fall and upon further due diligence of Campaign Companies, the Council recommends that Saint Stephens United Church of Christ conduct a 5-Year Capital Campaign to begin on September 9, to conclude on or about November 11, to address essential building repairs and upgrades, strengthen our ministries, and expand our mission, along with hiring Craig Loscalzo and “Generis” to lead and coordinate this Capital Campaign.

If approved, the Council recommends kicking off the Capital Campaign by utilizing a wonderful and generous bequest left for Saint Stephens by the Estate of Lylas Kanitz, and an additional smaller bequest left for Saint Stephens by the Estate of Dorothy Rahlf, funds that have been invested so they are earning dividends, valued at $222,477.76 as of March 31, 2018; along with the existing New Roof Fund, which had a current balance of $14,425 as of May 30, 2018; and the existing Organ Fund, which had a balance of $19,320 as of May 30, 2018; to hire Kulps of Stratford to replace the Sanctuary Roof and Parsonage/Garage Roof and to also order the New Organ.

This means we are investing the funds we currently have, as follows:

Invested Bequests $222,477.76New Roof Fund $ 14,425.00Organ Fund $ 19,320.00Total Available $256,222.76

The Sanctuary roof replacement is estimated at $127,000 and we have a very rough estimate of $36,000 for the parsonage and garage. Both costs are based on 75 Year Shingle Life. The New Organ cost is estimated at somewhere in the neighborhood of $100,00. We are continuing to review our options to make the best use of every dollar we spend. We are still working on getting proposals for upgrading the wiring in the Sanctuary, as well. Some very rough estimates are approaching the $100,000 range.

Estimate of needed funds to complete these large projects:

Sanctuary Roof $127,000 Parsonage/Garage Roofs $ 36,000 New Organ $100,000 Upgrading Wiring $100,000 Minimum Total Needed $363,000

By voting “YES” for this project, I am also stating that I will financially support and work on this campaign to help endure its success for the future or our Church.

By voting “NO” for this project, I understand that we will put projects on hold and plan for another method/process to achieve our long term goals

Vote by circling one of the following below:

YAY I vote FOR the above stated resolution.

NAY I vote AGAINST the above stated resolution.

The votes will be counted immediately and the results communicated to the Congregation.

In anticipation of our Special Congregational Meeting on July 15, we want everyone to have an opportunity to review and understand what we are proposing for the future of Saint Stephens. Here is the Resolution & Ballot we will be using that day. Feel to ask questions in advance of the meeting or during our July 15 meeting.

NURSERY HELPERS NEEDEDHave you ever thought of helping out in the nursery? If you love to snuggle on those little ones and can pass a background check, we’d love to have your help in nursery once or twice each month. Please contact Sally Woller at 715.921.2148 or call the church office at 715.536.7322.

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .God’s Tiny House

“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” The disciples were astounded and said, “Who can be saved?” Jesus said, “For people it’s impossible. For God all things are possible.” - Matthew 19:24-26

A camel squeezing through the eye of a needle is pure absurdity, something more befitting of Monty Python than Holy Scripture. How do we explain this?

Some say the Eye of the Needle was a low and narrow gate into Jerusalem, generally avoided by well-to-do camel-owners. To get through, you had to unload your

camel and make it crawl.

Good. Luck.

Others say “camel,” kamilos in Greek, was a second century typo on the word kamelos, “rope.” Getting a rope through a needle’s eye is less challenging than dragging a camel, but still tough. In either case the message is the same: the kingdom is for the small, the humble, those with miniscule egos and little or no baggage. The richer we are, the tighter the squeeze into God’s tiny house of heaven.

Disciples (then and now) logically ask, “who then can be saved” because most everyone (then and now) treats wealth as a blessing rather than a curse. At that point, Jesus has us right where he wants us to deliver the gospel: “For people it’s impossible, but for God all things are possible.”

In other words: It’s not possible to buy or earn our way into the kingdom or to shrink our ego by ourselves. Only grace can do that. Only grace can knock us off our high horse/camel and make us tiny enough for God. That’s the good news.

Prayer

Tiny God, today let me take a note from the hypothetical camel and fall on my knees, literally or figuratively, as a first step in becoming smaller and more like you. Amen.
