A Faith Journey

I think my title for this message may be redundant. The words "faith" and "journey" are in some ways synonymous.Where is God leading you? You don't have to be moving across the country or even from one house in Mattituck toanother, if you are walking with God, you are on some kind of a journey. I may resonate with this metaphor morethan people who have lived their whole lives in the same place because I have lived in so many places, but I wantto encourage you to think about your faith as a journey. If you are not progressing with God, if you're not goinganywhere, then your faith needs a check up.

God wants to lead us to a place we have not yet been. He may want to lead us to a place where we can forgivesomeone who has hurt us, or he may want to lead us to take on some risks that make us uncomfortable to thinkabout. One risk, might have to do with speaking about our faith to a friend, while another may be to take a publicstand for justice in one of the many areas of injustice happening in our nation. Another journey could be simplyfrom a standing posture to a kneeling one, as you develop a consistent pattern of prayer. That's not moving very far,but it might be one of the most difficult and challenging journeys of your life.

As Sandra and I make a long distance journey to a new ministry in California,I want to ask you to join us on the much shorter journey from standing tokneeling. Will you kneel with us in prayer? Will you covenant with us to prayfor each other? Sometimes I struggle with this shorter journey more thananything, but I believe we can hold one another before God and so I pray evennow, may the Lord bless you and keep you and may the Lord be kind andgracious to you, and may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and giveyou peace. Amen.

Love in Christ,John

Session Happenings

First of all, Session would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation of all of those who attended thechurch “town hall” meeting on Sunday, August 11, 2019. While an open dialogue can often be difficult and evenpainful, it is essential to the health and well-being of any church. We also appreciate your taking the time to sendus your comments/feedback via letters which were presented at our August 25th Stated Meeting of the Session ascorrespondence received.

One of the most frequent concerns heard was regarding the nominating committee - its makeup andprocess. While we were under the impression we were following correct procedure, our Committee on Ministryliaison, Pastor Paul Gaug (who moderated the August 11th meeting as well as our August 25th Session meeting)informed us at our August Session meeting that the Nominating Committee – its makeup and its process – fallsunder the congregation’s “privilege and power." Not Session’s nor the church pastor. He let us know that anychanges made to the process would require the Congregation’s approval, and these revised documents wouldbecome the revised bylaws of the church.

While we heard requests for dismantling the current committee at both the meeting and in letters, Paulrecommended that wouldn’t be the best course of action at this time. That said, the present session policy on thenominating committee process will be reviewed and an updated policy will be presented to the congregation fortheir approval.

Therefore, the Nominating Committee will be postponing its first meeting which had been scheduled forSeptember 11th to a date in mid-October (TBD). Postponing this meeting will also allow our interim minister,Pastor Robert Zemke, time here with us, as the pastor’s voice is also essential on this committee. This later datewill also give the congregation ample time to present their names for consideration of serving on our boards. Oncethis new meeting date is scheduled, it will be added to the church calendar, and we will then work on a date for theCalled Congregational Meeting and notices will go into the bulletin, etc.

Please know that we also plan to have another “town hall” type meeting once Pastor Robert Zemke hasbeen with us for a time to keep the communication going.

And speaking of Pastor Robert Zemke…we wanted to share the process of how he came to us. Paulexplained to us that the Session is the board that appoints an interim minister; that this is not a congregationaldecision. When Presbytery was made aware some time ago that we were going to be in need of an interim minister, they knew Pastor Zemke could be available for this position. Presbytery, well aware of the storm we are goingthrough, strongly believed/believes that Robert would be a good fit at MPC, capable of leading us through thisdifficult time when we are all wrestling with dividing issues.

Robert was also one of candidates interviewed during the previous pastoral search, not chosen simply

because of his lack of experience as a pastor, but very well liked by the committee. All seemed to fit into place andwe are trusting God’s hand in all of this. We look forward to welcoming Robert, his wife, Flavia and their children: Luisa (8), Benjamin (7) and Mariana (2)to our church family and pray for their smooth transition in their move to the North Fork. His first official day ofwork will be Wednesday, September 11 and his first Sunday preaching will be Sunday, September 15. We hopeyou will be able to join us on that day!

In the meantime, it is our prayer that we will all keep talking, praying, worshiping together, and loving oneanother as Jesus would have us do.

Blessings, Tammy Cavanaugh, ClerkOn behalf of the Session of the Mattituck Presbyterian Church

Stewardship/Generosity

Each September our minds turn toward the finish of one year and the beginning of the next. This is oftentrue in our personal lives but it is certainly true in our church life. As we review the successes and challenges ofthis year as a church family, we must also consider what we have done as caretakers of everything God has givento us: gifts, abilities, experiences, dreams and responsibilities.

In June of 2014 the Stewardship/Generosity Team was formed to help us all live more faithfully ascaretakers of our calling as a congregation. As we began to meet at that time, we eachreflected on God’s calling in our lives and discussed what it means to be stewards of all wehave, everything provided by a loving and generous God. What He asks in return is that weuse our gifts to teach the world about Him and serve others in His name. So with a gratefuland loving heart, we give back. It is our reaction to His generosity in our lives. He knowsthat we invest in what we care about the most. What DO we care about the most?

An added challenge for us this year is the upcoming search for a new pastor. Wetake comfort in knowing that God has a plan for us and for our church and will never leaveus alone. But as we continue to serve Him and be agents for Him in everything we say anddo, we should recognize the need to support our church and its programs and remain faithfulto its ministry. God needs our commitment and wants us to fully trust in Him. We surelywant the new pastor, already selected by God, to find a committed and loving church eagerto continue our work together.

We invite you to prayerfully consider how God is calling you to help with all that He plans to do as thisyear ends and the coming year begins. Do you have time? Do you have talent? And do you have treasures? Allthese are gifts given to you by God, the owner of everything, to be used for His work to impact this community andthis world!

If you have any questions or comments, please speak to any member of the team: Session members BobHarrington and Sheila Minor, Trustee Nancy Reeve and congregants Howie Hansen, Tom Hemmick and RuthanneWoodhull. Bookkeeper Janice Fliss often meets with us and is able to answer any financial questions you have.Stewardship/Generosity Team

Haiti Reports

Dental Program:January 10th 2019, six of us left Mattituck for Haiti. For one of us, my son in-law Pete, it was his first

mission trip. Pete fit in well with the rest of the travelers, was a big help and felt he got a lot out of the experienceand would like to go again. For me it was my 25th trip. Every trip, no matter what happens, I get a lot out of the experience and start planningto go again. I am sure Tom, Gregory, Jeff and Jasmine all got something out of the trip, for this was also a returntrip for all of them.

John 15:10 says “If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’scommands and remained in his love. I have told you this that my joy may be in you and that your joy may becomplete.” I sense by loving our neighbors in Haiti we are feeling the complete joy Jesus gives us. If anyone sensesa calling to travel to Haiti or would like more information about our trips you can contact me. I would love to talkto you about the experiences. A form must be filled out before September 1st if you are thinking of going. There isa deadline due to the need of well planned arrangements.

As for the dental program, it has come a long way. My first trip, I was overwhelmed. Meeting with Ernst

Abraham the director of Service Christian, I told him how I felt the dental care of most Haitians was a disaster inmy eyes. His response was; “What do we do in America?” I told him about hygiene and fluoride. His responsewas “Well?” So from there we started our hygiene program including fluoride. We peaked with 3000 children onthe program. We started out in the early years seeing about 800 patients a trip, extracting 3000 to 4000 teeth. As ofthe last trip we extracted only about 1500 teeth and restored many teeth.

Just another reminder about our January trip. You can not wait until the last minute. A form must be inbefore September 1st. There will also be 3 meetings all must attend in person or on Face Time.

Eye Care Program:

“The Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous”.Psalm 146:8

The eye care program in La Gonave, Haiti started in January of 2009. With the invitation from TomChristianson, I felt the Lord calling me to come to Haiti and bring the skills that I had just acquired from optometryschool.

Armed with my portable eye care equipment, sample eye drops from my closet, and donation glasses thatwere given to me by patients and members of the church, I took the 4 hour flight from JFK (NYC) to PAP (Port AuPrince-Haiti).

I had no idea what to expect when I stepped off the plane and walked onto the tarmac in the 80 degreedirect sunlight of the capital city.

My senses were overloaded with the bright colors of the ‘Tap-Tap’ taxis, the loud shouting of Haitianstrying to get my attention, the smell of cooking meat emanating from the makeshift grills of the street vendorsalong the road as we drove up the coast of Haiti and headed on the boat over to the Island of La Gonave.

La Gonave is a small island off the coast of Haiti that has a population of about eighty-eight thousandpeople, is about 287 square miles (1/2 the size of Nassau County) and has zero eye doctors.

When I arrived in La Gonave, the last time an eye doctor was on the island was about three years before, and it was Cuban Ophthalmology residents who were learning to do cataract surgery and practicing on the islandresidents for their first surgeries. After finding some exam equipment from the 1950s, combined with my nursing home equipment, I was ready tosee patients.

With the help of Tom translating, we were able to chaotically see about 300 patients in our first year. Wegave out all our glasses, ran out of medicine, and referred a handful of patients to Port Au Prince for cataractsurgery. But we still had lots of people who still needed to be seen and unfortunately, I ran out of time andmaterials. I felt good helping, but unfulfilled.

Over time and a few trips, I watched Dr. Greg Doroski (our dentist) and noticed how he had developed asystem to quickly and effectively move the patients thru the waiting area, to clinic and get them treated in anefficient manner with no chaos in the waiting area. In the Haitian culture, when services are being provided, eithermedical or dispersion of food, if you are not first in line, you might not eat or get served. So the normal socialconstruct of waiting your turn in line like here in the USA, does not apply in Haiti. But in Dr. Greg’s clinic, therewas order and civility. I slowly implemented this system of order with tickets

The two most important eye difficulties in Haiti are blur without glasses and glaucoma. In order to screen these two diseases out faster, I brought down in hard roadie cases, two instruments that I usedaily here in the states. One is a called an autorefractor, which will measure a patients eye and tell me what theirglasses prescription should be. The second instrument I brought down is called a non contact tonometer, a.k.a.-thepuff test, which measures for glaucoma.

With these two instruments, I am able to see patients at rapid speed, and our last two trips, we were able tosee at least 800 to 1000 patients in a trip. By seeing that many patients in the same amount of time, it has given me

immense satisfaction of being able to help the island of La Gonave, which has no other eye doctors. We should give glory to God that he has provided us with these items to help so many people like in the Psalm.Jeff Williams

Letters From Our Missions

Dear Pastor John and MPC:Last week I was getting my hair cut, and as I was leaving, I noticed an old guy sitting down, wearing a B-17

bomber hat. He looked old enough, so I asked him if he was in World War II. "Fifteen missions as a ball turretgunner." I was thrilled to meet him. I have read a great deal about those bombers, and I have always beenfascinated that a guy would get under a bubble in the plane with only Plexiglas to protect him from flak and50-millimeter bullets. He was still sharp, and we talked for a while. He described the scariest part of being underthe plane was the fact that if it was shot down, he needed one of his crewmates to let him out or he went down withthe ship. I thanked him for his service. In the 40s, the fatherless birthrate was under 3%. So even though these boys went to war at 18, 97% of them had afather at home to show them how to be a man. Today only 48% of our young men make it to the age of 18 withboth of their parents still at home. I have read close to 30 books on World War II. I often wonder if France wouldbe speaking German now if the fatherless rate in the 40s was what it is today.

I was recently in Colorado working with a group of Christians who are trying to put together a plan tostrengthen the family in America. One new statistic really shocked me. It addresses one of the biggest felt needs ofthe church. Churches are very concerned that once youth go away to college, they rarely return to church. So,churches are putting extra effort in their youth programs. But this new statistic seems to say that we should putmore time, money, and attention into a marriage ministry. A millennial with married parents is 78% more likely togo to church. Interesting, isn’t it?

Thank you for investing in this ministry to the fatherless. God is using His people to reach into the heartsand minds of lost kids and giving them hope, direction, and a future. The multi-generational nonsense is beingstopped in this generation.Sincerely, John CraggExecutive Director Long Island Youth Mentoring

You Can Make a Difference!

John's Place Mattituck will be opening its doors and we need your help! This is the 16th year that our church andother churches are providing a safe home and meal to our homeless guests every Thursday night, from November 1- April 1st. Every second Thursday (except in November when we prepareThanksgiving) MPC’s own Jeanne Berliner will be overseeing preparation of thedinners. Advent Lutheran, Redeemer Episcopal and Community Christian Fellowshipwill continue to oversee the other three Thursdays. We need you! Volunteers canhelp in various ways:

Our biggest need is overnight help! We are hoping that we can build a team of

people to spend just one or more nights during the season. Please consider and maybeyou can recruit a friend to join you! The majority of homeless we serve are men so wewould be grateful to have men volunteer. We encourage folks to have fellowship with guests. They could always use a goodlistener!
