A Public Affair Rabbi Ari Lamm, William Fischman Resident Scholar

In Chazal’s parlance, the holiday of Shavuot is known as ‘Atzeret. This is an ancient moniker – Jose-phus reports it as the popular, traditional name for the occasion in his own day.1 What is it about this name – typically rendered in English as “convocation” – that encapsulates the essence of Shavuot?2 In the Talmud Bavli, the primary valence assigned to the term ‘Atzeret is impermissibility.3 That is, any day named “’Atzeret” is a day, by definition, upon which work is prohibited. This understanding of ‘Atzeret, however, is not to be found anywhere in Tannaitic literature.4 Instead, the early rabbinic sages understood the term to denote an ingather-ing of the Jewish people. For example: “‘On the eighth day it shall be for you an ‘Atzeret’ (Num. 29.35) – this verse gathers [the Jewish people] in (‘atzeru) from leaving Jerusalem.” 5 In this midrash, the word ‘Atzeret is utilized to demonstrate that the Jewish people must stay to-gether in one place. In short, our early sages viewed ‘Atzeret as another word for “community.” It seems, then, that in referring to Shavuot as ‘Atzeret, our attention is called to a rather peculiar feature of Shavuot: its public nature. After all, con-sider how Shavuot is celebrated. Rather than un-dertaking any individualized observance, as is typi-cal of other holidays – eating matzah on Pesach or shaking the four species on Sukkot – we mark Sha-vuot by engaging in communal activity only; name-ly, by bringing to the Temple the shetei ha-lehem, the two loaves of leavened bread prepared for

this occasion6. Thus, Shavuot is unique among the major holidays of our calendar in that it does not manifest at all at the individual level. Instead, on Shavuot, we celebrate as a nation, and as a nation only. Now, in Tanach, Shavuot is characterized consistent-ly as a “harvest” holiday, in the sense that it is a time for us, as a people, to look back upon the pre-vious year of parnasah – of sustenance – and give thanks to the Almighty for providing for us. As is well known, however, Shavuot possesses an addi-tional association. It is, traditionally, the anniversary of the Revelation at Sinai. Given the relentlessly communal character of Shavuot – embodied in the name ‘Atzeret – there could be no more appropri-ate time for this event to have occurred. After all, the Torah is the common, eternal inheritance of the Jewish People as a whole. It belongs not to any single individual, but rather to us all. This is a great privilege, to be sure. But it simultane-ously imposes upon us a great national responsibil-ity to study and safeguard the Torah. May we mer-it, this year, to rise to the occasion.

——————— 1 Antiquities 3.252 2 Indeed, Chazal were well aware that the holiday could have assumed other names. See Mekhilta de-Rashbi to Exodus 34.22. 3 Bavli Hagigah 9a 4 See for example Sifre Devarim 135, and compare Midrash ha-Gadol to Deuteronomy 16.8, and Mekhil-ta de-R. Yishmael, Pischa 9. 5 Sifre Bamidbar 151. 6 See Leviticus 23.17.

MARNIE & SCOTT BLACK have been members of The Jewish Center since they married in 2003.

Their two children, Shoshana, 9, and Asher, 7, who attend the West End Day School, and The Ramaz School, respec-

tively, are both active participants at the shul.

A graduate of Columbia College and NYU Law School, Scott began his legal career clerking for The Honora-

ble Milton Pollack in the Southern District of New York, and then spent six years as an associate at Wachtell, Lipton,

Rosen & Katz. From 2004 to 2010, Scott served in various senior roles in the Division of Enforcement of the Securities

and Exchange Commission’s New York office. For the past five years, Scott has served as the General Counsel and

Chief Compliance Officer at Hudson Bay Capital Management, a New York-based hedge fund adviser. Scott has been

involved in the Lawyers Division of UJA and currently sits on The Jewish Center’s Administrative Committee.

Marnie attended Barnard College, spending her junior year at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Following

graduation, Marnie began a career in public relations, spending 10 years as the Head of Communications at MTV: Mu-

sic Television and the past four years at AMC Networks, where she is currently the head of Public Relations, Talent

Relations, Special Events, Photography, and Awards Campaigning for AMC and SundanceTV, where she works on

high-profile and award-winning shows including “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” “Rectify,” and “The Walking Dead.”

Marnie is very involved in a number of non-profit organizations, including UJA Federation, where she sits on the Board

and also serves on the Jewish Community Development Task Force under the Commission of Jewish Identity and Re-

newal, and the Women’s Executive, Entertainment, Broadcast, and Tov B'Yachad Committees. Marnie is also a mem-

ber of the Executive Leadership Council of Manhattan Jewish Experience.

Prior to her career in public relations, Marnie was a professional opera singer. Scott ran the first of his 13 mar-

athons at the age of 8, and remains one of the youngest runners to have ever completed the New York City Marathon (a

minimum age requirement has since been implemented).

Marnie and Scott feel blessed to be part of such a rich a beautiful Jewish community (as evidenced by

Marnie’s refusal to ever leave the Upper West Side and Scott’s refusal to live more than five blocks in either direction

from The Jewish Center) and are deeply humbled to receive this honor.
