PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

High Holiday Seating We know both membership renewal and seating may be more stressful this year for some of our valued members. It is for us as well. BAYT staff and volunteers are doing their very best to accommodate everyone safely. The considerations that go into planning for the high holidays this year are multifaceted and continue to evolve. The need to socially distance, comply with everchanging Provincial regulations, availability of ba’al tefillah and ba’al tokeah and costs (tent rentals cost thousands). When we started planning in July, we considered separate seating for seniors and others who may be health compromised. At the time, medical opinion was that offered no known reduction to COVID exposure. Today, new COVID cases are tracking low in Ontario and are concentrated among people between the ages of 25-39. New cases in York Region are tracking at or near zero on a daily basis. We are working to provide more separation for seniors and those who may be health compromised. We will let you know next week how this may evolve. As of this writing, seating for the late minyanim, Kol Nidre and Neilah is full in the Chuppah Garden (maximum capacity 75 but working on adding 25 more seats) and the main shul women’s section (maximum capacity 81). If you are not a senior citizen or otherwise health compromised and are registered for the late minyanim, Kol Nidre or Neilah in the Chuppah Garden or main shul women’s section, please consider an alternative minyan seat assignment so we can adjust our plans. Please send an email to Avital Sandler by August 31. Seats are available for earlier minyanim in all minyanim including the Chuppah Garden and main shul women’s section. Seats are available for all minyanim, Kol Nidre and Neilah in the main shul men’s section Turk Family Beit Medresh and Perlis Hall.

Security Alan Jaff and Aaron Rosenberg advise of an acute shortage of volunteers to staff our Safety Team for the holidays. Familiarity makes our members the most effective option to help ensure the safety and security of our community. Please contact Alan, Aaron or Karen Zilberberg in the office if you can help out. Somewhat related, there may be paid opportunities for members to work ongoing weekday shifts at our parking lot doors. If you may be interested, please contact Alan, Aaron or Karen.

Shabbat Shalom

Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

What changes should I make in Selichot if I say them without a minyan? We recite Selichot in the days leading up to Rosh haShanah and Yom Kippur, as well as on fast days. This year, Ashkeazim begin on the night after Shabbat September 12. One may recite these prayers in private, although prayer in a group is always preferable. One who prays alone should omit the Aramaic portions of Selichot. An individual is not eligible to recite the portions of Selichot which list the 13 attributes of Divine mercy (Shemot 34:6-7), but many authorities rule that an individual may recite them with the notes of the trop, as though reading a verse from the Torah rather than a prayer. On the first night of Selichot, we try to recite Selichot midway through the night (1:13 AM this year), in order to link them with the merit of the preceding Shabbat. However, for the rest of Selichot some suggest it is better not to recite them midway through the night, but instead to recite them early in the morning, before first light (72 minutes before sunrise, according to BAYT). One who did not recite them that early may still recite them after dawn. Note that one who recites Selichos after sunrise should alter the wording of those lines which claim to be reciting Selichot "at night". (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 565:5; Mishneh Berurah 565:12, 581:1; 581:4; Kaf haChaim 581:26; Aruch haShulchan Orach Chaim 581:4, 13; Yabia Omer 1:Orach Chaim 35; Yalkut Yosef 581:14; Chashukei Chemed to Yoma 22a)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

REOPENING UPDATE: B"H, minyan attendance has been steadily increasing as our members are becoming more comfortable with davening under the current conditions. But as minyanim continue to fill up, it is important that if you register for a minyan, ( that you keep that appointment, since you may be depriving someone else the opportunity to daven at the minyan. Also, on a sparse day, the minyan may be relying upon you to make the minyan. If you decide to not attend, please go back to the online signup (below) and delete your name from the list. Please register for all Shabbos and weekday minyanim using the "Sign Up Genius" app. Please click HERE, and you can decide for the entire week which services you'd like to participate in. Please note that priority for minyan registration is currently for BAYT members only. If you are a non-member, please do not register until Friday after-noon, at whichtime you are welcome to register if there is space in the minyan.

Wishing you a beautiful and healthy Shabbos,

Rabbi Daniel Korobkin

KELIM MIKVAH UPDATE: The online registration form for reserving a spot for the Kelim Mikvah has been updated and it is available on Wed 9 am to noon. We allow affiliate members to register, for a $5 fee. Pending availability, the Mikvah is also open to non-members for a $10 fee. To register, go to: https://www.bayt.ca/form/keilim-mikveh-use.html

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SPECIAL REMINDER: SEATING IS NOW OPEN FOR HIGH HOLIDAYS We very much appreciate your indulgence and understanding during these challenging times. At BAYT, we are committed to providing each of our members with a safe and meaningful prayer service over the Yamim Noraim (High Holy Days). We are also committed to ensure that every single adult member is accommodated for a seat in shul. We will also do our best to accommodate your children 10 years old and above, provided that they can sit with you during services. ALL minyanim require a seat selection form to be completed. We ask that if you are requesting a seat, that you abide by that request. If for any reason you make alternate plans, please notify the office so that we can free your seat for another member. Because of COVID-19, High Holy Day seating will follow an adjusted format. For two weeks (Aug. 17-30), seating will be open to full members only, after which we will begin selling tickets to guests and the general public. Seats may be reserved for family members from age 10 and above. Family members may be seated in a group “bubble” within the Main Shul, the other minyanim will have open spaced out seating. Minyanim will take place in 4 locations for all services: (1) The Main Shul, (2) Perlis Hall, (3) Turk Family Bais Medrash/Rebbetzin Judy Taub Hall and (4) The Chuppah Garden outdoors. Shacharis & Mussaf will take place in 2 shifts - an early minyan (approx.. 7 am) and a late minyan (approx.. 9:45 am). Out of a concern for your safety and limiting your potential exposure, we are endeavoring to keep all morning minyanim on Rosh Hashanah to 2-3 hours, and on Yom Kippur to 3-4 hours. When selecting seats: Please choose your preferred minyan location and time Please enter a 1st and a 2nd choice in the Notes section (Main Shul has 2 request boxes for seat selection). We will do our very best to accommodate your first choice. Each Minyan has been spaced out to allow at least 6 feet of spacing between each chair. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis, including within the Main Shul where it is possible to select your seat. Each minyan will have a monitor to ensure the space is maintained.

PLEASE NOTE: THE CHUPPAH GARDEN & WOMEN’S BALCONY ARE NOW FULL FOR THE LATE MINYAN & KOL NIDREI/NEILAH

Please don’t select this option at this point. ( We have now added additional seating for women at the back of the Men's Section of the Main Shul. If you requested a seat in

the balcony, but would prefer this location please email Avital at [email protected] )

Please bring your own machzor. If you need help in procuring a machzor, please contact the office. In compliance with Ontario law, masks must be worn at all times.

GUEST TICKETS WILL BE ON SALE FROM MONDAY—PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE Thank You for your cooperation during these unprecedented times

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SELECT ONLY ONE OF

THE MINYANIM OPTIONS.

BAYT Crisis Campaign

Every week more and more of our members are stepping up to assist us in the Crisis Campaign. Many of you inspire us, not only with your generosity but your very kind words. This past week a donor wrote us, “when the shul community suffers, we all suffer”. There is very little to add when a member truly understands the seriousness of our financial situation and want to make a difference. The fundraising committee is working very hard to ensure that we not only meet the goals we have set out to raise, but that we are making sure your donation dollars are being used correctly. When you pledge, we see it as vote of confidence in our committee. We are truly grateful. For those of you still considering to pledge or are waiting for a phone call, please be proactive. The fundraising committee is working diligently to get to all of our members, but if you want to discuss your pledge or have questions, please reach out to us.
