April 2011 TO WIN! TO BUILD! TO SEND! The joy is in the journey! LUTHERAN CHURCH Renewed in Christ! Alleluia! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This year Easter is on Sunday, April 24th. The date of Easter is set as the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox. (The date of the Vernal Equinox is March 21.) The result is that the earliest date for Easter is March 22 and the latest is April 25—so this year Easter is almost as late as it can be. When it comes to Easter, the date is not as important as the spirit of the holi- day. Easter is a celebration of new life. Renewal -new life- is what we need, what we long for, isn’t it? Even when things are going relatively well for us, we know deep down that there is need for more . . . That something more is life in God. Life in our Savior, Jesus. In the blessed and glorious season of Easter, we shout, “Alleluia!’ and pray that we, too, will experience resurrection in our own lives—the resurrection of hope, the resur- rection of meaningful and purposeful living, the resurrection of caring and lov- ing—and being loved. God promises always to be with us—the risen Christ defeats death so that we might live . . . forever! Renewal, resurrection comes not just at the end of life, but daily, in remembrance of our baptism, in the knowledge of what God has done and continues to do for us. I pray new life for you and me—for us and our loved ones, for our community, our nation, for the world. The gift is held out—remember what God does for you, and it’s yours! May you know the indescribable joy and deep peace of being renewed, day by day, in the love and grace of God in Christ. One of the best and biggest mission fields we have is our school. The Open Arms Christian Child Development Center includes more than 400 children and their families. Mission and Ministry Servant Leaders Group Update Throughout March, the MMSLG concentrated on nearer term planning and guidance for 2012 for church operations and budget process. We oriented our two new members Johnnie Stubbs and Todd Klopp on our constitutional charter as approved by the congregation, and our processes and policies en-acted in the year of our operations as a leadership team. We also meet for an evening of food and fellowship with the nearly totally new Open Arms Board of Governance. Later we met to discuss guidance regarding 2012 budget plan-ning guidance for Open Arms with new BOG Chair Brad Fisher. We also dis-cussed overall church fiscal planning guidance with respect to professional staff benefits, projected Open Arms revenue from increased student enroll-ments and new classes, OSWLC growth and giving projections, and projected costs of mortgage, possible big expenses. We approved establishment of a $60,000 capital improvements reserve in 2012 budget for unanticipated big expense items. MMSLG is now soliciting church members to examine the nature and duties and responsibilities of a new Associate Pastor projected to be included in 2012 budget. We also began to transition back to our more traditional charter of developing strategic long term plans and programs for the overall operations of the church, which will be reviewed and guidance will be sought from church members in our next planned congregational meeting.

7:30 pm LENTEN WORSHIP—Wednesdays - April 6 and 13 Christ in the Strangest Places– 7:30 pm Worship Ser vices

Two tablets of stone, a few vessels of oil, simple markings, a small army, a remote field, a solemn oath—these are some of the strangest people, places and things through which God revealed himself to his people. Leadership of the services will rotate between Pastor Mann, Pastor Wiechmann, and Pastor Peterson. Join us for dinner and worship April 6 and 13 as we continue to prepare our hearts for Easter.

REV. ART UMBACH TO BE GUEST PREACHER —APRIL 10 Rev. Art Umbach, our Mission and Ministry Facilitator for the Central Region of the Southeastern District will be at Our Savior’s Way to preach the sermon on Sunday, April 10, 2011.

Our Savior’s Way and Open Arms - Partners in Christ

Two recent events have been very successful in uniting our school fami-lies and the congregation in ministry and worship. The Family Chapel and Lenten Dinner on Ash Wednesday was attended by 180. The 11:00 am Wor-ship Service with the Open Arms chil-dren singing on March 13 was at-tended by 450. (Normal attendance for that service is 250.)

We look forward to more opportunities to join together as a community of families united by Christ.

During the Easter season, it is en-couraging to see both new and fa-miliar faces at our worship services. Throughout the year, many of you already support the con-gregation with your time, talent and financial contributions but greater par-ticipation is always welcome. We en-courage you to enroll in our electronic giving program. Please contact the church office for details.

GOOD FRIDAY ‘TRE ORE’ PRAYER VIGIL AND EVENING SERVICE OF DARKNESS

GOOD FRIDAY PRAYER VIGIL April 22 Noon—3:00 pm

Jesus spent 3 hours on the cross. On Good Friday, April 22, plan to stop by church for an hour of prayer and reflection. The Good Friday Prayer Vigil will begin at noon and last until 3:00

pm. From noon until 1:00 pm, we will walk through the “Stations of the Cross”. You can come for the whole time or for part of it. Each hour of prayer will be-gin by drawing attention to the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. There will be time for Scripture Reading, individual and group prayer, and silent meditation. “Be still and know that I am God.” --Psalm 46:10 GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE OF DARKNESS April 22 7:30 pm “Tenebrae” is the name given to the Good Friday Service. It is a service of darkness held on the Friday before Easter. This year the service takes place at 7:30 pm on Friday, April 22nd. The service is a moving journey as we re-member the seven last words of Jesus on the cross. The increasing gloom symbolizes the approaching death of our Savior, until finally the church is left in total darkness. If you have never attended the “service of darkness” be sure to make it a part of your Easter observance this year (And bring a friend!).

Japan Relief Donations through OSW

Through March 18th, donors have given over $250,000 from the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod to be used for relief in Japan following the earthquake and the tsunami. We at OSWLC have contributed $930.25 to be used for immediate needs such as food, water, and shelter, and then for rebuilding. We will continue to receive gifts for this needy cause; make your checks payable to OSWLC and write in "Japan relief" in the memo column.

NEW LEADERS NEEDED For Doing Life Together

Our groups are growing! We have more and more groups and more people participating in these groups. What a great blessing! But it also presents to us a challenge to us to not let our groups get too large. The ideal group which allows everyone to fully participate is between 5-15 people and a group that has room to

invite a friend. If you have a desire to lead a small group or to learn about leading a group, I would love to help you get started. Contact me, Pastor Pe-terson, [email protected]. For your convenience a complete listing of all our groups is posted on the church website under “Doing Life Together” small groups. The website is www.OSWLC.org.

A STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT – Living the New Life Rev. Dr. Eric G. Peterson

This month we celebrate Easter and the victory of Christ over sin, death and the power of evil. All who believe in Christ are given eternal life. This is God’s promise. But what is eternal life? The Bible is intentionally vague in its description of heaven. All we know is that there will be no more sin, or death, no more pain and suffering, and no more sorrow. These things will be gone forever. We also know that we will not want for anything because our needs will be met in God’s perfect love for us. What is clear about heaven is the relationships we will share and how we will live together. Jesus said, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent (John 17:3).” In heaven we will experience eternal life which is life with God. Again in Revelations it says, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God (Rev. 21:3).” In heaven we will not only know God and Jesus Christ and the love God has for us but our lives will focus God’s will. Are you waiting to die so you can experience eternal life? You don’t have to! Eternal life begins today through our faith in Christ and our baptism. Make the Easter choice to share your life with God now and to live with Him. You can do this by daily setting aside a time to be with God in prayer (where you can speak to God) and by spending time in meditation on God’s Word (where God can speak to you). In heaven you will be surrounded by God’s love and the love of others. Make the Easter choice to fill your spirit with God’s love by learning more and more about Christ’s love each day. As you will in heaven, surround yourself with the love of the saints now. Make a commitment to be in Christian fellowship and join a small group ministry. Make worship a priority in your life.

Finally, in heaven we will joyfully do God’s will because it is life. Make the Easter choice to experience the joy of heaven by seeking God’s will to be in your life today. ”He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true (Rev.21:5).”

Learn About Lyme Disease!! Thursday May 5, 7:00 - 9:30 PM May is Lyme Awareness Month. Did you know that Loudoun County has the highest rate of Lyme disease in Virginia and third highest in the United States? According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 200,000 people may be infected with Lyme disease annually. The Parish Nurses of Our Savior Way are presenting a free Lyme Disease Aware-ness program for the county on Thursday, May 5, 2011 from 7:00 - 9:30 PM. The program features local expert Samuel Shor, MD, FACP, plus a special screening of the award-winning documentary Under Our Skin. Given the descriptive nature of the movie we ask that only adults attend.

Dr. Shor is a member of Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell 's Lyme Disease Task Force. Kathy Meyer, another Task Force member said, "It's critical to learn what Lyme Disease can look like in later stages. Many people, too often chil-dren, never see the tick or notice a rash. Later on, when they become ill, doctors may not think of Lyme, or tests may be misleading.” Meyer will join Dr. Shor, the Parish Nurse Ministry, and representatives of the National Capital Lyme Dis-ease Association to answer questions and provide reference information. Details are available at: http://oswlc.org/events/lyme .

Small Group Leader’s Huddle Our next small group leader’s huddle is Sunday April 11th from noon to 2:00 pm. During the huddle we will have the chance to share with each other how our groups are doing, as well as share thoughts and ideas about how to make our groups stronger. In addition we will spend some time reflecting on growing our small group ministry and our next steps. As always, lunch will be served.

A program of World Vision, this will be our 5th Famine. The Fam-ine is open to all kids in grades 7-12. It is a time of fellowship, fun,

and world hunger awareness. Most people can go safely without food for 30 hours, but you should carefully consider any medical condi-tions, and parents must sign consent forms allowing fasting. Kids may participate without fasting. The youth set a goal of $6000, a portion of which will aid victims in Japan. Volunteers are needed for the event. Email Ray at Raymond@oswlc,org.

EASTER BREAKFAST

April 24 7 am—11:00 am

The youth fund will benefit from the monetary dona-tions made to the

Easter Breakfast, so we need all fami-lies to help out by bringing egg casse-roles-your recipe or ours. We will also need fruit and bagels. The congrega-tion will also be asked to provide food. A coordinator is needed to lead a team to plan the food and logistics for the event and to organize the family par-ticipation. The kids always have a good time helping with these events. Please contact Ray to lead the event or to be part of the team.
