t was the battle students have waited all yearo see and it was well worth it. DORM WARS

2006 rocked Lee Uni-versitys campus on theevening of Monday,February 20th reminding

veryone of how tough you have to be to be theest. Weeks and weeks of planning went into

he event with every Resident Director workingor hours to make sure that this years DORM

WARS would be better than ever before.Students arrived at the Walker Arena around00 PM, dressed in everything from odd, mis-

matched pirate uniforms to perfectly matchingorm t-shirts. Some had banners, others were

overed with face paint and glitter. Residents ofach hall sat together at the marked positions onhe stands. At the end of the gymnasium twoumbo screens had been set up, prepared to giveudents the best up-close view of what wasoing on.University President Dr. Paul Conn opened

with a word of prayer before the microphonewas returned to the emcee of the evening, Phil

Everyone Makes MistakesLearning to be a better newspaper...

Everyone makes mistakes, even in the newspaperbusiness. Typos are sent to print, names are mixed up, anddecisions turn out not to be so good.

Im sitting in the computer lab at the HumanitiesCenter as I type out a few hundred words for my first apol-ogy as editor of The Lee Headlines. Having just returned

from the Office of Student Life and meeting with Dr. WaltMauldin, I have come to realize my mistakes and I am hereto say I am sorry.

Simply put, The Lee Headlines failed in its questto gain funding from Lee, although it may not be the last timethe staff will try. The meeting, however, was worth more thana deal to print 800 copies per week. The meeting was alearning experience and reviewing the mistakes Ive madehelped me realize that.

In previous copies of The Lee Headlines westated that we would be open to printing anything, withoutconsent from the Lee administration. Id like to clarify that.

In previous issues, we printed words we should not have. Idlike to ask for forgiveness for that.

To remedy these problems and make an honest effortto prevent them from happening, Id like to set a list of guide-lines for The Lee Headlines. The guidelines, which will bediscussed and decided upon by our staff and frequent writerswill also be presented to the Lee faculty for review and com-ment. I would like to remind readers that the Headlinesremains an independent campus news source, but we will

strive to keep a clean act, creating a paper suitable for all toread. We want to challenge, not offend. We want to encour-

age and strengthen the faith of our readers while providingthem with fair and balanced news.

We plan to print our guidelines in an upcoming is-sue so that readers may understand precisely what we aredoing and may provide us with valuable feedback.

From the way we have presented the Headlinesto students, we have made it seem as if we will print anything

submitted to us. On the contrary, we will accept any materialfrom students and staff for review. Most articles will be

printed, although some may have to be edited. We still planto print opinion articles, but we will try our best to present abalanced viewpoint in the paper.

One of our early issues contained some words thathave been upsetting to people at Lee. I apologize sincerely

for our mistake and pray that we may improve the paper inthe future.

Our goal is simple: we want to provide a weeklynewspaper filled with content that everyone can enjoy andlearn from, even faculty. We hope that our readers will stickwith us and pray for us as we start out on this journey.

Kimberly Bogle, one of the cabinet mem-bers, commented that the drama did a good job of giving visual pictures for the girlsto understand. The last scene of the dramafeatured the main character, played byKelly Phelan, walking down the middle ofthe room in a wedding dress, symbolizingthe bride of Christ. All of the girls cheeredand clapped when Kelly reached the frontof the room.

After the drama, all 178 girls chose tocommit to saving themselves before

Special thanks for this article goes to the following individuals:Heather Rawleigh (for getting quotations from the champions),Andi Draddy, Kara Hawley and Karen Hawley (for use of theircameras and memory cards), Christopher Isenhour (for use oftechnology), and Cara Rogers (for information regarding score

or any remnant of green spam) was first to be completely done with their

inner and back across the baseline was declared the winner. One other

ule: the players hands must only be used to hold the plate in place.Once five heats had been completed, emcee Cook called out ticket num-

ers and gave away several prizes, ending with a $50 cash prize. By the

me the prizes had been awarded, the resident assistants in training had set

p the arena for the second game: a shopping cart race. The race started with teams behind the baseline once again, ready to have

ne member push a rider around in a shopping cart. The players would fly

he cart to the far end of the gymnasium, swirl around a cone, and comeack. Once fully back across the baseline the previous rider would jump

ut and another rider would hop in. The fastest team to have all members

de and push the cart around the cone won the round. Only one accidentccurred, and, thanks to safety guidelines, all participants had helmets on.

At the conclusion of eight separate heats of the shopping cart race, Cook

merged back onto the floor calling out more ticket numbers. Five giftertificates were presented to several blessed winners and another $50 cash

rize was presented. Following the prizes, it was time for the third and

    nal game: the obstacle course.

Each team player had to make it through the course in the correct ordernd according to the directions, lest points be taken away for penalty. After

pinning around a bat several times, participants would hop through a

eries of tires before crawling through a tube. They would then have towing on a rope from one platform to the next before running as fast as

hey could to make it over a steep wall. The first team with all players to

omplete the course won the round. After eight fun-filled heats, the emceennounced something unexpected. Two more teams had been formed to

ompete against each other: The RAs and the RDs. The RA team com-

rised of Jaimie Butler, Aimie, David Vargas, Harley Studder, Candaceox, and Jimmy Harper. The RD team included Aubrie Gruber, Joe Marti-

ex, Greg White, Kim Blackaby, Murl Dirksen, and Cara Bain. Both teams

ew through the obstacle course and then Cook returned to center court.

ive more gift certificates were distributed to random winners and then therand cash prize if $200 was given away.

Seconds later the scores had been tallied and it was time to announce thewinners. First, Cook awarded the spirit award to Nora Chambers. Cookalled Brinsfield Rows team out and awarded them third place. Davis Hall

was then awarded second. The crowd of students held their breath and

waited in silence to discover who took first place...Suddenly screams and cheers erupted from across the arena as Phil Cook

bstacle [course], I didnt do very well myself, buthe other girls were so great that I think thats the

art that won it for us! I know that the actual team

was only seven girls but having the rest of theCross Hall girls there to cheer us on helped tre-

    mendously!! Cross is Boss!!!!

Another Cross team member, Kristina Weston,

ays, Dorm Wars was an amazing experience forme!! Being on the winning team was definitely

wesome, though just being on the Cross Hall

eam was more than worth it! Our dorm has areat community where the girls just really like

ach other, and I think that significantly affected

ur victory. The team was pretty tight, even if wead only met a week or two before. And the rest of

he girls were so supportive and cheered us on

whole-heartedly!! I know I felt a desire to do myery best and to win because I love the Cross girls

    o much!! I was definitely nervous... I didn't want

o let down all the girls, or do anything totally

tupid. I knew we had a chance to win and Iwanted to do my best. But I knew I was going to

o do my best no matter what. My favorite part of

he event was definitely the obstacle course. Iwish I could do it again- rug burns on the knees

nd everything!! It was certainly a big adrenaline

ush to just push myself through it and I loved it.he course was really great, but I guess a close

second would be jumping on the #1 stand andtouching that trophy!! When the announcer said

"They said they were the boss and they were

right" I didn't hear anything else- we were all too busy screaming and jumping!! I think it felt so

good because we had worked so hard together as a

team and a dorm. We all wanted it- we even had a

pep rally on Sunday night to get ready for the bigevent!! I was especially excited to win for the girls

who've been in the dorm for more than this year.

When the announcer called our name, the look onmy RA's face was priceless!! It means a lot to me

that I helped win the title for her because it's her

last of some pretty special years in Cross Hall.Dorm Wars 2006 was a great experience- and

winning that medal made it even better!!! I would

do it again in a heartbeat!Cross team member Brienne Hicks tells, It was a

blessing and very awesome to be part of the Dorm

Wars team! I love the people that I competed

with...we made a good team! I was a little nervousat first but I turned that into energy and adrenaline

for the competition. My favorite event had to be

the obstacle course because of all the differentchallenges. I didn't mind the spam because I love

spam, but the chunks were hard to swallow! I

would definitely do it again! I had so much fungetting to know new people and trying new

things! It was especially nice to be part owinning team!!!

Dorm Wars has been one of the most fu

exciting experiences I have had since I haveat Lee. I was very surprised when they anno

that we had won because I wasnt really sur

well we had done in all of the events compa

the other teams. I wasnt really nervous beIm used to big crowds of people watchin

either from cheerleading or other sports. I

we had a good chance at winning because thon my team were so enthusiastic and will

work with each other. Our team was just out

to have fun no matter what. Realizing that wwon and not expecting it was the best part

whole night was fun and I would love to

again. We could never have done it with osupports from the girls in the dorm and th

couragement from the RAs and RD," says T

    Wilkerson, another team member.

Amie Coleman, a RA at Cross Hall says, L just say that Dorm Wars was such a blast!

ways is! And I have gotten the chance to e

ence it from both sides - as a resident and This year was so much fun because I ha

I know that several other dorms practiced for the event, but to tell you th

truth, although we tried to set up times to practice, we never did. But I ththat we all worked so well as a team together because of the community

Cross Hall. We have such a tight-knit group of girls living in Cross. So D

Wars was just another excuse to have fun together. The girls of Cross Hall have definately made themselves known this y

through intramurals, winning 2nd place in the spirit award at the dorm bketball game, and through everyday interactions at Lee. This is my 3rd y

living in Cross and my 2nd year as an RA. It just keeps getting better anbetter! Cross is such an amazing place to live. But it is the girls living he

that make this place feel like home.

I was so stoked about winning Dorm Wars. The team worked hard anddeserve it. They fought for the title - Amanda almost choked on a piece o

spam during the food eating contest and almost every girl came home w

full body rug burn from the obstacle course. Each girl on the team playesuch an important role and they put everything they had into the compet

for their dorm! I am so proud of each of them! The entire dorm also gav

their all - losing thier voices during the event and spending time makingfor their team and dorm. I love the encouragement Cross girls constantly

freely to one another - in Dorm Wars, intramurals, and through every day

struggles. We have such a great support team!

Sadly to say, this is my last year living in Cross and being an RA. I rember telling my RD, Michelle, the week before Dorm Wars, that this is on

thing I would love to win before leaving Cross. And we did and I am so

thankful that I got to be a part of it all! These girls are such an encouragto me! I am so blessed to have all of them in my life!

Yes, I was nervous - for my girls, I didn't want any of them to get hurt.

Also, I knew that we had a pretty good chance of winning after watchingteam compete, so waiting on Phil Cook to announce the winners seemed

the longest 5 seconds of my life! My favorite part of the event was the e

when people from all over campus came up to us and said they were roofor us the whole time. It's nice to know that lil' ol Cross has made itself

    known after all these years.

For the men, Storms came in third and Hughes came in second. Winning

all was Hicks Hall.Winning dorm wars has been the highlight of my college career. I wasn

really nervous; I was ready to get out there and show everyone how to w

dorm wars. For me the best part was the obstacle course. It was so muchand it seemed to just come naturally to me. I'm a senior and this was my

time even attending dorm wars. I'm so glad that I got to participate, and

would totally do it again given the chance. Winning dorm wars has chanmy life, states Ian Harding, a team member from Hicks Hall.

I wish I could take credit for my guys winning but it was the will of th

guys, the fans, and their team leader, Jesse Wood, one of my RAs. I havbeen an RD for 4 years now, one year at Medlin, one year at OBannon,

this is my second year as the RD of Hicks. I have also been one of the C

for Dorm Wars for the past 3 years and have put my heart and soul into i

the RDs entirely do, to make it better then the year before. So this year wtruly the best, because for the first time, my guys came back with the Go

God may bless America but I think he put a little extra blessing on B.L H

Let the beloved of the LORD rest secure in him, for hehields him all day long, and the one the LORD loves restsetween his shoulders. (Duet. 33:12)

Studying for mid-terms, papers, projects, Ahhh!!!! Itsverwhelming! Dont pull out all your hairbalds not in) or decide to up and quit: tryomething different. Rest in Christ. Whatoes that mean? In my life it is shown

hrough striving after Gods heart and know-ng He holds my very life in His hands. (Ps.39) This weekly article is not designed toorcibly bring you to God, its here to try toring up new facets of Gods amazing char-cter and it is up to you to question and pur-ue Him in these matters. He desires to be the Lover of youreart; to capture your every desire with His Presence. I know

He wants us to rest in Him and to know that He is taking caref us. Papers will still be due and studying for exams will beigh on the list of priorities, but God is always with us (Heb.3:5) and through these things He will always be our onlyrue choice of dependence.

Therefore, since the promise of entering His rest still stanlet us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen sof it. For we also have had the Gospel preached to us, justthey did; but the message they heard was of no value to th

because those who heard did not combinewith faith. Now we who have believed enthat rest~ There remains, then, a Sabbathfor the people of God~ Let us therefore m

every effort to enter that rest.~ Thereforesince we have a great High Priest Who hagone through the heavens, Jesus the Son God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. (Heb. 4:1-3, 9, 11a, 14)

I struggle with this too, but you knowwhat I am learning? The best times I have known are in thmidst of life when His peace envelopes my soul. Then Iknow, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that my God is good athe time- and all the time He is good.

I will run in the path of your commands, for you have setheart free. (Ps. 199:32)

I would turn that little one room building

next to Deacon Jones Dining Hall into a

dorm because that would be hilarious. I

would call it Tall Hall. I dont know

    why. Just because.-Skyler Daniel

The trolly should be a dorm because then

I [could wake up and] never have to walk

to class. I would call i t General Lee

    Hall.

    -Michael Ingham

I would turn the Humanities Building into

a dorm because it has a large front yard,

several patio tables, it is in the center of

campus, is very well decorated, and has

very large rooms. I would name it Central

    Paradise.

The PCSU would make a great dormbecause of all of the resources for fast

food! We should name it Jason

    Rodriguez Hall.

I would choose the PCSU. Why? Because I

could have my mail delivered to me, by me

(LOL), and I could use the computers all the

time. Also, I could have my own dining

services and elevator. It would be wonder-

The PCSU should be a dorm because it has
