COMPUTER ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION
SOUTHFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY
Job Title: Computer Assistant Part-Time Non-Career (Not Seasonal) No Benefits
Starting Salary: $9.25 Salary Range: $9.25 - $10.75
Job Description:
This position is responsible in assisting the public in using the Library’s computers, printers,
copiers, scanners and fax machines. Computer Assistants are responsible for assisting the public
in using various software applications in the Computer Labs, assisting card holders in signing on
to the public computers through our time management system, and issuing guest passes to
non-card holders. This position is also responsible for maintaining, setting up, and resolving
issues with the Library’s computers and troubleshooting hardware and software problems.
Computer Assistants perform basic maintenance on equipment, clean equipment, and perform
other technological support duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Strong commitment to positive and polite public service. Excellent communication skills. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software. Computer Lab and/or Library experience preferred. Experience setting up and maintaining PC Hardware. Software installation experience preferred. Ability to work independently after training is complete. Strong problem solving skills. Detail oriented.
Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to lift 25 lbs., bend, push and stand for periods of time.
Hours: Up to 20 hours per week
The Library is open evenings and weekends
Availability on some nights and/or weekends is required

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND PICNIC – SIGNIFICANT ACTIONS
Farmington Community Library once again hosted the Annual Membership Meeting and
Picnic on Friday, July 18. Special THANKS to the Farmington Community Library staff
and Director Tina Theeke who is retiring at the end of the July. Actions of note taken
during the membership meeting included:
Cost per stop for TLN Delivery services starting October 1 reduced to $899; 5
stops per week at $4,495, 4 sops per week at $3,596, 3 stops per week at $2,697
and 2 stops per week at $1,798 – this represents a 5.4% decrease in cost
Odilo EBook ownership program model reduces cost per circulation by 7 cents,
down from 18 cents to 11 cents per circulation
22 TLN member libraries (now at 28 as of August 20) took advantage of TLN
Odilo pilot project offer, paying only for per patron circulation and additions to
library EBook collection with TLN covering the initial platform one time setup
fee and population served rate for years one to three of the test project
TLN will establish and host a base collection of Odilo EBooks, providing access
for libraries big or small; library exclusive collections (think OverDrive
Advantage) will also be available or a hybrid combination as the project comes
online for cooperative wide access
MORE ODILO
The TLN eContent Committee has agreed to provide technical support and acquisition
input for the TLN three year Odilo test project. Join your colleagues on Thursday,
September 4 at 10:00 AM at the Novi Public Library for the inaugural Odilo
subcommittee meeting. Discussions, chaired by Ed Rutkowski, will include a brief
review of the Odilo project, service agreements for participating libraries, materials
budget and collection building responsibilities. Also, the subcommittee will establish the
final deadline to join the project with reduced costs covered by TLN For more

TLN Return on Dollars Invested in Services
TLN is calculating the annual value added for each dollar you contribute for services –
this includes all member libraries even those with no direct service agreement. Reciprocal
borrowing and MAP are services we include in the calculation. Watch for your library
specific figure as part of on-site visits to your library by Director Pletz, this fall. Many
municipal units of government can use our dollar value figures as part of Equal Valuation
$’s reported to the State of Michigan for potential dollars bac.
COMPUTER PAGE
The Computer Page handles the process of signing up and assisting library users at the Public Access computers,
including troubleshooting as needed.
Duties include the following:
1. Signing up and, as needed, checking identification for patrons wishing to use the library’s Internet workstations and
wireless access, including letting users know when their time is up.
2. Assisting patrons with proper and successful usage of the Library Print Release system, including application of
monies to account via the Library Payment Center.
3. Assisting users by doing simple troubleshooting as needed related to printing, emailing, using browsers and Windows
operating system, and connecting to wireless access, Wireless Printing and more.
4. Working on other duties as assigned by supervisor, including, but not limited to book pre-processing, material
discards, database maintenance projects, hardware maintenance and troubleshooting, or Web page updating.
Skills Required:
1. Familiarity with the Windows computing environment, including general knowledge of Windows 7 Pro, Windows 7
Home, Windows 8, Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista, Office 2007 and Office 2013.
2. Familiarity with smart phones, tablets, and mobile technologies.
3. Understanding of how Internet connections work, including networking, wireless, web browsers, HTML, Flash, Java,
Javascript, etc.
4. Excellent and engaging communication skills, including ability to adapt to a variety of age groups and experience
levels among library computer users.
5. Excellent problem solving skills.
6. Patient, friendly and approachable demeanor. Works well with others. Good at observing and multi-tasking.
Hours: Flexible scheduling with focus to morning/afternoon shifts, 4 to 12 hours each week, including availability
on weekends and evenings. This is a part-time position.
Rate of pay: $9.00 per hour to start

1. Usual Business
1.1 Order and Approvals

1.2 TLN Update – Angie Michelini
Telecomm Update: 13 libraries submitted requests for circuit upgrades.
A few libraries haven’t submitted their Telecommunications surveys. Angie
contacted them by e-mail.
RFP Committee:
o The members will be Tina Hatch from MILF (cable), Martin Smith from
REDF (shared system) and Frank Ferguson from PMTH (non-shared system).
These are the same members as 3 years ago.
o The RFP should be posted by July 1.
RFP for SAN: The bid was posted last Friday and is due July 7.
Merit Conference
o The conference was a big success. Several representatives from TLN libraries
attended.
Vendor-hosted meetings: The committee discussed the value of the vendor-hosted
meetings. It was felt that the meetings have been worthwhile but we don’t want to
overdo them.
o Angie will post vendor contact information to the TLN web site.
1.3 Announcements & Upcoming Events (Library News)
Garrett’s back to work!
Waterford went live with Evanced’s SignUp calendar system. It replaced the older
Events calendar system.
Orion Township is working with Bibliotecha to tag their collection with RFID.
They hope to be done tagging by the end of the summer. Self-checks should be
online by the end of the year.
Bloomfield Township is retagging from 3M to Envisionware. Backstage is doing
the tags. New gates will be installed in July.
Northville has new 3M software.
2. Discussion Topics
2.1 2014 Projects - Updates
Potential projects:
o Review the New User Tutorial, SearchPath and My Reading Log to see if
those can be made more mobile friendly using Responsive Web Design
techniques. Michael noted that some librarians at Northville weren’t aware
of SearchPath as an available resource.
o Cyber Security: Angie wants the committee to look at ways to provide
more security to programs and networks. The committee could look at
bringing in some speakers to talk on these topics. Todd has a possible
speaker for this topic.
o Setting up a Minecraft server at your library:
Judi’s son administers the server at Orion.
Northville has someone interested in it.
Farmington has 2 events at the library next week using the
Minecraft server.
Videoconferencing:
o Angie called GoToMeeting. The license is $468 per year as it was listed
on their web site. They didn’t offer a discount.
o Salem-South Lyon will check to see if they can transfer their existing
license to TLN.
o The Technology Committee does recommend GoToMeeting to other
committees to use.
o Angie asked that there be instructions created for hosting and participating
plus a plan for training.
Technology Forum:
o A “Save the Date” flyer has been sent. There’s a committee meeting this
afternoon.
Sharing Resources:
o Angie sent out an e-mail to the Chairs of the other TLN committees. Sarah
has the contact information for the Chairs.
3. Presentation by Toshiba Business Solutions Overview by Eric Plowman
Toshiba is the “GE of Japan”:
o Their business products are completely separate from their consumer
products division.
o Products they produce include: MFPs, laptops, tablets, Chromebooks, POS
units, interactive kiosks, displays, barcode printers and backup power
units.
Communications:
o Output Management – Do less printing. Printing = inefficiency.
o Capture and Workflow – System to system communication.
o Digital Signage
Managed Print Services:
o Can generate 30 – 40% savings. Each leasing renewal should generate at
least 10% savings. Toshiba wants you to print less!
o They do a full analysis including interviews of workers. They document
everything. They do this for free.
o They are “brand agnostic”. Toshiba partners with HP and Lexmark.
o They also sell their own replacement toner for HP and Lexmark printers
using newly manufactured cartridges (versus recycled). The “Encompass”
brand cartridges have a lower failure rate than OEM cartridges.
MFDs (Multi-Function Devices)
o The user interfaces are the same on all models (with one exception) and
include a full LCD panel.
o One universal print driver.
o Don’t try to print labels through a MFD.
Eco-Friendly:
o Can recycle paper with an eraser unit. Currently, only supports black and
white prints.
o With printers, it costs twice as much to print as to use a copier due to the
cost of the toner.
Software:
o “Brand agnostic” on software solutions too.
o Output management: Adobe LeanPrint can result in a 25% reduction in
printing.
o Capture and Workflow: Device and document security is DOD compliant.
The HD is wiped 5 times.
o Working with Fasoo.com on secure documents which can prevent
forwarding, etc.
o Digital Signage: ComQi software.
o Integration of hardware with your business applications.
o Payment and Billing solutions:
People still use coins.
A variety of coin-op and credit card solutions.
Support:
o Can create organization-specific web page:
Can purchase supplies online.
Report problems, view tickets, etc.
View response times and resolutions.
o Based on cost per page – everything is covered.
o Techs have average of 15 years of experience
o Monday – Friday: 8 am – 5 pm
o 4 hour response time – you’ll get a call first. Techs carry spare parts with
them.
o Additional services at additional cost.
o Offices in Farmington Hills are the main offices for Michigan.
Recycling:
o Start with one of their recycling bins.
o They take all cartridges and the recycled items are made into park
benches.
Supply Replenishment:
o They are working on automated toner replenishment.
o New cartridges typically show up 5 days before they are needed.
Display Technologies
o “Brand agnostic” with displays.

4. Sharing Resources
4.1 Security Issues/Tech Tips/Web Sites Worth a Look
Martin reported a problem with Joomla reporting that a site was updated when it
wasn’t which led to a site being hacked. Michael McEvoy recommends Admin
Tools plugin.
