“Breaking Silence” by Linda Castillo
Fans of J.D. Robb, Suzanne Brockmann, Julie Garwood, Laurell K. Hamilton and Sherrilyn Kenyon should check out this series. The third installment in the Kate Burholder series will grip you until the very end. This fast paced novel opens with a murder investigation in a seemingly quiet Amish community. If you’ve read the first two books of the series you know that nothing is quite what it seems in the town of Painters Mill, Ohio. You don’t need to read them in order but once you read the first one you will be hooked. Not a typical Amish book.

Escape to the Emerald Isle with author Mary Pat Kelly
She will share stories and photographs from her travels throughout Ireland. The March 2009 issue of Book Page, features Mary Pat Kelly in an
article in which she describes how she began tracing her Irish roots. While Galway Bay is a fictitious novel it is the product of her research into the
life of her great-great-grandmother, who was an Irish immigrant in the mid 19th century. Many of her stories and films are associated with Ireland.
According to her website http://marypatkelly.com/content/index.asp , “her award-winning PBS documentaries and accompanying books include To
Live for Ireland, a portrait of Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume and the political party he led; Home Away from Home: The Yanks in Ireland, a
history of U.S. forces in Northern Ireland during World War II; and Proudly We Served: The Men of the USS Mason, a portrayal of the only African-
American sailors to take a World War II warship into combat, whose first foreign port was Belfast. She wrote and directed the dramatic feature film
Proud, starring Ossie Davis and Stephen Rea, based on the USS Mason story.” She has also written two biographies about Martin Scorsese and
another about Scott O’Grady’s military rescue. Her writing is also featured in articles for Irish America Magazine. In addition to authoring several
books, Mary Pat Kelly worked as a Hollywood screenwriter and an associate producer with Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live, and
she wrote the book and lyrics for the musical Abby’s Song. Although Mary Pat Kelly was born and raised in Chicago, she is connected to the
homeland of her Irish ancestors. She currently lives in Manhattan with her Irish husband Martin Sheerin from County Tyrone. Mary Pat and her
family have enjoyed more than 60 years on Medicine Lake in Three Lakes.

Family History in Fiction
The Demmer Library’s Local History and Genealogy room has a great collection of books and magazines on how to
research genealogy and family history. But sometimes it’s fun to read a fiction or mystery book about how people solved a
mystery, traced birth parents, or tracked down an unknown family member with the aid of a genealogist or genealogical
references. The Demmer Library has some books that will fill the bill. Check these out!

Open House on August 17th
In an effort to meet the needs of patrons, the Library conducted a community
survey in 2010 focusing on current and prospective space requirements…residents
and visitors gave a tremendous response, returning over 550 surveys.
The survey results will help in developing a plan for library space needs projected into the year
2030.
The Demmer Library will hold an Open House on Wednesday, August 17 from 5:00 p.m. to
7:00 p.m. to review the results of the survey with the public. You are invited to stop in for
refreshments and a review of the interesting results. Attendees are invited to stay for the
“Bogged Down & Swamped” program presented by an educator from Trees For Tomorrow at
6:30 p.m. in the lower level of the library.

The Demmer Library has added the book, Life before Eighty: Autobiography, by Arvid B. Erickson to its
Genealogy and Local History room collection. Erickson tells of logging near Hazelhurst, Wisconsin, and
the challenges of pioneering women to provide the best care for their families. Enthusiasts of
telegraphy and railroading will find events documenting the growth of these industries in Wisconsin. He
describes how the World wars, the beginning of trucking, the effects of bigger and faster steam and
diesel engines and the advent of telephones affected his position as Agent/Telegrapher and his family
while living in Whitehall, Wisconsin. An addendum to the book includes four weeks of articles from the Banner Journal
in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, entitled “Early history of lumbering and pioneering with lumber barons and towns they
established that are now ghost towns,” written by Fred J. Rogers that were first published in December 1936. The
articles talk about logging and its effects on Wood, Clark, Jackson, Juneau and Monroe Counties.
Readers with an interest in Wisconsin history will find an interesting firsthand account of daily life and experiences from
a personal point of view. Look for this book on display with other Wisconsin history books on the counter across from
the circulation desk. For further Wisconsin history reading, browse the collection in the Genealogy and Local History
room
