In religion, .leit'er.son was a Freethinker; in social theory, he was an Individualist; in politic?, lie was a Democrat; in theories of government, ho was called an Anarchist. As you anil 1 may differ on the defini- tion of the word “Freethinker," perhujis it would he best to allow Jefferson himself to say wliat he meant 1)}- it. Authority is always ambitions, and is for- ever striving to extend its dominion over all the inter- ests, and all the relations of men. As you anil 1 may differ on the defini­tion of the word “Freethinker," perhujis it would he best to allow Jefferson himself to say wliat he meant 1)}- it. I quote from a letter un tho duty of Free- thinking, which he wrote to ids n<ii)hcw, I’eter Carr. 11c said: '

“Shako off tltu fears of. servile prejudice, under which weak minds arc servilely crouched. Fix rea­son firmly on her scat and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. * * * * Do' not be fright­ened from this inquiry by any fear of. its conse­quences. If it ends in a belief that there is no God, you will find incitements to virtue in the effort and pleasantness you feel in its exercise, and the iovo of others which it will procure you. If you find reason tabeliovn there is a God, the consciousness that you nro acting under his eye, and that lie approves you. will he a vast additional incitement; if that there he a future state, the hope of a happy existence in that state will increase the appetite to deserve it; if that desus was also a God, you will be contorted by a belief in his aid and love. Here is no expression either for or against any reli­gion or form of religion whatever. It might have been written by any Christian willing to submit his faith to tho. test of credible evidence, and the analy­sis of reason, that sublime defense which the Creator has placed behind the forehead of every man to prottet him against imposture and lie.?. Yet tho musical tone of the sentiment, ringiug round tho world in harmony with universal law, tells ns that it must have been written by an Infidel. Unhappily

,£or us all, the Christian refuses to bring before tho .tribunal of reason either tho facts of his Rible, or the .opinions of his priests, lie warns us to bewnre of the foolishness of knowledge and the depravity of the •’understanding. Any church that refuses lo bring every nrticlo of its creed before the supremo court of i'eason, lays itself open to suspicion; mid the ministers ’of the gospel who deny tho jurisdiction of that court are afraid that truth will get tho verdict, nml that justice will he done. From the dawn of human reason Until now liberty has been enlightening the world, hud logically enough the cleigy, all the time, .have been trying lo put out the light by placing extin­guishers upon liberty. Tho advice of Jefferson to his nephew was the wisdom of. a liberal philosopher who knew that the man who is not a Freethinker is ^tot n.free man..| This letter is also valuable as a rebuke to those partisan idolaters who subscribe to certain political doctriues because they think Saint Jefferson pro­claimed them in his epistle to tho Virginians, or the Kentuckians, or, maybe, tho Hibernians, or the Hel­vetians. They worship at the party shrine, mid they vote the ticket early and often to prove their ontlm- ijiftsm for tho faith as it wasin Jefferson.. Tho mental servility of these devotees is condemned in the epistle to Peter Carr: ‘‘Neither believe nor reject anythingbecause any other person ever rejected or believed it.” i have always admired tho remark of u certain 'doctor who once lectured before this society. One ol the members, in critieisiug him, called his attention to the .authority of some famous physician, to which .tliaJcjftnrev replied with .someimpatienco: "I, myself, am authority on this question.’’ Self-conceit is a' marie of weakness, hut self-conlidonco is a mark of strength. Whenever anyone tries to overpower you with “authority’’ in matters of religious opinion, whether it he the authority of liibles, Korans, Apos­tles’ Creeds, or Catechisms; tho authority of synods, sanhedrims, or ecumenical councils; tiie authority of popes of Rome, or Canterbury, or Constantinople, answer with tho independent self-respect of a Free­thinker and say “I, myself, aai authority on this question; and to my own conscience alone am I re­sponsible, and not even to that for tile rightness, hut only for the uprightness of my decision.” The writ­ings and opinions’of wise and virtuous men on any subject are worthy of study; they are indeed parts of our education; hut we should never allow tho wisest of them to speak to us with “authority” in matters of religion. . Authority is always ambitions, and is for­ever striving to extend its dominion over all the inter­ests, and all the relations of men. A feeble Italian priest, of the very narrowest education, an elderly gcntlemuii who does not understand so well as the little news-boy on the street the genius of our iuffi- tution?, nor the political character of our people,scuds his authority nil tho way from Rome to domineer in tho politics of New York; and American citizens who know ten times more than lie does, actually how their heads in degrading submission to that luitliority. They do not know their own minds until after they have heard frim the holy father. There is not one grand­mother in Chicago who Iui3 brought up chil­dren in honor who is not holier than lie. And to Americans, tho grandmother is a safer political guido than any holy father or luily grandfather in the land of Italy.

Jefferson lias been canonized as tho founder of a great party, and yet lie held in hitter scorn tho putty men who lay their manhood at tho feet of the cau­cus, and hold their ballots subject to the call of party discipline, in 1780, lie wrote to Francis Hopkins and said: “1 am not a fcderali-t because [never submit­ted tiio whole system of my opinions to the creed of any body of men whatever, in religion, in phi­losophy, in politics, or in anything else whero 1 was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free moral ngent. If 1 could not go to heaven hut with a party I would not go to heaven at all.”

Tho threat, or promise, of chief presiding oflieer Ellen Foster that the Prohibitionists would ‘"keep right on till they bring every man to the feet of Jesus,” seems to bo tbo motto of tlie Leavenworth cler­gy anti of their women workers. •‘Theso gentlemen of the cloth are not satisfied" with “prohibiting sports, of any kind upon any public grounds, streets or alloys of the ci­ty” on Sunday; tboy now propose to invade pnvato grounds also. If tbo boys happen to own a few vacant lots within tiio city limits, and if they think it better for their health and manhood to spend a few hours in the exorcise of their muscles in ball playing, instead of attending church or Sunday School, they must 1)0 driven oil those grounds ’by tho policeman's club—driven beyondtiio city limits lest tho sight and sound of such sacrilegious games should distract tho medita­tions of church'going people, and, perhaps, tempt somo to stay and witness the sport instead of going to hear tho sermon or Sunday school lesson._ I!y and by tlicso clergymen will lind that driving the bail players beyond the city limits will not help to till the churches. Then they will send these same women electioneer­ing from liouso to house for a law prohibiting tbo game of baseball, or other Sunday recreations, anywhere within the limits of tho state.

Rut when wo claim tho right to use tbo samo freedom of speech in denounc­ing tho superstitions and slaveries inherent in tho Christian marriage) system, that he uses in denouncing tiio superstitions and slaveries in­herent in tho Christian “Plan of Salvation,” then this valiant “Infi­del” editor makes common cause with our persecutors. If to con­tend that there shall bo no “sex-re­lations” between men and women except such as aro sanctioned by mutual love, and if \ o oppose tho prostitution of the procreative func­tion, whether legitimized by a mar­riage ceremony or not—if this be to bold a “beastly and loathesomo at­titude towards tho sexual relations,” then wo plead guilty to tho charge. If to uso plain, simple language in treating of tho horriblo abuses that aro now destroying the lives of thousands of women all over our land, and that aro sowing tho seeds

of vice, criino and imbecility* for the on-coming crop of humanity to battle with—if to preach tho gos­pel of science in regard to tho most important of all human duties, pow­ers and functions as against the old doctrine that “ignorance is bliss”— if to do this is to put ourselves in tho condition of “outlaws and per­sons to bo shunned,” then, Dr. Mon­roe, wo of tho L u c if e r baud justly como under tbo sweeping denun­ciations of your late article headed “Martyr Making.” Tour mention of a “Kansas paper” containing Mrs.Slcnkcr’s letter from jail makes it evident that your article was in great measure aimed at us, although you did not havo tbo manliness to call us by name. Whether it was ignorance of tho real teachings and conduct of those who aro now being martyred for their conscientious de­fense of what they believe to be a higher code of morality in sex-rela­tions, or whether it bo malignity on tho part of tho “captain” of tho “craft” known as the “Iron-clad Age,” wo havo no means of know­ing, but tills much wo do know, that while Dr. M. holds ©ut the idea that his is pre-eminently a moral and pure sheet ho has, in this samo ar- ticlo from which wo havo quoted, printed a sentonce so shockingly vilo that wo decline to republish it, oven to show to what depths of de­famatory abuse tho self-righteous Dr, can descend. n.

J. S. Loveland in a scries of very ably written articles in thot “Now Thought” on the “Failuro a'f .Spir­itualism,” attributes much of what lie, a Spiritualist, concedes to bo failure, to the following:

To a very largo extent this charge is true in regard to Secularists, Free­thinkers or Rationalists of every grade. Wo depend too much upon tiio public school, upon books and papers, and upon individualistic effort, and fail to avail ourselves of tho rtrength that comes with or­ganization. Wo all know tho pow­er, for good or evil, of early im­pressions, and vet wo send our children to Sunday schools under the delusive impression that they will not be inlluenced by tho false­hoods and suporstitious notions there inculcated. Wo havo heard good, honest and earnest Liberals talk liko this:

“Oh, well, lot the children go to tho Sunday School. I got my first start'in Frcothought by listening to tho absurdities of tiio Bible as taught in Sunday schools.”

While to tho well balanced intel­lect there may be but little danger of contamination from listening to such teachings, yet to tho child of emotional naturo tiio effect must necessarily be disastrous.
