With four community publications, we are all about community here at Local News Publications. We love nothing more than hearing that new groups have started up from seeds planted by articles in our publications, as has happened recently. We hear feedback that memberships at service groups and social clubs are increasing, and we couldn’t be happier.

Without active communities, and thereby, active community participants, we would all be poorer in spirit and miss out on so many wonderful connections.

Being part of a community group is a win-win situation. You enjoy outings, new friendships and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a group. Others benefit by your friendship and input and, in most cases, the world community benefits by fundraising efforts and the raising of awareness of so many ways we can help our fellow man.

I have been invited to quite a lot of clubs and groups to talk about the work of Destiny Rescue and our trip to Thailand, and I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and getting to know many residents. One thing I notice is that often people in these groups are members of multiple groups, and I see familiar faces everywhere I go.

People who have a heart to help their fellow man are often so generous with their time and energy that they participate in two or even three clubs. Far from seeing it as burden or something they ‘should’ do, these people are committed and dedicated to seeing change, locally and globally.

I am constantly encouraged, not only by people’s response to what I share, but by the generosity, both financially and in the warm welcome I receive, and the willingness to hear the cold hard facts about issues that are going on around the world.

People who are in these clubs and groups are people who are willing to face the injustices and, often evil, actions of others, head on. They are people who firmly, and rightly, believe that a difference is a difference, no matter the size.

And the fact is, we can all make a difference. Maybe you’ll make a difference to a friend in a club who is dealing with loss, or hardship. Maybe you’ll relieve a burden from another by putting your hand up to be on the committee. Maybe you’ll make a difference by offering to drive someone to and fro from activities and outings. Maybe you’ll be on the stall to raise funds for fresh drinking water in Africa. Or buy some jewellery that a Destiny Rescue girl made. Or donate some towels for Giving with Love. It all makes a difference. But you have to be where the action is. Why not think about joining a service group? Or start a special interest group yourself. It could be just the thing someone else is looking for.

We all know how easy it is to forget to worm your pet throughout the year. But, because worming treatments only kill the worms in your pet at the time you are dosing them, it is vital to keep up a regular worming routine. Some worms produce around 30,000 eggs per day, and some worms can survive years in the environment, meaning they are an ongoing risk of infection for pets. Worming does not act like a vaccine.

Dogs and cats infected with worms pose a threat to your family- especially children. Because of the close bond we share with our animals, some of the intestinal worms that affect our pet can be transmitted to humans with potentially devastating effects. Children are particularly at risk as they can easily come in contact with worm larvae that can penetrate the skin, causing serious scarring and inflammation.

The worms we are most concerned with are: roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

Vets around Queensland have been focusing on raising awareness of the need to worm your pet. This month we are reminding you about the importance of worming all year round to give your pets the best healthcare and protection for the whole family. Sometimes worming can be frustrating, and difficult, particularly in non co-operative cats.

However, there have been breakthroughs in stress-free worming for dogs and cats, so talk to your vet about the easier ways to worm your pet. Modern worming treatments are extremely effective and easy to apply- so easy, you can administer them at home, using flavoured chew tablets and spot on treatment for cats. I used to tell my clients that the first 600 times are the hardest and after that it is easy but now it is easy and stress free all the time.

The worming treatment your vet can talk to you about is for all year dosing and remember a few tips for hygiene around your pet.• Wash your hands after handling your pet around the

mouth and tail• Avoid your pet licking your face• Pick up your dog poop from the yard• Cover sandpits so only children dig in them. • Weigh your pet to make sure you get the correct dosage

The latest CreekWATCH Restoration Day in early June was a great success. The event took place on World Environment Day and what better way to celebrate than by cleaning up, weeding and planting in our very own catchment!

The Restoration Day took place at the Oxley Creek Catchment Association’s (OCCA) Everyone’s Environment Grant site on Stable Swamp Creek in Rocklea, a project funded by the Queensland Government.

A particularly special remnant forest on Energex land behind their Esitrain site, close to Kookaburra Park, was the focus for the day’s activities. Here Eucalyptus tereticornis and Lophostemon suaveolens dominate and the dainty leaved Melaleuca linariifolia is also found. Acacia leiocalyx was flowering on the day.

Energex is supportive of our restoration efforts, and staff were extremely helpful providing cold drinks and, not only removed the rubbish we collected, but also emptied and returned our reusable rubbish bags.

Attendees included OCCA members and volunteers, local community members, our local councillor, Steve Griffiths, a representative of our CreekWATCH sponsor Sims Metal Management and a team from Healthy Waterways.

Participants collected a large trailer full of rubbish, planted over 80 trees, removed Mother-in-laws Tongue and carefully removed seeds and seed pods from a number of invasive species.

Thank you to everyone who came along! We look forward to our next Restoration Day at this site in October.

Queensland Plan Open House Event On Saturday 3 August, I am holding a Queensland Plan event. This event will provide

Indooroopilly electorate constituents the opportunity to have their say on a long-term vision for the state. Community members will be able to respond to the Queensland Plan questions and share and discuss their ideas about how they see Queensland in 30 years, in an informal and relaxed setting. The event will be held at the Indooroopilly State School hall on Russell Terrace with constituents welcome to drop by any time between 2 and 4pm.

You can also go to www.queenslandplan.qld.gov.au/ and have your say on the Queensland Plan.

Queensland Plan School CompetitionYoung Queenslanders now have the opportunity to share their bright ideas about

Queensland’s future by participating in the Queensland Plan school program. The schools competition will see primary students draw their own vision for Queensland on specially designed postcards. Secondary students will be asked to get involved by submitting a creative video response to at least one of the Queensland Plan questions.

School principals can find out further information on the initiative including the competition guidelines, entry forms and supporting materials on the Queensland Plan website via www.qld.gov.au/queenslandplan.

Fetes and Trivia NightsIt’s fete time in the Indooroopilly electorate. I enjoy this opportunity to attend and

support our local schools, kindergartens and churches as they hold their annual, and for many, biggest fundraising event of the year.

Fetes are a great opportunity to catch up with friends as I did recently at the Christ the King school fete. You can stock up on homemade cakes, biscuits and jams, rummage through the second hand book stall and try your hand at the games and rides. They are a wonderful day out for families.

I also enjoy testing my general knowledge at trivia nights. The Graceville State School trivia night stretched our creativity as well as our minds. The science fiction theme was embraced by all who showcased their love of the genre in some amazing costumes which added to the fun of the night.

The newly re-established Probus Club of Chelmer and District draws its members mainly from suburbs Chelmer to Oxley. The new club President is Rob Bruce, a retired human resources specialist .

He said that the club has a varied guest speaker program featuring quality guest speakers on a range of topics of interest to retirees and the new committee looks forward to establishing an outings program and other activities of interest to members.

In June, Kep Coughlan gave an insightful talk on recent developments in Cambodia, especially in re-building the agricultural industry and the education of women.

At our next meeting on Wednesday 24th Gary Thorpe, General Manager of the award winning radio station 4MBS Classic FM will speak to us about community participation in the radio programmes, music festivals and performances.

In August, Scott Cadoo, Senior Librarian in the Brisbane City Council will inform us about ‘The Modern Library: now and in the future’.

The Probus Club of Chelmer and District meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Corinda Bowls Club, Hall Ave, Corinda and welcomes retired men and women who wish to meet for club meetings and other activities with like-minded retirees.

Enquiries may be directed to Coral Reichman on 3379 7540.

If you have a soft spot for all things pink, this wonderful tree could quickly grow on you. The Lacebark, also known as the Lace Kurrajong or Pink Kurrajong, offers a dazzling pink floral display each summer. The bell-shaped dusky pink flowers, with their brown stems, have a felt-like texture when touched.

Right now, this hardy rainforest tree, one of the hundreds of specimen trees in the Sherwood Arboretum, is content to display its maple-like leaves and distinctive brown seed pods. It’s interesting to note that the tree’s botanical name Brachychiton discolour is closely linked to those boat-shaped pods.

The botanical name comes from the Greek ‘brachys’ (for short) and ‘chiton’ (for coat of mail), a good combination for the hairy brown seed pods which mature from December to July. The Latin ‘discolour’ describes the contrasting leaf colour, from a dark green surface to a pale green underside.

Aboriginals sought out the seeds as a nutty roasted snack while the wood of these medium to large (30m) trees, was prized for making hand shields and the bark for making dillybags. The seed pods also are a firm favourite for colourful insects which dine on their plentiful sap.

Each month, the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association holds a two-hour working bee to care for this heritage-listed Arboretum, off Jolimont Street. If you would like more information, please email [email protected].

Late May saw Sherwood Probus members enjoying a tour of the new ABC studios at Southbank. The use of how much modern technology in radio and television broadcasting was something we had not realised. Previously two of their staff, Spencer Howson and Jenny Woodward had given talks at our meetings.

In early June, the garden group enjoyed an exploration of the Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens where one of our members is a volunteer guide. First a walk through some lovely areas followed by the free bus taking us to sections we did not know existed. A good commentary explained various trees and plants and how they came to be in the gardens. After a picnic lunch we adjourned to the Planetarium for their latest show. In all a most interesting and informative day.

As we did not have a speaker for May, we had a “Getting to Know You” session where the meeting broke up into groups of eight. Each member gave a brief resume of their life and then discussed a provided question. The leaders then gave a summary of their groups to the meeting.

Our speaker for June was Simon Newcomb OAM, President of Centenary Rowing Club, who spoke on “My dream for the sport of rowing”. We will not be having a speaker for our July meeting as it is our birthday lunch to celebrate 13 years of fun, friendship and fellowship.

The Mah Jong group is still ‘carrying on’ every Thursday morning. Likewise the happy group of scrabblers meet every second Thursday afternoon. Lots of fun for all.

The book group are enjoying “The Happiest Refugee” by Ahn Do. This extraordinary true story is of a boy’s journey from starvation at sea to becoming one of Australia’s best loved comedians.

The dinner and lunch groups continue to enjoy monthly outings to local clubs and restaurants where good conversation and good food make the night.

Graceville Community Garden Updateby John Fitz-Walter

Last month we promised to talk about more of those old-fashioned plants which grandma used to grow, but which are rarely seen in nurseries.

What about Granny’s Bonnet (Aquilegia vulgaris)? This has long been a cottage garden favourite. It is a true Columbine of Europe but thrives in most areas of Australia. This plant is a clump-forming perennial growing to about one metre in height. It bears short-spurred, funnel-like flowers and there are pink, crimson, white and purple varieties. Aquilegia like a well-drained spot with plenty of light.

Another funnel-like flowering plant is the Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa). This lovely plant (pictured) produces stunning velvety orange/red trumpets, lined inside with bright yellow, which last for ages. They are perennial plants but have a dormant period to allow their tuberous roots to rest. The foliage wilts soon after flowering stops, so snip off flowers as they decline, stop watering after the plant dies off, and store. Mist the soil surface once or twice weekly during the dormant period and move into a bright spot with indirect sunlight when new shoots appear, and recommence watering. Gloxinia are suitable for pots but are quite happy in a shady spot in the garden where they can spread. Propogate from cuttings in late spring or summer.

There were always daisies in Granny’s garden. Try some Shasta Daisies (Leucanthemum x superbum) which bear large,

daisy-like white flowerheads with yellow centres. These are hybrids and were first noticed on the slopes of Mount Shasta in Washington State, USA. There are now many varieties including doubles and singles but always white. They are hardy plants which spread to 60-90 cm.

Michaelmas daisies are actually Asters which are native to North America. There are just so many varieties however a good low-growing, compact plant for a cottage garden is Aster novi-belgii “Audrey” which grows in many old gardens. It only grows to 30cm but is covered in double lavender-blue flowers all through autumn. All Asters prefer full sun in sub-tropical areas and are easy to grow. Prune down to ground level and tidy the clumps after flowering. Propogate by division of plants or from soft cuttings in spring.

More on plants from old gardens next month.

Community gardens around Brisbane will host a series of intimate, slow moving feasts as part of the inaugural Australia-wide Fair Food Week, which runs August 19-25. These pop-up events will showcase Brisbane’s finest chefs handcrafting locally sourced seasonal ingredients from community gardens, farms and businesses. We aim to invigorate a spirit of community around seasonal eating and the culture of a shared meal.

Fair Food Week celebrates those who help in getting food from paddock to plate. The overarching message of the week is about helping to build a fairer food system, one that prioritises people and their knowledge of our food’s origin.

It is envisaged that each chef will provide a three course meal at a community garden. The organising team will coordinate chefs and community garden representatives to determine available produce, menu, theme, and necessary equipment. GCG has expressed an interest in being a part of the Fair Food Week 2013. Next month further details will be given with regards to how you can be a part of this foodies paradise!

While we are on the topic of ‘foodies’ we wish to thank Fundies Wholefood Market at Corinda who are providing a large bucket of compostable materials each week from their produce section to go into the GCG wormery; turning plant waste into soil. Please contact

us if you know of, or can provide, any ‘useful waste’ for recycling within our gardens.

Then there is another type of ‘fundies’ needed, those that assist with ongoing costs incurred in maintaining the gardens - thank you Bunnings at Oxley for enabling our gardeners to recently raise funds by conducting a Sausage Sizzle at your store entrance.

The Graceville Community Gardeners are very proud of their productive top-bar beehive and the bees that help to pollinate the crops in the garden! If you have aspirations in amateur beekeeping or would just like to know more about this intriguing food source and its production, Tim Auld of All You Can Eat Gardens conducts workshops at the Graceville Community Garden. Any questions or if want to have a chat with the GCG bee organizer, phone Tim on 0421 405 783 or visit www.allyoucaneatgardens.com.au/products/top-bar-bee-hives for more information.

A children’s garden playgroup, Southside Nature Babes meet at the garden on Wednesday morning from 9am to11am, for more information contact Kerrie at Benarrawa on 3379 9925.

The Graceville Community Garden is located beside the Benarrawa Community Centre, at the corner of Waratah Ave & Cordalba St, Graceville. Everyone is invited to be part of the regular Sunday working bee and morning tea from 7am to 10am.

Corinda fete is always great, and this year will be no exception. As well as stalls galore, rides and entertainment, the fete will this year include an Open Day, giving residents in the community the opportunity to join tours of the interactive classrooms and the school campus.

There will be something for everyone on Saturday August 3 from 10am - 4pm, with fete goers able to enjoy rides such as the Trackless Train, Bumper Balls and of course, the Super Slide, as well as many more.

Parents will be able to enjoy a coffee while browsing the many stalls like the homemade goods stall, jams and relishes, and the art and crafts stall.

Entertainment on the day will include performances by the Corinda State School Band, Choie and Strings, as well as choreographed class performances in particular the ‘Thriller’ performance at the Performing Arts Centre. Other performances on the day will be given by Drum Beat, Dance School, Corinda State High School and more.

So mark August 3 at Corinda State School, 330 Cliveden Avenue, Corinda, in your diary now and prepare for a fun day out for the whole family.

For further details, contact Janelle on 3716 0657.

Due to a number of unforeseen circumstances I missed last month’s deadline. This month there are two events coming up in August that I want to bring to your attention.

The first is on Saturday the 3rd of August at our Sub-branch at 2 Clewley Street, Corinda commencing at 1.30 pm. This will appeal to the history buffs out there, and particularly to those who are descendants of Boer War Veterans. The Queensland Boer War Memorial Committee is having a presentation on the Siege of Elands River Post, conducted by Miles Farmer.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of Sherlock Holmes fame, was a war correspondent in South Africa and visited the siege after its relief by Lord Kitchener. He said, “When the ballad writers of Australia are looking for a topic, there will be none finer than the Siege of Elands River”. The epic ballad “Elands River” by George Essex Evans, late of Toowoomba, will be recited by Will Stanfield, the bushie, holder of several Australian bush poetry awards.

Another draw card will be a presentation by Dick Cijffers, “The Boer War from a Boer Perspective”. Dick runs ‘Journeys World Wide’, and is Bloemfontein, South Africa where he served in the SA Army. Miles will be supported in his presentation by Ms Pixie Annat MBE OAM whose grandfather was killed during the siege. Pixie visited the site in 2001 for the dedication of a plaque honouring the late Lt. Annat. An update on the Boer War Memorial Project will be given by Ron McElwaine. A gold coin donation towards afternoon tea will be appreciated.

On the 11th of August, the Sub-branch will be holding its annual Kokoda Day commemoration at 10.00 am at the Sub-branch. In addition to the surviving Kokoda Veterans, we hope to have a contingent of Afghan Veterans who will be doing the Kokoda Trek in July. Our guest speaker will be the well known military history author, Patrick Lindsay.

CONTACT The Local News The Oxley Men’s Shed has

had a very busy and enjoyable month. The exterior walls to the shed are now complete and all the insulation batts and half of the interior walls are fixed in place.

One of the most exciting events to occur was the supply of electricity being connected and florescent lighting being installed. Boxing has been erected in preparation for the construction of a cement pathway down the Eastern side of the shed.

Not only have the members been occupied with these stage 2 extensions but they have also installed a large water tank in preparation for their community garden. One raised garden bed is about to be started and vegetables planted in the near future.

A programme of visits to outside venues has been planned by Michael Reynolds with the latest being a trip to Farmfest in Toowoomba. Oxley Men’s Shed President John Brown said that with a membership of approximately forty members who bring along a vast degree of knowledge and skills, the enthusiasm shown is something to see. He said that even though we haven’t set our shed up yet, we are still helping out the community with assistance given lately to both the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre and Sherwood Kindergarten.

He also said that the members were very proud of the fact that all the construction work had been carried out by themselves and not having to call on outside contractors.

We have had an average attendance at our Tuesday meetings of twenty five members who all share their experiences over a cup of tea. John said that all are welcome to come along to our Tuesday meeting which starts at 9.00am.
