For more than 100 years, The Loomis Communities has been a visionary leader in senior living across the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts. It was the first organization in the state to open a continuing care retirement community. Loomis has since grown into a multi-location, not-for-profit organization with three distinctive retirement communities that embrace and reflect the mission and values that have successfully guided it from the beginning.

The Loomis Communities offers an unparalleled lifestyle with superior amenities and services. As a continuing care retirement community, we provide a continuum of care that allows residents to remain in the community if increased services and additional care should be needed. All three communities are fully accredited by CARF/CCAC, so you can be assured our programs, care and financial health are of the highest quality.

A Report from the President and Chief Executive Officer

It was a wonderful decision when I accepted a position at The Loomis Communities 29 years ago! In my role as Chief Financial Officer, I have participated in future planning while prioritizing Loomis’ financial stability. Every one of those years presented opportunities and challenges that brought small and sometimes large changes to the organization, the buildings, and resident priorities. Every one of those years played an integral part in assuring that Loomis remains a leader in senior living.

Lauren Scruggs’ retirement led to my appointment as Loomis’ President and Chief Executive Officer in January. I am so honored and proud to be chosen and excited for the next steps we will take together.

It is a strange time, not how any of us could have imagined this new decade to begin. We have seen loss, fear, and uncertainty. But we have also seen warmth, caring, and commitment to each other that has become the hallmark of this organization. 2020 is a year like no other, presenting all of us with very unique challenges and uncertainty, but I am gratified that within those challenges we find opportunities to be innovative, collaborative, and committed to our values, and our strategic direction. Following many months of data gathering, focus groups, and research by team members, residents, and other stakeholders the Board of Directors approved Loomis’ position on each focus area identified in the Strategic Plan. These include; healthcare, wellness, dementia, and hospitality. The positions frame how we will carry out our mission over the coming years.

We operate in a dynamic environment which changes with every generation of residents, each putting their own mark on what it means to live life to the fullest. Loomis residents lead the pack. They never cease to impress me with their energy, curiosity, and intelligence – they are true role models for those of us who work at The Loomis Communities.

I am honored to know the active and engaged individuals who choose Loomis for their home and grateful for the amazing dedication of the Loomis team members today and always.

Margaret Mantoni President and CEO

Artists in Residence (and some budding artists!)

Many people enjoy the arts, hobbies and other interests after taking up residence in their Loomis home. While some spend more time doing something they have always enjoyed, others learn a new skill, and still others enjoy sharing their skills and knowledge with others.

Shirley Appy had a career in acting prior to moving to Applewood. When she learned that a fellow resident John Walker was teaching a watercolor class she signed up. “I never had the time to take an art class in high school or college, and when I moved here they were offering a watercolor class. Took it, loved it and I thoroughly enjoyed it.” John Walker has worked with watercolors for 76 years. “There is usually at least one and sometimes two students who have a pretty good feel for watercolor, while others are starting from scratch. Most all finish with something that they are a little bit proud of.”

Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing resident Nancy Rogers is an award winning quilter who found an apartment with a perfect location to continue enjoying her craft. “Quilting was my life; it is all I wanted to do consistently. When my daughter and I saw this apartment, she said ‘mom your sewing room’ and I said yes of course, it’s perfect!”

8

Loomis Village resident, Nissan Bernstien, turned her enclosed porch into an art workspace and paint studio. Nissan, a career commercial artist, has changed her focus from drawings for department stores, to acrylic paintings. Her work was recently featured in an exhibit at Loomis Village in the main hallways on two floors.

Rose Lander’s lifetime passion for teaching music continues in her retirement. Rose teaches Suzuki violin classes to students of all ages in her apartment in Loomis Village. She hosts occasional recitals with her students in the auditorium for the enjoyment of all.

Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing Resident Yvonne Cherry enjoyed making teddy bears out of German mohair for many years. Since moving to Loomis, Yvonne joined a knitting group and has begun spinning her own yarn. “I joined this wonderful knitting group. All skill levels are welcome, from beginning to Ruth. Ruth Sandow is the master.” Ruth says everyone in the knitting group has a great time. “From never picking up

needles to some who are pretty good, we have one lady in the group that sits and says ‘what am I making?’ It’s really fun, we have a good laugh.”

The Community Music School in Springfield was recently awarded a grant to organize twelve rehearsals with some residents of Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing that concluded with a performance. For some, the grant gave them an opportunity to try something new, others like Janet Roper, had spent more than 20 years performing with the Wilbraham Women’s Club Chorus group and other groups. All enjoyed the opportunity to perform with young people.

Loomis Village and Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing both have woodshops for residents to ply their craft or try something new. Resident John Schechter is one of the driving forces behind developing the Loomis Village woodshop. John got his start in general carpentry when he was young. For him, the shop has a special purpose in the community. “Our goal is for residents to take on whatever projects they wish, whether furniture, toys, or even structure framing.” John says, “Any place that they have an interest, we have an interest in helping them along. Our goal is to build a sense of community.”

Experienced residents like John and Randy Hyvonen are there to offer assistance to both residents and team members. Randy shares, “I’ve been in conversation with at least four different team members about helping them do something,or them coming in and using space; and I am pleased with their excitement. I find it very gratifying getting to know the team members!”

In the woodshop at Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing, resident Peter Courtney has spun beautiful wooden bowls from trees cut down by landscapers on the property.

Applewood resident Jerry Weinstein has been an avid pianist for the past 84 years. Jerry continues to play at Applewood. If you see him playing the piano in the front lobby, ask him about “The Applewood Song”. The song has become the un-official anthem of the community. “In my second year of college, I was hired as a music counselor at a local camp. When I moved to Applewood, I changed the words so it could become the camp song for Applewood!”

The glory of taking up residence at The Loomis Communities is that individuals have the time to learn a new art form, to continue enjoying things they’ve done for many years, or to connect with others who have more experience.

Elvira Whiting Ball1843-1915 The Elvira Whiting Ball Award is named for the founding leader of The Loomis Communities who, with a group of Holyoke women over 110 years ago, decided to provide older adults a place to live “exempt from strife”. When there was no Social Security or long-term care insurance, they raised funds for construction of a home for older adults who could not afford private care. In the fall of 1911, the first residents moved to the home on Loomis Avenue in Holyoke, beautiful within and out, dedicated to their comfort and happiness.

The Loomis Communities Elvira Whiting Ball Award is presented to an individual or group that has advanced the mission of The Loomis Communities and personifies the spirit of our founder.

The Elvira Whiting Ball Award for Improving the Lives of Older Adults 2019 HonoreeCynthia Jacelon, PhD RN-BC CRRN FGSA FAAN

Dr. Cynthia Jacelon is a rehabilitation clinical nurse specialist certified in gerontological and rehabilitation nursing. Cynthia was chosen for the Elvira Whiting Ball Award because of her groundbreaking work professionally and in the community to promote well-being in frail older adults. In addition to more than 35 years of nursing practice with older adults and teaching nursing students, Cynthia’s area of research and expertise is promoting dignity, function, self-management of chronic health problems, and independence in older adults.

In her research, she has explored the role of older individuals in affecting the outcomes of their own hospitalization, the processes used by community-dwelling elders to manage chronic health problems, the meaning of dignity to elders, and the role of smart environments in promoting independence.

Cynthia’s work on the concept of dignity is internationally recognized, and her instrument to measure dignity, the Jacelon Attributed Dignity scale, has been used in several places around the globe including Greece and Iran.

Cynthia is Professor and Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded UManage Center for Building the Science of Self-Management and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Director, PhD Program at the University of Massachusetts, College of Nursing.
