WHERE LOVE BEGINS Jesus says in John 15:12, “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you”. Love begins with God Himself. In all He does God shows Himself to us as a loving and caring Heavenly Father. Love is not new, but Jesus gives new emphasis to its place in the life of His people. The Ten Commandments were given by God to protect the most fundamental relationships of people to their Creator and neighbor. They deal with a series of outer actions, first toward God and then toward others. But the law is not fulfilled by such outward acts. If anyone’s righteousness is to exceed “that of the scribes and Pharisees” (Matthew 5:20) and “be perfect” (Matthew 5:48), it must be a matter of the inner motive of the heart. Love does not make the commandments any less rigorous. Life under the Holy Gospel creates a more demanding, loving, and responsive self-discipline. Jesus has set us free from the Law so we may respond in gratitude far beyond what Law requires. Love begins in God’s unlimited love for us in His Son, Jesus Christ! So it is my prayer for all of you to look to the Lord God and ask Him to help you to accept His love for you. Then for you to accept in response, the joyful discipline of your new commandment of love! Hope to see you in worship this coming Sunday morning right here at Macedonia. COME WALK WITH US The Alamance County MEMORY WALK is the annual fundraiser that raises money to enable the Alzheimer’s Association to assist those

afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease in Alamance County through education, information and support. You also make it possible to continue the search for effective treatments and preventions. This year the walk will take place inside Holly Hill Mall on Saturday, September 25. Registration begins at 9:00 am and the walk starts at 10:00. Refreshments and entertainment will be available before the walk. (If you’ve never heard the Twin Lakes Memory Care Chimers, you’re in for a treat!) There’s no required length of walk; you can walk a short distance or a full mile or more! The important thing is to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease, raise money to support families in need, and have fun! If you can’t walk, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association. Contact Connie Poovey (585-2401) to sign up your team and get more information.

JOIN US FOR CHANCEL CHOIR! You are invited to come and sing God's

praises with the Chancel Choir on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. and during the 10:30 a.m. worship services. We resume rehearsals on August 4. Men and women

grade 9 through 99 years young! Come and Sing!

WANTED: Choir members whereabouts unknown

LAST SEEN: Hiding out in the congregation

DESCRIPTION: Male and female, young and old, musical and cheerful, may be armed and desperate for a robe

REWARD: “Give and you shall receive.”

YAAC PARTY Sundaes on Sunday

Summertime and the living is easy! Makes you think of ice cream and fun, doesn’t it? We’re planning ‘Sundaes on Sunday’ for our friends with developmental disabilities: August 29 from 3-5pm. We’ll start off with ice cream fun, then play bingo (their favorite event!). Your help is needed: you can donate bingo prizes (adult appropriate), ice cream toppings, cookies, or YOUR TIME. We always have a great time, and you’ll be glad you did!

BRUNSWICK STEW and BAKE SALE It’s time once again to gather for fun and fellowship as we make the Macedonia world-famous Brunswick Stew!!! We will be gathering in early November (date to be announced soon) to chop onions and potatoes, take turns stirring (and telling tales and listening to our wonderful guitarists as they strum along), and share in the great feelings we get when we’re helping someone else. All you wonderful cooks, be thinking about the delicious cakes, pies, breads, and other goodies you can make for sale that day. As always, the money goes to support Allied Churches, Loaves & Fishes, and many other local ministries. As you know, with the economic hardships we have ALL faced, there are more people than ever who need the services of these ministries, and their donations are down. This is one way we can make a difference! Order forms for stew will be included in the next newsletter.

SOUNDS FISHY

Seen on a church signboard in northern Minnesota one summer: “Sure, you can

worship God with a fishing pole in your hand, but when was the last time a walleye told

you, `Your sins are forgiven`?”

A boy was asked by his Sunday school teacher if he thought Noah did much fishing off the ark? “How could he?” replied the lad. “He only had two worms and there were only two fish.”

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

On December 17, 2006 Macedonia helped make a dream come true for Antoinette Van Hook and her family! On that day, her new home was dedicated, thanks to the Lutheran churches of Alamance County, Twin Lakes Community, and the Habitat for Humanity ministry. Habitat is now building at a new subdivision in Graham, off West Gilbert Street. This subdivision will ultimately provide home to 18 families. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Once again, ‘LUTHERANS WILL BUILD ON FAITH’!!! The first work day will be Saturday, August 28, from 9-12. Enclosed in this newsletter is a form to be filled out if you are interested in helping in any way. We need those with carpentry skills and those who just like to cook or ‘go-fer’ stuff! THERE WILL BE AN INFORMATIONAL SESSION ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 10, 7-8pm at Twin Lakes Community Gathering Room. Please come to learn more about Habitat and everything you need to know to help in this endeavor. Ice cream will be served! WE ALSO NEED YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT. Macedonia would like to raise $5000 towards the cost of the house. The money raised not only pays for the Graham house, but 10% is tithed and pays for a Habitat house to be built in another country. Stay tuned for specific fundraisers, or just write a check to Macedonia and mark it ‘Habitat’ and it will go towards that purpose. We hope to complete the house by December so the family can move in for Christmas. Thank you for your support of this very important ministry.

Did You Know? The flower chart is on the wall outside of the church office. Please check for openings. Custom Floral Creations on Church Street has a key to the church and will deliver flowers for you. You may use the florist of your choice and select any type or size of arrangement, but be aware of the size of the vase and inserts. Too large can be top heavy and may also be very costly. If you want the bulletin to indicate that the flowers are in memory of or in honor of someone, please get the information to the church office before the end of the day Wednesday. The moon will be full on Tuesday, August 24th. This full moon will be the most distant and therefore the smallest of the year. Contribution statements are sent quarterly to anyone that contributes. For those that pledged, your actual contribution will be compared to your pledge to help you stay on track with your commitments. Jane Bowman and her daughter Susan caught 4 people trying to break into the church Thursday evening, July 15th. Nothing was taken since they caught them in the act of trying to enter an unlocked window in the nursery. Please be careful. If you open it, close it, if you unlock it, lock it back, if you turn it on, turn it off, if you move it, put it back where you found it, and if you dirty it, clean it. If you have any ideas for this section of the newsletter, please contact the following members of the “Learn to Communicate Better” committee, Vern Misenheimer, Joan Tolley, Pastor Rust, or Yvonne White.

TAKE TIME TO LEARN

On June 25th, seven youth and two adults went to Lutherplace in Washington D.C. for three days to learn more about homelessness. We learned about sharing our resources as we cooked a meal for $1/person. We took a privilege walk that demonstrated that many of the privileges we enjoy in life we are born with. Later, each of us was given a role to act out in a homelessness simulation.

This gave some insight into the overwhelming life situations that the homeless population deals with on a monthly basis. We also helped Lutherplace as they develop a sacred space that can be shared by the church with the community. The last thing we did was go on a civil rights scavenger hunt and talk about what was unique to the homeless community in D.C. This led to a discussion about how we can apply what we had experienced once we returned to Burlington. One of the things they would like to do is share their pictures and stories this fall at Tuesdays Together.

Youth Calendar for August-September 2010

PLANNING

AHEAD !!

Hello all, It is hard to believe that the end of July is here. The Youth Committee has been working on some great things for the youth this year. Here is what we have planned for August and September…. Sunday August 1, after the late service we will be painting the Youth Room. If anyone is interested in helping, we would greatly appreciate it. We will serve lunch. Little Luther League and Luther League will be starting the new year with a movie night Sunday night, August 22nd at 6pm in Luther Hall. Pizza, popcorn and drinks will be served. Luther League will begin to meet weekly at 6pm on Sunday, September 12th. We will continue to have dinner before our activity for the night. We will be having a murder mystery night on the first night. This year our theme will be: see, hear, act. The beginning of the year will focus on God’s active role in the world around us, God sightings. We will then spend some time on hearing God’s voice. Throughout the year we will be serving the community. On September 25th, we are planning on going to Carowinds to see Casting Crown, Kutlass, Brandon Heath, Fireflight, Yellow Cavalier, and the Skit Guys in concert. We can ride the rides and attend the concert for $38.99 if we pre-order our tickets. If you are interested in going please let Melinda Menz know at 270-6627 or [email protected] by August 12th so that we can buy the tickets and arrange for transportation. (we will need payment ahead for us to order) Schedule August September 8/01 Paint Youth Room after late service 9/12 Murder Mystery 8/12 Pre-order tickets for concert/Carowinds 9/19 See what you want 8/22 Movie Night for everyone 9/26 Creation 8/29 YAAC bingo We again will be asking parents to volunteer with meals, (for approximately 20) but will be asking that when you provide a meal that you plan on staying to help serve the kids and clean up afterwards. It makes it difficult for us to provide a quality program for the kids and also have appropriate supervision of them if one or more of us is left to clean up. We do understand that many of our youth do have younger siblings, many of our families in this situation just came as a family to serve/clean up, and also ate with the youth. We will be sending an email in the next few weeks for meal sign ups, so be on the look out for that. Enjoy the rest of your summer, Michele, Melinda and Tom

Careful readers of Mark’s gospel will discover that the writer favored a certain word. It indicates how quickly certain events transpired. The word is found four times in the first chapter of Mark and 19 more times in the remaining 15 chapters (NRSV). Choose the correct word: A. Momentarily B. Instantly C. Occasionally D. Immediately

Answer: D (It’s first used in Mark 1:12, NRSV.)

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil...Therefore take up the whole armor of God… —Ephesians 6:10,13a I am just back from my blended and extended family gathering. Participants included our four children, their spouses, four grandchildren, great-grandma and four dogs—ages 9 weeks to 90 years. It took a lot of planning and preparing to get all of us together, and to keep us content and fed. We had a great time, and grew closer as we do each year. This year, however, I came back exhausted. While recovering, I reflected on why being with those I love on vacation was so tiring. Each morning, I awakened to two grandchildren bouncing on my bed. By day, I was surrounded by lovely people—which left little room for this introvert to recharge. And I abandoned my daily workout and devotion routines, routines that ground me and help me manage stressful situations. I realize now that I simply didn’t prepare myself properly. I forgot to take with me the armor that gives me strength and protection. With Rally Day, confirmation classes and church activities fast approaching, remember to take into each day your routines, your shield of faith, your helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God! That it may be well with you! Tammy Devine, Diaconal Minister And ELCA Wellness Manager [email protected]
