Dear friends, Welcome to the School of Arts and Communication’s 2018-19 season at Pacific Lutheran University! This year we present an incredible array of events and performances featuring our talented students, faculty and guest artists — from intimate recitals to large-scale productions.

We have much to celebrate. We are committed to providing our students with an exceptional education and to building and enhancing our community through the study, practice, and understanding of artistic expression. We boast some of the region’s most outstanding performing arts venues — Lagerquist Concert Hall and the Karen Hille Phillips Center for the Performing Arts — that provide exemplary environments for learning and creativity.

Our 2018-19 season includes notable standout events from each of our programs and departments: the debut of our new Musical Theatre degree, with the first production Broadway Today! in September; the Washington Senate Debate in October; Art & Design’s Student Juried Exhibition in November; our spectacular Christmas concerts Winter Rose in December; Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro in January; University Wind Ensemble’s Homecoming Concert in February; the musical Sweeney Todd in March; Dance 2019: Collaborations in April; and culminating with our School of Arts and Communication Recognition Ceremony in May!

This calendar represents thousands of hours of student training, practice, and rehearsals under the expert guidance of our incredible School of Arts and Communication faculty. Our performances and events are some of the finest that you’ll see and hear anywhere — at a fraction of the ticket prices that you’d pay elsewhere, including many that are free. Tickets for our Christmas concerts go on sale online on Nov. 1. Further information regarding our Christmas concerts and ticket sales can be found at plu.edu/christmas. Also, continue to watch your local PBS stations for broadcasts this season of our spectacular 2015 concert, A Christmas Invitation, featuring renowned soprano and PLU alumna Angela Meade ’01. A special collector’s DVD of this incredible performance is also available at the Christmas link above.

Please visit us at plu.edu/soacevents for the most up-to-date listing of our events (schedules can change) and to purchase tickets. I encourage you to keep connected with us through our various media sources or directly with me at [email protected]. I look forward to seeing you at our events this season!

Warmest Regards,

Cameron Bennett, Dean

“The integration of liberal arts education, enticement of study away opportunities, and dedication to diversity, justice, and sustainability is why I chose PLU. I also felt that I could thrive as a student, and as an individual, in a community where I could interact more directly with my professors, and easily get to know my peers. During my time at PLU, I have been a member of Residence Hall Council as well as a Resident Assistant. For my senior year, I will be studying away in Chengdu, China during the Fall semester, and then focusing on my Art & Design and Chinese Studies capstones in the Spring.”

“As a senior in high school, I knew the PLU Music Department was the place for me. However, before beginning school here, I had never imagined the breadth of opportunities I would be able to take part in. I am incredibly grateful for my experiences singing in Choir of the West, conducting choral ensembles, and engaging with schools in the PLU community. This next January, I even have the opportunity to travel to Trinidad and Tobago to learn about the music of Trinidad Carnival! I am excited for the experiences to come in the rest of my time at PLU.”

“I came to PLU for President’s Weekend for the first time ever. Not only did I meet one of my best friends, but I ended up falling in love with the overall community and all the opportunities that the Theatre Department had to offer. I’ve acted in supporting and leading roles, been in musicals, comedies and dramas, and was even able to stage manage one of our spotlight shows. This coming Fall, I have the incredible opportunity to direct Tony nominated Constellations. I will continue to work in the scene shop, take voice lessons, be a tour guide, and support my friends in their various events throughout the School of Arts and Communication.”

“I chose to attend PLU over the other universities I was considering because the faculty was extremely welcoming and open. When I visited campus, I had an overwhelming feeling of comfort and home, and knew this was where I wanted to continue my education. I am currently a member of the National Theatre Honor Society Alpha Psi Omega at PLU and active within the theatrical community. I am going to be the stage manager for the first spotlight production of the 2018-19 theatre season, Broadway Today!, a musical theatre review including songs from shows on Broadway the past two seasons. I look forward to furthering my work in the theatre and continuing to build the larger arts community.”

Support SOACWe express our heartfelt appreciation to our many friends and supporters near and far. In 2017-18, 265 donors supported our School of Arts and Communication programs, facilities, and student scholarships. This support totaled almost $200,000, bringing the cumulative amount of lifetime donor support to $41.9 million dollars, including 52 endowed student scholarships!

The reasons for making a gift to the School of Arts and Communication are personal and varied. Every donation makes an incredible difference — whether you are grateful for your PLU experience and want to give back, you wish to leave a legacy to benefit future Lutes, you feel passionate about supporting an important cause or influential faculty mentor, or you simply want to take advantage of donor tax benefits. Our gratitude for your contribution is heartfelt and sincere.
