CONFIDENCE TO NEGOTIATE.

ALUMNI PROFILE: BRENDAN O’MARA (2010)

“As a contract negotiator for the Department of Defense, I am constantly analyzing cost and pricing data submitted by contractors and using the resultsof these analyses in my negotiations. My Mason MBA coursework in costaccounting and negotiations techniques, in particular, have really provided mewith a solid base of tools and skills to refine this process on the job.”

“Getting an MBA has given me the confidence that I know what I’m talkingabout. When I negotiate business deals now, I feel more at ease, more certainin my knowledge and my negotiating position. I can talk confidently about thingslike return on investment.”

A graduate of the University of Richmond, with a BA in economics, Brendan hasworked for the Department of Defense since 2004 and continued his job therewhile pursuing a MBA part-time.

“The most exciting—and worthwhile—part of the Mason MBA program was theMBA 795 Global Business Perspectives course,” explains Brendan. “Our class

traveled to Chile—and it was theexperience of a lifetime. Ourgroup’s assignment was to create a business plan forlaunching a particular U.S. company with a unique business model in Santiago.”

“The students I worked with onthe business plan have becomesome of my closest friends. Withlots of weekends and eveningscollaborating on the assignment—we started waybefore we traveled to SouthAmerica—we really developed aclose bond.”

“Our team received a lot of positive feedback from businessleaders in Santiago. Apparentlywe made such a convincing case

for launching the company, the Chilean executives suggested we go ahead anddo it for real. It was very gratifying.”

“This past January, I completed a month-long course at the University ofVirginia’s Darden School of Business, called the Navy Business ResourcesManagement Program. It was really gratifying for me to see that much of thematerial we were taught in the course I already knew from my classes atMason. I realized there and then that I had received an outstanding MBA education at George Mason. It’s been one of the best decisions of my life.”

THE MASON MBA:

INVALUABLE INSIGHTS TO

GROW A START-UP COMPANY.

ALUMNI PROFILE: J.J. CAMPBELL (2010)

“When I came into the program, I had very little knowledge of what marketing even was,”said J.J. Campbell, a 2010 graduate of theMason MBA program. At the May commencement, he was chosen as the MBAOutstanding Student of the Year, an awardgiven by the faculty. “My coursework gave mea whole new window into a field that hasturned out to be crucial to my success on thejob. I learned how to segment markets andthe importance of refining product offeringsto address those segments.”

The father of two children, with one on theway, J.J. received his undergraduate degree in

civil engineering from Virginia Tech. He worked in real estate for 9 years beforegoing back for a graduate degree in business, and continued to do so while pursuing his degree part-time.

J.J.’s experiences as an MBA student were somewhat unique in that he was ableto apply his learning to a start-up construction company he was managing—asmall subsidiary of the real estate firm where he currently works. “It was like apetrie dish,” explains J.J. “I took everything we were studying in marketing, strategy and business development and applied it to my experiences on the job. It’s made me a much better manager.”

“Before my MBA program, all our marketing efforts were like a shot in the dark—no planning. What I learned helped me fine-tune our entire approach to salesand business development. And we’ve been a lot more successful in our salesefforts as a result.”

“When I was looking at business schools, I wanted the best value. George Masonis a state university, and the tuition was more reasonable than other schools Iwas considering. But I don’t regret my choice one bit. I have been very impressedwith the quality of program and with the caliber of the professors and students. I feel I received as good, if not better an education, than I would have receivedfrom any other MBA program anywhere. It certainly has made me a more well-rounded person.”

“Another important lesson I learned from my exchanges with other students. The Mason MBA program attracts a wide mix of students—people from all different backgrounds: IT, the nonprofit sector, finance. Everybody brings unique perspectives, but I also came to realize that all businesses basically face thesame types of problems and challenges. That gave me more confidence. I realizeI can transfer the problem-solving skills I have honed in real estate to otherfields. It will give me a lot more flexibility in my future career endeavors.”
