Editor’s NoteIt has been an exciting month full of drama and lively moments. AFCON of course being the main source of all that. As usual, your true sports partner Kenya Broadcasting Corporation(KBC) was at hand, to bring the entire action packed event live.

Off the pitch Kenyans were their usual dramatic self especially on Social Media where KBC with their hashtag #AFCONikoKBC was subject to banter the best being ‘KBC ikikohoa munaitika.’

Coro FM 99.5 celebrated its 18th year anniversary in style by rewarding one of its loyal listeners with a brand new vehicle.

Finally, the new US ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCater checked in for an interview in our

Swahili breakfast show on PWANI FM 103.1

It promises to be an interesting and captivating read. Enjoy!

MD’S PICK It is a pleasure for Kenya Broadcasting Corporation to deliver all the 52 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) matches live; with great local commentary and real time analysis both on and off the pitch.

We appreciate the spirit and passion demonstrated by Kenyans in AFCON that renewed our sense of patriotism and celebrated the national team who were up against traditional giants and eventual finalists.

AFCON broadcasting rights were expensive but we did our best, with the support of our sponsors Communication Authority(CA), Ministry of Environment, Central Bank of

Kenya(CBK), Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation(KDIC), Kenya Film Commission(KFC), Safaricom, Startimes and Equity Bank, among others. They demonstrated remarkable faith in KBC and, for this, we thank them.

We also bring you success stories on the activation of 10 new transmission sites in various parts of the country which were partly supported by the Spanish government that has boosted significantly the viewership experience in areas that had hitherto no access to the KBC TV signals.

We’re engaged in an ambitious expansion project through which we hope to have 95%

coverage in terms of population and reach.

We invite Kenyans to go through our wide array of offerings including a comprehensive news coverage that has new segments like News Check. We also have new programs such as Next Meal, Ashoka, Forbidden Passion and The Wives done by Hollywood award winning actor, Benjamin Onyango.

We do appreciate your views and encourage you to interact with us through the various feedback channels that are available both on TV, Radio and Online.

Once CS ICT Joe Mucheru an-nounced that, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) had clinched the Free-to-Air broadcast rights for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), it was nirvana for Ken-yans as not only had the country qualified for the tourney but now they could enjoy watching and lis-tening to all matches in the com-fort of their homes. Interestingly, the announcement also attracted a tide of key endorsements from President Uhuru Kenyatta, Depu-ty President William Ruto and the Cabinet Secretary of Sports Amina Mohamed among many.

At Broadcasting House, Sauti House in Mombasa, the Western Station in Kisumu and all trans-mission stations, the Corpora-tion kept the promise by smooth transmission of the 52 matches of the football extravaganza on KBC Channel 1 and 14 radio stations was perfect.

At the upper echelons, the Man-aging Director Dr. Naim Bilal led the agenda at the management backed by a working sub-com-mittee composed of 13 mem-bers drawn from all departments and chaired by Elynah Shive-ka, a renowned sports journal-ist and producer. Each member of the sub-committee checked everything from respective de-partment to eliminate room for error.

Way before the first game on 21st June, 2019 staged at the Cairo In-ternational Stadium where a goal by Mahmoud Hassan at 41st min-

ute saw Egypt win against Zim-babwe, #AFCONikoKBC trended and this was the case throughout AFCON up to the 19th July, 2019. This was sustained by a well-craft-ed social media strategy that webbed real time tweets, stories, and video clips. Interestingly, KBC staff too widened our footprint online by posting selfies and short videos on a variety of subjects.

As much as Radio Taifa, Pwani FM and the English Service had huge traction, vernacular stations spe-cifically Coro FM, Iftiin FM, May-ienga FM, Ingo FM, Kitwek FM, Minto FM, Mwatu FM, Mwago FM,

To our boys we wish you the best of luck, after 15 years you will be in glory to Kenyans. The discussion we had before you left, it’s great to win and we look

forward and pray for your win.But what’s most important is that you come home knowing that you did your best and gave it your all. Good luck team

    Kenya, good luck Harambee Stars.“

Nosim FM and Turkana Sub-Ser-vice were praised by the audience for bringing quality football com-mentaries in languages they un-derstood. They further requested for more sports e.g. the Kenya Pre-mier League and the English Pre-mier League. From the Corporate world, advertisers forwarded pos-itive feedback on the outstanding execution of commentaries, ad-verts and presenter mentions.

On television, apart from running sterling analysis from an array of experts ranging from football coaches to former Harambee Stars players on what worked or what failed from a technical angle, KBC roped in women analysts to infuse unique perspectives.

During the AFCON season, everything flowed like a well-oiled machine. Normal program-ming and news were reorgan-ized in such a way that there was no interference with the games. In cases whereby we had two matches being played at the same time Y254 our other station that is youth oriented aired the extra game in real-time. TV Graphics Unit was also on standby to gen-erate and amend adverts as per clients’ tastes.

Away from Online, Television and Radio, the Marketing Department dotted billboards in major entry and exit points in Nairobi such as Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way and Thika Road with KBC-AFCON adverts. Other emerging cities in Kenya namely Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret were not left behind as they had pinned messages on

billboards as well as experiential road-shows whereby leading artists such as Dufla upped the tempo and waltzed the crowds propagating the tagline #AF-CONikoKBC.

The department also strategically pub-lished adverts on MyGov, The Daily Na-tion and The Standard to reach out to a unique segment in the society that is off the electronic media platforms.

In addition, all KBC staff were branded with t-shirts first as buy-in in terms of owning the games and pushing the AF-CON message to households and neigh-borhoods.

The last pre-match analysis on 19th July, 2019 was graced by the Commu-nications Authority’s Director General Eng. Francis Wangusi who praised KBC for doing a commendable service to Kenyans. The pre-match analysis was followed by cake-cutting celebrations

    KBC SCoreS Big in AFCon

for successfully hosting 2019 AFCON led by KBC MD’s representative the Advertising Manager Carolyne Mutunga.

The feedback from our fans was over-whelming, we felt the love and light, as the final whistle blew and Algeria trounced Senegal 1-0 after 29 years wait so was a general consensus and paroxysm that in-deed KBC is back; as the true sports partner and the leading source of quality news and programming in Kenya.

In its quest to improve signal strength and coverage, KBC through it’s Digital Video Broad-casting Terrestrial (DVBT) ex-pansion drive, has widened its reach to 10 new population cor-ridors across the country. This was done to areas that hitherto had no access to TV services such as Maralal, Wa-jir, Hola in Tana river County, Lamu, Mpeketoni, parts of Kilifi, Kwale County up to Vanga and Bondo in Siaya.Systems upgrade were also conducted in Webuye and Nya-hururu to improve the viewer-ship experiences.

The Ag. Technical Services Manager, Mr. Kanyi Gichina, noted the improvement in the signal strength and reach in the aforementioned areas and was upbeat about the whole

exercise promising a change of fortunes in terms of viewership experiences and numbers. Since the digital migration in 2015, KBC’s signal distribution subsidiary, Signet has endeav-ored to improve the infrastruc-ture of terrestrial TV throughout the country.Consequently, the broadcaster engaged in the expansion pro-gram, that started late last year and was concluded in June to perfectly dovetail with KBC’s transmission of the Africa Cup of nations (AFCON) that was re-layed in Channel 1 TV and Y254 TV both of the KBC stable.Mr. Kanyi further observed that, “the tough work begins now, our responsibility is to ensure continuity in maintaining the quality signal, so as to meet the audience expectations.”

The Management through the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (MoICT) has written to the National Treasury requesting for financial support and interventions to fund the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation Staff Retirement Benefit Scheme to the tune of Kshs 2,721,031,000.

Speaking during the Annual General Meeting of the scheme on 26th July, 2019 at Broadcasting House, the Managing Director Dr Naim Bilal outlined the Corporations plans of offsetting the actuarial deficit of Kshs 2.7billion as well as the outstanding debt totaling to Kshs 856million in contribution arrears.

hErE’S hOW WE INTEND TO PAy ThE DEBT

The MD explained the measures the management was taking to see KBC offset its outstanding debts as well as have a sustainable plan going forward.

Dr Bilal through a cabinet memo seeks to have the KBC Act amended, for the National Broadcaster to be fully funded to enable it achieve its public mandate. He further added that the memo seeks to have all government institutions bring at least 50% of their advertising budget to KBC and also have government institutions pay for the live coverage given by KBC for their events.

Members of staff were given a leap of faith and hope when the MD added that Management was working on a comprehensive HR Board paper to touch on all personal issues which once approved will address the gaps. A dentist gets to the root of the problem and that is why regular dental checkups are recommended. In this regard Kisumu staff were beneficiaries of a free dental check up on 25th May, 2019 through a partnership with Lake Dental Clinic.

The staff went through a visual examination and discussed various treatment options. According to Dr. Owuor, the state of oral health care in Kenya is still unacceptably low and the public and policy makers are not well sensitized on issues around it.

    Photo/Courtesy

Dr. Owuor explained that despite high prevelance, a negligible proportion of Kenyans seek dental treatment and the majority do so only when have a pain and discomfort.

Dr. Owuor was keen on sensitizing staff on oral cancer which has a high prevelance in younger, nonsmoking individuals. He shared tips with the staff on dental hygiene like brushing twice daily, flossing, avoiding sugary food, using toothpaste containing fluoride among others. He concluded by urging staff to have an effective prevention response than cure.

The Lake dental team was led by Dr. Felix Owour who was accompanied by Ms. Nancy Okuta.
