The Messenger The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Olney, Maryland June 2015 “A Trust” “We give Thee but Thine own, Whate’er the gift may be; All that we have is Thine alone, A trust, O Lord, from Thee.” (LSB 781). In many churches this verse is sung when the offerings are received in a worship service. The stanza reminds us of God’s loving nature and who we are in relation to him; what God does for us and gives us and how we respond to his generosity. We are recipients of God’s varied grace. As such we acknowledge in the Creed that God is the Creator and Owner of all. God owns all things and everything in heaven and on earth belongs to him. Even we ourselves – all that we are and all that we have – are his. We are his work of art. We are his because he created us, preserves us, redeemed us, and keeps us in the faith. As the receivers of what he has done and given us, we in turn give of our first fruits to Christ and his church. The hymn reminds us that our life is a “trust.” God thinks enough of us to entrust his creation to us. That includes our generic “daily bread,” everything we need to live each day, from food to sleep. But he’s also entrusted us with our relationships. Think of your family and friends as a gift. How do they enrich your life? How are you a blessing to them? We are made to love/serve one another as Jesus loves/serves us. Life is so fragile and can change and end way too quickly. “Be blessed to bless” – what a great way to begin, live and end each day as a trust. Finally, Jesus has entrusted himself to us as our Provider. Even on our worst days our risen Lord and Savior commits himself to us as our friend of friends. As our sins abound (and they do!), his providing forgiveness and grace abounds even more. What can Jesus do for you today? What can you do for him? Trust is mutual – God freely bestows his grace to us and we acknowledge his goodness by our lives of service. As we begin the summer months, be aware of the following June activities at Good Shepherd. Steak night, the last Wednesday supper, is June 3. On Sunday, June 7, we will be confirming seven of our confirmands with a reception to follow. Josh Fowler and two other Scouts will be awarded their prestigious Eagle rank here at Good Shepherd on Saturday, June 13. Flag Day is Sunday, June 14, which is also the last Sunday for Sunday School until September 13. Father’s Day is June 21, the first Sunday we commence our 10 a.m. summer Eucharist worship schedule through September 6, Labor Day weekend. Enjoy your summer and please don’t take a worship vacation, instead take Christ with you. Remember, “All that we have is Thine alone, a trust, O Lord, from Thee.”

“A Trust”

“We give Thee but Thine own, Whate’er the gift may be; All that we have is Thine alone, A trust, O Lord, from Thee.” (LSB 781).

Thank you from the Frank Corn family

My family and I wish to thank Pastor Pat for all his knowledge and help and the many hours of meeting with my family to help us with the appropriate Psalms, hymns, and so much more where we needed guidance when my husband, Frank, died on January 12, 2015. We could not have gotten through this without his help and support and the help of so many of the good people of our church who helped at the Memorial Service and the reception. I don’t know how they did it all. The reception was amazing.

Many people told me it was the finest service they had ever been to. We would like to thank our organist, Maria Sampogna, for the beautiful music, as well as Pete and Janet Stadler for the altar flowers. And so important, all the prayers and cards we received, that helped us to get through a very difficult time.

Thanks to all of you from all of us,

Barbara Corn and family

Jim and Jill Ruspi 50th Wedding Anniversary

June 13, 2015

We are so proud to congratulate our parents (and grandparents) on their commitment to each other. Fifty years of marriage is an accomplishment few couples achieve. Our parents continue to be role models. They rarely put their own needs or wants first. Through difficult times, they remain committed to each other, their family and their faith in God. They have taught us dignity, compassion, forgiveness and a lot about love. We honor you Mom and Dad!

All our Love, Angela and Anthony Hoffman Brianna, Dominic, Sierra and Marissa If you would like to acknowledge their anniversary, cards can be sent to them at:

7111 Brink Road Laytonsville MD 20882

Shepherd’s Care Children’s Center Emily Cottone, Director

301-570-7566

Dear Members of LCGS, I think everyone enjoyed our Graduation Program on May 22nd. We showed a slide show that I am sure brought tears to many parent’s eyes. It was delightful to watch the children’s joy when they saw themselves on the “big screen.

The last day of school was bittersweet. We were sad to say goodbye to the children, but also so proud of them. I could not be more pleased with how this school year turned out. SCCC is truly blessed to have such wonderful teachers.

Our Summer Program is in full swing and we are having a blast. We have 22 students enrolled this year!

Thank you to all of you for your continued support. I am forever grateful. Sincerely, Emily Cottone

John Stelben I am graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Game Design & Development. Over my four years at RIT I have created multiple projects and games, both for class and outside of class. I have participated in multiple hackathons and I also helped with two internships. In the first, iD Tech Camps, I was an instructor leading programming projects for middle and high schoolers. In the second I created software applications for a small company in Ithaca, RP Solutions. I do not have plans for after graduation, but at the moment I'm still looking for a job, and if that does not work out, I will be going to grad school.

“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”

"The Horse and his Boy" written by C.S. Lewis

What's that you say? Two books! Are you out of your mind? Well let's remember these two books add up to only 413 pages so we can do this. I have confidence in all of you. So let us pull together team. We can do this! And if we were really good, we would pick a young person dear to our hearts and read a chapter to them each night. Stories make wonderful memories and C.S. Lewis is a wonderful story teller. For those of us that are on the down side of the hill it will keep us from reaching the bottom so quickly. And I have a feeling it will bring back memories of our youth. So young and old join us in the Family life Wing on Sunday the 14th and bring along a little oats and hay topped with a cube of sugar to share with your fellow readers.

The Lunch Bunch will meet next on Tuesday,
