Joe Louis• Joe Louis was born on May 13, 1914• He was the World Heavyweight Champion from 1937-1949• His nickname is the “Brown Bomber”• Joe Louis helped make boxing popular• Joe Louis’s impact was felt across the United States • Joe Louis was known as the first African American to achieve the status of

hero within the United States• Many African Americans hoped Joe would show the world the strength &

pride of all Americans• His most famous fight was against a Germany, Max Schmeling• He lost his first fight to Schmeling in 1935, but regain his title with a win in

the re-match to Schmeling in 1936.• The re-match still is one of the most famous sporting events of the 20th

century. It gave hope to all Americans.
