Saint of the Week: Pope Saint John XXIII Although few people had as great an impact on the 20th century as Pope John XXIII, he avoided the limelight as much as possible. Indeed, one writer has noted that his “ordinariness” seems one of his most remarkable qualities. The firstborn son of a farming family in Sotto il Monte, near Bergamo in northern Italy, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was always proud of his down-to-earth roots. In Bergamo’s diocesan seminary, he joined the Secular Franciscan Order. After his ordination in 1904, Fr. Roncalli returned to Rome for canon law studies. He soon worked as his bishop’s secretary, Church history teacher in the seminary, and as publisher of the diocesan paper. His service as a stretcher-bearer for the Italian army during World War I gave him a firsthand knowledge of war. In 1921, Fr. Roncalli was made national director in Italy of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. He also found time to teach at a seminary in the Eternal City.In 1925, he became a papal diplomat, serving first in Bulgaria, then in Tur-key, and finally in France. During World War II, he became well acquainted with Orthodox Church leaders. With the help of Germany’s ambassador to Turkey, Archbishop Roncalli helped save an estimated 24,000 Jewish people. named a cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953, he was finally a residential bishop. A month short of entering his 78th year, Cardinal Roncalli was elected pope, taking the name John after his father and the two patrons of Rome’s cathedral, St. John Lateran. Pope John took his work very seriously but not himself. His wit soon became proverbial, and he began meeting with political and religious leaders from around the world. In 1962, he was deeply involved in efforts to resolve the Cuban missile crisis. His most famous encyclicals were Mother and Teacher (1961) and Peace on Earth (1963). Pope John XXIII enlarged the membership in the College of Cardinals and made it more international. At his address at the opening of the Second Vatican Council, he criticized the “prophets of doom” who “in these modern times see nothing but prevarication and ruin.” Pope John XXIII set a tone for the Council when he said, “The Church has always opposed… errors. Nowadays, however, the Spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity.”

“Good Pope John” died on June 3, 1963. Saint John Paul II beatified him in 2000, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2014. His feast day is October 11. Pope Saint John XXIII, pray for us!

Pocas personas tuvieron un impacto tan grande en el siglo XX como el Papa Juan XXIII, quien evito el protagonismo en lo posible. Music Notes: The Kyrie and Gloria By Tim Horneman, Music Director Last week, kicking off my new series why we sing things at Mass, we started with the entrance hymn, making the point that each part of Mass has meaning. Today, we address the Kyrie (or the “Lord, have mercy”) and the Gloria (“Glory to God in the highest…”). These are part of the Mass ordinary, which are the parts of the Mass that don’t change from week to week, unlike hymns, readings, or prayers. Sometimes, we recite the Kyrie, and other times, we sing it. Either way, it prepares us for Mass by reminding us that we are in need of a Savior, because we are sinners. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ document “Sing to the Lord” refers to the Kyrie as an ancient invocation; indeed, “Lord, have mercy” is said several times in the Bible, both in Psalms and in the Gospels. When it is sung, it is usually done in a subdued manner, with many musical settings in minor (sad-sounding keys). After the Kyrie is sung or recited, we sing the Gloria – during weekend Masses, if there is a Gloria, it will always be sung. The prayer is a “very ancient and venerable hymn in which the Church, gathered in the Holy Spirit, glorifies and entreats the Father and the Lamb,” ac-cording to the USCCB’s General Instruction on the Roman Missal. As such, its musical treatment is generally more positive sounding than the Kyrie, with most settings in major (happier) keys and more complex, often louder instrumentations. However, at certain times, we don’t sing the Gloria – penitential seasons (Lent and Advent, save for the feast of the Immaculate Conception) and weekdays (unless a weekday feast calls for the Gloria to be sung). That time without singing it enables us to sing it with more joy when the Christmas and Easter seasons come around. After we ask God’s forgiveness and sing His glory, we are ready to listen to the word of God. There are sung parts in that as well, and we will discuss them next time. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes human relationships go awry, but Christ s choice for us is irrevocable. In marriage celebrations, the Church always recalls God s faithfulness to help prepare married couples for

enduring the inevitable rough spots. The Byzantine liturgy does this by adorning the couple with crowns that remind them of the martyr s crown. The couple therefore takes on a vocation of

witnessing to the sacredness of life in all of its suffering and joy, and of keeping their eyes fixed on the banquet of heaven.

In Eastern theology, people have a liturgical vocation to give God praise, and marriage fits within that plan. It is not so much saying prayers that counts, but becoming prayer. Interestingly, in this liturgy the couple never utters a word other than joining in the community s chants; there are no marriage vows as such. There is therefore not a hint of our Western Christian sense that marriage is a legal contract. Rather, it is all about living out one s baptismal vocation, embracing the cross,

pouring oneself out in love, and opening to the grace of the Holy Spirit.

unirse a los cánticos de las comunidades; no hay votos matrimoniales como tales. Por lo tanto, no hay un indicio de nuestro sentido cristiano occidental de que el matrimonio es un contrato legal.

Más bien, se trata de vivir la vocación bautismal, abrazar la cruz, derramarse en el amor y abrirse a la gracia del Espíritu Santo.
