It is hard to imagine that we have come to the end of another year at

GMAC! Spring is slowly making its appearance, soon the tree flowers will be

budding, our April 14th meeting will come and go, NTI will soon after follow

and then all that is left is the June dinner. Time flies when you are having

fun! I want to take a moment to reflect back on the courage that we at

GMAC have shown over the last year throughout all of our various endeav-

ors.

Our education committee has done some extraordinary work plan-

ning and producing sessions starting with cultural diversity and an AACN

National discussion (in which GMAC was

chosen to participate) lead by our very

own Linda Bay and Beth Hammer. This

was followed by the fascinating panel

regarding organ donation that so many of

us were brought to tears by the organ

recipient panel member. Finally, last

month, we were enthralled by a discus-

sion on burn patients of both heat and

frostbite followed up with a discussion

about perioperative near misses –which

while serious, was presented by a pretty funny CRNA! Please join us in April

for our presentations on PTSD and safety during escalating situations (self

protection). Next years sessions are already starting to come together and

we are grateful to our members for some great ideas! Finally, the Educa-

tion Committee has succeeded in planning and securing a site and speaker

for a fall 2016 CCRN/PCCN review course. Stay tuned for further details!

Another added perk to members this year was the addition of exhibi-

tor/vendors at our educational sessions. GMAC leadership thought that this

would be an added benefit to our existing members, students, and poten-

tial members to have either hospitals, product vendors or other exhibitors

join us at our meetings. Product vendors may even parallel our education

sessions which is an added bonus. Over the last few months, we have had

Froedtert Hospital, Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, Clement J. Zablocki VA

Medical Center, and The Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Network join us at our

meetings. Coming up in April, we will have Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin,

as well as, a Wellness Advocate from doTERRA essential oils to complement our PTSD presentation and

to follow our Courageous Care theme and self-care.

We also re-started the Outreach committee and combined the Social Media committee to go hand

in hand with it. Jessica Panfil, our current Member-at-

Large graciously volunteered to head up this gigantic

task and really has shown us that she is up to the

challenge! Most recently, the GMAC webpage has got-

ten a complete revamping, so check it out if you have-

n’t already! We have also gained over three hundred

followers on Facebook where we are now posting daily

information either pertinent to the chapter such as

upcoming events, pictures from those events, AACN

National posts and pictures, as well as other feeds

and posts that are interesting to the field of nursing

whether or not they are critical care related. Please

like, comment, and share these posts with your

friends and family. Remember to share GMAC with your coworkers and friends!! Every spark of interest is

a potential member or maybe someday a potential nurse.

As for Outreach, we continued with our annual support of the Al’s Run, successfully com-

pleted the Toy’s for Tots Toy Drive (a lot of donations this year so thank you to all

who contributed) and our first family and friends outing to Sunburst Ski/Tubing /

Snowboarding event. We look forward to more Outreach events in the future both

nursing and healthcare related as well as family/fun oriented. Our plan is to con-

tinue on yearly with our Courageous Self Care by taking time for ourselves in be-

tween taking care of our patients and community. We hope to see you all there!

Finally, a shout out to Holly Clanton and our membership team who sit at

our education session greeting each of you and ensuring that our membership is

up to date with national. We could not do it without all of you, so thank you! The

membership committee does a wonderful job of enticing new

members, but I have to also encourage our existing members to

get out there and promote GMAC. We need to continue to pro-

mote membership and our chapter in order to continue to suc-

ceed. New areas that we are always trying to reach are those

besides critical care. As many of you know our very own chapter

is made up of a melting pot of specialties, not just critical care.

If you know of any facilities, departments, or even specific nurs-

es who are interested but would like someone to talk to, please,

let a member of GMAC leadership know and we would love to

chat with anyone!!

Message from the President — Continued

As we head into the end of year, I ask you all again to consider taking the Courageous step of join-

ing your GMAC leadership. We have positions open for President, Vice President (Education Chair), Mem-

ber at Large, all elect positions, Board Learning Partner, and Committee Chair Positions such as Social

Media/Outreach. Lori Grade is our Treasurer for 2016-2017 as she has been our elect this year and I

have already heard from some others that they would like to keep their positions for next year or throw

their hat in the ring for other positions for next year as well, but we do take nominations and vote as a

chapter so please get your nominations to me BEFORE the April 14th meeting as we will be voting for

2016-2017 board positions at the April 14th meeting. We will also try to send out a ballot survey for

those who are unable to make the meeting who would like to vote. If you have any questions on the role

responsibilities please do not hesitate to ask myself, those of us currently in the

role, or those who have served in the role in years past. Just remember, you are

never in this alone! There is so much support from past leaders-we are truly

blessed to have those resources at our fingertips!

Although we aren’t done yet, I want to thank each and every one of you, for

your membership, your attendance, your support and your dedication to GMAC.

Each year we strive to make GMAC the best chapter that it can be and I hope that

you have enjoyed this year. I am grateful to you all for allowing me to be your Presi-

dent and to the Board members, Committee chairs and members, and all the re-

sources I have called upon to help me throughout this last year. I am honored and

blessed to represent GMAC and work with every single one of you.

Happy Spring!! I just wanted to take a few minutes to thank you, our members, for allowing me to be your

treasurer for the past 2 years. This position has taught me many things about myself, finances and our leadership

team.

As part of the leadership team, we found value in our members and in the succession of leadership. That

is why we are sponsoring once again leaders to attend NTI in New Orleans in May. Our President, Treasurer-elect,

Member-at -Large and Secretary will each receive $500.00 from our funds currently in savings. We anticipate

them returning to us with enthusiasm and skills to help us successfully serve GMAC, each other, our patients and

their families.

We will continue to spend funds where we find value for our chapter. We have kept cost of membership

down with several opportunities for CEU’s and networking within our local area. We are so grateful to all who have

shown their courage this year, doing things they might not ordinarily do but having fun and learning while doing it.

This brings me to our June meeting, a little less formal than usual with more fun and festivities for personal care. I

am looking forward to learning the next theme and many of the NTI tales that will undoubtedly come about. It will

be worth it all when we as a chapter can be recognized for excellence in the future. Remember it is not too late to

let someone know you are interested in being part of the future leadership team. I will see you next at the educa-

tion meeting in April. Thank you again for this wonder-

ful experience. Wells Fargo Checking $ 4,886.57

The education committee has been conducting business via emails. The discussions have in-

cluded feedback on the June event; verification/confirmation of speakers scheduled for the remainder

of this fiscal year and the first two meetings next fall.

A major focus of considerations has been aspects of the CCRN/PCCN Review Course. This plan-

ning is proceeding well, and as soon as contracts are signed we will begin officially advertising the de-

tails --- you will be receiving flyers and registration forms. If you have any questions in the interim,

please feel free to contact me.

Those of you who were at the February education session know that we have chosen to take a

different route for our June dinner this year and go along the lines of AACN President McQuillan’s theme

of Courageous Care. One line in her address at NTI last year when announcing her theme has stuck with

me this last year, “We also demonstrate Courageous Care when we recognize our own need and take

the time to renew and recharge ourselves.”

Members at the February meeting were given 3 different options for a June dinner and the win-

ning vote was for a Life Expressions Decor event. For those who don’t know what this is you can visit

www.lifeexpressiondecor.com to see what they are about. We have an independent consultant (or more

depending on our group size) coming to a location of our choosing to help us make and take our own

boards. The GMAC Board has chosen 3 options (vinyl applications/sayings) that you will be able to

choose from. You will get to paint your own boards, distress if you so choose, and apply your saying to

your board. The best part…you go home with it that night!

We will more than likely have a cash bar and appetizers to go along with the event. Date and loca-

tion to be determined, but space will be limited so if this is something that interests you, keep your eye

out for the reservation forms and mail them in as soon get them to reserve your spot!

We hope that you enjoy the idea of a fun night out with a relaxing, creative project that you will

get to take home and remember the evening and your GMAC friends by for a long time to come!

If you have any questions or any ideas for a venue, please do not hesitate to let anyone on the

Board know.

Courageous Care was the theme at the 2016 Midwest Conference sponsored by the Northwest

Chicago Area Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. I was one of 380 participants

at this 2 day conference which was held at the Eaglewood Resort and Spa in Itasca, IL (near O’hare) on

March 21 & 22.

It was arranged like a national conference in which there was a morning keynote speaker fol-

lowed by breakout sessions, which had 4 options to choose from. Speakers included National AACN

President Karen McQuillan, Past AACN Board Member Linda Bay, as well as other national and local

speakers. A total of 36 class options were available with topics ranging from 2015 ACLS guidelines,

Substance withdrawal, Litigation risks, Caring for self and becoming a mindful nurse, End of life care in

the ICU, Missionary nursing, Sepsis, Burn care, Trauma, Skin and nutrition management, Stroke, Deliri-

um, etc. Industrial sponsors were present to display and share the newest tech-

nology from Stryker, Getinge Group, Physio-Control, Sage and Abbott.

Unlike national conferences at convention centers, food was plentiful with

complimentary snacks and drinks available throughout the day and Stryker

sponsored a fantastic dinner meeting focusing on early mobility in the ICU at a

local Italian restaurant. There was something for everyone not just those that

work in an ICU environment. Consider attending next year, you won’t be disap-

pointed. Courageous care is contagious when we all work together to provide

the best care possible to the patients and families we serve.

GMAC is the local professional "home" for nurses in South-

eastern Wisconsin who work with patients who are acutely

or critically ill. With over 85,000 members, AACN is the

largest specialty nursing organization in the world, repre-

senting the interests of more than 500,000 nurses. The

association is dedicated to providing our members with the

knowledge and resources necessary to provide optimal

care to patients along the critical care continuum.

The goal of GMAC is to:

Uphold the American Association of Critical-Care Nurs-

es' vision, mission, and values at the local level.

Support nurses working in a variety of acute and criti-

cal care settings, whose patients require specialized

knowledge and skills to assure optimal outcomes. Our

members work in intensive care units, medical and surgical

- telemetry units, interventional radiology, emergency de-

partments, on transport teams and are faculty at ar-

ea colleges and universities.

Support includes educational programs, networking

with professional colleagues, mentoring relationships and

scholarships.

Promote quality care of acutely and critically ill pa-

tients in Southeastern Wisconsin.
