“The Monkey’s Paw” | W.W. Jacobs (1902) Poster Project
Task: Individually or in pairs, create a poster with the following literary components. Plot diagram: Draw a plot diagram for the story and briefly caption each major event (introduction, initial incident, etc.) /7 Character: Choose 2 characters from the story to complete a character profile for each including the following: /4
o 2 character traits for each character (4 in total) o an example and/or quote selected from the story supporting each trait
Conflict: State and explain 2 major conflicts in the story. Describe each conflict
including the following: /4
o the opposing forces/type of conflict: ______ vs. _______ o explanation of why conflict exists
Foreshadowing: State 3 examples and/or quotes of foreshadowing in the story. Briefly explain how the example hints at what’s to come later in the story. /6 Suspense: Choose 3 quotes and briefly explain of how each quote creates suspense in the story. /6 Irony: State 2 examples of irony, identify what type of irony it is and briefly explain why it is ironic. /6 Theme: Write 2 detailed and thought-provoking theme statements. Each statement should be one complete sentence. /4
Creative Writing: USING AT LEAST 5 OF THE VOCAB TERMS GIVEN, choose ONE of the following options. (1.5-2 typed pages, 12 point font) /10
1) Write a prologue (comes before) for the story. Possible ideas:
• What is the backstory of the White family? • How did the sergeant-major come by the monkey’s paw? What were
his wishes? • Why did the first man wish for death as his last wish?
2) Write an epilogue (comes after) for the story. Possible ideas:
• Write the last scene from Herbert’s perspective. • How do the Whites deal with monkey’s paw? • Does the paw go to somebody else? Does the cycle continue?
Visuals: The poster should contain coloured visuals that are eye-catching and engaging. /10 Layout: The poster should be neatly presented and easy to read. /5 TOTAL: /62
