The moon
Why does moon “rise” and change position?
Earth rotates at 15o/hour
Why do we only see one side of the moon?
What occurs.What we see.
We only see one side because
rotation = revolution!
Moon—like ALL objects—has an eccentric orbit.
Moon DOES NOT make light (only sun does
that!)
Moon reflecting sunlight makes phases!
Earth also has phases!
The diagram below shows the Moon in different positions as it revolves around Earth, as observed from above the North Pole (NP).
Which image correctly represents the Moon at position 1, as observed from Earth?
The diagram below shows the Moon orbiting Earth as viewed from space above the North Pole. The Moon is
shown at eight different positions in its orbit.
At which position is the Moon “full”?At which positions is the Moon a “quarter”?
The diagram below shows the Moon orbiting Earth as viewed from space above the North Pole. The Moon is
shown at eight different positions in its orbit.
Diagram 1 shows the Moon in its orbit at four positions labeled A, B, C, and D. Diagram 2 shows a phase of the Moon
as viewed from New York State.
At which labeled Moon position would the phase of the Moon shown in diagram 2 be observed from
New York State?
(1) A (3) C
(2) B (4) D
X
If the moon takes 27.3 days to revolve around the Earth, why do the phases
take closer to 30 days?
It’s all about the
motions…
Takes 29.5 days!
When moon is back where it started (27.3 d later) the position to the sun has changed!
While moon revolves around Earth,
Earth is revolving
around sun.
BTWThe same is true for our day!
Remember the missing 3 min and 56 s…..
Well here they are!
How many days are required for the Moon to go from one full-Moon phase to the next full-Moon phase
when viewed from Earth?
(1) 24 (2) 27.3 (3) 29.5 (4) 365
