We somehow

patrons, our

friends and

families and

ourselves.

PRESIDENTWelcome to the final production of the year, Nine. It seems that

is was only yesterday that I welcomed you to the first show of theseason back in October. Time flies when you're having fun.

And that's what we do here at SLOC, have fun. Amid the variouscrises that arise during the year during each production, be it lackof volunteers, lack of money, lack of audience, leaky roofs, illness, bad weather (not much this year, thank goodness)...through it all,we somehow manage to entertain and amuse our patrons, ourfriends and families and ourselves,

To our season subscribers who have been with us all season,

THANK YOU! We hope you were moved by the thought provoking and provocative Son^ For A New World. Perhaps we got youinto the holiday spirit with Nuncrackers featuring the Little Sistersof Hoboken. Did you enjoy visiting SLOCs beginnings withSullivan & Gilbert Now we come full circle with Nine, and the

close of another season.

This time of the season is a little like New Year's Eve... reflection

of the year past and anticipation of the year ahead. We took a riskthis year with four SLOC premieres. Our audiences enjoyed theproductions, but we would be kidding ourselves if we consideredthis season a "box office" bonanza. What did we do wrong? Whatdid we do right? What did we accomplish? What can we improve? That is the fine line that artistic organizations often walk: artisticsuccess vs. financial success.

It's our hope that next season, our 80th, will prove to be both.We begin with another SLOC premiere The Full Monty, a musicaladaptation of the popular movie of the same name. Next up, inDecember, is the classic, familiar story of Oliver Twist, Lionel Bart'sOliver! March brings another first for SLOC, Once On This Island,a fable about true love amid class struggles. Finally, we close with thepopular Hello, Dolly! 'Wt also are in the planning stages of somespecial events throughout the year to celebrate our 80th birthday.

Please consider purchasing a season subscription. Details can befound elsewhere in the Playbill. We can also use your financialsupport with your tax-deductible contribution. Your financialsupport makes it possible for us to keep bringing quality musicaltheatre to the city and county of Schenectady.

It has been my pleasure, as President, to welcome you at eachshow and share a little bit of my love for theatre with you. Have anice summer and please come back in the fall and help us celebrateour 80th anniversary season.

Help us celebrate

SLOG'S 80TH SEASONWhat do you get when you take unemployed steeiworkers, wives who enjoy

watching male strippers and a bold idea to make some quick cash? SchenectadyLight Operas premiere of T/je Full Monty, our first show of the season. Watchthe fun when these men hold auditions, maneuver a rehearsal place andblackmail their former boss. Take the journey with them when they find theirself-esteem and learn the importance of family and friendship. Fun, laughter, music and MORE!

Next is Oliver! A Charles Dickens tale of a young orphan who, when hungryasks for "More, please". Oliver is sold to an undertaker, runs away, is lost onthe streets of London and meets the Artful Dodger along with other orphanboys. It will engage you with its pathos and drama, while delighting you withits outstanding musical numbers.

For our third show, we go from the London streets to a Caribbean islandwith Once On This Island. A folklore of a young girl, adapted from HansChristian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, it is the legend of someone so muchin love she was willing to sacrifice her soul. "Death may stop the heart frombeating, ho cannot stop it from loving" are words the Gods relate to us. A storyof all times that will warm your heart.

Our final show of the season is Hello, Dolly!, based on Thornton Wilder's TheMatchmaker. It is the story of Mrs. Dolly L^i, a matchmaker who while tryingto arrange her own match, succeeds in matching up three other couples. It is aquick lined and irresistible story of the joy of living, with show stopping musicalnumbers, with one of the most irresistible characters...Dolly Gallagher Levi!

Quality Musical Theater

Our lives don't

always follow

the map we

thought we

invented In our

early years.

DIRECTORI first became familiar with the Tony award winning Nine, when

its original cast, starring Raul Julia debuted on Broadway in 1982.The show later was revived several seasons back with Antonio

Banderas. With a stirring and insightful book by Arthur Kopit, andmusic and lyrics by Maury Yeston, Nine tells the story of GuidoContini, an Italian filmmaker in the midst ofa midlife crisis.

All of us in the world of theater, whether being an actor, director, producer, or technical wizard, have at one time or another come toa crossroads on whicii road to take, and when to take it. My road, like many ofyou, has been one of passion and love, sadness and loss, rebuilding and renaissance. Like our own lives, Guido's is one notunlike our own, full of'what ifs' and potential regrets, with a spicerack of optimism and redemption.

There are times, however, when our lives don't always follow themap we thought we invented In our early years. As Guido says in'Guido's Song.' "That's All That 1 Want." This truly exemplifies themeaning that our potential and our reality can sometimes be atodds, but our true spirit is based on how we behold our experiences.

For those experiencing the show this evening may it challenge, inspire, and provoke images of our youth, and its impact on ouradult lives, no matter what the outcome may be.

It is my pleasure to present to you, our fourth and final show ofslog's 79th season. Nine.
