Dear Garden Club Members,

Recently I’ve been asked “what does Garden Club do?” Questioners seem surprised to hear

that the answer is complex. We’re about plants, of course, but we combined a plant exchange with

a casual lunch out. One day our office is used for design classes, and the next it’s filled

with members stuffing envelopes with invitations to our House & Garden Tour.

At our December meeting we give grants from our House & Garden Tour labors to

four Naples charities – and enjoy a clever skit by an NGC ensemble. Later in De-

cember we travel to ECHO to learn about meeting the world’s food needs. And of

course we share season’s greetings at our Holiday Luncheon. Fondly, LIZ

January Program: “From Exploration to Exploitation: How Plants Make their Way from Wild to Market” with speaker Tony Avent.

Tony Avent is the owner of Plant Delights Nursery in Raleigh, North Caro-

lina. Tony founded this nursery to help fund the activities of Juniper Level

Botanic Gardens, a display and research garden with over 11,000 plants.

A graduate of North Carolina State University, Tony was a student of the

late horticulture professor J. C. Raulston, who instilled in him the quest

for the newest and best garden plants from around the world.

Tony is well known as a lecturer and garden writer and recipient of pres-

tigious awards from the American Horticultural Society, the North Ameri-

can Rock Garden Society, and the North Carolina Association of Nursery-

men, to name a few.

He was originally drawn to horticulture by a quirky

combination of genes. Tony actually began selling

plants when he was a young kid, so selling plants as

an adult seemed natural to him. He quickly realized

that starting a nursery was the best way to cover the

costs of plant addiction without having to get a real

job. "It's sort of like a gambler opening a casino or a

car buff opening an auto repair shop," says Tony.

Tony is a lighthearted garden genius who tired of

letting Mother Nature put him in his place.

Gift Bag Stuffing

(Note the change of date)

Wed., Feb. 3, 2010, 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.

at the Naples Garden Club Office

The annual House and Garden Tour is

coming up on February 6, 2010.

In preparation for this wonderful

event,

we hope that you will sign up to help

by stuffing bags (Gift Bags) that will be

given to every person who buys a

ticket

for the Tour. These bags contain free

items generously given by local mer-

chants.

It’s a fun way to meet other members

and

visit with friends.

Please let me know if you can help.

2010 House and Garden Tour:

February 5th & 6th, 2010

The House and Garden Tour is Naples Garden Club’s main fundraiser,

whose objective is to give back to the community by providing public access

to beautiful homes and gardens; educating the public on plant materials;

and showcasing the design and horticultural capabilities of club members.

This event takes the entire Garden Club to make it successful. If you have-

n’t already signed up to participate, we need hostesses on site at our head-

quarters at Naples Botanical Garden. Hostess jobs include directing our

guests from the parking area to the Hospitality Room, working in the

Hospitality Room, directing guests from the Hospitality Room to

buses, and helping to move Gift Bags to bus locations. Please contact

Carol Conant @ [email protected] or (775-9201) to volunteer.

The bus schedule has been slightly altered. Please note new bus depar-

ture times: 8:30 and 9:30 AM, 12:30 and 1:30 PM.

The duration of the tour is approximately 3 ½ hours.

Bus Hostess Boot Camp is scheduled for January 14, 2010 and January

21, 2010 – 10:00AM-Noon. Bus Hostesses need to plan to attend one of

these Boot Camp training sessions since there will be new information

and new procedures this year.

The Preview Tour is scheduled for Friday, February 5, 2010.

NGC members only will tour our homes. Members must sign up at our

table at the December or January meetings with Phyllis Grootemaat or

Carol Gill. If unable to attend either membership meeting, email Phyllis

at [email protected] /as soon as possible. The very firm dead-

line for sign-up is Monday, Jan., 4, so we may allocate space on our two

buses. No member cars are allowed to tour the homes; you must ride on

the bus.

For those members who have difficulty getting on and off the bus, please

indicate that fact when signing up. We will try to seat you toward the

front.

Sign up promptly!

I want to thank all club members who have volunteered to date to make

this event a success and encourage our new members to sign up and get

involved.

At the Moorings Presbyterian Church

President, Liz Chehayl called the meeting to order at 1:00 PM. Liz welcomed all members, provisionals and guests. Chaplain, Carol Conant gave the invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Each representative expressed their organization’s appreciation to the Club.

Like any other hydrologist out there, I get thirsty. That’s the reason I carry around a translucent green wa-ter bottle wherever I go. It holds 16 ounces. That’s a handy size. The downside is that I have to fill it up pretty regularly – a couple times per day. I could save myself the effort (of my regular refilling re-gime) by finding a container that fits a full year’s worth of drinking water in it. Granted, that’s not all that practical Who has the space or strength to carry around six 42.5 gal-lon water barrels, let alone one, let alone keeping it semi-cold and fresh? That is what’s amazing about Florida’s giant "water barrels" in the ground:

Our aquifers are con-stantly refreshed. Even at 179 gallons per day per person (Palm Beach County’s per capita demand), it would be impossible to pump them completely dry. But what if we could? Where would we put all that water?

As big as Lake Okeechobee is, we’d need 750 similarly sized giant bowls to store it all. Better yet: Let’s just keep it in the ground …

And only take out as much as we need. Think "16 ounces" at a time!

Robert V. Sobczak

Sip responsibly from the aquifer!

Our Garden Club is thrilled to become reacquainted with returning member, Loretta Sturgis. Loretta is from Northfield, IL and be-

longs to the Lake Geneva Garden Club. She has served our club in the past with staging for our flower show. She remembers, as

many of us do, the many trips to the attic in The Naples Depot. Loretta is also a very talented picture framer and sculpts in bronze

and stone.

Peggy Coniglio, a full-time resident of Naples, brings her talents from the Orchid Club to share with us. She also volunteers at the

Von Liebig Art Center, NIF, the Old Naples Association , and the Bonita Springs Art League. Welcome, Peggy, we are fortunate to

have you in our club, and I am proud to be your sponsor.

from her northern garden club, but she is a Professor Emeritus with McGill University and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She

has done research in post-secondary education and staff development. We are honored to welcome Janet as a new provisional.

Martha Forbes, sponsored by Dottie Meyer, is a year-round resident in Naples and a graduate of Greater Naples Leadership pro-

gram. She was in the same class in GNL as Lydia Galton. This very dynamic lady is involved in the Hispanic community, League Club,

GNL and forestry in NH. Thank you for sharing your talents with us, Martha.

band with his wholesale nursery in the Mid-Atlantic states. Carol will definitely be an asset to our horticulture workshops and the

Flower Show.

Candi Child from Newbury, MA, brings her garden club skills from the Newbury Garden Club. Candi spent 35 years in Education and

retired as an assistant principal. Gardening is a hobby as well as biking, golf and sailing. She modestly professes to intermediate

computer skills. Thank you for joining our group, Candi, and for allowing me the privilege of being your sponsor.

June Kroeschell has sponsored Carolyn Moore, who summers in Owl’s Head Maine, where she is a member of the Camden and

Owl’s Head garden Clubs. She has been an administrative assistant and excels in Word Perfect. Carolyn has also served on the Phil-

harmonic League Board. Welcome, Carolyn.

president of the Somerset and Mercer Coounty, NJ, garden clubs. She has held many board positions, including the St Lawrence Re-

hab Hospital and the Naples Philharmonic League. We are honored to include Joy in our gardening group.

FiFi MacMahon, who has brought us so many wonderful new members, has sponsored Katie Ryan from Bedminster, NJ. Katie is new

to our community and is sharing with us her expertise in chairing benefits and various CEO board member duties. We are looking

forward to getting to know Katie.

Egle Pedini has sponsored Mary Greer Raymond. Greer has been a member of several garden clubs, holding such positions as presi-

dent and flower show chair. She is currently the Zone XI Flower Show representative. Greer is also invested in Ikebana and the Or-

chid Society. Besides volunteering at our NBG, she recently exhibited in the World Association of Flower Arrangers in Chicago at the

CBG. WOW!
